From the manga-writer who wrote "home far away" aka broke my heart and ate the sharda I couldn't help but read "sleeping on paper boats". I'm jst glad I made it out relatively unscathed, almost happy even you don't realise the emotional horrors I had made up and braces myself before reading this one

One of the most beautifully written manga (series) I’ve ever read… Yatsuda Teki is not joking around when it comes to telling the most poetic and tragic story of two depressed homosexuals 😭
I can’t explain it but there’s just something about the way he writes his characters that it comes across as real people on paper. The actions & the expressions of the characters suit the story so well and the story line flows so easily that it’s digestible (even though the manga deals with difficult topics)
He has this skill of bringing deeply rooted and suppressed feelings into words and for that he quickly became one of my favourite mangakas…

A Home Far Away was one of my favourite mangas of 2024 and I think it’s safe to say that Sleeping On Paper Boats will be one of my top mangas of this year..

spent 75% of this series confused asf but the ending tied it all together very nicely. i liked this volume a lot more than the first because i could actually understand the characters and their motivations/actions. it felt very tragic and i was convinced the author wasn’t going to give us happy ending😭😭

Sorry but actually no I’m not sorry. I know this is a very loved BL but I thought this was a chore to get through. It was boring, which to me is the worst thing a book can be, and also some parts made no sense. Maybe I’m just stupid and don’t get this story and what the mangakas vision is but It was awful for me and I will be either donating or selling it.

Questo secondo volume di "Sleeping on the Paper Ship" mi è piaciuto più del primo, anche se ho continuato a trovare la lettura un po' difficile. L'atmosfera resta cupa e malinconica, ma è anche una delle cose che rendono il manga interessante. I disegni sono belli, delicati e trasmettono bene le emozioni anche senza tante parole. È un manga particolare, che va letto con calma.

Ci sono stati due elementi che mi hanno colpita. Il colpo di scena, inaspettato e ben inserito, che dà una scossa alla narrazione e cambia il modo in cui si guarda tutto il resto. E il finale semplice ma toccante. Anche se ho apprezzato queste cose, non sono riuscita a sentirmi del tutto coinvolta durante la lettura.

La copertina, anche questa volta, è bellissima.

Il mio voto è il seguente: 3 stelline su 5.

This story was a roller coaster of emotions, but it was so beautiful and beautifully written that I enjoyed every moment spent reading it, even when it was sad or depressing. It gave me inspiration, made me feel the need to pursue my passion for creating art—because what if someone, one day, falls in love with my art the way they fell in love with each other’s? The story was beautiful, and I especially loved the short scene/flashback of the main couple dancing together to the music of that man’s repeated song on the piano.

10/10, would definitely read again.

I wish this could get an anime adaptation as a movie.

Am I crazy because I kinda wanted a tragic ending? Maybe its just what I expected from this mangaka. Regardless, it wrapped up beautifully and I enjoyed it emmensly! It was such a philosophical read with so much depth. Im pretty sure I'll read anything by this mangaka at this point. Beautiful!

I was so beautiful, I teared up. I loved the atmosphere, the art style, the plot is intriguing and the characters are captivating. While reading it, it was as if I was getting drifted by a current of waves, the story flow without me noticing. I'm sure it changed me in a way and showed me a new perspective. It has a special place in my heart now. I would totally recommend reading it!

i am completely lost for words right now. i picked up this manga after it blew up on zerosetwt for being discovered as the gyubrik manga and then as fate would have it, i saw both volumes side by side at the bookstore. it felt like destiny was telling me to read it. the similarities between kei and yoichi to ricky and gyuvin (personality, dynamic, looks) are INSANE. my heart is so full reading this as i feel it's them in a different life, a different time.

this manga reads like poetry. it sweeps you off your feet, using words in a way i've never experienced; it's like i hadn't truly understood the beauty of language until now. there are so many beautiful lines that listing them all would essentially be the entire book. this may be the highest-quality writing i've seen in a manga.

the psychological depth is incredible. i feel like i know the two main characters inside and out. my heart ached for them, and all i wanted was for them to find happiness and escape the troubles haunting them. i was terrified the author might have them ultimately end their lives together, a twist that could have sent a problematic message regarding trauma and abuse, but it ended in the most perfect way. the story's twists were completely unexpected for me, adding a layer of mystery that i loved.

