The Dragon 1

Rate this book
This is a full revamp & Expansion of "No Ordinary Love".

If you read No Ordinary Love, you still DID NOT read the Dragon. There is only about 15% of the original book in this story. The rest is a new plotline as well as additional worldbuilding and characters.

A slow-burn AmBw mafia romance with high heat from the Lion and Mouse World

He’s the Dragon in Tokyo’s underworld.
She’s the love that will burn him alive.

Nyomi Palmer came to Japan to chase a story—an exposé on the elite sex clubs hidden beneath Tokyo’s neon skyline. She didn’t expect to find Kenji Sato—the Yakuza heir to an empire soaked in blood and gold, known only to all as the Dragon.

He was exquisite death in a designer suit. Power drips from his every word. And when he breathes her in—black amber and ripe plum—he gives her a new name.

Tora.
His tiger.
His obsession.

But Kenji Sato has rules. A legacy. And enemies who would slit her throat just to watch him bleed. He can’t afford to fall in love, and yet—he does so fast it shocks him.

But does the Dragon truly have time for love?
Or will the Dragon drag them both into the fire?

Why?!! She’s not a bad writer—she just spends too much time talking about stuff no one cares about. The couple meets, then she goes off for 2 chapters following the guy, describing his crew and then detailing a meeting we don’t care about. Then spends a chapter describing her platonic male friends house, then a random chapter through the pov of a dragon 🤦🏾‍♀️ Then a loooong car ride to get the MMC & the FMC in the same room together. I spent that whole time screaming OMG move on already 😡 I DNF.

The plot was good, but it was over detailed and at a stand still for a while. I struggled at times and almost Dnf'd, but between already dnf'ing about 6 books back to back and wanting to see exactly where this one was headed, I stuck it out. Im hoping the second book doesnt drag as much.

Exquisite

The Japanese culture, the artistic flare, the building of these two MCs and the beginning of their intense love story...with the very slow burn, intense sensual tension. Though I feel like this is one of her old books (name is changed from a few years ago) that she is retelling with some new plot twists...this is better, but very de ja vu. I love the other book(s) but this is better plot twists, lot more danger. Bringing the Lion in as an enemy, the really early days (before the mouse entered), made me loathe him more😂...and he annoys me enough as it is now. Love that this will be a series, but I hope it doesn't turn into the AMBW version of the Lion and mouse that goes on forever (years in fact)😑.

5⭐️’s.. Kenya Wright books’ are guaranteed page turners. I read this first book in one go.

The MMC is head of the Asian mafia. Specializing in weapons manufacturing, drug smuggling and high end brothels.

The FMC is attempting to do research for her next book about Asian brothels and massage parlors. She thinks she’ll be leaving in 3 weeks but after catching the attention of the MMC, she won’t be leaving Asia ever again. The only problem is she doesn’t know it yet.

This book was intense. The MMC is domineering. The first time they meet, he literally renames her because he thinks it suits her better. But this girl is not about to get run over with his aggressive ways. She has a few tricks up her sleeve to put him in his place. And he’s going to love working for it.

Kenya really can paint a sumptuous scene. I love her writing, though she can sometimes get a bit lost in the weeds and descriptive scenes drag on too long. I definitely hope there's more actual dialogue between the MCs and less inner dialogue and descriptions in book 2.

I enjoyed the FMC and the MMC. The FMC was funny and I liked that there was a balance of strength/defiance and vulnerability/surrender. The MMC was charming, hot, and seemed to have depth, not just solely thinking about sex with the FMC the whole time.

The storyline is interesting. I look forward to book 2.

Heart Wrenching & Explosive

This story started at a slow sizzle but quickly became an explosive story of love, hate, vengeance and the ultimate tale of sacrifice, pain, betrayal and loss. Can’t wait to read the continuation of this epic story.

Couple worth reading about

Kenya girl you are so talented. I have to use my adventurous imagination and girl this was a ride I would definitely pay good money to get on. I also have to use my spiritual imagination as well because I believe we are all connected in that way. Let me get back on this ride now since the intermission is over!!!

Love you❤

Wow, That ending!

I read the original story and I can honestly say this version is so much better. The best part was the last couple of chapters. Omg, I felt so bad for Hiro and Nura. I want the father to be unalived in the slowest most torturous way. I also hope that we get to see more of Hiro in the upcoming books or maybe he can have a book of his own. He has an interesting story. Will definitely be reading the other books that follows.

I want more!!!

This book was well written. It captured my interest from the first page until it ended with that cliffhanger. I read it in one day. As I read, I could see the characters like a movie was playing in my head. The author presents a vivid picture and it has left me wanting more of this world of the Dragon and the Tiger.

