Title: A masterful sequel that levels up the stakes!

I was lucky enough to win an advanced copy of this book, and it did not disappoint. As a sequel to The Deathless Ones, this installment was perfectly paced, strike the ideal balance of plot progression, high-stakes action, and swoon-worthy romance.
The expansion of the world-building was a standout for me. I loved the deep dive into the pantheon of gods and the contrast between historical perception versus Elric’s firsthand experience. The way the magic system and the coven’s growth are woven into the narrative feels incredibly seamless.
Jessamine is a fantastic FMC; I loved seeing her step into her power and maintain her agency even as her relationship with Elric deepened. Speaking of their dynamic—it’s electric. While there are secrets and miscommunications, they are handled with maturity and provide genuine character insight rather than falling into the "annoying third-act breakup" trope.
That ending has me desperate for Endless Ones!

This read higher fantasy than I was expecting from this book. I enjoy more of the grim and atmospheric settings. Lots of witchy stuff going on. This book is written in third person and a bit ominous because I felt more distant from how things were described. It has got a lot of drama rolling, which works for the plot. I guess the one thing I couldn’t get over with this book was how things were done matter of the factly. I think it is the writing style, but I would have enjoyed to see the characters’ struggle/inner emotions more at the forefront.

Recommendable if you love solid fantasy, high fantasy, and maybe Orders structure? Think religious orders. The Deathless One is a God so there is that element of religion. The main witch is a princess. That is a unique interesting point.

I think it takes great skill to balance world building plot, characterization, and also the buildup of a relationship successfully in a way that manages to make each element wholly shine in their own way, but without distracting from any of them.

I’ve read a lot of books with inhuman protagonists before it became trendy so trust me when I say from experience, I think Emma does a fantastic job showing exactly how a relationship like that can work in a way that is utterly compelling, completely believable, and utterly romantic. It doesn’t feel like something where they like each other, because of circumstances (like life-threatening danger)or because they are intrigued by the differences, but rather because of who they are. Reading this, it is characters would always have been perfect together in any universe. That they mesh perfectly, the relationship is real, and that you can’t just substitute another character in and have it make no difference- unlike some books where the main character is just sort of a generic stand-in.
Also people often grow attached to the male main characters, especially in books that are more of a monster romance, and it makes sense, especially since they are usually built up or a focus.
However, Emma manages to have you grow extremely attached to the female characters where you want to both be them and also have them as a friend.

I have such a fondness for all her characters, they read like fully realized people with their own idiosyncrasies and quirks, where it is clear that they are developed with love and care and craft. Where is the clear the male main characters not just grow to love the protagonists, but also to respect them, which is so key and underrated. Where falling in love only enhances, showcases, and protects who they are, the same way a frame does for a painting. Adding to all that, sometimes plot or background is sacrificed for the development of the relationship in romance books, but Emma skillfully weaves in world-building without holding the reader’s hand like a child or lore-dumping in a way that overwhelms you.

It is a pleasure to have watch Emma develop her craft. She already had a knack from her first book of using the plot and setting as a vehicle for their relationship to grow and blossom rather than relying on tired tropes for conflict or development like miscommunication, but it has only grown stronger to complement her naturally fantastic grasp of characterization and relationship dynamics. I thoroughly enjoy Emma’s books, I first started reading Heart of The Fae but really jumped in with her mermaid series as it came out since it actually was the type of mermaid book I was looking for.
Since then, I have only enjoyed them more and more and I applaud her for also taking creative risks and branching out into other worlds instead of playing it safe Ike she could have. That’s the mark of a true artist and someone who genuinely loves to tell stories.

Also, as someone who is part of her Patreon and Discord, it gives me great personal pleasure to say the artist is just as charming, if not more so, than her books- and that’s a very high bar.

This was an excellent sequel to the first book, The Deathless Ones, and was perfectly paced with the right amount of plot, action and romance!

“𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞…𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐚𝐦 𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭.”

Book 1 Recap: Princess Jessamine was murdered on the day of her wedding, when her Gravesinger powers woke up the Deathless One, God of Death and Witches. He reanimates her and needed her to fully awaken him in his true form in the world but first he needs to gain her trust. The book leaves off with conspiracies against her family identified, Elric in his true form and plenty of leads on where to look to next!