the ROMANCE. it develops so effortlessly, you can feel the yearning in every look, word, touch, scene. kei and yoichi love each other so much, and support each other through their troubles, their tumultuous careers and the ghosts that haunt them; even when they were in the dark about what the other was going through, they just wanted to be there to keep them alive, to keep them going. and that is just so beautiful. love just pours out of the pages, and i was completely immersed in kei and yoichi's story until the end. nothing else mattered while i was reading this. i just love when writing can transport you to a different time and mindset, letting you live lives you otherwise would never have experienced. _sleeping on paper boats_ does that and more.

i also loved the post-WWII japan setting. all the little details of alleyways, bustling inns, the cinema, and elements of writing and photography that were true to that time came together so beautifully. it's incredible how a story so short could have had this profound of an impact on me.

i'll be thinking about kei and yoichi for a long time. their story feels timeless, and i know it will never leave me. this manga feels like it was made for me, and is completely my style: a perfect mix of ethereal, flowing writing, atmospheric details, yearning and passion, love and sorrow, utter devastation, stunning artwork, and story twists that keep you on the edge of your seat, rooting for the main characters. this is a true gem.

This volume truly feels more contemplative than the first. The first volume is bursting with fraught emotions and a tension that feels like it will tear the characters apart. On the other hand, this volume forces the characters to slow down and think.

It's devastating to read this volume and realize how painful the memories Kei had suppressed were. His childhood was far from perfect. He had to bear witness to his parents' suicide, and on top of that be 1 of 2 survivors of a crash. Anyone, but especially a child, would struggle to cope with such a thing. I appreciated, though, how it comes to light that death had never really been in control of Kei. It was Kei's own childhood self that was begging and pleading to be seen and heard. Kei had to face his past in order to feel free to pursue his future.

I loved, as well, that Kei and Yoichi's relationship juxtaposed to that of Kei's parents. Despite Kei's conflicting desires on whether he wants to live or die, ultimately he doesn't truly want to share the same end that his parents did. He would rather die himself than sacrifice Yoichi. Both of them, honestly, struggle grappling with the intense emotions they feel for each other, and therefore the pain they can cause one another. Ultimately, it resolves in a clear notion that they both want to live. They still have plenty of dreams they want to see actualized, and this is only possible if they both live. They don't want to and shouldn't recreate the tragedy of Kei's parents.

My one irritation with the two volume series remains the same, but in this volume Kei and Yoichi trade places. Yoichi preemptively decides to leave Kei so that his life cannot be used to blackmail Kei. This ends up being a misguided decision as Kei had already realized information that he could use to guarantee that Yoichi's life wouldn't be in danger again. So, thanks to Yoichi's actions, they end up being separated for 3 years. It was so annoying to me to see how Yoichi was all like "Damn, I sure wish Kei still thinks about me a little sometimes 😔" as if Kei didn't make a WHOLE ASS MOVIE about them AND as if it wasn't Yoichi's fault that they weren't currently together! 🤦‍♀️ At least Kei did point out that it was Yoichi's fault, this time around, that they were separated for so long.

Anyway. I don't want to get lost in the sauce. My point is that both their lil acts of trying to be a martyr were aggravating as hell! But it doesn't mean I didn't still enjoy the story overall. It was sweet to see how Kei and Yoichi couldn't help but gravitate towards one another again and again, and ultimately they were able to create a future together. Not much more I can ask for from a story like this 😌

In the end, we learn that Kei wasn't literally tainted by death. It was just that at first, he believed that death was all he deserved to be close to, until he realised that someone else's ending wasn't his carry, their departure is their own and it doesn't have to be his end of the story as well. (Especially because the director had commandeered the deaths to fit the narrative that Kei had been confined to: one shaped around self-blame. Starting from the death of his parents.) With looking into his past and visiting the grave of one of the people he centred one of his scripts around, Kei learned that his words frame people in light, not in darkness, and that he had abandoned the lonely little boy in him that was still stranded in the wreck he strives so hard to escape from. I think there's something incredibly powerful in that message. About how parts of us may stay in harms way if we don't lift every part of ourselves along with us. It takes great perseverance to see yourself in totality, to look into every part, to see you're not plagued, but that your pieces are just scattered. Never ruined. They're just waiting to be collected. Confronted. Hugged. And stuck back together.

Another moment that stayed with me were Yoichi's words about his photography, the red of the fire from that day, and how the memory of the flames seems to tint his own photographs vermillion. Thats a beautiful way of re-figuring trauma as something that is part of us, and to showcase that memories don't only have to serve to haunt us. They can also be part of what makes us stronger. And such, make the art of script-writing and photography an individual, powerful expression. Not just because they survived, but because they'll go on to live.

