Bodies fall like autumn leaves when you wear the Corbyn-Hale crown, and I’ve run out of white dresses to bleach.
After an attempt on my life, my dad ships me to St. Sebastian's at Cravenmoor Academy. With its Gothic arches, Latin oaths, and enough mafia heirs to staff a small army, he gifts me a Viper. Twenty-five, tattooed with sins, answering only to the highest bidder.
I hate cages, even the breathing kind. So I make my own rules.
Rule Control the heirs. Blake Locke wears a smile sharp enough to cut throats. Rafferty Warrick drifts past guards the way poison slips past lips—quiet and fatal.
Rule Keep Viper on a short leash. A man who kills without blinking shouldn’t make my pulse trip, but I’ve always loved venomous things.
Rule Survive the year. Assassins lurk in lecture halls, and someone keeps slipping toxin-soaked lilies onto my pillow. Each petal is a countdown.
If St. Sebs wants a queen, it will take my venom along with my blood, and when the final bell tolls, the men who circle me will I’m not the girl worth saving. I’m the empire worth burning the world down for.
This is a dark contemporary romance book 1 out of 3 in a brand new reverse harem romance by USA Today Bestselling Author, Eve Newton. You will come across TWs so please see inside for details.
Eve is a USA Today Bestselling Author with a specialty for steamy romance with strong female leads.
She lives in the UK, with her husband and five kids, so finding the time to write is short, but definitely sweet. Eve has a number of series, both completed and on the go and hopes to release some new and exciting projects, both paranormal and contemporary in the future, so stay tuned!
I got to 85% and found myself doing anything other than reading it. Facebook and tiktok were more appealing in doom scrolling.
Viper has a bad attitude problem and anyone who owns a snake knows that you don't feed it daily. Plus a 7 foot snake would be eating rats not a couple of mice.
Why would Viper cover her in bruise cream and then immediately put her in the shower? That's just one thing that makes no sense, there are more.
Why does she allow him to do any of the things he does in the shower to her when she's supposed to be this independent queen of baddass's?
I got bored really quickly with the dick measuring contests and with Viper watching then taking her to shower. Blake hammers on the door rips her leather pants off, she just lets him and oh look she's wet for him already! 😂 No need for foreplay then. I don't feel invested enough about any of the main characters to care about how this one ends. There wasn't enough build up of anything. Throughout it's just a list of what's going on and then right that's done on to the next within the chapter. No fall out on why half the students are in hospital with broken bones. A couple of kids make a few phone calls and families are suddenly bankrupt, out of business and out in the cold.
I actually loved this story - I’m a sucker for an Academy / Reverse Harem storyline and this definitely didn’t disappoint. I loved all of the characters - their strengths and flaws.
The only reason I didn’t rate it higher was for personal reasons.
I don’t even know where to begin with this mess of a book. I basically just finished it to get it over with but it was a struggle. Just way too insta everything… and a lot of the instant bonds just didn’t make sense. A lot of this book didn’t make sense so yeah. I won’t be continuing.
Plot: 4/5 • Smut: 2.5/5 ————> She wants to create an empire. She wants to take down all the sex/human trafficking. However, first she must stay alive long enough to do so. Sent to an academy filled with mafia heirs left and right she must survive with her “oh so fine” “body guard”. At the school we meet two more guys who rise to her. They worship her. They want to grow an empire for her and with her. We have two students and one “daddy” (😉😉). Attacks on her life start to happen midway through and continue until the very end. I love our FMC. She seems pretty bad ass and wants and needs no one, but at the same time loves the attention and promises she gets. The smut is good. We don’t get a scene with viper yet and that has me so built up, i could burst. The tension is palpable between those two. I want more. Can’t wait for book 2.
We start with a stiletto and end with a bang. This book, this story will suck you in and not let you go. The roller-coaster ride is unlike anything else. All I can really say without giving away spoilers? Just buckle up for a wild hot ride that ends way too soon.
