Thirteen years ago, Orin McCabe was a family man living a privileged life in the California suburbs. Today, he's condemned to death row for murdering his entire family in an unexpected fit of hammer-wielding brutality. In the aftermath of his heinous crime, it's fallen to a trio of eclectic, but dedicated, ghost hunters—Jacob, the holy man; Holland, the skeptic; and their leader, Del, a true believer in the occult and worlds beyond—to surveil the abandoned McCabe home in search of proof for the existence of the undead . . . and whatever supernatural source may have possibly fueled McCabe’s inhuman massacre. But this ill-matched and uneasy squad of investigators is about to discover something much more terrifying than any ordinary spirit. . . . Something much more pernicious, much more contagious, that if not contained, could take full advantage of America's unquenchable appetite for violence and deliver a plague of blood unto us all . . .

A horror graphic novel read through netgalley.

I loved the twists and turns of this and the art style lent itself so beautifully to the story, but it's really not for the weak-hearted. A team of three young people check out haunted houses recording their journey of "cleansing" these places, untill one of them gets too deep, and too invested in a way that's out of his control, in the tragedies behind each place.

We've got ghosts, hauntings, serial killers, propehcies. Everything is here, and this has to be one of the surprises of the year

A Rotten Haunted House Story!

Michael W. Conrad & Dave Chisholm have given us a ghost story packed full of so much trauma. Not only does this trauma help guide the story, but it also leads readers to some of the scariest ghosts I've come across in literature. (If you like A24's Talk to Me - think that level of scary ghost)! Guiding the story are Del - the ringleader believer, Holland - the snarky nonbinary skeptic, & Jacob - the adorable exorcist. As they investigate a scene so evil, it becomes clear that where they think they are helping, it might be attaching itself to them.

This story has some deep meaning. It is all about the ghosts we create as we interact with the world and the consequences that follow. This becomes clear from the very first issue and it sets a very unsettling tone for the rest of the volume. You absolutely should be checking this graphic novel out!

Thank you to Oni Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars.

A man murders his whole family in an unexpected killing spree. Afterwards, as he is on death row, a group of ghost hunters enter the house where the events happened, looking to see if demonic influences were involved, and get more than they bargained for.
This was a brutal and bloody graphic novel, that doesn't shy away from violence. I really liked the illustrations and colour palette, I just wasn't as gripped by the plot as I hoped I would be.

"It's like the air itself wants you to know, this place is different, it's seen things."

Michael W. Conrad and Dave Chisholm's graphic novel is about a team of ghost hunters that enter a house with a history of violence to cleanse it. What they did not expect was something from this house to stick with them, that if it spreads will only result into violent and macabre chaos.

This was a quick but unsettling one to read. The ghost hunters visit this house where a brutal attack happened years prior resulting into a man slaughtering his entire family. The remnants of the energy in that house still linger and have a choakhold on what happens throughout this story.

The scenes of brutal attacks are vivid with gore and depravity, the downward spiral the characters find themselves in is imagined in the best way possible.

Although dark this was interesting and entertaining.

Many thanks to @onipress for the copy.

My thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for an advance copy of this graphic novel that is both a horror story and a meditation on the violence that is present in our society, how it effects our thinking, our interactions with others, and how it feeds the beast that we all have, a beast that is always looking for ways to be free,

My father worked odd hours when I was young, a way for him to make more money, get his family out of the city and out in the country where safety was always imagined. He commuted to Manhattan during the afternoons or late at night, and I would go with him to spend the night with my grandparents. Dad would always talk about how cars would in mass seem to slow down in different areas, drive slow for a bit, and again in mass start speeding again. Dad blamed this on people picking up the energy from old accidents, bad ones, where people probably died. People would hit these accident sites, hours, even days later and somehow just know something had happened. I noticed this myself when I was driving, in fact slowing down a few times just because it made sense to. Trauma leaves an afterimage, something we pick up on, but don't know how to process. I can understand this. Maybe this feeling is growing. This also could explain much, why certain days many of us feel the world can't get worse. And it does. Maybe even make some start to act in strange ways. Violent ways. Plague House written by Michael W. Conrad and illustrated and lettered by Dave Chisholm, is a story of ghosts, regret, revenge, and the anger in us all, and how that anger is trapped and hurts others in ways we never think about.

