Alan Moore is an English writer most famous for his influential work in comics, including the acclaimed graphic novels Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell. He has also written a novel, Voice of the Fire, and performs "workings" (one-off performance art/spoken word pieces) with The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels, some of which have been released on CD.

As a comics writer, Moore is notable for being one of the first writers to apply literary and formalist sensibilities to the mainstream of the medium. As well as including challenging subject matter and adult themes, he brings a wide range of influences to his work, from the literary–authors such as William S. Burroughs, Thomas Pynchon, Robert Anton Wilson and Iain Sinclair; New Wave science fiction writers such as Michael Moorcock; horror writers such as Clive Barker; to the cinematic–filmmakers such as Nicolas Roeg. Influences within comics include Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Kirby and Bryan Talbot.

Mediocre early Alan Moore with mostly bad art (aside from one or two stories done by future top artists), but the EC style “twist ending” horror stories aren’t bad and show he always had the chops to write something like Tales of the Black Freighter. Abelard Snazz, the feckless “man with the multi-story mind” and the character on the cover, is pretty funny as well as a parody of some extremely unwise liberal scientist / technocrat. Not recommended, but you can see there’s something here

Loads of Alan Moore short comic stories from 2000AD gathered in one place and beautifully cleaned up art by various artists. I'm a sucker for stories like "Time Twisters" and "Future Shocks" - short tales of a few pages with a narrative that inevitably leads to a punch line. But Alan Moore is able to lead me down the path with such interest that I forget he's going to add that twist at the end. His characters' names in themselves tend to make me try to decode them. But I must say the time travel stories are brilliant. They do not just deal with the usual content of time travel stories but deal with the thorny issues which keep students up all night debating whether this is possible. The one story of a life lived backwards (think "Benjamin Button", if you are young, or Ilse Aichinger's "Story in reverse" if you've been around a while) still surprises with ideas despite being only a few pages long
A great and easy read which challenges

A collection of dozens of short, mostly black and white stories from the very beginning of Alan Moore's comics career. There are more than a few great ones in here, but the final page twist ending structure gets repetitive after reading a bunch of them in a sitting.

But they're also a fascinating look at Alan Moore as a writer before he became ALAN MOORE, WRITER OF SWAMP THING/WATCHMEN/V FOR VENDETTA/etc. It's a lot of fun to watch him learn to craft a tight comics story by doing it over and over. For those who only know Moore from his more famous major works, watching him start to become that writer adds another dimension to his body of work.

A bit hit or miss but it was good to see a couple of my all time favourite Alan Moore stories in the Time Twisters section (loved this section). The Reversible Man, a tribute to the Philip K Dick classic, Counter Clock World and Chrono Cops. Chrono Cops predicting the future of an alliance between Labour and the Tories, which happened in the most recent Scottish council elections, where the two of them buddied up to stop SNP in several councils. No wonder they are both hated.

It's a fun series of short (usually a couple of page) sci-fi comics from the '80s. What I found most interesting was seeing the progression of Alan Moore's writing throughout the book (it isn't really until near the end that some of the stories become recognizable as a story by Moore), and also seeing early work by some of the best artists in the biz.
