How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates

Rate this book
A humorous, swoony, and downright terrifying horror romance in which a young woman gets caught in the middle of a murder spree at a speed-dating event and must use her encyclopedic knowledge of the horror genre to make it as a real-life Final Girl.

When Jamie Prescott and her best friend Laurie attend a speed-dating event, Jamie expects to meet a roster of mediocre men and indulge in some street food afterwards. She doesn’t expect one of her dates to have his throat slit at their table during a blackout. When the lights come back on and there are more bodies on the floor, it becomes clear that speed dating can be a very dangerous pastime.

Armed with makeshift weapons and Jamie’s extensive knowledge of what NOT to do in a horror movie, the remaining speed daters try to find an exit while the killer adds to their body count. As the night progresses and Jamie comes face-to-mask with the murderer, she begins to suspect he is committing the slayings to woo one of the daters and turn her into his real-life Final Girl. But Jamie has a different love story in mind, and as she fights for her life, she can’t help but find herself ensconced in a love triangle with two of the other speed-daters. Will she survive the bloodshed to find her happily ever after? Or does this machete-wielding psychopath have another Final Girl in mind?

For fans of Love in the Time of Serial Killers and Butcher & Blackbird, How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates is one killer love story.

this kept me hooked!!

started jan 18
finished jan 21

i think this was such a fun, and unique book! i've never watched a horror movie so don't count me on that part - romcoms tho 🙂‍↕️ our fmc, jamie is a huge horror/slasher - romcom nerd. she's literally writing her thesis on slashers.

this was such a different take on the romance genre and i had a blast! i can't look at meat cleavers the same anymore 🥲

i was literally suspicious of everyone, considering the gaps where we'd see one characters and not another made everyone possibly be the killer. in the end i was kind of shocked considering prior events regarding everything.

if you love thrillers & romance give this a try! it does have horror elements (like people dying .... a lot of people) but it was so fun and fresh!

out feb 3 2025!

thanks simon & schuster canada for the ARC!

How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates by Shailee Thompson
★★★★

Jamie and her best friend Laurie are trapped in a locked speed-dating event turned murder spree and must use her horror-movie know-how to survive as a real-life Final Girl. A swoony, darkly funny horror romance where flirting can be fatal.

This was a lot of fun to read. I was especially loved the beginning of this book. It was extremely captivating. I must say the momentum of the story dropped off mid way through. The setting of this book was the same place the whole way through which I found challenging. It would have been interesting to get an insight to what was happening on the outside or even get a POV from Laurie.

I really liked Shailee’s writing style and wouldn’t hesitate to pick up another book from her in the future. This was overall a great read but just missed the mark for me at the end.

💭 Have you been on a speed date before?

Thank you @netgalley and @simonschusterau for the opportunity to review this book.

How To Kill A Guy in Ten Dates is set to blast onto the scene and firmly establish Shailee Thompson as a writer to watch. This debut novel, a slasher rom-com (yes, you read that right) is one of the most unique and refreshingly told stories I’ve read in quite some time. Thompson’s voice is sharp, clever, and utterly original; I’ve truly never read anything quite like it.

The story follows certified movie lover Jamie and her best friend Laurie as they reluctantly sign up for a speed-dating experiment. Jamie, a devoted fan of both romantic comedies and horror films, expects an awkward night of small talk — not a blood-soaked mystery. But when the lights suddenly go out and the man across from her ends up with his throat slashed, Jamie finds herself living out a twisted mash-up of her favorite genres.

As the surviving daters realize they’re trapped inside with a killer, alliances form, tensions rise, and even a spark of romance flickers amid the chaos. Jamie might just find her perfect match… if she can make it out alive!

How To Kill A Guy in Ten Dates is a bloody good time; a smart, fast-paced, and wickedly fun read that will delight movie lovers and anyone looking for a Valentine’s story with a killer twist. Don’t miss this one when it hits shelves from Gallery Books in February!

I absolutely LOVED this book,
Scream it from the rooftops loved it!