Ghosts are big business in America, and nothing is better for clicks and attention than a murder house that might be loaded with ghosts. And more. Three ghost hunters, Del the nominal leader and true believer in the supernatural, Jacob a man scarred in many ways by his religious upbringing, and Holland a true skeptic in everyway have found a great one. Thirteen years earlier Orin McCabe was considered a paragon of his community. Until the night he entered his home and killed his entire family with a hammer. The house is still there, and these ghost hunters are determined to investigate either to find something, heal something, or bust something. What they find splits their group up in different ways. Something was in that house, something might have left with them, and something is causing bad things to happen. Trauma leaves a stain, a stain that might destroy these hunters.

A dark story that is not only a good horror story, but a story that looks at how America deals with the violence that seems to be all around us. Conrad has created characters with pasts that they are still dealing with, finding dead bodies, growing up in religious homes, growing up in non-traditional ways. Added to that is well something. The shadow of death, a creature of the night, something that goes bump, only much worse. There is a lot going on in what seems like a simple story. The art is good, really good. Weird, simple, dark, scary and realistic. I have been a fan of Dave Chisholm's musical graphic novels, especially in jazz. To see him doing art like this, is really revealing in how good an artist he is.

A book that surprised me in what it talked about and where it went. One I won't forget easily. I look forward to more collaborations between these two.

My Selling Pitch:
How to solve a haunted house? With gory Americana revenge killings! Right?

Pre-reading:
October is really just Sam reads every spooky graphic she can get her grubby little hands on

(obviously potential spoilers from here on)
Thick of it:
I don’t like the art style. It's a bit Monster House.

So not hot priest.

OH SHIT, THAT’S GORY.

Fuck family annihilators, man.

The star blood spray deal is morbid but bomb.

I like the floorplan endpapers.

The school shooting one is brutal, sheesh.

Good for her/him murders are not for me lol.

The deaths in this are brutal!

Okay, I don’t love the way the artist draws faces, but the art is so expressive and well-composed.

I do like that it's one of the revenge thrillers that reminds you an eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind.

Post-reading:
This was pretty solid. I didn’t initially like the art style, but I came to appreciate it by the end. There were some really beautifully composed panels. The deaths are deliciously gory. There’s an appropriately liberal slant to this. I think the school shooting dig is very timely. I’m also not a good for her girly so I appreciated that while this sets you up to believe it's advocating for revenge killings, it ultimately reminds you that everybody has a reason to kill. It's still killing. I think the art is really what’s holding me back from giving this a 5. The plot’s a little lackluster too. It’s been done a lot, and we dont get much backstory to endear us to the characters. They're just kinda there. Still, if you're a fan of the genre, it's worth the quick flip through if only to appreciate the art’s silent attention to detail.

Who should read this:
Good for her/him fans
Ghost hunting fans
True crime fans

Ideal reading time:
Spooky season!

Do I want to reread this:
No, I’ll just remember it.

Would I buy this:
No, but I wouldn't be upset if I had bought it. I just don't love the art enough to seek it out.

The premise and set up of this graphic novel was awesome. I love the opening panel of the three ghost hunters in front of a haunted house. The art style is very unique and the artist did a great job playing with colors to evoke certain atmospheres and emotions. You could feel tension rising as the colors turned more vibrant, more somber with desaturated tones, and downright explosive when the page was dominated by red and black. I liked the idea of three very different characters being part of this ghost hunting team—Holland, the skeptic, Jacob, the holy man, and Del, the obsessive and misguided. You could easily see how each person will play a vital role and I was ready to see how they interacted with one another as they tackle haunted spaces. The only problem is that we only focus on Del.