This book is interesting but has room for improvement. The author tried too hard to be poetic and mysterious, they took a paragraph when it should be a sentence.
A big gap is the FMC. Apparently she is highly sought after but she's not a great fighter, she isn't richer than Midas, she's not a tech genius - there's nothing special about her other than her father.
I also don't get the "school" . You mean to say crime is just openly discussed, graduates are placed in prominent positions and no one questions it?
There is also almost nothing shared about the background of any of the characters. We hear one person is an assassin but nothing about the family or why they do what they do.
This is the type of book you read if you have nothing else in deck
Love the story, but I think the author left some story build out. I'm all so insta-love, but the relationships in this book were too instant. The author could have spent time forging their bond before all hell broke loose in the world.
3.5 stars. I can understand both the good and bad reviews.
At its core it's just another book about a badass mafia princess who is taking down human trafficking rings. An admirable goal for sure but I've read it a million times before at this point.
The plot is particularly unbelievable even for a mafia academy romance. None of the characters are particularly endearing. Just sleep with Blake there's literally no reason not to.
Like another reader, I stopped one night at 80% and then just.....left it for a month and a half. But I guess up until that point it was pretty entertaining in a light and fluffy sort of way. Probably a good read for an airplane or work trip where you don't need to think too hard about anything.
So… a little disappointed? This book started strong—action, tension, instant chemistry—I was hooked right away. But the deeper I got, the more it started to fall apart for me.
Pacing:
Inconsistencies:
Chemistry:
Overall? I’d give it 3 stars. The beginning had me excited, but the pacing and lack of development really dragged it down. Not terrible, just frustrating because it could have been so much better. Still curious enough to try book two and see if the pacing improves.
This is the BEST Mafia/g@ng/non paranormal academy book yet!! I was shaking in adrenaline and excitement the entire time I was reading this. This had all the action, spice and questions that I need answers for...like now. I am still on the edge of my seat about this book. If you like morally black MMCs and 1 fan-stinking-tastic baddie of an FMC than this is THE book for you! This is a MUST read, drop whatever you are doing and read this book. YOU won't be disappointed!
Venetia-She comes out swinging and goes stop. I loved how she dominated and took charge. Her vulnerable moments with a certain character was so perfect. It made me relate to her so well. Can't wait until we know more.
Viper- Going in I knew I was going to be obsessed but that was an understatement of the year. Eve made sure to make his character like a dr√g. Obsessed and addicted to his dominance from page one. Need him in my life, like now.
Rafferty- Oh he's a keeper!! Ruthless, bl00dthirsty and full of cinnamon sugar. I am so happy that he is the balance any good RH/WC needs. I look forward to seeing more of his heat.
Blake- Made him last because I know it would personally p|ss him off. I enjoyed his conniving and strategic character. He's a mystery though. So many layers that I would love to peel slowly, just to savor his being.
Highly recommend this book and author!! Check this masterpiece out!!!
Can I get a pocket sized Raff for my own collection please? No!! Well crackers okay fine. He can live in my head rent free as will this entire book. First and for most as always Eve knows just how to capture us in such a way that we couldn’t break free even if she provided the instructions.
Venetia- she looks like all the soft that women are meant to be but truthfully she is the hard core butt kicking Mafia Queen her dad never saw coming. She can handle her own, inside and out side of the academy! Venom- lord that man should come with caution tape and a warning label. But what he wouldn’t do for Venetia from the moment she made his control snap… Blake- our very own mystery with a level of layers even I’m not sure can unravel.. But oh it’s gonna be fun to see. And my sweet dark twisted Raff- he is the perfect balance of sugar and spice and all the bloodthirsty nice!! His spice is something that leaves you craving for more. And I can’t wait to see it unfold.
This is a DARK (heavy in the dark ) RH academy romance. That despite the cliffhanger leaves you imaging how many twist are to come. Can Venetia survive the assassinations or is she gonna kick their rear like the bad a$$ mafia queen that she is? What will her men do? What won’t they do?
