This series continues to be a cute and more lighthearted series, even though it tries to include political intrigue and intense battles. I thought Iska's usual end-of-novel-battle was lackluster this go around, especially considering his foe. Some things get a little overused in this book - the descriptions of every woman's chest and saying the Sovereignty "is no monolith" about 10 times are examples. The "can't figure out feelings" trope is high between Alice and Iska, but that's part of the fun of the series. Not what I would call literary masterpieces, but I enjoy that these volumes are easy reads, and take them as they are with their standard ratio of awkward-romance with a bit of action and an interesting fantasy world.
Iska Is guarding princess Sisbell. Intrigue abounds as assassination plots come to the fore. Alice is annoyed that Sisbell has monopolized her "rival", Iska. What will the disunity in the Sovereignty mean for the world as a whole? I like the action, humor, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
Very fun read, and I laughed more than in any of the other volumes because of Alice's obliviousness to her own feelings and the humor in it, like the jabs at throwing Iska under the bus, etc. I really enjoyed the itneraction he had with Alice/Sisbell, and the tension with the enclave and three houses was interesting too. Battle against the Hydra red hair was okay though not super interesting, and there's some questions about the plot aspects like how Shuvalts could reach the capital so why not just go with him to get there safely with the guards, but eh, it's a fun series that I try not to read overly much into.
I think Jhin/Nene/Mismis didn't stand out compared to the previous volume but loved their interaction/jealousy with Sisbell and also how they reacted to her plus Sisbell is funny too like when she said she'd pay for everyone's meals but was the only one to buy anything herself.
Overall, I'm not sure which I prefer between this and volume 1. I think I really like volume 1's one on one time, but this one does humor better and still has enjoyable one on one time, so I think this might be my new fave volume in the series. Very funny and enjoyable overall, and I'm looking forward to more. (Binge read in a day, the day of release.)