Spoilers ahead

I don’t understand the purpose of fleshing out characters when you were only going to have the groups disband very early on anyways. After that, it was just the Del show. I thought the author had some interesting takes on ethics, moral dilemmas, and vigilante justice until it turned out I was reading into it, and he was just killing people. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for people-killing in horror books, but it just wasn’t impactful the way it was done. The visual horror elements were there and even nauseatingly detailed at times, but the story was so lackluster. It’s just one long stream of consciousness rambling of an unreliable man with nothing learned or explained.

It just ended up being a bit of a let down, unfortunately.

I just finished reading this graphic novel and I have to say it's an absolutely insidious attraction! The narrative dives deep into a world of murder horror and terrifying supernatural mysteries, yet it’s presented with stunningly vibrant artwork and bright colors—an artistic contradiction that works incredibly well! The way the 'flashy' visuals lure us into the gloom of the story is truly a brilliant charm. Conrad’s pacing is sharp, fast, and captivating, making it an absolute binge-read.

Crucially, the author constantly lets us figure out the answers for ourselves, especially concerning the relationship between the main trio of ghost hunters. Their dynamic faces a breaking point rooted in misunderstanding and the haunting truth following the incident at the McCabe House. It is this rupture within the team that ultimately leads to personal and public tragedies far greater than any ghost! I secretly wished he would have expanded on the story of the other ghost hunters a bit more, as both of them were unique and intriguing characters in their own right.

What makes this book profound isn't just the killing; it's the exploration of the protagonist's psyche: was his entire action controlled by a malevolent energy, or was it simply his own delusion? This graphic novel will leave you wrestling with fundamental questions about identity and responsibility. But how it all ends? You'll have to read it to find out!

I've got this graphic novel from NetGallery.

Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC! "Plague House" drew me in with the incredible, vivid illustrations, but I stayed for the story. The writing invites the reader in on the speculation.
The postmodern take on the classic ghost-hunting crew is interesting, but the story quickly shifts focus to Del, and almost exclusively Del, by the end. Del has little to no emotional/social awareness but is capable of deep thought.
He defends his friends; at least he sticks up for Holland, but doesn't understand their decision to break off from him after the interview. I wish this aspect of his personality were touched upon more. Is he selfish? Aloof? *Plagued* by the self-righteous call to action that compels him to follow up on his investigations?
I like the idea of the skeptical Holland being unable to handle the reality of their brutal world after an investigation opens their mind to it all at once, in contrast to Del, who has been aware since childhood.
"Plague House" was an enjoyable read with dynamic and striking visuals. I recommend to fans of The Umbrella Academy, Vol. 1: Apocalypse Suite by Gerard Way & co.

Plague House takes the haunted house trope and puts an interesting spin on it. Houses become haunted, and we can become haunted by houses as well...or we can simply become haunted individuals. The main characters are ghost hunters. True to life, each person gets into paranormal investigations because of their own life experiences. These may be having paranormal visitations in childhood, being raised in various types of religion, hoping for proof of an afterlife....et al. What I liked about the writing is that so much of it describes what paranormal experiences and haunting are actually, usually, like. Most people feel something when they're in a haunted house. Delving into the paranormal can take you places you don't expect and are not ready for, or even want.
I'm not a fan of graphic novels and requested this not realizing the genre. However, I read it because I felt obligated to read and review it and was pleasantly surprised that it reminded me of my own paranormal experiences and the intuitive nature of knowing when a place or person is haunted.

I flew through this because I was hooked! The balance between emotional storytelling and pure terror works incredibly well. And even though I’ve read a lot of great graphic novels recently, this one still stands out as an exciting and memorable horror experience for me.

Honestly, the twist at the end of chapter 2 wasn’t the most original idea, but it still shocked me. I wasn’t ready for it, because I thought this was just another light ghost-hunting story. I was wrong, lol. It turned out to be darker, gorier, and much more violent than I expected.

The art was stunning. Dave Chisholm captured every scene with striking detail. The atmosphere, the fear, the raw emotions. His use of shadows, bold colors, and panel composition elevates the horror instead of just showing it. It feels cinematic and alive in a terrifying way.

Unfortunately, I feel like the story wrapped up a little too quickly. I wish we had more time to explore Holland and Jacob’s stories, their growing chemistry with Del, and the emotional layers behind their motivations. There was definitely room to dig deeper before the finale.

