Taking on a high-profile case involving the murder of San Francisco's most beloved philanthropist, homicide lieutenant Jane Candiotti wonders if the case may be related to one involving a murdered homeless man.
Clyde Phillips is a prominent writer for television and film, he created Get Real and Parker Lewis Can't Lose for Fox and Suddenly Susan for NBC. He lives with his wife and daughter in California, and Martha's Vineyard, M.A.
Unlike the first two books in this series in Sacrifice you don't know who the killer is so it is more like a mystery than just a police procedural. The author is a TV writer and there are some scenes where you can actually imagine it playing out in front of you. Now they Jane and Kenny are married and she is his supervisor; I guess SFPD doesn't have nepotism rules; they spend a lot of time fighting about their professional vs. personal relationship.
Also the book is set in 2012 but it feels like it was pushed into the time from an earlier period. There is a comment about film canisters .... I don't know anyone who was still shooting film in 2012. Also there are several parts where they are 'over the mountain' so the radio can't get through - so why not use their cell phones? Even if there is a mountain in a populated area there would be cell phone towers.
This didn't really detract from the story it just made me think about it.
I thought the first 2 books in this series were amazing, and this is the best one yet. Unlike the first 2 where you knew the killer, this one is a mystery and I loved it. Honestly the killing of the homeless people reminded me of season 5 of The Wire and what’s not to like about that? I’m sad I only have one more in this series to read but so excited that the author is the guy who did Dexter seasons 1-4 and is doing the newest season. Can’t wait!
Can a saint have a tarnished background? After being assasinated at a tribute dinner for him, where he pledges 60 million dollars for a children's cancer wing at a hospital, things get complicated during the investigation. What is the connection with homeless males who are murdered? Add on trying to navigate police politics and you have yet another great read.
1. I love procedurals. 2. I like the human interest of a married couple sharing a profession. 3. Appreciate the intricacy of the solution. 4. Associate characters have development too.
09/24/16 I read this book so long ago, I didn't remember it. Since I recently read the first two books in the series, I thought I'd re-read it.
I remembered more of the story than I thought. That took away some of the tension in this story, but the tension in areas I didn't remember didn't seem as strong here as it was in the earlier books.
It was, like the earlier books in the series, a good story but nothing fabulous.
I'll probably read the next book in the series if it comes my way.
Great mystery from noted writer Clyde Phillips. There are lots of twists and turns as you unravel the puzzle along with San Francisco Homicide Inspector Jane Candiotti and her partner and husband, Kenny Marks. There's a lot going on to keep you turning pages. The most prominent San Franciscan is murdered and minutes later a homeless man is murdered. Meanwhile the two main characters are adjusting to the dynamic of their new relationship--that of a married couple working together. I love it when a book grabs you and makes you want to keep reading. This one does that. It's part of a continuing series by Clyde Phillips but it's stand alone. I haven't read the others in the series but now I'm hooked.
Although somewhat repetitive from previous books in this series with certain characters saving each other from near death, this is another good mystery by Clyde Phillips. There is plenty of action with just enough personal life.
Things aren't perfect in Phillips' books (How can the medical examiner supposedly tell who's blood it is and other evidence it is on a victim's body just by looking at it. Also a lieutenant telling a medical examiner what to do and he readily agrees without being irked at being told how to do his job), however they still hold my interest throughout. This one's ending was less of a surprise to me.
+ This is the 2nd Jane Candiotti novel I've read by this author and I enjoyed it just as much as the first one! I definitely plan on reading the others in this series. + Lots of twists and turns from start to finish made me want to keep reading. I couldn't put the book down! + I started to piece together parts of the mystery early on, but even so, there were still twists and turns that added unexpected elements to what I thought I had figured out.
A cute, easy, murder mystery. I didn't read the previous books in the series but it isn't a series you need to read consecutively. Published in 2003, there were certain dated yet whimsical references, like listening to a Walkman and blockbuster replacing a local grocery store for example. There aren't really enough characters introduced for many twists and surprises, but I still enjoyed and was entertained by it.
Jane and her husband are real as Kenny deal's with being subordinate to his wife while working a high profile case. I loved the twists and turns. You are likely to be surprised more than once. My only problem is the use of the same over worn theme of the brass interfering with her investigation as she barges ahead risking her position, ignoring the threats from higher up. Otherwise, this was a real page turner.
This time around, the main characters have become more real. They are dealing with a high-profile murder of a well-known philanthropist. The real problems of male-female relationships in a police department are magnified by the pressure of solving the case.
The characters have taken on more dimension in this one. Phillips does a good job with the cast of characters and with the story.
I was lucky to run across these books. Having visited San Francisco a number of times these books, in vivid detail, brought back many memories. I highly recommend these books. My only complaint is that I wound up staying up late cause I couldn't put the books down. Please write more of Jane and Kenny.
Jane and her partner, also her husband, take on a high profile murder investigation that appears to be the beginning of a serial killer's rage in the area. This case takes Jane and Kenny to the very edge of sanity, but how that happens, you'll have to read for yourselves. Thanks for another great read.
Very good detective story, murder/mystery. I have not read the previous three books in the series, just this one, and it stands well on its own. Good description of the city and the police work and women in power as the LT.
So glad I didnt give up on this series after Blindsided. “Sacrifice” was much improved with much better chemistry with all the characters involved, great action and a surprise ending that I did not see coming. This time I couldn’t put this one down.
The story might have been good but I could not breastfed narrator. No emotion cat all and strange pauses. Turned me off. I finally READ the book and it was not great but ok.
Still lots of deaths but not as overwhelming as the last book. Great action and the characters are growing into new roles. The secondary characters have become clearer and show groth and change as well. Great weekend read!
The more of this series that I read, the more I become addicted. I am quickly become I Nguyen a fan of Clyde Phillips. The characters are becoming so refined that their thoughts and feelings seem real. I also love that the outcome is far from predictable.
