Humanity is desperate, scattered amongst the stars at the mercy of the planets that will have us, but mostly we have nothing. No hope, no prospects, nothing. Poverty, crime, disease, we’re the running joke among the highly advanced alien species that surround us. We’re desperate, all of us, but we’re not entirely without worth… without use. Humans are still good for cheap labor and entertainment, oh and breeding. Human women are great for breeding. That’s where the Solar Breeding Agency comes in. For a hefty fee and a dowry paid to our families, an alien in need of a surrogate can buy us.
Melody– I get it, most humans grit their teeth and bear it through their time with The Solar Breeding Agency. It’s a necessity, a way out of the shambles the Intergalactic Alliance has erected around us. But for me, it’s because I can’t stand another second trapped between these four walls. Where others wither and hunger, I have opportunities, but at what cost? Suffocation. Expectations that were never tailored to me. Only the concept of me, a smart, dutiful daughter. So, I put in my application. Once, twice, three times, then some more. It’s a shameful little secret, only until I feed back data from the planets I’m housed on for my father. All’s well that ends well, right? Only this time it’s not going to end well. This time I’m matched with a species that by all rights is dangerous and primitive. Class 3B. I’m not supposed to be here. I’m not supposed to want to stay with the hateful alien who bought me. I’m not supposed to enjoy his cool touch and his merciless slitted eyes.
Bred by Zyros is the second installment in the standalone Solar Breeding Agency series. Filled and stuffed to the brim with possessive alien mates, spicy alien… parts and a darker, grittier take on the genre.
4.5 stars! Are you looking for your next alien romance? Look no further! I'm a mood reader and change genres a lot and there's nothing better than the ol faithful alien smut.
I received this book as an eARC and I read it in less than 24 hours. If you're needing a quick read with a haunting backstory for the MMC, breeding kink, and great tension and spice, this is the book for you!
General vibes: snake monster, interstellar bride program, grumpy x sunshine
tw: miscarriage, infertility, difficult birth
Things I liked: - fancy 🍆 - 🪢 - commentary about colonization - bite-y - short and sweet - showed some thoughtfulness in dealing with the male experience of rape, miscarriage, and grief - fmc with a normal body type/ordinary
things I didnt like: - this had so many weird word mistakes. I highlighted a bunch and corrected them.Like mixing up confound and compound. while they look similar, very different meanings. really took me out of the story. which is unfortunate because I liked the story overall.
Oh my gosh, I’m totally blown away by this book! Penelope has written such a heartwarming and heartbreaking story. I’m so glad Zyros gets his happy ending. Just thinking about the matriarchy system on his planet makes me tear up. The disgusting mating environment they created is absolutely disgusting.
I love Zyros. To the people of Nyssara, he is wild and untamed. However, he is ruthless and holds righteous anger. Deep down, he’s been through a lot. He’s been abused, and it’s a shame that his people don’t see it because he’s a male. He just wants to break free from the choices that have been made for him. His body has been used, and he’s been forced as a breeder to create children for his people since there hasn’t been any since he was born. So he makes a choice himself and he chose Melody.
Melody is the necessary change that Zyros needed. Her ray of sunshine personality was something that was missing in Zyros life. She didn’t look at him like a piece of meat. She didn’t look at him as something to be used. Although you could argue that her purpose on Nyssara was to be used. She was hilarious and she stood her ground. My favorite parts are her with the Thryss. Such goofy creatures but they so fun and mischievous!
Alrighty, before I go all crying mode, I’ll spill on Zyros and Melody’s character. Zyros is a completed grumpy pants and may be the biggest one I’ve seen yet! I love it. He’s brooding and protective and guess what? Also has a dirty mouth and he knows how to use it.👀😂 Melody is sweet, very nurturing, and talkative. She isn’t afraid to fill in the void with her voice. Don’t let this fool ya, she’s all about giving her body to Zyros and doesn’t care if he does to her body.😂
This book if full of adventure, danger, humor, some goofball creatures that’s steal your heart, but also some angst, matriarchal abuse of power, sexual abuse (none on page) mentioned. You’ll also see healing, a found family, a new beginning. They deserve it.
Lastly, I would definitely check the trigger and content warnings.
