A cursed family. A roguish wizard. One magical heirloom that could change everything. Octavia Thornwood wants nothing more than to run her cozy café and antique bookshop in peace. But peace is hard to come by when your last name is Thornwood—especially with a long-standing family curse, a tragic past, and a reputation for magic that makes the townsfolk both wary and in desperate need of your help.
Still, Octavia’s pastries are irresistible, her coffee brews stronger than most enchantments, and her quiet life is just the way she likes it until Caspian Shadowsflame arrives. Dashing. Brooding. Infuriating. The infamous wizard is in town hunting a cursed amulet—and Octavia somehow gets pulled into the search. She’s determined to stay guarded, but Caspian’s magic isn’t the only thing that’s disarming. As they unravel secrets, dodge magical mishaps, and get far too close for comfort, Octavia begins to wonder if some curses are meant to be broken… And some hearts meant to be risked.
Perfect for fans of Howl’s Moving Castle, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, and Practical Magic, this cozy cottagecore fantasy will enchant readers with magical mishaps, swoony slow-burn romance, and brews that just might heal a heart. Midnight Brews & Mystic Heirlooms is book four in The Enchanted woods Cottagecore Collection.
Magical heirlooms, a cursed family name, and a slow-burn romance wrapped in cottagecore charm.
Midnight Brews & Mystic Heirlooms is like stepping into a spellbound coffee shop where the pastries are warm, the tea is enchanted, and every antique might carry a curse. Alexis Vorpahl creates a comforting little world full of cozy magic, emotional healing, and a romance that simmers quietly but steadily.
Octavia Thornwood is a beautifully layered heroine — practical, guarded, and still nursing old wounds from both love and family history. Running her magical café-bookshop in a town that hasn’t fully forgiven her family makes her both endearing and lonely, and it’s hard not to root for her as she tries to protect the life she’s built.
Enter Caspian Shadows flame (yes, that name is as dramatic as he is), a roguish wizard with secrets of his own. His arrival throws Octavia’s world off balance in the best way, and their dynamic — cautious, banter-filled, and full of reluctant trust — is genuinely sweet. The romance unfolds gently, with plenty of cozy tension and emotionally honest moments. It’s the kind of slow-burn that feels earned.
The magical elements — especially the cursed heirlooms and family magic — are creative without being overly complicated, and the setting feels like a warm hug. It’s got a slight autumnal, folklore vibe that pairs well with the emotional undercurrents of grief, legacy, and forgiveness.
If I had one small critique, it’s that some plot beats felt a little expected. You can see where some twists are headed early on. But honestly, that predictability didn’t take away from the comfort of the read — sometimes a familiar path is exactly what you’re in the mood for.
Alexis Vorpahl’s contribution to the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore Collection is here! I was anxiously waiting for this book, as I have loved the entire series thus far, and wanted to read Alexis’ addition with Midnight Brews and Mystic Heirlooms. I have loved becoming lost in the cozy vibes each story brings. As we get to know our MCs and see how their lives intertwine, I fully enjoyed being in the world created by the author. Every detail is paid attention to.
Octavia is our FMC who comes with many layers. Watching these layers peel back made it a joy to get to know her. She runs a magical cafe and bookstore. Living in a town where her family has a past, it becomes known the town hasn’t forgiven her family fully, thus a layer of mystery is added as we learn the history there.
Then there is Caspian, our MMC wizard with secrets of his own. When he and Octavia meet the relationship begins off cautious, but sweet. Octavia is definitely thrown by his presence, but it is a way that you can’t help but root for! I loved watching these two become closer as the story progressed. In the midst of these two, magic also played an important factor in the story. Almost a character of its own, the magic throughout this book added depth to the storyline that propelled our MCs in their journey.
Alexis has truly written something special with this book. This book feels like a warm hug, one that you didn’t know you needed. I fully recommend this book! Although cozy and enchanting, the story provides a journey that had me under its spell until The End.
As always, review any author notes before reading.

Meet Octavia, our fabulous leading lady who juggles a magical café and bookstore while navigating her family's intriguing past. And then there's Caspian, our charming wizard with secrets of his own. Their initial cautious but sweet connection is simply a joy to witness! I loved watching their relationship blossom as the story unfolds, with magic playing a vital role throughout. It feels almost like a character in its own right, adding so much richness to their journey.
Alexis Vorpahl – you have truly crafted something extraordinary with this book! I wholeheartedly recommend this read, and I am confident that fellow book lovers will adore it just as much.
The world-building in this was amazing; so magical and fantastical. It’s incredibly easy to slip into this book and let real life fade away for a bit.
The story itself is very laid-back, cozy, and low-stakes, making it a perfect palate cleanser after a heavier read.
I did read an unfinished ARC copy, so there was a small storyline involving the son that felt a bit unnecessary or possibly incomplete. That said, the story still moved along at a nice, comfortable pace overall.
There’s a note at the end that this is only the first book set in this universe, and I’m definitely looking forward to more. It’s also part of the Enchanted Woods Cottagecore series, which totally fits the vibe. 🌲✨
A sentient house, a family curse, magic, witches and a mystical forest. What's not to love about all of that?
This book captivated me from the start. Octavia and Caspian have a fated love and the journey that they take is beautifully written. Full of gentle understanding, only after some wickedly biting animosity, an ongoing mystery to unravel and a curse to be broken. A family that loves and supports and some pretty amazing familiars.
If you love a good witchy mystery romance, this is for you. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Oh if I didn't work, eat or sleep I could have binged this delightful book in a day. This story of Caspian and Octavia is like watching a fine waltz. The rise and fall between these two will keep you in your toes. You don't know who to root for also with a house with magic mind of it's own try to also push these two together. Very slow burn but it lets you appreciate the story get to know these two and enjoy all the rise and fall it takes to get where they need!
This is the perfect cozy fantasy books with all of the sweetest feels. I loved all the characters in the story. Even though Octavia is very content in her life in comes Caspian who is about to stir up lots of feels and parts of life she has put on hold. I adored how each of them bring out feels and things they have both hidden from the world and tired to lock away. To save both of themselves from a curse they must work together to solve long hidden family secrets. The way this story slowly build and the growth of the characters is so natural and truly just so heartwarming.
This is a good read with some good character development. I like Octavia and the drama of her families curse. Caspian’s entrance is as dramatic as his personality, which pulls you through the story. This is a slow burn romance, which creates some tension and some great will-they, won’t-they scenes!
