As I read more of it, I am beginning to understand the ways that fanfiction exemplifies the changes in writing that have taken place in the past decade or so. Fiction is way more collaborative, either directly as in co-authored works or, more often, because works are strongly anchored in specific communities of readers. Many times the members of these communities are in direct online contact, sharing ideas, reading each others' works, etc. But the contact doesn't have to be direct--it can simply be a matter of a shared fandom, with many writers exploring specific tropes and pairings, borrowing and riffing off each other, experimenting. Thus, a lot of the interest and enjoyment for members of the fandom will be in how two talented writers approach the same storyline.

It is impossible for me to read Tangled Webs without comparing it to Clever Boy, which is one of those stories for me, on the personal all-time list so to speak. The two have almost identical set-ups and feature many of the same plot developments, e.g. Stiles' bulimia, John Stilinski's efforts to find his son. I haven't checked to see whether the authors were directly riffing off each other, which was written first, etc., and it doesn't really matter to me. Kidnap/Stockholm is clearly a popular Steter plotline for understandable reasons and the beauty of fanfiction is that there's absolutely nothing wrong with rewriting someone else's story to suit your own taste. The enjoyment and the interest for the readers is enhanced by contemplating how two authors tackle the same material.

And in fact, these authors are both so strong that the differences eventually feel all-important, and all the more fascinating for the initial similarities.

So the bottom line is read both stories, think about them, compare them, and hopefully comment on my review and disagree with me so we can debate every goddamned nuance like the besotted fans that we are. These works are inextricably tied to their context, their communities, and it is not an exaggeration to say that our reactions are a vital part of that community--contributing to the overall creative energy that makes these amazing stories possible.

3.5 stars. Rating would only have been improved by smelling SEX, but the author was nice and clear up front this wasn't going to be one of those stories.

This is one of my favourite book-length fics ever. And it was my first real foray into teen wolf fic and even fanfic in general, so it'll always, always hold a special place in my heart for that.

Not for the faint of heart or those who are dealing with certain triggers - it deals with some pretty traumatic/triggering stuff, including Stockholm syndrome, self-harm, and bulemia. But it also deals with courage (seriously, Stiles is such a BAMF), love (the relationship between Stiles and his dad is so great), and healing.

Consistent, complex characterization and character development, a fascinating dynamic between Stiles and Peter, and most of all, a character who tries to stay true to himself through everything. It's a portrait of Stiles (KouriArashi's Stiles - who I love, and who is especially close to cannon here). It's a psychological struggle that gets very dark, but the story as a whole isn't without hope. Very well written. I appreciate it for its emotional realism and it's completeness - it really deals with one whole arc, an extended kidnapping and its consequences and recovery.

One thing that raises this fic above the average is the multiple layers operating in it, as well. We don't only have the relationships - the ever-changing dynamic between Peter and Stiles and the bond between Stiles and his father - but ALSO PLOT!! Basically, what would the nitty gritty of being on the run entail? Turns out it's not just endless motels. Peter has to cycle through many identities, and set them up in different cities, different circumstances every time. All the details of where they stay, what they eat, and their routines are so specific and well thought out. This is a WEALTH of detail - it's just so in focus. The plot actually deals with the situation and, from Tom and Derek's end, the actual investigation. How do you track down someone trying not to be found? Despite the fact that neither Tom nor Stiles are in control, they MAKE PLOT HAPPEN.

Another thing I really, really appreciated was the writer not turning Stiles into a Woobie. It would be easy to let a main character become passive in a situation like this where so much is being done TO them, so they can just react - but in this story Stiles resists constantly, in ways that are very much HIM. He is active the whole time, despite the fact that the plot has him under someone else's control for almost the entire book. He's the hero of the story even though he's the victim - and he [SPOILERS] //// arguably rescues himself. //[END OF SPOILERS]

It's a lot about trauma and survival and emotional recovery, which is a topic I appreciate.

Also, the fic is Gen - and I think stronger for it. Don't be turned off if you're only used to reading things with a paring. The relationships will suck you in anyway, I promise.

Teen Wolf
Stiles&Peter
no pairing
Sheriff is the best
Stiles&Derek friendship

Peter leaves Beacon Hills, and takes Stiles with him. It doesn’t matter how many times Stiles manages to escape Peter, because the werewolf always finds him and won’t ever let go.

There are two other stories with similar plot - Don't Fail Me Now(3*) and Clever Boy (1*) one of the main difference between this story and other two is that in this story Peter's not a rapist. Thought he isn't above making a threat

"Are you going to rape me?"

"Do you think it's going to be necessary?" Peter asks, still giving him that steady look.

Stiles' voice wavers a little. "No."

"Well, then," Peter says. "There's your answer.

Peter's truly is a monster in this story. And since it's written from Stiles pov we don't get a clear picture of him. However he never is a one dimensional villain, and while this description of Peter given by one his associates rings true

"You know what they call him? The snake. Because he's so fast and slippery, no one ever catch him. And he changes his skin all the time."
[...]
"He only does that because he has to."

"Hah! He likes it. He's a stone cold killer, that one. Some people call him Janus. Because he's two-faced. Everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie."

"Don't talk about him like that," Stiles says, his voice thin and tight.
"He only hurts people when he has to. He doesn't enjoy it."

"He nothing but a liar and a killer. Just look in a mirror for proof, nino. You see the way he's killing you -- "

Derek who knows knew Peter best and hates what Peter has become says Dealing with the cartels, drugs and human trafficking, it wasn't . . . it wasn't Peter. It wasn't my uncle.

As for Stiles, he's fighter and survivor. Even after Peter breaks him there is subconscious part of him that fights back.

4.5 stars. An exciting fanfic in which evil Peter abducts Stiles and proceeds to mentally torture him, meanwhile the sheriff pulls out all stops to find his son. No sex in this one but that was okay. I was expecting a twist at the end but it didn't happen.

Peter kneels down in front of him and thumbs the tear tracks on his cheeks. “Stiles, you don’t seem to understand what’s happening here,” he says. “This is a good thing. I’m not going to hurt you. I don’t want to hurt you. I want to make you part of my pack. It’s a gift. You should feel honored that I chose you.”

3.5 stars Daaaaaaaayum! A friend commented how this is very similar in set-up to Clever Boy by abluemountainashtardis, and how they're two of her favorites. I also lurved Clever Boy, although rated it higher than this due to the higher Steter factor (aka male-on-male action, albeit non-con). And initially I did lament the lack of a 'romantic' plot in this fic, but it ended up working out perfectly.

There were still all the same elements. The same fucked up mental torture and Stockholm-inducing manipulation. The only difference is the change from lover to 'father'. I ended up enjoying the lack of any sexual overtone whatsoever, because it was so different for a Steter. It was fresh.

I loved how we got to explore Stiles's coping mechanisms, as well as see how everyone else is dealing . It helped since I already felt close to everyone due to the wonderful addition that was the occasional Sheriff POV when trying to find Stiles or following leads. It was always timed well, allowing us to see the other side of things and how the search was progressing. It gave the story a slightly less helpless feel.

Everyone was perfect. Stiles was strong. The Sheriff was patient and understanding. And Derek was a nice addition Well done.

Đỉnh, so với clever boy thì khá hơn rất nhiều. Peter is a true villain here. Love the intense and hurt/comfort in this. The relationship between Peter and Stiles in here is like father-son.
But its turn out that Peter never have a son, its just a way to get into Stiles's head. But is really good. Love thiss
Its gonna be my all time favourite Steter fic now.
