Consistently entertaining story remains consistent, film at eleven. This still hasn’t delivered the elusive perfect volume, but it’s such a good, fast-moving story that takes real risks that mostly pay off.
It’s too bad the monthly evaluation arc couldn’t have fit into a single volume, as it was a fantastic storyline that had good reason to pit all these characters against one another. Having to wait for the denouement broke the pacing up a bit.
Tenka gets her turn in the spotlight and the mangaka continues with her ‘one step forward, two steps back’ approach, which I love. As much as successes can be found for these characters, sometimes on a small scale, this is a savage industry and the story reflects it.
Genuinely, I cannot fathom committing myself so completely to something the way these girls throw themselves into trying to achieve this dream. They give up so much and work themselves beyond the point where it’s clearly healthy to do so.
And they often get crushed for their troubles. This suddenly blows the core group of Jiwoo, Tenka, and Minchae up as quickly as they formed, which isn’t shocking to anybody except for Minchae (I mean, I was surprised too…).
Minchae goes to bat for Tenka in a way that’s sweet but also incredibly soft-hearted in an industry that is anything but (in case you were not paying attention). Both Minchae and her loyalty are probably more than the situation deserves.
This is probably the weakest section, as it also includes the ridiculous company president and is a little more over-the-top-for-laughs than I think is necessary. This is already real extra without needing to exaggerate much at all.
But, again, the aftermath is savage. Minchae shows that she has everything she needs to succeed except for that pesky innocence. By the time the volume ends, well, either it’ll break or she will.
Jiwoo also attempts to move forward, but, unlike Minchae, there is a clear area of performance where she’s lacking. Seeing her out of her depth is really fascinating - she comes up against a problem her confidence can’t get her out of.
This is Tenka’s story, however, and no mistake. The suggestion that this road she’s on might lead to Erina’s return is interesting enough, but Tenka has her ability to copy other people as her trump card and it far outstrips her natural talent (although the latter does play a role at the start of the volume, showing she isn’t just one trick).
We end with the promise of some crazy fights in the next volume, as Tenka decides to amp her ability to a degree never seen before and there’s a real fascinating potential there to discuss whether she’s succeeding based on her own merits or those of the people around her.
I’m already very pleased with the way this series is going. Some volumes are better than others, sometimes it goes too far with its story, but it has things to say and it is never, ever not interesting. I can see this going for a while and that makes me very happy.
4 stars - satisfying and surprising and not afraid to show its claws, this continues to be a surprisingly strong examination of the k-pop industry and the people who want to be involved with it.
I'm hooked on this series. This volume is Impossible to put down from start to finish. Midori Tayama shows great restraint over the results of the first evaluation: if Tenka gets recognized for her efforts right away, why would she feel motivated to improve? Also, Minchae has grown on me. At first glance, she seems timid but is actually quite spunky.
Genuine is obviously BTS and I guess Lumius is Wonder Girls? Fellow kpop stans, please weight in.
really enjoying this manga and could not figure out why. guess what its the same emotional premise as legally blonde. and if you think that says anything about me you are wrong im literally so normal
Something about this series is just so addicting. It's fast paced but never rushed, and the characters each have something unique to offer. I have a lot of respect for the author for not having the lead win all the time, for realistically showing set backs as much as successes. It takes years for some of these trainees to debut, so the recurring need to improve is far more interesting than a prodigy.
I've been binge reading "girl learns a performing art" manga recently, and here's another one that I've been following as it releases, along with Kageki Shojo and Skip-Beat. I appreciate that the girls are learning early that effort is important, and they won't just be handed what they want. I'm looking forward to seeing how Erian is doing, whenever that might happen. It's hinted that she and Tenka will be meeting again soon...