Thank you to Penelope Mars for the E ARC of this book!
4.5 stars
"I've never bothered with human males. Somehow, that was more intimidating than being dic*ked down by something that looks only vaguely humanoid. I think that says more about human men than me."
I am an alien/monster loving girlie and I absolutely adored this book. It was on the shorter side, around 200 pages, but I didn't feel like the story was incomplete in any way, rushed, or missing information.
Zyros and Melody have my heart. I loved them so much and feel like they complimented each other so well. This story featured various traumas for both the FMC & MMC, but also managed to be light hearted and have quite a few laugh out loud moments. The simple fact that Zyros' trauma is something not usually talked about- well done.
Zyros was GIVING let me tell you- touch her and die vibes all the way. The fact he was absolutely obsessed with her and the way Melody stood up for him when he needed it most was perfection. "Not the Ether nor the wildest of storms would dare rip me from you. There is no line I won't cross or world I wouldn't burn to ensure you never forget that you are loved by me."
There was the perfect amount of spice and it was spicinnnn...Zyros' tail can do allll the things. Four hands too? SAY LESS.
I have read the first book in The Solar Breeding Agency series too (4 stars) and love that these are all interconnected standalones/feature a different MMC & FMC in each book. More alien breeds for us- YAY!
I really enjoyed Bred by Fafnir so the next in the series was a no brainer for me. I thought the character "Melody" had been sweet so it was nice seeing her center stage.
So why I hated it and will never re-read it.
- He bound her to him without permission. The kind of binding that will kill them if they go to long from each other. This bothered me because with the following plot devices the FMCs agency being stolen from her hit that much hard.
- I can appreciate standing up for topics like male rape. Getting hard is not an excuse to do the deed if the male is resisting. Having it come up at the end of the book as a convenient plot vehicle was not the way to go about doing it. Start early, start slow, and build up a societal outcry rather than just confused glances and thoughts grinding to a halt.
- Having her almost die during childbirth and then get scarred up down there was not a pleasant read. I guess it's a way to juxtaposition from other books where it's a sweet story device, but still no.
- The fact that no matter what the MCs do Zyros' species is going to die. They will go extinct and the MCs daughter will be the last one born.
- Another convenient plot device was that between the traumatic birth and the toxins in the planet Melody is now sterile. It shows that she will never need to leave him, and never have babies again.

Sweet, Spicy, Hot, and Angsty Alien & Human Romance
Bred by Zyros” by Penelope Mars is a sweet, spicy, hot, and angsty new alien romance. I loved this book and these characters so much! Book 2 in ‘The Solar Breeding Agency’ continues a dark and gritty take on fated mates, alien romances, and the themes of post-apocalyptic humanity and ‘Mars needs women’. I appreciated the level of detail Mars provided in Melody and Zyros’ backstories, especially their relationships with their families. These details added depth to the characters, their growth, and my investment in the story. Mars depicts Zyros as a layered and complex male lead, a grumpy male who quickly bonds with his sunshine mate and becomes very protective of her. Melody exhibits ‘first daughter’ tendencies; she is self-sacrificing to a fault, desperate for her parents’ love and acceptance, fiercely loving, highly intelligent, and driven by a strong sense of justice. These two main characters clash and connect amid a storm of complicated feelings, lust, and poor communication. I love the creativity in the writing, especially when describing the new alien species. I eagerly look forward to more books featuring the new species introduced at the beginning and the trading post.
Somedays I really wish authors who write smut would calm tf down with their titles. No one needs to know I am reading “bred by zyrvos”😒🙄😂😂😂 fr
It was overall a decent story. Easy read. Fmc was sort of annoying but it wasn’t horrible. MC was a grouch.
The writing was a bit disjointed esp when it came to smoothly unfolding all the background on these characters. It was a bit rudimentary. Step one-tell the reader one idea. Step two-go back a bit and tell yet another idea. Step 3-share new info that now makes the first bit of info not seem accurate. Etc. If you follow that line of writing and place the relationship bt the fmc and her parents-my paragraph will make sense. Or not. 😆🙄 Anyhoo.