From the very first page, it had me hooked with the details: the map, the hilarious quotes, the clever play on names, Jamie, Billie, Stu, Wes, Prescott, Carpenter, Laurie… the list goes on.
Every reference felt like a wink to horror fans—Scream, She’s All That, and yes… frosting ourselves 💎 (IYKYK).
This wasn’t just fan service—it was a love letter to the greats, wrapped in blood, banter, and heart-pounding suspense.
This story is a genuinely intense slasher and a laugh out loud, root for true love rom-com.
One minute my heart was racing, the next I was grinning like an idiot. Shailee either did her homework or is a certified thriller/rom-com junkie—because the balance here is chef’s kiss.

When Jamie Prescott and her best friend Laurie attend a speed-dating event, they expect awkward conversations and late-night food—not a blackout, a murder at their table, and a masked killer stalking the room. Armed with slasher-movie knowledge and makeshift weapons, the surviving daters must escape while navigating mounting body counts, growing suspicion, and an unexpected love triangle.
Razor-sharp humor, relentless pacing, and espresso martinis 🍸 (my personal love language), and I was DONE for.

Did I write this book? Is Shailee Thompson my twin flame? I may never know—but what I do know is that this is one of the most fun, clever, and addictive reads I’ve had in a long time.

If you love slashers, rom-com chaos, Final Girls, and stories that don’t take themselves too seriously while still delivering real stakes—add this to your TBR immediately. 🔪🖤📚

I really enjoyed this book! I went in completely blind and loved the slasher meets rom com vibes. I would say there wasn’t much comedy and definitely had some gorey parts but I loved the story. It kept me guessing and although I had some suspicions I didn’t guess the ending which is rare for me!

Highly recommend

Loved this entertaining cinematic slasher rom-com story!

I was so immersed in the clever story, that follows cinephile Jamie Prescott, who becomes trapped in the centre of a murder spree at a speed-dating event. Armed with her extensive knowledge of what not to do in a slasher, she is forced to figure out how to avoid becoming a Final Girl.

I love how each chapter begins with a misquote from a romantic comedy, with a horrifying meaning. The humour in the story is what makes it such an enjoyable read, as well as the many pop culture references. It also has a map, which I love!

'You have to decide how you want the movie to end. You have to decide what role you're going to take in it. Because Final Girls and Leading Ladies aren't born. They're made. They're a culmination of their choices.'

This was an immersive read for me, listening to the audio while following along in the book. I loved the audiobook narration by Stefanie Kay and Patrick Zellerand, as well as the quality audio production!

This is an incredible debut and I am very keen to read more from Aussie author Shailee Thompson.

With thanks to Simon & Schuster (Australia) for an ARC of the book, and Simon & Schuster Audio (Australia) for the audio listening copy, via NetGalley.

This was wild!! I normally don’t read anything remotely close to horror so this slasher romcom was wayyy out of my comfort zone, but im so glad i did!! This was so addictive, so fast paced, so STRESSFUL that I couldn’t put it down. I was entertained from start to finish. It was gory and unsettling but as someone with a very weak stomach, I didn’t think it was too terribly much. The romance aspect was cute but I was honestly more into the slasher story of it all!! I kinda guessed who was behind it all based on a few things said but I didn’t predict another twist so I’m glad that was in there. I was seriously on the edge of my seat the whole time, so stressed out for our characters. Overall a really entertaining read and I’m glad I went out of my comfort zone to read it. Thank you to the publisher for the arc 😋

Literally obsessed! I absolutely loved this book SO much! Easy 5 stars, and will totally appeal to a wide variety of readers! And the references…killer!

This is a debut novel that is going to put Shailee Thompson on everyone's radar! It is a slasher AND a rom-com. That's right! What a mashup! I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loved this. Jamie is a movie fanatic. She and her roomie/bestie Laurie attend a speed-dating night. What's the worst that could happen, right? When the lights go out and Jamie's current date gets his throat slashed, the worst that can happen, happens. Jamie finds herself stuck in a real-life slasher, but also a rom-com, as she falls for leading man Wes, who seems to be determined to save as many lives as he can while finding a way out. No one knows the blueprints for these types of movies better than Jamie does, and she is determined to be the final girl and the leading lady in the end!

