It's so easy to write off a 60 year old history reader for kids because of antiquated facts or simplified, even mythologized history. But seriously: credit is due for the attempt to synthesize the inherited achievements of the .
This is a fun look at what American kids were taught in 1960, especially the recommended media sources! Just pulling up some of the referenced videos now on youtube is especially enjoyable.
Sure, rating this book based on today's standards of historical accuracy or avoiding Great Men history would be easy pickings; it would score an easy F. There is little mention of Aztecs, Polynesians, or South African civilizations. Nor is there coverage of the mass death of American Indian populations, or the brutal Triangle Trade. This was a simplified children's history, born of its time, and very Western European-centric. But as an artifact of its pedagogic age, it is very indicative and makes for good storytelling and --dare I say--it is a pleasant read.
Really good little history. If is a bit older, so the wording and facts may be outdated, but honestly it was just full of interesting information. It showed other sides of historical people I knew and reminded me of ones I'd forgotten and mentioned a few I didn't know. It's not an indepth look at history, more of a surface overview, but its a good start on world history to jump start deeper studies. I love how it didn't seem to favor one way of thinking or one country or culture over another. Just gives a summary of different historical events and eras. Also had nice illustrations and a good interactive guide with ideas to do yourself or with students. Surprisingly enjoyed this quite a lot. 😊
I can see how this book was given to soldiers that maybe were still working on their education and needing something to read in the long hours between duty stations. This was a very easy to read book that filled in a few gaps in my knowledge as well. The pen and ink illustrations reminded me of some of the books from my childhood. Some of the logic for how the book was divided was a bit confusing to me. It started out being chronologically based, but about 3/4 of the way through changed to being divided up geographically. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
I read and reread this book as a child, and it engendered in me a lifelong love of history. It is now dated and antiquated, but the storytelling can still captivate the imagination of boys and men who never grew up.