“𝐍𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐝, 𝐉𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞. 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞.”

I loved how much the world building was expanded upon in this one, especially in relation to the gods and their dynamic between the perception of them after they were gone, with the first hand experience from the Elric himself. With the way book 2 ended, this will certainly be a big plot point in book 3 and I’m super excited to learn more about what it means to be a god in this world!

“𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐡, 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫. 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞.”

I loved seeing how close Elric and Jessamine got in this book and how much Jessamine came into her own power. I love seeing a FMC with agency still and even more power, especially as soon as she enters a relationship instead of just staying back and letting others handle things for her. And while there was miscommunication issues and secrets kept, it was handled in a way that didn’t make it an annoying third act break up, which I super appreciated, and instead just added more character insight into both of them!

“𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬.”

It was also interesting seeing the coven grow in this book and learning more about all the different types of magic in the world and seeing them in action. I’m a sucker for world building and magic systems so I appreciated how it’s been rolled out in line with the story and feels very seamless!

𝐈𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐞’𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤.

The Heartless One is one of the most unique and refreshing books I’ve read in a long time! If you’re looking for a fantasy romance with actual morally gray characters, found family, and strong female protagonists, you’re in luck. This book delivers!

One of my favorite things about The Heartless One is its characters. Jessamine and Elric feel like real people. I think being able to connect with characters is tricky and can be magical when done right. And it’s even more impressive in The Heartless One since I can’t relate to many of the things that happen (surprisingly, I didn’t have any zombies waiting to give me a hug this morning—it must be my lucky day!).

I also like that this book is equal parts romance + fantasy. Jessamine continues to deepen her bond with Elric, but she is also trying to reclaim her throne, help her people survive a zombie-like plague, and grow her coven. There’s also other types of relationships, like the friendships that form between the members of the coven. I think it’s done well in this book.

Finally, I have to talk about the strong female protagonists. I love reading about women who support other women, and at its heart, that’s what this book is about. I don’t think I can put into words how I felt while reading these scenes, so here is a quote from the book itself:

“It is my greatest fear that women will forever pay for the fear of men,” she murmured. “For we are haunted and vicious beasts they could never understand. They will never know the amount of abuse it takes to be so soft. They will never understand that to tame a wild creature, she must first be broken, and it takes us years to find that wildness again. We are divine victims and wrathful fury, and both forms are worthy of worship. There is a goddess in all of us, and she cries out to be seen.”

Above all, this was a book that I wanted to keep reading. Sleep is optional, right? I can’t wait to read the third book!

I received a copy of this book courtesy of the author’s publicity team; all opinions are my own.

The Heartless One by Emma Hamm

A single word from her, and he would raze the entire world to nothing but brimstone and ash.

She was going to hit him. She was going to clock him right in that chiseled jaw.

‘... if this woman asked him to brush her hair, then he would damn well brush her hair.’

This woman would be the death of him. And he was a deathless god.
-
She won the heart of Death…now she must fight for the hearts of her people.
-
Did someone say female rage and a villain who only has eyes for her? *chef's kiss*

This is the second book in The Gravesinger series. And what a continuation it is! Packed with women taking back their power, laugh out loud moments, moments you can't help to shed a tear over, a hefty dose of found family. I adore this series so much.

Jessamine struggles with a lot this time. If she's good enough, skilled enough, does she have what it takes to take back her throne?
We even get a splash of betrayal!
Jessamine and Elric get tested on multiple different levels this time around. But one thing is crystal clear for the Deathless God, Jessamine belongs to him, and him alone.

Tropes:
Shadow daddy
Betrayal and vengeance
Female rage
Found family
Crawl to me
Revengeful fmc

The third and last book in the series releases this September! (Which is way too long!)

Jessamine and Elric’s connection and bond is somthing else! I love how even though Jessamine wants power and to get back to her throne she won’t do it by hurting The Deathless One along the way she wants to support him and be a team! I loved reading the coven grow I was so nervous with each witch what it may bring our way they truly can be so unpredictable with their hidden goals I just want Elric to be able to live in his body without fear it will be taken away! THE WAY HE WAS ON HIS KNEES for Jessamine oh my gosh!