This book is delightfully fun, witty, and fast-paced. Thompson doesn't shy away from gore, but also writes a cute romance! I had so much fun reading this book. I think it's going to be incredibly popular! Book releases 2/3/26. Just in time for a bloody Valentine!

Thank you so much to Gallery Books for sending me a physical ARC!

❤️ It’s a really fun read and the second half had me hooked
❤️Neat little twists and despite the many murderS, warm and fuzzy (best of both worlds)
❤️Really likeable characters.
❤️I like horror and rom-coms so this felt like a no brainer. Just a really fun play on movie tropes throughout. You can tell the author loves both too.

💔The meta commentary from the leading lady/final girl was a bit much at times. I think the target audience understands how these stories work and can pick up on it without being spoon fed. But I guess that’s also her character..
❤️‍🩹Also at no point did I understand the layout of the club. Felt like that was over explained for some reason and I didn’t get it. That might just be me though! Someone draw me a map.

I’m a big fan of reading at least the first 50 pages in one sitting when beginning a new book, and I highly encourage you to do that with this one. The story takes off 50 pages in and from there it’s a wild ride. A cross between a romcom and a thriller, you have to suspend a bit of reality here to enjoy this crazy tale. I did very nearly take a star off for the…excessive romance in the midst of a horrifying encounter which was just entirely unrealistic but. It was a fun read.

"Yeah, you're going to love this one. It's a scream, baby." - Stu Macher (Scream, 1996)

First, isn't this cover absolutely gorgeous!?
And the title really sums up the rom-com/horror vibe throughout. Iykyk ;)

Shailee Thompson's debut How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates is an ode to lovers of the horror and romance genre. Combine the two and you get this hilarious, swoon-worthy, thrilling story about a woman who finds herself living out her wildest movie fantasies - it's just too bad the genre is slasher.

When Jamie Prescott and her best friend attend a speed-dating event at a club, the worst thing they anticipate is mediocre small-talk from average men. They never expected to be living out the dream of some sadistic serial killer that is out to get them all.
Jamie, self-renowned lover and student of films (especially horror and romance), is able to use her knowledge of The Rules and tropes to try and survive the night.
What entails is a cat-and-mouse thrill between a group of strangers and the menacing figure slowly stalking towards them...

On a personal level, I am also a lover of horror movies and rom-coms, so I might be biased but this book was an absolute joy. I couldn't put it down. There was the right amount of romance and thrills to keep you entertained and guessing whodunnit. I found myself kicking my feet and grinning at the cute moments and then gasping at the next spree of murders.
Hello Shailee Thompson, we are kindred spirits <3

There are horror easter eggs throughout and I loved the not-so romantic quotes at each chapter.
I can't wait to recommend this title at work (and to everyone I know)

This was a fun romance slasher novel that played out in my head like a movie!

Jamie and Laurie have such a fun and relatable friendship dynamic that had me laughing with them and I know all too well the feeling of going back to an old club and having the memories rush back, minus all the murder of course!

I enjoyed trying to figure out who the killer is and I was half right 🤣 Bit hard to explain without spoiling lmaoo so dm when ur done 👀

Also as a huge movie buff myself, I quite enjoyed that Jamie was one of them and the continued reference to the rules of horror movies was quite fun, because DUH, YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE RULES!

The slashing was hectic and very easy to visualise and had me cringing like fk lmao and the romance was cuuuuute, I quite enjoyed the blossoming relationship and forced proximity situation going on 🤣 I'll admit I was suss af on Wes the whole time tho 🤣🤣

There was maybe a bit too much inner dialogue for me and some parts I felt like I was scanning, not reading, but other than that it was really good and fun and I enjoyed it heaps!

Also the audiobook of this is awesome, I think I enjoyed that more than reading it, because Jamie's personality and jokes really shine through!! the actors did a great job!

All in all, this was a fun read for people that like Scream, Prom Night and all those fun jump scare gory movies mixed with a lil romance 🤣

thank you to Shailee Thompson, Simon and Schuster, and netgalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

I’m in love, I’m obsessed! I loved every second of it. The pop culture references perfectly suited my addled little brain (which constantly thinks in movie quotes and song lyrics). Occasionally I was on the right track with my suspicions but mostly I was along for the ride 🙌🏻 horror and rom com are perfect partners, I will hear no arguments.