Reintro

I read majority of the series about the lion and the mouse years ago, I don't know why I didn't finish. I will say all the flowers language was getting on my nerves, talking about silk wrapped in steel. I guess I kind of get it because Kenji is supposed to be poetic, but that don't mean Nyomi needs to talk like that too.

Why Lord why

This book was 🔥. The emotional journey that one goes on to better understand the love of family and the love one should have. The pain of love found and lost the war to find it and end anyone that tries to take it away.

Roar To Flames 🔥🔥🔥

I loved it 💓 Nyomi Nyomi Nyomi or shall I say Tora 😉 I love her, she's witty, curious, funny and overall B.A. I love the chemistry between her and Kenji. The scenes were very detailed making me want to dive right in. I'm loving the description of everything. I like that she wants to explore but is holding her own. Not giving in to his every demand. I love the development of the story, as well as the bonus story within the story, that is so Fire literally lol. The Dragon That Swallowed The Moon had me fascinated as well. I can't wait to continue both. Overall this is a great read that gives you a smooth surrender, action, suspense and sexual energy. Kenji's world has definitely swallowed me with his Roar and Claws, I can't wait for more.

I Don't Want to Get Invested

Let me start off by saying I've read books 1 and 2 in this series. I love them both. Kenya Wright is an exceptional story teller. She's extremely adept at character and world building as well as drawing the reader in, quickly. She used to be my favorite author. My issue with Ms. Wright (along with authors that do what she does) is when she starts a series, she doesn't finish it before she moves on to the next project.... or at all! I don't understand it. Does she (and other authors, she's not alone) get bored with the storyline and want to move on to the next? I don't know. Instead of dragging the story out, end it after 3 or 4 books if you can't commit. Readers get invested in these characters and we need an ending. Being left hanging is cruel and I'm reminded of her unfinished works when I saw Kazimir (the Lion) make an appearance in this book. Kazimir is from her very long series with the Lion and the Mouse. I bought 9 of the books and the story has still been left open-ended.

Taylor Rose is her pen name for her darker stories. Her 2 books, Ruin and Hunt, also leave the readers hanging in book 2. Its publication date was in June, 2022. I must be a glutton for punishment, because here I am, like an idiot starting yet another one of her series KNOWING it's unfinished because book 6 is scheduled to be out October 2026. I started Ms. Wright's Ruthless Legacy series hoping it was some sort of continuation or spin-off of The Lion and Mouse series that would bring a close to Emily's and Kazimir's story, but no such luck. I didn't go past the 1st book and I'm glad I didn't, because based on readers' reviews, it looks like that series is unfinished as well. Three unfinished series; that's not good. So, while I decide if I'm going to continue the madness and move on to book 3 realizing there's a STRONG possibility her upcoming book 6 will most likely NOT conclude the series, I wanted to warn readers like myself who get invested in the story and find joy in getting lost in a good book, to not bother. Save yourself the frustration and either read one of Ms. Wright's solo books or skip her entirely and find another author.

If you see this Ms. Wright, you are a wonderful storyteller and author. Please consider finishing your series.

First off, the author did not come to play. Where can I get myself a Kenji? Because sir...the bar has been raised and I don't know if the rest of these book boyfriends are prepared for the competition. I annotated the heck out of this story and had an absolute blast from beginning to end.

Kenji was everything I love in a morally gray character. Powerful, dangerous, intelligent, protective, and somehow still capable of making me swoon. The man walks into a room and owns it without even trying. Every scene with him had me locked in.

But can we talk about Reo for a second? That's my dude right there. The combination of intellect and danger is always going to do it for me. Every time he showed up on the page, I was paying attention. Kenya Wright has a gift for creating characters that feel larger than life while still making you invested in their personal journeys.

I was also rooting hard for Hiro and Nura. Their storyline had me emotionally invested, which made certain events all the more frustrating because, of course, there is always that one raggedy character determined to ruin everyone's happiness. Seriously. Some people exist solely to cause problems and raise my blood pressure.

What stood out most to me, though, was the dialogue. The banter in this book was top tier. Sharp, witty, natural, and packed with personality. Every conversation felt purposeful and entertaining. I need to sit in on one of Kenya Wright's writing classes if she ever decides to teach one because the way she crafts dialogue deserves to be studied.

The romance between Kenji and Nyomi was intense from the start, but it never felt like the story relied solely on attraction. There were layers of danger, loyalty, family obligations, power struggles, and impossible choices woven throughout the plot. The stakes stayed high, and the tension kept me turning pages long after I should have gone to sleep.