Be aware if you don’t like reading about preg, dangerous births or permanent damage to the female post birth-DON’T read this book.
If you don’t like reading about men being forced to “mate” with other women in their species, DON’T read this book.
If you don’t like snakes. DONT read this book.
If you don’t like the idea of a couple being finished with one child thanks to a violent birth. DONT read this book.

Bred by Zyros was a delightful second installment in the Solar Breeding Agency by Penelope Mars!
If you've read the first book in the series Mars has stayed consistent in keeping the same charm and strangely cozy vibe. I know, I know, nothing about an alien breeding pair should be cozy but there's something about Alien men who go out of their way to give their women all of the comforts they can afford them while they settle into a new life together is heart warming.
Zyros is a grump, but with good reason! Feeling like he's out of options to save a dying people he turns to the last option. The solar breeding Agency. Melody is the sweet human who only wants to help in the most selfless way possible. Acting as a breeder. She's made a career of it. This time around, it's different with Zyros.
On top of the budding romance between these two there's also some nefarious political games being played behind the scenes that needs to be stopped.
The spice was tasteful, and what's not to love about a large snake man packing two surprises down below?
Hold on tight and find out just how hot a cold blooded Alien man can make you!
ARC Review I love naga books so I was super excited about this, though the pronunciation guide and vocabulary guide at the beginning was intimidating.
This started very slowly for me, the dialogue between the couple is very sparse and his is particularly monosyllabic and uninteresting. I considered giving up several times as so much time was devoted to the heroine trying to find something to wear and then something to eat.
But then, about halfway through, it suddenly jumps to life and I was fully onboard and couldn't stop reading! The relationship blossoms, the spice gets underway and the dialogue gets more and more swoonworthy! Not only is Zyros half snake, so we've got the coiling tail, he also has 4 arms and his thing is forked, has a knot and pinchers! Lots of unique features!
The whole point is for her to breed with him to save his species so it does go into pregnancy and baby stuff which I'm not personally into but I enjoyed his worry and fussing over her and the issues that arise for her.
Definitely a bit of a slow burn with a start that's a bit cluttered with the mundane, but you're well rewarded if you keep going!
3.75 stars. I really liked the plot and it kept me interested- this was a quick read. But it was definitely obvious this was an indie author. The writing needs work in terms of grammar, structure, vocab, formatting etc. Don’t get me started on how often this author used the word “slam”… I even counted: it was 43 times. “I slam my eyes open.” “My head slammed to the side.” “His tongue slams into me.” PLEASE STOP.
I also think some parts were very difficult to understand and/or visualize because the writing was so convoluted or poorly worded. There were also some plot holes and parts that didn’t make much sense.
I really liked Zyros and Melody and definitely liked their chemistry. The spice was decent too. I really liked how sweet he was. But there were a lot of strange/contradicting plot points - about how planet, her family relationships, the galactic alliance being shady and it getting swept under the rug, and others.
I went in with super high hopes for this one, coming off the back of Bred by Fafnir.... Sadly, it fell short.
The one thing that consistently grated on me was the inconsistencies with the timing system. If we're going to use a whole different system / names for day, hours, weeks, etc., make sure it is consistent throughout the entire text. One reference we have 'zentics' and the next we're back to 'hours'. It was irritating - mostly due to the fact I had to keep going back to check the guide at the start of the book. It took away from the overall enjoyment.
Overall, I think the main reason I wasn't vibing with this installment as much as I was it's predecessor, was the fact that there was too much written in some parts and simultaneously not enough in others. So much waffling and repeating for what seems like the sake of adding bulk to a passage. Some aspects dragged along, whilst others felt rushed. I know the premise of the plot is a short, fated-mates story that builds from the prior book, but more context would have made all the difference in many scenes.
In addition to this, the whiplash I was getting during many of the spicy scenes trying to figure out how the characters got into certain spots or positions. I want to enjoy the scene like the hoe I am, not have to wonder, How did they get there? Weren't they facing each other? Didn't that already happen?
For the most part, the book was enjoyable, but I just didn't love it as much as I did the first / as much as I had hoped I would.