“I like to see you wild and undone, Princess.”

“Call yourself what you wish, Gravesinger. Just know that the only thing you have to call yourself is mine.”

When Elric commands a room and reminds them that he is The Deathless One and the power he can control I legit get goosebumps! Jessamine becoming the Queen that she is owning her truth and what she is owed! When she suggested space and this was his answer,

“Space? Jessamine Harmsworth, the last thing I want from you is space! I want to inhale the very air you breathe. I would live inside of your skin if I could. I want you more than anything I have ever wanted” ahhh!

Rule together or burn together!!! I want to be in Elrics coven!

This is an exciting second installment in the paranormal romantasy Gravesinger series. It should be read in order.

FMC Jessamine is beginning to come into her Gravesinger powers, with MMC Elric, the Deathless One, at her side. But as they gather their coven and try to reclaim Jessamine’s kingdom and throne, it often feels like one step forward and two (or three or four) steps back.

I enjoyed this second book, though probably not quite as much as the first. There were some delightful new characters introduced and plenty of political intrigue and plot development. There’s also a lot of spice, with the main characters exploring their new relationship and power dynamics.

I can’t wait to see what happens next in the series!

Spice 4/5

Writing: 4.5/5

I absolutely loved the Deathless One. This continues from the first book. I felt like the Deathless One followed their journey and had some love interest. The Heartless One was kind of hard to follow at times. I liked the story itself but it felt like there were a lot of parts that kind of dragged on. It seemed to focus more on their relationship than the story itself. The FMC seemed like she was all over the place with how she felt and her personality. There were a few chapters where she got very frustrating to listen to because she was dragging out a fight simply because she didn’t want to communicate.
However, I do love the bond the coven has. I love that they are trying to work together to solve the issues at hand (I don’t want to give away any spoilers). I enjoyed the first one more because it focused more on the story and what they were setting out to do. I hope in the last book they get back on track to taking the kingdom back.

I loved all the added characters. The coven dynamic was phenomenal. Jessamine and Elric’s love story was amazing and I loved the banter. Seeing them happy together is all I ever need. The plot was still very interesting, if a little off-paced here and there. I felt like we jumped around to getting things done, then focused on only on our main characters with no progress elsewhere for long periods. But I’m not complaining because I do love these characters and I can’t wait to see where they go together in book 3!

3.5 ⭐️ I wanted to love this but it didn’t quite hit the same as book one.

Also, let’s talk about Elric??? Forget female rage. Where on this godless world is this man’s justice arc? I don’t even care about miss main FMC anymore. Someone needs to start very openly eliminating the “witches” who want his demise or at least Jessamine needs to because I will not stand for this.🫩

Like girl, he brought you back from the dead a few times, worships you.. you better protect that man god with your 9 apparent cat lives in book 3 or so help me I will riot!!

Emma kills me every time and I just know book 3 is going to HURT!!!!

Seeing the love and relationship grow from book 1 to book 2 is sweet. He would burn the world for her and she him.
Though I feel like after all that’s happened to both of them the insecurities they show is so HUMAN.
Yes this book is fantastical but there is something so real about the characters, I don’t even think people realize when they read it.
You start feel the emotions.

Perfect second book. I absolutely love this series and cannot wait to read The Endless One. I love that Emma can give us all the things we love from a Romantasy without us needing to slog through 500+ pages of over complicated world building. Don’t get me wrong, this story is complex and unique but in a way that doesn’t feel daunting for the reader. This is not easy but Emma is an amazing storyteller.

Book two is just as dark and twice as spicy, but the first 25% plodded along, and I almost threw in the towel. I stuck with it, though, and I was rewarded for my perseverance. We get more of Elric and the history of the gods, we begin to gather a coven & power, more secrets are revealed, and Jessamine finally unleashes some of that feminine rage we were promised.

In the follow up to The Deathless One, Jessamine and Elric continue their quest to save Jessamine's kingdom and take back her throne.

