Ai Yazawa (Japanese: 矢沢あい, Yazawa Ai) is a Japanese manga author and illustrator. Her pen name comes from singer Eikichi Yazawa, of whom she is a fan.
Yazawa started her comics career in 1985. She specialises in shojo manga (girls' comics). Most of her works have been serialised in the magazines 'Ribon', 'Cookie' and 'Zipper'.
Yazawa's stories focus on young, often rebellious women and their relationships. The characters are always very stylish, and Yazawa herself is known for her sense of fashion. (She even attended a fashion school for some time after high school.)
Among her most famous manga are Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai (I'm No Angel, 1992–1995), Neighborhood Story (1995-1998), Paradise Kiss (1999-2004), and Nana (2000-2009), the latter awarded a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2003. Some of these works have been adapted into anime and live action movies.

Hate HATE hate seeing Hachi and Takumi like he really is a rat. Nobu was always endgame man, this manga hurts.

Look, it’s hard being human, and it’s hard to always be cheerful and charming and understanding and patient and courageous and and and everything to everyone, especially the ones we love and want to be there for.

I really love all of these characters so much. The messy way Yazawa-sensei wrote them, where even Takumi, someone I’ll always want [redacted], has his charms, to Yasu, who’s always steady, shows why I still love this unfinished series.

“Back then I thought that I was through with love. But, no matter how painful it was…I tried to dream again. I wanted to love someone again. Somehow, I felt hopeful…praying for Nana’s happiness that night.”

Since this is a review for the 3rd volume in this anniversary set, the below review has slight spoilers following the first two books.

In this volume, we get more into the love story about both Nanas, Nana Osaki and Nana Komatsu "Hachi". From the last volume in this Anniversary set, It's clear Nana Osaki is not over Ren. Attending his concert in the front row, it's impossible he didn't see her, right? Hachi, on the other hand, is coming across boy crazy, still trying to rebound after Shouji broke up with her. She's around a bunch of beautiful musicians due to Nana involvement in a band, but maybe that causes complications in her relationship with Nana.

It's a dramatic slice-of-life story following young adults, and the characters all seem very lifelike. I don't necessarily relate to Hachi, but she has strong emotions and you can't help but sympathize with her. I'm definitely beginning to see why this story is still well-regarded to this day.

I love this series so much. I was originally reading an ARC I received from NetGalley, but halfway through I decided to purchase the physical book so I could start collecting, but I will still give my honest opinion. Nana definitely shows its age, but I think that gives it such a je ne sais quoi kind of charm. The relationship between the two Nanas is 100 percent queer and nobody can argue against me on that. They are soulmates and they might love and sleep with other people as their real romantic partners, but these two love each other in ways no one else can imagine. I know the author hasn't continued writing this series since like, 2009 and I hope she is able to pick it back up sometime. DEfinitely recommend to anyone who likes manga, punk music, and subtle queer love.

Nana has had a lasting impact since its release 25 years ago. We've seen trends come and go, but fashion and friendship will never go out of style. I've been a massive fan of the Nana series since I was a teen, and this anniversary edition is a must-have! Those who are long-time fans, or just discovering the series, will love both Nanas and enjoy seeing where their journey takes them. Ai Yazawa is an incredible storyteller, whose narrative will stick in your mind for years.

Nana! You did it again! I love this series so much. I love how the relationships are always evolving and how the characters experience things most young adults face. It is a very relatable read and in a way, inspirational. :) Thank you NetGalley!
