As alluded to in my review of Idol x Idol, Vol.5, it’s fun to have the two series both drop the same week to compare and contrast them. It’s no secret that I think Girl Crush is doing a better job, though both are good, but I didn’t realize just how much better.

The zeroed in focus of Girl Crush has been backed up by very strong storytelling and absolutely jaw-dropping art (the pool scene in this one is something else). It’s not even a contest, character-wise, as I think Tenka might be turning out to be a lead for the ages.

Tenka’s exceptional ability at imitation has made her a force to be reckoned with, but it has always left a clear weakness that she is constantly forced to overcome. Any time she’s asked to improvise on the spot, she simply can’t.

Add in her dogged pursuit of her goals that dials in her focus and strips the fun from things and you see why she’s occasionally so incredibly stiff or struggles at a simple request to manage a smile.

The first part of the volume pits Tenka against Sua in a performance battle that plays to Tenka’s strengths since the two are replicating somebody else. Except Sua’s no slouch herself and she’s already feeling her age in an industry that has a very definite time limit.

It’s a very strong start, combining the nature of the two characters with some additional backstory and throwing it all together for a showdown. Yet it won’t be where this volume hits the gas by a long shot.

No, Sion, the obnoxious and full of himself boy band guy, has brought Tenka along to star as the female lead in the new video with his group. This would normally be an excuse for simple fun and drama, but Girl Crush is shockingly good at piling on character work.

This entire arc just keeps getting better as it goes, wrapped up in no small amount of tension (of various sorts) between Tenka and Sion. It’s one of the best things we’ve seen yet and a really great change of pace from a lot of typical manga story beats.

Tenka managed to get herself the lead role in this music video, but she’s great at being an ice queen and not as good at shedding the persona that has defined her for 99% of the series. The drawings here are fantastic, with the entire arc a step above what was already very strong.

There’s a moment when what was literally the catalyst for this whole series, a boy, is depicted as fading from Tenka’s memory and it’s executed so well. Tenka got what she needed from that encounter, but she’s literally growing beyond it and I love how it was portrayed.

This brings Sion back into the picture after hours and, while things don’t quite go the romance route, there is definite sexual tension between the two of them and this part really pops.

The entire pool sequence is, frankly, electric. Watching Tenka not let her walls down, but also doing so just a tiny bit? It’s strong stuff and we also get a very valid explanation about where Sion’s attitude and blowhard nature come from.

Yeah, the other girls are missed, but only in the sense that they’re interesting too. Otherwise? Tenka absolutely carries this entire volume on her own, although Sion makes a great escort for her.

Like I said in my other review - these both have things to recommend them. This one is absolutely the stronger, but if you have room in your manga pile for both, I think they each have a place.

4.5 stars - the first little bit is good, but then the other 2/3’s is total dynamite. I’m rounding it up because it just might be the best we ever get from the series- but I am holding out hope it stays this strong.

"The moment it's over, the past disappears. There's no reason to cling to it. It's stupid to let it rule your life. Forget the past. That's what makes life fun."

This volume has been one of my favorite volumes this month, and honestly, one of my favorite volumes in the series!

It's no secret how I've shared of tearing up in previous volumes, but there was something incredibly moving about this volume in seeing how far Tenka has come. I was deeply touched by Sion's words and how he helped Tenka in her struggle of not being able to recall certain memories. One of my favorite "quotes" from Haikyuu! is "We Don't Need the Memories" from Inarizaki High's "mantra" for their team, and hearing another manga series share about not clinging to the past really hit me afresh.

I think it especially hit me hard for Tenka's journey because we can see the old her, who she was at the beginning, to finding genuine joy near the end. Her smile really did me in, and I was about to start crying at my kitchen table because Tenka has tried and worked so hard, and I LOVE the idea of her making brand new memories and experiences that make her life funnier than it ever has been. <3

I am once again strongly recommending this series to anyone who enjoys reading about idols but would prefer not to have a romance plot and wants something that shows the hardships of becoming an idol. You really NEED to read this series! Tenka's journey has been one of the most satisfying stories I have ever read, especially when I think back to how it took three tries to get into this series because of how much I did not like her at first. *hides*

Bring on volume seven! I'm ready to continue to see our girl shine!!

Vol. 1 ★★☆☆☆
Vol. 2 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 3 ★★★★☆
Vol. 4 ★★★★☆
Vol. 5 ★★★★☆

The stakes aren't as high in this volume. It's mostly about Tenka getting closure and letting go of the past. Seeing as she does have chemistry with Sion, I'm curious as to whether it will develop into a full-fledged romance; we all know how rabid kpop stans get when their oppas start dating. Also, I'm fond of how nonsensical the plot of the mv is.

I still don’t ship Sion and Tenka together no matter how many cute moments they have.

SCREAMING at Tenka struggling to frolic and show carefree joy.

I feel for Sua. I can’t even imagine how she must feel being a trainee in such a cutthroat, ageist industry.

Tenka's gaining confidence, and a toned body, via her training with the troupe. But what happens when it's time to record a music video with a boy band, and she's called upon to show innocent joy, not an emotion that comes naturally to her? Maybe a new bikini, and a nighttime encounter with Sion, will light the way...

My favorite volume yet! Tenka grows so much in here, and it's not through her usual methods of solitude and focus, but rather from just letting go. She has fun and it makes her stronger.

I enjoy this series so much! This next book continues with the engaging story, beautiful art, and "can't put down"- ness.