*I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review*
I said this after I read the first book, and I am going to say it again on this book. The world building, the character development, and the plot progression are simply amazing. There was not a time where I was confused, concerned, or worried about where the book was going, who was in the book, and if there was going to be enough time in the remaining pages to wrap up the story lines that were created.
While this book did touch on a very hard topic for some people, it was done so in a way that felt forced, and it could be skipped over if it was not something that someone wanted to read about.
I do feel that the ending may have been slightly rushed, but it was good never the less.
I look forward to reading book three and seeing what planet and what species Penelope brings us too next!
Melody, my chaotic queen, you are absolute perfection 👑💅 I was already buzzing to dive into Bred by Zyros after falling head over heels for Bred by Fafnir, and OMG, the tiny glimpse of Melody in the first book had me so ready for her story! The moment she matched with Zyros, that quiet, mysterious Vrircik, I just knew it was going to be epic. 😍
These two are such a delicious mess—deeply flawed and damaged in their own unique ways, but that's what makes them SO special. They’re total opposites in every way, and I’m living for the dynamic! It’s not instantly steamy, but trust me, it gets there—Zyros cannot resist those irresistibly strong mating instincts, and honestly, who could? 🐍🔥
Another absolute delight from Penelope Mars, and I’m so here for more! I can't wait to see what’s next! ❤️❤️

Melody is our breeder that has been around the block or different aliens before. She knows what to do when she is labeled as a breeder. Helping others have a child is a blessing she loves to give. Zyros is a breeder of his own but unlike Melody he hasn’t consented to it. He was born as a breeder for the females but for thirty some years there hasn’t been any live blessings. His life has known no love or affection at all. That is until Zyros takes matters into his own hands and gets a breeder off world. He didn’t mean to find his mate while doing so. They have a fun relationship. Definitely the grumpy male sunshine female romance here. He is primitive where she isn’t. They do good together though. And when they breed it is a success not only for a blessing but a venom mating too.
Not gonna lie, I totally came here for the breeding and this delivered.
I haven’t read the first book in this series so I was coming into this pretty blank. It can definitely be read as a standalone.
Zyros is a male, ‘naga’-type alien who is required by his people to reproduce so in retaliation, he goes off world to a breeding agency to hire the FMC.
Despite the sexy-premise of the book, the characters deal with a lot of heavy topics (including miscarriage (not the FMC), infertility of an entire species, non-consent (not on page, just mentioned), a bit of PTSD, mention of slight (?) childhood neglect (with a depressed mother), and infertility following a difficult birth. Just a heads up in case these topics can be triggering for you.
I didnt think it could get better than Fafnir and here I am swooning over Zyros 🤤
Touch her and Die dominated this one and my god was it good!
The Plot was phenomenal! 🌟
I loved how we learnt snippets of the other characters that gave background on Zyros (poor baby) 😢 that lead to his decision to contact the Solar Breeding Agency..
Melody and Zyros are literal perfection and I cannot wait to see what's next from you Penelope!
This was heartbreaking, thrilling, panty wetting, soppy cute, goodness...
Keep it up Penelope! You just might be the next Ruby Dixon! (Im not joking) 🤩
*****I received this book as an ARC, this is a review and there may be some spoilers****
****Please make sure you read the trigger list first before reading as the storyline has some triggering aspects****
The love I have for grumpy men who are soft for their woman is REAL!! I loved reading this and seeing the softer side of men but my god does Penelope know how to make me SOB!
The backstory and the plot hit home for me, my heart bled for Melody and Zyros. Their journey was a rollercoaster but it’s one I would ride and cry over again and again!
I can’t wait for who is going to be next to get bred and the rollercoaster I’ll be on 🥹

I thought this was one pretty cute! I had a hard time with some of the writing format, but I got the picture eventually. The storyline between the FMC and MMC was adorable and I loved how devoted he was to her. It started off very dark and I understood that the author wanted to keep that darkness going with Zyros’ character, but also give him the grumpy personality of the grumpy/sunshine trope, but I feel like there was a little bit of a disconnect. In the end, I thought it was a cute quick read. I loved Bred by Fafnir and I think that one is still my favorite, but I’m looking forward to other book from this series.
By the title alone, you can gauge the utter ridiculousness of this story, but I can also say that Mars has perfectly toed the line between seriousness and witty humour, blending them seamlessly.
