The Governess of Thornecrest Hall

Rate this book
She brought warmth to a cold estate and melted the heart of the man who never meant to feel again.

Desperate to save her family from ruin, Aurelia Whitfield accepts a governess position at the brooding Thornecrest estate. Two grieving children, a reclusive scholar, and a house steeped in sorrow, she's undeterred. But as she brings warmth back to the children's lives, Aurelia finds herself drawn to their awkward but brilliant uncle, Graham Davenport.

He prefers ancient ruins to emotional entanglements until Aurelia’s quick mind and quiet strength challenge everything he thought he wanted.

When priceless artifacts vanish and strangers lurk in the shadows, love and danger entwine. To secure their future, Aurelia and Graham must unearth more than secrets they must risk their hearts.

* If you historical romance love stories with unforgettable characters, a few heartaches along the way, and a sweet, satisfying ending, this one’s for you. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

a love-grown in antiquity

Aurelia comes to Thornecrest as a Governess to Thomas and Clara
Who have lost their parents and Viscont Graham is their own uncle.
The children are difficult but in time she gets to them and also Graham. Graham is doing a historical dig and totally absorbed in it.
Aurelia knows Latin and they share some nderstading about history.
They start getting close to each other which is a problem. Graham has a cousin who wants to kill hill to get the title and money which is caught. In the end Graham and AUrelia marry.

The theme of this was a bit over my head!

I generally enjoy Martha Barwood stories but this one was a bit over my head. The constant discussion of Roman antiquities was somewhat boring for me. It was quite frustrating in one scene when the main characters came to a high point in the story and were announced at a ball (which was eagerly anticipated by this reader) but suddenly the story cut to nefarious elements which I already do not enjoy as a part of the book! There may be many who enjoyed this unusual Historical Regency Romance Book, but I only just tolerated it.

Aurelia gets a post as governess for two orphaned children and the young boy, Thomas, is renown for quickly ridding himself of his governesses. As she deals with both the children and their grieving uncle, Graham, she helps them put their lives back in order. Meanwhile there is theft and a discontented cousin that is plotting a major disaster and when all is revealed he is overcome and Aurelia finds her hea with Graham. This is a clean read with two sweet heas

My major concern was with the title of Viscount. The MMC should not have become the viscount upon his brother’s death. The title belonged to the son of the deceased. That sort of error threw off my appreciation of the story. The FMC was an intelligent woman who without much experience with children did a good job of drawing them out of their grief. The romance was a very slow one. There was some intrigue due to artifacts being stolen.

After only a few chapters into this book, I felt it was nothing like I had read from this author before. It seemed slow and too descriptive of everything, but I kept reading. I am so glad I did. This book turns into a very sweet clean romance that I think you will thoroughly enjoy the story if you just keep turning the pages. There are villains, romances, kidnapping, theft and plotted murder. You will especially enjoy the epilogue and the extended epilogue

Obscure or formal vocabuary. ie "emendation" instead of "correction"
"ablative" instead of "leaving or coming from"
Laughs, love, humor, justice prevails.
Laughed often while reading this book. Characters were fun!

Enjoyable

I so liked this story! It was well written and the conversations were excellent! I enjoyed the dry humor and the pure English style (at least to us Americans)! Good read!

This book was very interesting.

The story was new and refreshing. Characters were well developed and dialog wax occasionally in the historical time frame. Sometimes I lost the plot and to reread portions of the book to find its direction. I enjoyed the writing.
