Thank you to NetGalley and Mallory Whitmore (aka The Formula mom) for an ARC of this book.

The best thing about this book is the fact that exists. A nonjudgmental and helpful resource for parents who are formula feeding—one I wish I had with my first baby! Not everyone plans to formula feed, but over 80% of parents use formula at one point or another in the baby’s first year, and yet they have no guidance! There’s so much guilt and misinformation around formula feeding (no, it’s not dangerous, no it’s not bad for your baby), and we need more books to set the record straight. (Also check out Cribsheet, Emily Oster’s book that includes a chapter on feeding).

This is a practical and reasonable guide that offers answers to feeding questions that come up for first time parents. Instead of frantically googling, here you can find a lot of great info regarding how to avoid formula waste, when size up nipple flow, safely prepare formula, shift to solids, and drop bottles, and more. Definitely recommend to all new parents no matter how they plan to feed their baby.

As a mom who struggled to exclusively breastfeed my twin babies, I carried a lot of shame and confusion around using formula. There was so much misinformation and pressure that it often felt overwhelming to navigate what was actually best for my family. This book is the resource I wish I had during that time. It provides clear, thoughtful information about formula feeding and helps remove so much of the stigma that parents can feel. I’m grateful a book like this exists to help parents feel informed, confident, and supported in their feeding choices.

Lots to say about this book! I'd been looking for a comprehensive guide to formula feeding and was lucky that this was recently released (March 2026). There's also "Why formula feeding matters" by Shel Banks (2022), which seems like another good choice and is also based in the UK, which is next on my reading list - it's worth noting that Bottle Service is written by an American author for a US audience and may not be in line with NHS guidelines. There are some other books out there but they cover all types of feeding and some are a little older (2012). I was looking for a detailed book that was primarily focused on formula feeding, and wanted something more recent so that it was up to date with the latest pediatric recommendations.

The information in the book is extremely detailed, and the author makes a lot of great recommendations and tips that first time parents may never even have considered. There are chapters on the composition of formula and how to pick a brand, detailed feeding guides (how much, bottle prep and positions), troubleshooting. The books goes all the way into bowel movements, weaning and introducting solids. You get the sense that the author isn't trying to push any particular method of formula feeding or weaning and just lays out the different options, which is helpful and informative. For someone who is completely new to infant feeding this was a great primer and I feel a lot more confident. The book is certainly worth reading on this basis alone.

The downside of this book is the pervasive tone of handwringing mom-guilt throughout. The author is very candid about her struggles with postpartum anxiety and depression and (understandably) writes from her own experience. She often puts long "mom notes" between chapters where she goes into excruciating detail of the negative thoughts and struggles she had. Notable lines included "I thought formula was poison" "Parenthood is just the painful process of letting go of control" which just sound like catastrophizing and negative thinking your brain does when struggling with anxiety and depression. Lady, I'm just here for information about bottle feeding. I did wonder if mothers with postpartum would find it comforting or triggering to hear those negative thought patterns repeatedly when they're in the newborn trenches - I think I'd rather not hear it and just have the positivity and encouragement. The last two chapters of the book have a very different tone - they are a lot more positive and encouraging and frankly empowering, and I wished she had written the whole book like that to be honest.

I may have been more sensitive to this as I was listening to the audiobook, so couldn't easily just skip those sections.

But on the whole, it is still a useful book chock full of information. In fact, I got this book as a free audio book and have now sprung for a paperback, as I think it is going to be a great reference book.

This is absolutely the book I needed 5 years ago, but I'm so glad it's here now! Mallory seamlessly blends research, official guidelines and recommendations, personal anecdotes, and humor to provide an invaluable resource for parents who are bottle feeding in any capacity. She's like the older sister or trusted friend you always needed, offering a healthy balance of reality and encouragement in such a sensitive and caring way. Her book is broken up into different age groups and the questions about feeding that typically arise in those age ranges, making it very easy to navigate depending on your child's age. I'm currently formula feeding our third child, and even though I've gone through the formula journey two times before, I still learned things from this book and look forward to referencing it throughout the rest of our newest little's feeding journey. I'm so thankful for this book and for the ways it will be a blessing to so many families!

Bottle Service is such a helpful guide for new parents and caregivers. I really wish I had this when I first became a foster parent and was formula feeding for the first time. It covers all the basics in a clear, supportive way, like if you were getting advice over coffee from a close friend. I also appreciated that it goes a step further and explains what to do when things come up/get challenging and as babies grow up and their needs change. The quick tips, mom notes, and graphics really helped bring to life what she teaches. I felt seen, understood, and supported reading this book. Highly recommend!

Mallory has provided such a valuable resources to parents and parents-to-be who need support when it comes to bottle feeding, choosing formula, combination feeding and even for folks like me (a dietitian) who are hungry to learn more. The book is simple to read and there's a mix of evidenced based information and heartwarming personal stories from Mallory herself. I look forward to recommending this book to others in the future.

Loved this as a mommy to be read and has colored my view on a black and white topic.

Open this up to open your mind a little more on the formula/bottle feeding side of parenting.
Data and research backed on something that is so easily dismissed- I learned so much under the scope of what felt like a judgment free big sister POV.

Boy, do I wish I had this book with my first kid! It makes you feel good about your formula choices as well as giving you knowledge and tools you need to formula feed your child. I especially love the loose schedule as that was very tricky for me. I am going to pass this book down to my friends who have newborns. I recommend it to everyone!

the book I wish I had as a first time mom ❤️

my third baby is almost a year old now so a lot of the book didn't apply to me currently but how past me needed this book. I'm thankful other moms will get to benefit from it because so much good within it, not just on formula feeding but everything baby and mom related in that first year of life

Many families spend significant time preparing for breastfeeding, yet find far fewer resources when it comes to bottles and formula feeding. Bottle Service fills that gap with practical, relatable guidance designed specifically for formula-feeding families. It’s a valuable resource for both parents and medical professionals supporting them.

This grandmother highly recommends Bottle Service. Such a well written book for all new Moms. It will be my go-to baby shower gift from now on. I really liked the personal way that the author (Mallory Whitmore) wrote- having been in this situation herself. Great book.

Long overdue guide!! Made me confident in my feeding journey.

LOVVVVVED this book. It is so overwhelming to try to find evidence-based, non-shaming, easy to understand on no sleep, information about formula feeding. As someone who mostly breastfed and then ended up formula feeding for the first time, I was so grateful to find this resource.

I’d recommend it to any new parent or person who supports new parents.
