This may be a very short story at around thirty pages, but its emotional impact on me made it seem a lot longer. Jason and everything he has been through had my full attention from the beginning. At first it centered around trying to find out what exactly had happened to drive him away from a home he clearly still misses ten years later. Then, as the mystery around his past slowly unfolded, I was hooked wanting to know what would happen next. And as unlikely as some of it was, my inner romantic couldn’t but rejoice at the turn things took for him. After all the heartache, this turned out to be a great modern-day fairy tale.

The central theme of promises that need to be broken is intriguing, and without saying too much, so I don’t spoil the surprise and the delicious descriptions of the unfolding truth, what I can say is that I agree with Jason. In the end, some promises should never be made, and ones extracted under duress should not count. It shows how honorable Jason is that he does stick to what he promised, even though it hurts him deeply. As he discovers some of the truths he didn’t know about, and as others react to him having stayed away, his certainty grows—in line with my outrage at what had been done to him.

If you like your stories on the angsty and drama-filled side, if a sweet ending is a must for you, and if you’re looking for a read with a great setting, wonderful secondary characters, and a long-deserved and hard-earned happy ending, then you will probably enjoy this short story as much as I did.