Sleeping on Paper Boats feels, to me, like a story about acceptance. About recognising when it's time to let the past go, while still embracing the marks it left behind. The ink of fire left across Kei’s skin is more than a scar, just as Yoichi’s struggle to be himself is more than a tragedy. Neither is a burden they have to carry or hide. They are reminders of everything their bodies and souls endured to bring them this far. But now, they can make space for something more: their real selves, their true desires, and the lives and work they choose for themselves. Kei no longer has to hide his scars, and Yoichi no longer has to mask who he is. They survived by becoming who they needed to be; now, they get to become who they truly are.

Most importantly, that day on the train doesn’t have to be erased for them to move forward. It can remain a part of what happened, without having to remain the thing that defines them. They can carry it differently now, and make room for a life beyond simply surviving it. Together.

Este tomo me gusta muchísimo más que el anterior.

Comenzamos a tener respuestas y saber más acerca de los protagonistas, a entender por qué actúan de la forma que actúan y piensan de la forma en la que piensan. Todo empieza a encajar y ambos comienzan a crecer.

Ahora, quizá mi problema es que este tomo parece pertenecer a una historia diferente al del primero. Hace falta cohesión, más allá de que los personajes y el contexto sean los mismos. Si bien se empiezan a responder algunas cuestiones, no son de preguntas que se hayan planteado en el primer tomo, sino en este. Lo que intento decir es que las temáticas son tan diferentes que lo que pasa en este tomo no parece tener que ver con lo que pasa en el primero. Por ejemplo: nunca se menciona al padre de Kei, ni a su madre, ni se deja entrever que Azuma pueda tener malas intenciones. Creo que con haber agregado algunas pistas en el primer tomo, todo lo que pasa en este segundo no parecería salido de la nada.
Incluso la sensación es distinta: en el primero todo es histeria, locura, un ritmo vertiginoso; en este todo es más realista, más pausado.
No digo que esto sea algo malo, pero la sensación final es la de falta de cohesión.

Aún así, me gusta mucho la resolución de las diferentes tramas.

El arte, como siempre, es extraordinario y el punto más fuerte del manga.

A pesar de que ya había leído esta historia antes y no me había convencido del todo, no me la había podido sacar de la cabeza. Hay varios elementos que me gustan MUCHO y creo que vale la pena leerla sólo por ellos.

OMG, if this hadn’t been a happy ending, I genuinely would have cried. This duology was absolutely beautiful...and the ART? STUNNING. Every panel felt so carefully crafted and I was blown away with how beautiful all of them were.

While I do think there are a few plot holes that are difficult to overlook, they never took away from the heart of the story for me. Watching Kei and Yoichi fall so deeply in love, not only with each other but also through their shared devotion to forms of art, was incredibly moving. Their relationship felt earned from all of the longing, misunderstanding, sacrifice, and growth you watch them go through.

And can we talk about the fact that this is a post war historical BL? We seriously need more of these. The setting added so much depth to the story, especially in the way it explored social expectations, identity, and the limitations placed on the characters.

What I loved most about this was how it handled trauma and healing. Neither Kei nor Yoichi is a perfect character, and the story never tries to simplify the emotional scars they carry from their childhoods. Instead, it allows them to be messy, complicated, and deeply human. This is definitely a BL I would recommend to anyone who loves yearning, emotional complexity, beautifully flawed characters, and a story that hurts before it heals. Heartbreaking at times, but ultimately so fulfilling.

Dieser Band schließt nahtlos an die Ereignisse des vorherigen an. Es ist daher ein großer Vorteil und sehr zu empfehlen, die beiden Bände direkt hintereinander zu lesen, um im Fluss der Geschichte zu bleiben.

Inhaltlich machen die Figuren wichtige Schritte nach vorne. Kei stellt sich den Schatten seiner Kindheit, während Yoichi seinen eigenen Weg als Fotograf finden muss. Zwischendrin bekommt die Geschichte zudem ein kleines Thriller-Element verliehen. Dieses sorgt nicht nur für Spannung, sondern erklärt auch schlüssig die rätselhaften Ereignisse in Keis Leben.

Für mich persönlich ist dieser Band sogar besser als der erste. Das liegt wahrscheinlich daran, dass es hier keine verschwommenen Ebenen mehr zwischen Traum und Wirklichkeit gibt, was durchaus wie eine bewusst gewählte erzählerische Entscheidung wirkt.