This was so good! I loved it even more than book one and I adored that one too!
First off, the world building and magic in this series is amazing. There are a few scenes that really blew me away. In this book you see Elric building his coven so the found family story gets even better. I loved seeing all of the misfit women come together and really find this true friendship. All of them, while being side characters, are still developed and you become attached to them quickly.
The main story, along side the taking back of the kingdom, is obviously the romance between Jessamine and Elric and I adored them. There is spice and even some groveling on his part.

This series just keeps getting better and I can't wait to read more!

"Call yourself that you wish, gravesinger. Just know the only thing you have to call yourself is mine."

This was such a fantastic book in this series, the books keep getting better and better. The Heartless One starts up shortly after the ending events of the last book. Elric has a physical body now, Jessamine is growing in power, and their coven is starting to expand. The pacing starts fast, and keeps going and doesn't stop until the end. We get to see more world building in this book, and I really loved getting to see more areas of the Kingdom and we learned more about the other gods. It was fascinating to hear about them from people who have/had worshiped them, but also got to hear Elric's first hand account of them. Watching them each come into power, work on overcoming their fears, and growing their coven had me cheering. I know it is probably still an uphill battle, and with the revelation at the end of the book, I know it's going to be a tough one.

If you thought the chemistry between Elric and Jessamie was cranking up the heat in the last book, hold on to your horses for this one. There is just something about a god on his knees and worshiping the woman that he loves that just does something for me. I can't wait to get my hands on the last book in this series, I just KNOW Elric is going to go absolutely crazy for the woman he loves, and I can't wait to see it and cheer him on.

The Heartless One by Emma Hamm picks up right where we left off in The Deathless One and was a whirlwind of plans, deception, secrets, and more! This book gave off the vibes of feeling sort of "middle" like but ultimately became so much more and I cannot wait to see how things will conclude in the next installment.

Elric is now in corporeal form and has helped Jessamine build a small coven of witches. He knows the more that they can gather, the more powerful Jessamine will be, but still fears his past fears becoming a reality where the witches just want to continually use him for the power he has and leaving him dead again and again. But that's a problem for later perusal as the next step in helping Jessamine gain back her kingdom is finding her cousin, Fortuna who seems to have an idea of what Leon's ultimate plan was for taking over her kingdom after murdering everyone, including Jessamine herself.

At times, it felt like the plot was a little simplistic, but that's not so much of a complaint as more observation. Reading so many different novels there's always puzzle pieces to the plot going from one point to another and then following a different point to three more sets...it gets overwhelming at times. So having Jessamine with a shorter list of goals was almost a relief. Yes, she does have a more detailed plan overall to getting her kingdom back, but her path feels a little easier in first she is trying to add a few more witches to her growing coven and then she must find her cousin.

The way Hamm draws all this out though is remarkable. It feels like a longer scheme of events than it is, but is told through a remarkable set of pacing. It's not slow, it's not abrupt, it's just the right pace for the events at large and I enjoyed it massively. It's nice to be able to stay in the fantasy romance genre and not have it swell into something overly complicated where excessive notes are needed. This is easily followable and feels like a good movement from point A to point B with very little a.1-a.26 involved before point B!

There was still plenty of conflict and secrets to arise in this one that will threaten the growing romance between Jessamine and Elric. That is to be expected from a second book in a trilogy to be honest! Lol. I was happy that they were more of the external and internal problems versus another love interest, so that was refreshing. The romance was still just the right amount of spice for me without being overwhelming and constantly on the page. There's a lot going on so the moments that Jessamine and Elric could steal together were even more special.

The ending to this one was ideal. We are on the precipice of the finale and a great battle to overcome is looming. There will be even more challenges to face before we can get to the hopefully HEA ending, but at the rate this series has gone so far, I do believe Hamm won't let us down in that regard. Whether how much heartbreak will be put through the ringer before that happens remains to be seen. Lol. I always fear the worst but hope for the best, especially with fantasy. Great things are expected to come out of this last book and I cannot wait for it to happen! If you're looking for yet another amazing fantasy romance series to dive into, be sure to check out The Gravesinger trilogy!