Thompson has taken the best of both and given us a witty, explosive, gruesome tale that features the best kind of female friendship (complete with firm handshakes) and a Leading Lady / Final Girl who absolutely lives up to both labels.

Happy Release Day! 2/3/26

This book has been on my TBR for a minute and I’m so glad I preordered the audio. It was really well done!

Read this book if you like:
- late 90s/early 00s romcoms or slashers
- every romance or slasher trope under the sun but not in a cheesy way
- a “she’s the one” girl
- a slasher with a final girl
- a little mystery wrapped in your romance
- blood & gore but not in a horror way
- a perfect mix of these two genres!

i heard jamie talk about this one on the shelf respect podcast, i was excited to remember i had the arc on my shelf — it’s a horror-romance that was definitely heavy on the horror and light on the romance, but i enjoyed it! it had me on the edge of my seat and definitely had to be put down until i could read it in the daytime (i get spooked!!!) but it was TENSE and also INTENSE and i was pleasantly surprised by how into it i was.

Much like Jamie, I'm someone who adores horror movies and rom coms equally. And there were so many great references, easter eggs and nods to the biggest movies from both genres for fellow fans.
This is a slasher movie come to life, with some hints of romance, and it has such a cinematic feel to it.
The story keeps you on the edge of your seat and you're not sure who to trust, even if I was rather suspicious of who turned out to be the male killer. But maybe that's just because I usually have an inkling when it comes to similar reveals in some of my favourite franchises.
While it was rather creative having essentially every single character name be inspired by a famous movie character, from Wes and the Cravin' nightclub to John Carpenter, Laurie Strode and Sidney Prescott all being utilised, sometimes they felt a bit shoe horned in.
But speaking of the characters, I liked how well the ensemble cast was handled and that they all felt distinct, even at the beginning.
There are some brilliantly tense sequences, with the club feeling claustrophobic and like you're trapped in it with them. I also liked that we got some romantic moments too in amongst all the blood and literal guts. I would have been swooning for Wes too.
It maybe dragged a little bit, but overall the pacing was pretty good.
I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for what Shailee Thompson does next.

This book was so much fun! It was a rom-com/thriller in the best possible way. The book opens with the main character Jamie and her best friend Laurie discussing Jamie's dissertation which is all about rom-com movies and thrillers. She is an expert and that really in handy for her when she found herself literally trapped in a rom-com gone terribly wrong. The premise of a speed date killer was unique and fresh, although I did figure out who was the killer very early on in the book, I still enjoyed the ride. It was very campy and honestly so funny. I loved Jamie and Laurie's relationship. I also thought it was so fun how all the characters were named after famous thriller characters/directors. There were lots of Easter eggs and nods to movies that were very enjoyable. This was one of my favorite books of the year and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a fun thriller! Thank you, Netgalley for the arc.

I ate this book up! This book spoke to my romcom and slasher loving soul! Yes, those two genres should not work together but I’m here to tell you, they do!

Jamie then needs to use everything she knows about how to survive a slasher to get herself and Laurie through the night.

slasher mystery 🤝🏽 rom com

“how to kill a guy in ten dates” was SUCH a fun read and i literally couldn’t put it down! it blends the most entertaining parts of a classic slasher film with a sprinkle of romcom 💌

i have to confess that i did guess everything by 50% (it does, after all, utilise our favourite slasher archetypes) but i was still not disappointed in the slightest & very much remained on the edge of my seat.

if you’re a thriller lover or a romcom fan, make sure to add this to your (february) 2026 tbr & thank you atria for the copy!

No notes! This book was a blast to read. The storyline allowed you to get to know the characters as the book progressed so it wasnt like having to dive into a story lost. The action was well written, impactful but did not detract from the story. I was on the edge of my seat in suspense, but also laughing and rooting for love. It kept me guessing the whole time and I was wrong over and over, and then wrong about being wrong. I just genuinely all around enjoyed this book much more than I thought I would.

If a rom-com met a slasher, it’d be How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates.