Die Zeichnungen bleiben auf einem sehr hohen Niveau. Ein kleiner Kritikpunkt fällt beim Lesen jedoch auf: Kei und Yoichi sehen sich in manchen Zeichnungen optisch etwas zu ähnlich, was gelegentlich zu Verwechslungen führen kann.

Eine gelungene Fortsetzung, die den Vorgänger für mich sogar noch übertrifft. Beide Bände zusammen bilden ein starkes Werk und erhalten von mir eine klare Leseempfehlung.

Diese Dilogie hat zu mir gesprochen und etwas ganz Spezifisches in mir geheilt.

"Sleeping on Paper Boats" ist sinnlich und poetisch erzählt, man nimmt sich Zeit, man reflektiert und gibt den Figuren Tiefe und Farbe. Was mit moralischen und existenziellen Ängsten unseres Protagonisten beginnt, entwickelt sich im zweiten Band nach außen in sein Umfeld hinein, das diese Ängste in ihm installiert hat. Wo man am Anfang noch an etwas Böses, Übernatürliches glaubt, erkennt man am Ende die tragische Wahrheit einer Familie.

Ganz ehrlich: Im ersten Band hatte ich etwas Angst, in welche Richtung das hier gehen wird. Die beiden Twists und das Ende des zweiten Bands haben all diese Angst zerstreut.

"Sleeping on Paper Boats" ist Kunst über das Kunstschaffen an sich und geht dabei dunkle, unerwartete Wege, an deren Ende kein Doomed Yaoi wartet, wie es das Genre einfordert, sondern eine Geschichte über das Ganzwerden – eine Romanze zweier *Männer*, aber auch eine Romanze *zweier* Männer.

Dieser Manga wird mir lange im Gedächtnis bleiben. Ich bin sehr dankbar, dass es ihn gibt. Er fühlt sich beinahe an, als wäre er extra für mich gezeichnet worden. Danke, Teki Yatsuda. <3

(continuo quello che avevo iniziato a scrivere sullo scorso volume)
il problema del quale l'autrice si è ficcata è principalmente la parte spirituale dell'opera: essendo ambientata nel nostro mondo e non in un setting fantasy, c'era il problema della risoluzione della "Possessione della morte". Da come viene descritta nel primo volume sembra davvero che ci sia una sorta di possessione, succedono cose che escono dalla mente e dalla percezione singola del protagonista e quindi hanno conseguenze sugli altri personaggi, eppure ad un certo punto sembra che tutti i problemi siano stati causati da una terza persona che voleva solo sfruttare il talento del protagonista.
Nulla di male in questa scelta, ma con come era stata strutturata la possessione... mi ha fatto storcere il naso.

Il resto invece procede liscio come l'olio: il fatto che "il demone" sia una manifestazione di ricordi soppressi e l'intera storyline del padre mi è piaciuta tantissimo.
Non vedo l'ora di leggere altro di suo.

siamo nel 1949 in Giappone. Qui Kei, un famoso sceneggiatore, crede che sia colpa sua se le persone da cui ha preso ispirazione per le sue opere muoiono, così ha smesso di scrivere. Una sera incontra Yoichi, un aspirante fotografo, e la voglia di scrivere torna prepotentemente in lui. I due uomini poi scoprono di essere legati da un evento doloroso che molti anni fa li ha segnati.
La storia tra Kei e Yoichi è un viaggio verso la consapevolezza di sé stessi e del proprio passato.
Questi due volumi sono cupi, sono un lungo percorso verso la luce. A tratti li ho trovati anche leggermente inquietanti, con il sogno che si mescola alla realtà: non si capisce dove finisce l'uno e inizia l'altro. Ma ho apprezzato ogni pagina, perché sono entrata completamente nella storia.
Credo che sia uno dei manga più originali che abbia mai letto, bellissimo!

O no me explican qué le lleva a literalmente abandonar a Kei cuando ya estaba todo aclarado o yo no lo he entendido, pero mal de ambas formas. Me alegra que se encuentren y que terminen juntos pero qué frustrante no entender por qué se va.

Hay cosas que me han gustado y cosas que no he pillado, o frases tan poéticas que no sabía que me estaban diciendo, así que me he quedado un poco meh al final, no sé si con el tiempo y pensando un poco en ello querré quedármelos o no, veremos.
