I was so excited to read this book. When I got it, I immediately switched around my TBR and moved a book over to next month because I didn't want to wait to start it. And once I did, physically could not put it down. It's so fast paced and easy to get lost in. And it's a fairly short book, only 239 pages, and I read over half yesterday before I had to be responsible and productive and pause my reading. So of course the first thing I do when I wake up today is finish my book! There's also MULTIPLE POV's in this story!!
The romance in this book is light (in the sense that it's setting up those relationships for future installments). But it doesn't even NEED any romance at all to be good! The writing, the world, the characters, even the plot, was also very simple and not hard at all to grasp, is what made the book so amazing. It's fun, it's interesting, it's refreshing. If you're sick of fantasy books that 400+ pages with heavy plots then PLEASE pick this up because it's so perfect WITHOUT all of that! You will absolutely love it!

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: First of all thank you so much to L.B. Divine for sending an e-ARC my way. Regardless of being sent an ARC copy of this novel that in no way alters or influences my review or my honest feelings.
So I am in between a 3.75 and a 4 star for this one, something just wasn’t connecting or clicking for me personally. I really loved the characters, I loved the story, I genuinely enjoyed the multi-POVs and the 3rd person styled writing. I will also state I am going to continue this series and I do want to see how this story evolves. Just something felt like it was missing for me and some of the areas I felt needed to be ironed out just a touch for my personal preference or built up a little bit more to really feel as impactful as I know they could be.
What didn’t work for me and a bit about why: - Sebastian's POV Chapter - Some of the character changes/developments felt rushed or a lot in all at once - Context and Diff Points In Time - Over clarification/repetitiveness at some points
Sebastian's POV I felt was something I felt didn’t overly bring much to the table. It gave context of an exchange that I personally could have inferred as a reader without the dedicated chapter.
Some of the characters seem to come to conclusions of romantic interest or destiny in a matter of a few conversations. I feel like that made bits feel less impactful and really rushed. I also thing some of the characters personalities changing very drastically with little build up was a bit hard for me, again it felt like there wasn’t a lot of build up to it.
I am all for context and different points in time and flashbacks. However, I feel like there could have been more use of flashbacks or referring to memories between the characters in dialogue or it could have given more than what I feel it gave, which was a lot of the feelings I already knew just re-solitified again.
This novel was written to be very clear to understand, at some points I struggled with reading because I would see the same thing referenced multiple times in the same paragraph or in the same sentence.
As I said, I really enjoyed this story. I do like the characters and I love the world created. I really enjoyed both Grace and Mishka for different reasons and see both as strong independent women. Grace needing to find her own identity and show she is truly kind and not what others may think of her, and Mishka needing to be the strong hand that protects herself, her heart, and her people. They mirror each other in a lot of ways Grace being heart and softness and Mishka being realism and sheer strength and resilience. I really loved the complexity of Rua, Blair, and Alren as well. Rua and Blair mirror each other in similar ways to Grace and Mishka where they both have the same hurt, the same heart, the same need to re-write their losses but in such different and complex ways. Arlen being someone who is soft but is often undermined also adds such a complex dynamic to the harnesses of the reality of the aftermath of war and struggling to survive. Finding love, hope, stability, and just a sense of healing after these truly traumatic events shapes others so differently. So I definitely want to go back to this series and continue this story. I just think that some things for me were just a bit hard to fully be all in with.
𝙒𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙄 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙: Yes. Despite having some critical remarks, I do love the bones of this story and I do think it is good. I love the characters and this story. I would recommend this novel to someone who wants a fantasy novel with a world that is easy to understand, beautiful characters, and is going to continue to grow. This story was easy to follow and the world was whimsical.
𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨: Yes. I would like to continue this series and I would like to get more from the novel and the story. I think this novel has some amazing bones and I really love so many aspects of this story. I think I just want a little more or some revisions to make this feel more complete for me. Even if that doesn’t happen I would want to continue this series.
I am genuinely unsure about how I feel about this book. Objectively, it's not bad. But it took me a while to get through and there were a couple times when I considered DNF-ing. But, I got this book as an ARC, and I hate DNF-ing ARC's.
Things I think were good: -The overall plot. It's a simple, but still very fun, plot. -The action scenes. -Certain characters, mainly Blair, Grace and Ruadhri. I think these characters were the most well developed.