Oh I can’t wait to find out. Please as always remember that while EVE is a queen at writing to captivate our minds, always check the trigger warnings. She would never want to harm the minds of her readers.
I'm not a mafia fan, but I do enjoy reverse harem and academy fic. I acknowledge this makes me maybe not predisposed to love the plot.
And there are some issues with it. The foursome comes together... because it's desirable for it to happen and not out of any real plot. Venetia uncovers something in her few days at the school that *someone* should have picked up on before her, especially since graduates of the school surely... go out into the world and talk.
Viper's inconsistent from start to finish, and I wanted something explicit to define him giving her the space to rule everywhere but in their relationship where he takes care of her so she can relax a little.
Bah.
The other two were fine, though their instant loyalty to her was eyeroll-inducing. Whether you can roll with it or not is going to be pretty individual. Oh, and the lack of foreplay, just fingers being shoved into her whenever? Especially after she'd been crying in the shower and had no reason to be simmering with arousal? Come on.
I'll probably pick up the next in the series, because I'm *just* curious enough to keep going.
The MMCs in this were hilariously pathetic. Honestly, all the characters were.
What was this? Gang leader turner bodyguard to the daughter of his competition? FMC that kills traffickers because her mom died of breast cancer? Kids without even fully developed frontal lobes playing at mob bosses that somehow defeat all other mob bosses? Literally, WHAT…
Complete, over the top, insta lust and love. The spice is also over in about .2 seconds. Dont even get me started on making the FMC say “daddy” about. 50 times..
Also, I would not consider this dark academia. It’s superficial. They go to like 2 classes. It’s honestly more like a high school. Everything is so excessive and overdone that it’s comical and cringe-worthy. This turned into a rage read. I just wanted finish and be done with it.
Would not recommend, personally, but other seem to enjoy according to reviews.
2 🌶️ (no RH intimacy in this book)

This initial book in the series presents a unique perspective compared to other mafia-themed books I have encountered. The storyline within this book is quite captivating. It provides a blend of engaging dialogue, thrilling action, emotional depth, and a touch of romance.
This narrative centers on Venetia, the heiress to a mafia family, who is enrolled in a school for her protection after an attempt on her life. She is assigned a bodyguard named Viper, the leader of the Southside, who agrees to assist her, harboring his own motivations while also being drawn to Venetia. At school, she encounters Blake Locke, a businessman with connections to the less reputable side of finance, and Rafferty, an assassin from a long line of assassins. Both men are interested in Venetia and are willing to support her until a discovery forces them to unite and confront a challenge.
Let me start off by saying I don’t typically write reviews for books. I just give a star rating and move on. However, this book definitely deserves a written review! I typically hate cliffhanger endings when the series is not complete but I am sitting here, hours later, still out of my mind about this story. The FMC is such a baddie that you never really know how she’s going to react to a situation. I love watching her, put these three men in their places whenever possible, but understanding that she also needs to rely on them a little bit too. Not to spoil - this RH hits a little differently than others.
I love that the FMC does not jump into bed immediately with all three MMC’s; she has a different relationship with each and seems to be going at a different pace based on their personalities. LOVE THAT.
Blimey!! ((She says as she picks her jaw up off of the floor after reading this book!)).
Mafia Princess - Venetia is dropped into St. Sebastian's after an attempt on her life. Only being there gave the chance to grow in strength and as a character I thought. More so with the introduction of Viper, Blake and Rafferty who not only lend their support but also bring on lots of heat. A brilliant start to this series with some cracking plot twists and one cheeky cliffhanger ending. Bring on book 2.
Ah yes I love Venetia (Venom) so much already and I love that the book starts with the POV of one of the guys. He (Viper) immediately knows this woman is different and is intrigued by her. He wants her and will do anything to make it so. He is obsessed and I'm here for it. I had a favorite book from this author and I am pretty sure this is now my favorite book. The writing is on point. The story great but it is dark so not for the faint of heart. I loved it to pieces and it's a re-read for sure.
What's not to love with this book. I have to say this is one of the best non-PNR academy books I've read in a long time.