This book is not meant to be serious although it does address and handle with sensitivity the topic of SA. I found the characters engaging and they had beautiful arcs despite the short timeframe allotted by the page number.
This is a really fun read. It is a quick read. It is a creative story with otherworldly and outside the box descriptions. I found book one of this series just as engaging, and look forward to reading others in the series as they are released.
Arc reader here! Holy balls zyros and melody…can I just say I want this type of dynamic in a relationship? The touch her and 💀, the paint the whole forest in her enemies bl00d, making decisions for her but in a loving way since she’s used to taking care of others? I’m sooooo here for this duo. I ate this up in the matter of a sitting and when I tell you this book has the right amount of spicy, justice, and feminine rage as well as all those cutesy moments in between where they’re getting to know one another and fall for each other? I was thoroughly impressed with this book and I neeeed more
We are back with book 2 from Penelope mars and honestly it didn’t disappoint at all! This was a little different take than the first, but not in a bad way. We got to meet back up with melody and where she was headed. Who would have thought it was to a dwarf planted, that was critically endangered? Not only did we get two back stories upon the main characters we got to meet new species and we got 5 little side kicks or “little dudes”. Such an amazing second book. Excuse me while i wait patiently (not so patiently) for book three.
This is the second one for Penelope Mars and she has quickly become an immediate read for me. Seeing these books with breeding agency you might expect it to be focused on the breeding portion however the depth of topic covered in these books is surprising and enjoyable. She is really able to address some heavy topics with empathy and understanding. The worlds are well fleshed out and she paints pictures with her words. I can’t wait to see what she does next for this series! Definitely check the Trigger Warnings.
I loved it! Just like with the previous book, the worldbuilding was impeccable and characters really well constructed. I liked that it wasn't instalove, that they had to find their way to each other (and through Zyros' thick walls) over time. Both characters had difficult pasts and I loved how they supported each other while dealing with them. The ending was a little bittersweet (the couple had an amazing HEA, just the circumstances were a little depressing), but it really fit the story. Highly recommended!
I really loved the other book in this series but this one just rubbed me the wrong way. From the start the ml saw the fl as prey, weak or something to own and posses and I get that he wasn’t treated well by his kind and objectified but he saw her as how he was seen -not equal thats for sure- and the fl was into it and all cause she was doing everything she could to make her father angry cause they wanted her to be a pretty perfect obediant daughter. But ı wouldhave wanted their relationship to be more equal honestly.
I'm just getting into alien romance books. I've read a couple in the past but let me tell you this one sets the bars pretty high for other alien romance in the future. I've read the first book in the series and loved that one and I think I may love this one even more. Zyros and Melody are great characters. I love the whole grumpy/sunshine trope they have going on and their story is sweet, heart breaking and funny. I'm excited to see who the next couple will be in the series!
I knew immediately after reading book 1 in The Solar Breeding Agency series that I had to get my hands on book 2! Melody absolutely hooked me in book 1, and I needed to know what her story would entail, and it definitely didn't disappoint! If one of your favorite tropes is Grumpy/Sunshine, this book serves! There's spice, intergalactic world, aliens, humor, and heartfelt moments. Melody is 100% my fave.
Just as the first book Bred by Fafnir, Bred by Zyros was a shorter read with a good story line. I enjoyed watching Melody and Zyros fall in love even though Zyros was a big ol grump. The Thryss were entertaining characters and kept me giggling. I really like when Penelope writes about serious human issues and the women get to educate and help their males through these issues.

Absolutely loved this book! Received an ARC copy, and devoured it in one night. Fabulous FMC who heals the MMC in ways he didn't know he needed by just being herself. The way the author covered such a delicate issue (SA against a male) was extremely well done in my opinion, and I absolutely can't wait for the next installment of this series!
Welcome to book 2 of the solar breeding agency series! I mean from the get go this is definitely my cup of tea and after reading this ARC I can definitely say I’m a huge fan of Zyros and Melody. There’s just something about big gruff aliens that go soft for their destined ones. It starts a bit bumpy but don’t let that get you down, author has incredible word building and in character depth.