If you enjoy dangerous heroes, criminal empires, high-stakes romance, unforgettable side characters, and dialogue that will have you highlighting entire conversations, then this one needs to be on your TBR.

Kenya Wright delivered a story that was thrilling, entertaining, and completely addictive. I had an amazing time with this one.

4.5 stars ya'll!

Absolutely Entertaining

I couldn’t wait to read The Dragon, book one of the Dragon series (don’t worry, if you're like me you'll enjoy yourself). This is supposed to be a dark romance features Kenji, the underworld boss of Japan who is called Dragon and Nyomi a author of best selling books and she wants to write a book about the sex trade of the underworld in Japan. They are instant attracted to each other but for now they have managed to keep a small amount of distance from each other until Kenji caged Nyomi against the door and ran his hand down her face which Nyomi ask him not too her and Kenji curl her hair around his finger and Nyomi answer was to knee him in the groin then ran. Kenji folded over in half with pain and thought of the only time this had happen in which time he broke the person nose and sent him to the hospital they were only eight years old and he didn't get in trouble now she made him laugh because he was the Dragon and no one had ever dared to do so again until now. Nyomi ran with her friend Zo who was worried about rising tension, or perhaps passion, seems to be more than the two can handle. The story is full of ribbing and laughter from each of their friends who provide the perfect mix of light heartedness and tough love. The banter and drama between Kenji and Nyomi, with the backdrop of the sex underworld, and the cliffhanger at the end makes this the amazing start of this series. I'm excited to read book two! I highly recommend.

The Dragon reads like poetry carved into flame. Kenya Wright’s prose is lush, rhythmic, and intoxicating — every line feels like it was crafted to be tasted, not just read.

And then there’s Kenji Sato.
Smooth doesn’t even begin to cover it. The moment he lifts his head and his eyes land on Nyomi Reynolds, he’s gone. A man undone by a scent — black amber and red plum — a fragrance that pulls him back into childhood memory and forward into a future he refuses to surrender. From that moment on, his devotion is absolute.

When I say I want a Kenji of my own, I mean I want a man who speaks the way Kenji speaks to Nyomi — with that quiet, lethal certainty that says you are mine, and I will move worlds for you.

And listen… There is one kiss in this book. One.
But Kenya Wright drenches the entire story in sexual tension so thick you could bottle it. Every glance, every breath, every charged silence feels like it’s vibrating with everything they’re not yet doing. It’s exquisite torture.

Book 1 ends on a cliffhanger that left me breathless. Kenji is ready to bring war to his father, The Fox, if that’s what it takes to claim the love he knows is his. This isn’t a soft romance — it’s devotion sharpened into a blade.

Beautifully written, emotionally rich, and humming with tension, The Dragon is a stunning start to a series that promises danger, passion, and the collision of destiny.

The words “blink” and “swallow” need to be struck from the author’s vocabulary. There’s a popular comedy podcast called ‘My Dad Wrote a Porno’ about a son reading his dad’s badly written novel called… ‘Belinda Blinks’ and she does indeed blink, over and over and over. So, it’s funny, yet irritating that this author’s repeated use of “blink” and “swallow” would take me out of the story and bring me to a podcast about bad fiction.

I’m also irritated because I believe the relationship between FMC and MMC is a slow-burn, not because of a cat & mouse, push & pull between them, but more because there’s just a lot and nothing happening at the same time. I don’t know, as I listened to the audio, I just kept thinking these long conversations could have been edited down, that this really didn’t need two parts (or more), that there’s a lot of filler. Ending the book where the two leads have only met twice and had one date and the big tease of the FMC visiting Japan’s night district not happening just made me feel like I wasted my time.

I will say the gang and MMC’s struggle between rivals and at the end his father was intriguing, but I’m not here for just that. And the book was mostly that.

I will leave this review on a positive note, I thought the audio and the narrators did a wonderful job and yeah I’ll ventured into the 2nd book.

When it comes to romance books, I am an extremely tough critic. I hardly finish them because they are predictable. The FMH is young and naive, the MMC dominates and controls everything, etc. Also, I have learned that once the characters become intimate, I become disinterested. So, I love a good yearning, obsessive slow burn, even an enemies-to-lovers. I want to see some context and depth to the character's relationships not just immediate attraction and sex. This book delivers on that and more. It is written like poetry. It draws you into the underworld of Tokyo while exploring what power feels like when you don't expect it. The flirting, teasing, push and pull of Kenji and Nyomi's relationship along with the undercurrent of danger, it's just chef's kiss. And the story within the story of Sol and Korin, that needs to be a stand alone novel immediately. I wanted more of that story so bad. All 3 books are so beautifully written and a great introduction to Kenya Wright. I am ready to devour more of her books and pray they do not disappoint like this one did not. Also, a 4th and final book to be released this December! Cannot wait.