Venetia is a take no prisoners badda$$, that inadvertently gets thrown together with Viper after an attempt on her life. Holy Wow do the sparks fly between them!
She's sent to St Seb's, with Viper as her shadow. She meets Blake and Rafferty and it's instant attraction.
The plot is well written, the spice is on point and the story sucks you in and pulls you along for the ride. I absolutely can't wait for the next book in the series!!!
Venetia- mafia princess who has just had the rug pulled out from underneath her by the mafia king himself, her dad. He sends her to Cravenmoor Academy, a training ground for the next generation of mafia heirs. She has to be protected though by none other than Viper Stone, a king in his own right. Let me tell you I loved me some Viper. Then comes Blake and Rafferty, two mafia heirs who turn Ventia's world around. You need to read this book, like now..why are you still reading my review?? Download it now!
Wow! Wow! WOW!!! I feel like I say this every review, but holy cow! This may be my favorite series yet!!! Dark Mafia vibes, with a bada$$ FMC who has an instant connection with Viper from the moment she locked eyes on him. Then, Venetia meets Blake and Rafferty and (imo) it was like a puzzle was put together. If you love a strong woman who can take care of herself and 3 men who would burn the world down for her and add in some intrigue. This is a must read!!!
I was hooked on this book from the first paragraph. This is my new favorite series. Venetia is one bada$$ FMC. She is no nonsense take no prisoners character. The three males that are her love interests are Viper the muscle, Blake the mastermind, and Rafferty the assassin. These men will burn the world down for her. I'm waiting on pins and needles for the next book!! You won't regret reading this book
Oh I absolutely loved this book!!! Seriously right from the start this story hooked me right in. Mafia book and I loved it! Venetia is my absolute favorites character. Loved her personality. Also omg let’s not forget Blake, Viper and Rafferty. These guys are will do anything for her. Love that in books. Tons of action with an outstanding storyline. I so need the next book. I was sad I finished book 1 so quick but it was phenomenal. Bring on book 2!!! Highly recommend!!!
This is a mafia slight dark romance. Venitia is a mafia princess that has been poking her nose where some don't want her. Viper the head of the South side gang is her shadow at St. Sebastians. This book has growth and focuses a lot on character development for the first half of the book but as we come towards the end we get to see a bigger plot and definitely makes you want more.
The first instalment in Eve Newton’s St. Sebastian’s at Cravenmoor Academy why choose series, Venom tells the tale of mafia princess Venetia and her court of knights Viper, Blake and Rafferty.
The characters are complex and the plot is easy to follow, though there are many twists and turns that keep the reader on the edge of their seat wondering what (or who) is coming next.
This was completely unrealistic from page one, but the author didn't come across as trying for that, so it really worked for me. Some of the repetition is getting old. Like the "she's a queen." All the other students are "pawns on a board." And the "mafia kids" acting like they're in charge but not. It is interesting enough for me to continue, though, so good job, Eve Newton.
Couldn’t put it down. Stayed up all night just to finish it, it was that gripping. And that cliffhanger?! Explosive! Venetian isn’t a pampered mafia princess, she is a queen who gets her hands dirty and likes it! With her court of Viper, Rafferty and Blake, she will rule this academy if it’s the last thing she does. Not even assassins can stop her. Well, so far anyway. Who knows what will happen in the next book. Oh, and I want my own Raff. Who wouldn’t want a chaotic assassin of their own?
I was hooked immediately on Venetia's story. She is a no holds barred FMC, and is incredibly strong. This is the first book in a new mafia, Academy, whychoose romance that had me on the edge of my seat. I am loving Vemon and Viper already and and very intrigued by the other guys. I cant wait to read the next book.
Venom is the first book in a new series by Eve Newton. Venetia is a mafia princess, who someone just tried to rake out. Her father sends her to Cravenmoor Academy with Viper as her protection. When she arrives she meets Blake and Raffety. They each have their own ideas and plans. Highly recommend reading.
