Xin is a war orphan in a poor village in the kingdom of Qin. He has big dreams of becoming the Greatest General Under the Heavens, and when his best friend’s life is cut short by political machinations, Xin finds himself on a quest to do what no one has ever done before—unify China.

With Cheng Jiao’s coup put to rest and Ying Zheng back on the throne, life soon returns to almost normal for Xin and Diao. Having declared his goal of uniting the seven kingdoms under one leader, Ying Zheng commences his conquest, and Xin finally gets his opportunity to fight on a real battlefield, rise in the ranks, and become one of the Greatest Generals Under the Heavens! His first step is starting out as a foot soldier in a war against the Kingdom of Wei. But he quickly learns just what it means to be a mere foot soldier on the front lines against one of the Middle Kingdom’s most terrifying armies.

What an incredible finale! Heads are rolling, blood is flying, and the squad gives it everything they've got. The first major battle reaches its climax, and I couldn't put this volume down.
The ending of this first arc completely won me over. The action is relentless, the tension never lets up, and every chapter left me wanting more.
I honestly have no idea what's coming next, but I'm beyond hyped! 🙌🏻🤩 It's taking everything in me not to just Google what happens next. 🙈
It really feels like we've made it through what I'd call the prologue of the story. The foundation has been laid, all the pieces are in place, and now the real story can finally begin. I can't wait to see where this journey goes.

I already love this series, and I'm so excited for everything that's still to come.

This was the best volume of Kingdom I’ve read so far. As a big fan of historical epics, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the research and cleverness with which this author has approached the Warring State era of Chinese history, however I feel like so much of the series beyond (and in some of the spots before this) gets bogged down by catering heavily to a teenage demographic. I’m not sure why it caters to this demographic so much given how mature a lot of the content is in theory, but it does, and so some of my engagement is lost.

This volume, however, was the peak of my reading experience so far, and I enjoyed every moment of it! Here’s hoping we get more satisfying conclusions like this!

Every shonen manga has definitive volumes, and perhaps the most important is the conclusion of the first arc, the point of whether to drop it or not.

Kingdom passes with bright colors. The characters, their motivations, the stage: everything draws you into a bloody grey conflict where heroes and villains depend on one's perspective.
Looking forward to the next volume.

This was a great read. Cheng Jiao was a spoiled brat and he deserved what he got after starting a rebellion to usurp the throne from his brother. Learning the history of Kingdom is very interesting and that now Xin has joined the army and about to join another battle. Can't wait to see what happens next.

This volume reaches a place that a traditional story would've made its end-point, and it is thrillingly depicted, including one of the most satisfyingly gruesome beat downs I've seen. The story then continues in interesting ways, showing how this is just the beginning while highlighting the aftermath in enticing fashion. I am really interested to see where this will go next.

Xin in the first volumes came across as a typical unkillable power-of-friendship shonen protag and many of the character designs were whimsically grotesque, which felt off for a series of this scope. This volume brings the "end of the prologue" and the beginning of "the real story" (according to the Author's Note). Xin finally comes across the way he should; overeager and out of place, and the wacky character designs from the early volumes now read as larger-than-life rather than bordering-on-fantastical.

Ei Sei gets a cool moment finishing this first big arc, and we get the briefest moments of quiet before Shin heads off to fight in an actual war army. It was a satisfying conclusion! I like that it sort of resets, we begin with Shin somehow mixed up with the king himself but as we move onto the next arc it's clear Shin isn't actually anywhere near that level. He's a capable fighter who now has a few friends in high places, he's earned a reward of his own, but he's still naive of all the intricacies of war and has a lot to prove. I'm curious how he differs from all the other soldiers now. We've seen him fight assassins and warriors and some monster gorilla-thing, but is he actually skilled on a battlefield and not some one-on-one against a single powerful foe?