I'm hooked! Where's part 2?

Here I am, looking at the number of pages left and wondering where this story is going because I'm almost at the end and you decide to leave me hanging like this, Mrs. Wright. That ain't right! Why would you do this to me!? 😭😭😭

I wasn't sure if this story was going to be supernatural in nature but I was intrigued to see where it went either way. It ended not being the case but I'm invested! I love every single character except for the Fox. He is vile and he's gotta go. Expeditiously! I also need my buddy Zo to stand tf up sir 😅.

Now for the main characters...

Nyomi is so patient and understated. She has this quiet power that you might overlook until she speaks. Kenji has so much shit to deal with that he didn't ask for but I love the way he is with his people and the love he has for them. I love that he doesn't really hide it either. Btw, that date was definitely an experience! My man is so smooth with it but he definitely deserved that little "lesson" from Nyomi on how to approach a lady 🤭.

As a profound lover of dragons, the title alone hooked me before I read the blurb.

I dove in expecting fire, and Kenji delivered. He’s a strong alpha presence—smooth, deliberate, and commanding—but Nyomi made this story sing. She’s no pushover. She matched Kenji’s energy with her quiet power and refused to be swept away. Their romance didn’t rush. Nyomi set the pace, and I respected every moment of her strength.

The writing? Poetic and immersive. The scenes were rich with emotion and tension, and the pacing kept me locked in from start to finish.

Honestly, the only way this story could’ve been better is if Kenji turned into a dragon. I would’ve screamed. But even without physical scales and wings, his energy was pure fire.

I’ve finished books one and two, counting the days until book three drops.

Wow !!

I can just tell this series is going to bad ass and I'm here for all of it .I don't think Tokyo or Kenji's father realizes what as awakened but they will very soon .Nura death was unfortunate but it will not be vain. I thought that Nyomi was getting herself into a situation that was way over her head but imagine my surprisingly that is not the cast at all .I am getting ready to frame open book 2 . Please please let that be more books for this series .Spoiler alert we all know who the lion is and his choke hold he has on the underworld but I really didn't care for his bullying tactic towards Kenji. The Lion needs to stay in his lane and leave the others alone if they are not coming after his and his love ones

Wow

This book was an absolute page-turner that completely consumed my attention from the first chapter. The dynamic between the characters Nyomi and Dragon was brilliantly crafted, with their initial meeting presenting such comedic brilliance that I found myself laughing uncontrollably, to the point of tears streaming down my face. The narrative was so engaging that I was unable to put the book down, eagerly devouring each page with intense anticipation. The storytelling was so compelling that I am now eagerly awaiting the next book in the series, excited to see what adventures and experiences await these captivating characters in future installments.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. I appreciated that Nyomi held her own with Kenji. They were matched in energy, sexuality and wit. I love how elements of the Japanese culture were interwoven into the storyline.

I was absolutely heartbroken for Hiro and Nura. I haven’t been this shook in a long time. It tore me apart. In a fantasy world I would love a different ending for Hiro and Nura with a book of their own. They really pulled me in.

I look forward to the next book with the hope that Kenji and Hiro’s father will pay for his cruelty.

I remember reading “No Ordinary Love” many years ago, so I didn’t think about purchasing it in its re-vamped version titled, “ The Dragon”… but believe me when I tell you that it is nothing like the previous version. The Dragon ( Kenji) and his Tora ( Nyomi) they are that couple! There many other characters in this series including a serial killer who seems to get his kicks by leaving beautifully wrapped boxes of servered feet at Kenji club. So if you are a long time fan of Kenya Wright’s book you will most definitely enjoy this series.

Interesting plot so far. You can see the future potential. I loved the witty and quick banter between Nyomi and Zo, Nyomi and Kenji, and just everyone in general. I did not like how Kenji/ The Dragon could flex and wield his power when dealing with Nyomi, Zo, and his army; but he cowed down when outright challenged by the Lion and his father. It’s giving beta energy. He has to redeem himself in my opinion because every time he wants to command someone in the future, me as a reader will say in the back of my mind, “Why didn’t you say that to your father or the Lion”?

I cried!!!

This book reached into my soul and took hold, I thought I couldn’t love characters more the the ones in the Lion and Mouse series, but these characters have proved me wrong!! Hiro, Kenji, Rep all the fangs and my dear sweet Heroine Naomi. Oh how I cannot wait to see the range of emotions you send me through!!!

Thank you Kenya Wright! For the briefest of glimpses into your soul!!