*3.75 rating rounded up.

Thanks to Michael W. Conrad, Oni Press and Netgalley for a complimentary e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was an interesting stand alone graphic novel that has some really cool philosophy and psychedelic imagery as we follow ghost hunter Del, who is very much haunted by the things he sees, leading him to take actions that effect everyone around him. This had some cool imagery and interesting story but ultimately felt a little bit lacking at the conclusion - i wish there had been a little more centered around the mythos that was drawn on, but this also felt like a story that was happy to keep the details vague.

Strong artwork and cool character designs, along with some pretty gnarly body horror really make this graphic novel pop and I was interested and intrigued throughout. I'd definitely be intrigued to check out more by this writer and I can see they've worked on some pretty amazing stuff already such as In Bloom and Superman.

(Diversity inclusion worth mentioning here is that one of the three ghost hunters is non-binary, and their identity was validated throughout by the main protagonist)

I liked this one quite a bit! I was really invested in the story, the characters were all well established, and the art was captivating! I wasn’t expecting the plot to be as deep and meaningful as it was, but I very much enjoyed it and it kept me hooked throughout. Also there’s a Non-binary side character which was unexpected but very much appreciated!

I’m not completely sure, but I believe this is a standalone as the ending seemed very final, however if there is ever any more to this story, or potentially any spin off stories set in this world, I would be so sat! I’m definitely interested in reading more from this author and the illustrator in future!

Definitely recommend Plague House to anyone who likes a bit of ghost hunting and gore along with some stunning visuals!

This is definitely a fun October read. I think it's closer to 3.5 stars for me, but I don't know if I can bump it to a 4. It was really fun to read, but it definitely feels like an unpolished indie comic that you'd see in a zine or something. Like, there's too much story for how short it is, so things happen very abruptly and it's sort of hard to follow. Like, one panel to the next, a character seems to jump years forward in time out of nowhere and the ending just sort of jumps out at you. I did enjoy what I read a lot, but it would have been really cool to have a longer version of this that's fleshed out a bit better. Still, I'd recommend it for sure!

I received an ARC through NetGalley and this is my honest review.

A haunted house story that has an interesting concept about places and their memory. It's pretty dark and gore-y, and it raises questions without really answering them, letting the reader make an interpretation.

For me, it kind of lacked the suspense and creepiness I expected, focusing more on violence and gore.

Also good to note that the nonbinary side-character is misgendered consistently by everyone who isn't the main character, even after being corrected several times. I wasn't a fan of that, I would have liked more pushing back on it.

Plague House is a story about ghost hunters who document paranormal sightings. The story begins in a house haunted by the spirits of the family which was murdered by their father. The beginning is somewhat predictable but I really enjoyed the direction it took in the latter half of the story.

The dark and gritty art style really complements this story and I highly recommend it to horror and thriller fans!

First off, many thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this book as an eARC! I greatly appreciate it!
This was interesting, but also pretty confusing. Maybe that's part of the appeal. Horror can definitely be confusing and disorienting and unclear. The ending also felt super rushed, which I've noticed is a pretty common thing in graphic novels. I had a good time, though! Not the best time, but a good one!
Three stars out of five for Plague House!

This is OK. It's kind of boring even though it's supposed to be a horror comic. The leader of a paranormal group starts taking vengeance on the people who murdered the ghosts he encounters. At least, that's the intention. It doesn't come across all that well though. This book also has some of the worst covers I've even seen with this theme of half a face and a building.

WOOooF!
This was crazy!

I am so thankful to Oni Press, NetGalley, and Michael W. Conrad for advanced digital access to this title before January 20, 2026.

We start with one man's passion project: ghost hunting, and then the episode spirals into an obsession that takes a downward turn, with people getting hurt and all sanity running out.

I am always appreciative of the work that goes into a graphic novel, from all angles, and this one was definitely well done.

I went into this story expecting a classic haunting tale, but this one took me for a ride. Theaters is tragic and dark, and you are left at the end just as unsure of thr narrator as to what is the truth. A good graphic novel eith a compelling storyline.