This was a hugely entertaining audiobook — fast-paced, self-aware, and packed with personality. What starts as a light-hearted speed-dating event quickly spirals into slasher chaos, with cinephile Jamie Prescott drawing on her encyclopaedic knowledge of rom-com and horror tropes to make it through the night.

One of my favourite elements was the chapter openers — classic romance film quotes cleverly reworked with a darker, killer edge. From 10 Things I Hate About You and Bridget Jones to Pride and Prejudice and The Wedding Singer, they added so much charm and became something I genuinely looked forward to at the start of each chapter.

The audiobook format really elevated the experience. The narration was engaging, and the added sound effects gave it a cinematic feel — like listening to a slasher film play out rather than a traditional audiobook. The pop-culture references were plentiful, including Taylor Swift nods — and despite not being a Swiftie (social anomaly, I know), I thought these were woven in really well and were easy to enjoy even as a non-fan.

For a debut by a Brisbane-based Australian author, this was confident, creative, and incredibly fun. A smart rom-com / slasher mash-up that fully embraces its concept and delivers exactly the kind of chaotic energy it promises.

This was such a fun and surprisingly perfect romcom slasher. It’s probably the first book I’ve read in this somewhat niche genre, but after seeing so many ARC readers rave about it, I had to give it a go and I’m obsessed with the cover.

As someone who usually hates pop culture references, I was shocked by how well they worked here. The constant movie references actually fit the story perfectly and I loved that I caught every single one (me every five seconds: I understood that reference).

The book is fast paced with the perfect blend of horror, comedy, and romance, and it would translate so well as a movie adaptation. I especially loved the romcom quotes reworked to fit a slasher vibe at the start of each chapter, one of my favourites being:

“Nice boys don’t kill like that.”
“Oh yes they fucking do.” — Not Bridget Jones’s Diary

This definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and I loved watching two characters fall in love amidst all the chaos and killing. Highly recommend giving this one a read.

I HAVE NOT BEEN THIS SMITTEN BY A BOOK EVER! It’s a BLOODY masterpiece (quite literally 😉)!!! 🩸🩸

How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates by Shailee Thompson is a wildly unhinged, blood-splattered, darkly hilarious debut that completely took me by surprise. This is not your average rom-com — it’s a sharp, twisted slasher thriller that gleefully leans into chaos, murder, and pitch-black humour.

What really makes this book shine is how confidently it commits to the madness. Each chapter escalates the body count, the tension, and the stakes, blending brutal slasher elements with clever satire of romcoms and thrillers that belong together. The violence is unapologetic, the pacing is relentless, and just when you think you know where the story is headed, it veers off into something even more outrageous.

Despite the gore and carnage, the book is surprisingly smart. Shailee Thompson balances humour and horror with impressive control, delivering laugh-out-loud moments alongside genuinely shocking scenes. The characters are messy, morally questionable, and incredibly entertaining — exactly what this kind of story demands. The references to the famous dialogues from some amazing romcoms imagined in the slasher thriller style at the beginning of each chapter are just chef’s kiss! 💋

For a debut, this book is bold, fearless, and razor-sharp. How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates is perfect for readers who love their thrillers bloody, their comedy dark, and their romances… lethal. I devoured it and would happily read anything this author writes next. 🔪🖤📖

The audiobook of How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates was bloody, campy fun in the best slasher movie way, and Stefanie Kay and Patrick Zeller absolutely crushed it. Their performances brought the banter, tension, and gore to life, and the production quality, complete with occasional sound effects, made it feel like listening to a fully realized horror rom com movie in your ears. It plays lovingly with classic slasher tropes (final girl energy, a costumed killer with a nickname, scream worthy moments straight out of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer) while still delivering a genuinely fun whodunit I didn’t have figured out. Gory, clever, self aware, and wildly entertaining—this is a must listen for horror fans who like their kills served with humor and a little romance.

If you had told me a slasher romcom was going to be the cure to my reading slump I wouldn’t have believed you. I’ve been on the hunt for a book that really sucked me in, something that I didn’t want to put down, for months and I finally found it.

This is perfect for people who loved butcher and blackbird but want something a little different.

I like the writing, I like the humor, I like the romance, and I like the horror + gore.

This is definitely going to be one of the next booktok darlings and I think it’s earned its place.