Things that didn't really work, in my opinion. -Multiple povs. Specifically, there were a couple povs that only showed up once that I think could've been completely left out and it wouldn't have really impacted or changed the story. The multiple povs was kinda confusing in the beginning, but after about the 40% point, it became clearer how all the characters and their povs were intertwined. -The pacing. The beginning of the book felt extremely slow, and while it did establish the main characters fairly well, I felt like it didn't establish the world/magic very much. Then the ending felt really rushed, with multiple scenes that left me feeling very confused about the timeline of things. -Certain characters, mainly Mishka. I felt she was the least well developed MC.
This is one of very few books that I think would truly be better if it were a little longer, specifically in the last 1/3 of the book. I think that would have helped with pacing, so the ending wasn't so rushed and the timeline confusing. And I would have liked certain conversations between the MC's to be just a little longer and more fleshed out, just so the characters desires and goals were clearer.
I'm grateful to have received this book as an ARC from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I finished this book and stared at the last page for wayyyyy too long, thinking "wait... that can't be it...? can it?" and now I NEED MORE

Favorite Quotes: “Revenge will not heal the wound in your soul.”
“Destiny is cruel like this, giving some weights to those who do not wish to bear them.”
“His father had told him not to be frightened or ashamed of the killings, the violence, for this was a part of what the world was. Violence could be necessary. It could also be beautiful. [...] It can be beautiful as the strokes of your sword, for you are battling the elements as well as those around you. There is a rhythm to killing- to war.”
“Rua danced with his sword as if they were bonded, striking together in a harmony that not even the Gods could masterfully recreate.”
“Music used to do something to her, when she was a little girl, [...] something that would light from within her soul. She’d dance, feeling the music overtaking her soul and driving her to be like a wildling in the woods.”
This book scratched every fantasy romance itch I have. The world-building felt immersive without being overwhelming, and the political tension kept the stakes feeling real and urgent. The character dynamics were easily my favorite part. It was layered, emotionally charged, and full of moments that made me want to scream, kick my feet, and clutch the book to my chest.
The romance? Absolutely swoony. The slow burn was painfully perfect, with chemistry that simmered through every interaction. I especially loved how loyalty, identity, and sacrifice were explored through the characters’ choices. The emotional payoff was chef’s kiss and left me completely satisfied while still craving more time in this world.
This felt like the kind of fantasy that balances softness and sharp edges beautifully, tender moments mixed with betrayal, danger, and high-stakes decisions.
3.5 stars. This was hard for me to rate. This was an anticipated new release for me and I had a lot of high expectations. Unfortunately I was disappointed. I don’t want to be too harsh but I caught a ton of errors throughout the book so I don’t know if it was edited. The story itself was good but I felt like it was too short. I wish there was more backstory with the characters building up to the five year flash forward. I don’t feel the emotional connection despite the trauma all the characters were supposed to have. Plus, this is my first time reading about main characters being elves and I wasn’t expecting them to cuss. Kind of a turn off for me. But I still loved the story and will definitely continue reading the series when the other books eventually come out.
I’ve read one of L.B. Divine’s works before and really enjoyed it, so when I saw the promo for this one, I was genuinely excited.
Unfortunately, the blurb itself was confusing, and even after getting about 25% into the book, I still felt lost. The multiple POVs had potential to add depth, but instead they made the story harder to follow.
Eventually, I found myself skimming. Usually, even when I skim, I can push through and finish a book... but this time, not even that helped. I ended up DNF’ing it.
I loved being able to ARC read this book and had such a fun time with it!! The multi POV, banter, and furry familiars were definitely my favorites parts, but I also enjoyed dialogue that had me laughing out loud at times! I can’t wait to continue the story and see how things pan out bc the last line had me👀
5/5⭐️ I was originally going to rate this a 4.5/5 but that last page had my jaw dropped to the floor😭🫶🏻. All I have to say is that this was such a beautiful book with all the characters, story line, world building and I was loving every minute of it. Definitely recommend reading!🧝
LB is fantastic with providing beautifully crafted YA fantasy worlds with characters that are endearing. This was a fast read because it was a great time!
As my first LB Divine read, I can safely say I loove her writing style. I love how she can create such a complex fantasy world full of beautifully deep and flawed characters. I am so excited to see how they will pick themselves up and grow into their power in the next book in this series 😋
Liz creates worlds that are whimsical and full of adventure. They have a nostalgic feel to them that make it easy to dissappear into. I’ve really enjoyed her other series, and I was excited for this new journey. We get a large cast of characters and multiple POVs. I love a found family and seeing sweet friendships throughout these stories 🥹 With this being the first book in the series, we get glimpses of a magic system I'm very curious about & possible future relationships. I can’t wait to see where these go 😊 Thank you again for another arc opportunity 🫶 I’m really looking forward to continuing this story!
