First loves. Broken hearts. Second chances.

Laney Thorton

I never thought I’d meet the love of my life at nineteen, but the second I saw Bowen Wright up on that stage, I was a goner. He was sweet, sexy, had a voice that could make you weak in the knees…and turned out to be nothing but a lying sack of—it doesn’t matter. I’d been ready to change my whole life to be with him until the day he broke my heart. Determined to forget that summer ever happened, I moved on with my life and never looked back…except that’s a lie, and despite how pathetic it is, Bowen still has a piece of my heart.

But when a deathbed confession from my mother changes everything I thought I knew about that awful day, I know I have to do the unthinkable and see him one last time…

Bowen Wright

I have everything I’ve ever a huge record deal, hit after hit on country radio, a sold-out stadium tour…but the one thing that would make my life truly complete is the one thing I can never have. I’d made damn sure of that when I’d shattered Laney’s heart fifteen years ago. I know she moved on and probably still curses my name, but it kills me that I’ll never get the chance to tell her the truth—until the night she shows up backstage, demanding answers.

Will the truth even matter after all these years? Can we possibly have a second chance at forever?

Or do broken hearts just stay broken forever?

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - KD does it gain ladies and gents. I ate this up over 2 days but in a span of 8 hours. I'm not a country lover but this has me ready to turn my husband into a cowboy.

🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 - I'd almost say this is equal parts smut and plot but it's a little more plot than that. This one is pretty vanilla but so well written you'll be blushing.

Arc review 🎉

Read the description of book and thought - no way will this book live up to that hype. Well I was wrong. KD definitely did that. The roller coaster of emotions I went on 💕 this book is proof that timing is everything and love always finds a way. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy and so wrecked at the same time. A MUST read!

Broken hearts and Second Chances. Throw in some small town, country aspects, and you get yourself a roller coaster of emotions. Bowen and Laney were super cute. Both are holding on to the past and a big mistake.

What they do to overcome that mistake moves the book along in a predictable, hallmark movie way. And that is where I, personally, was left unconnected. I knew just about everything that was going to happen a chapter before it did.

A good read for those who love contemporary romance with a lot of emotion and a storyline that will make Hallmark gold when it is made.

I loved this! The emotion that was expressed by the characters was incredible. Laney and Bowens story of a second chance romance, she wanted her mom to be proud of her and he wanted to be a country rockstar. Only for their relationship to get ripped apart by the hands of someone who was supposed to love you.
How do they find their way back to each other?
Only one way to know. Read and find out!

Incredible second chance story! -Spoilers!

I dove into this book and couldn't put it down! There were some spins on the typical second-chance story. First, instead of living in the "now" and getting the past via flashback, you'll spend about the first half of the book in their young love story, seeing it unfold. Then, you'll walk with them through their reconciliation and redemption in the second half.

The MCs are both likeable, and it's really a tragic tale how they end up separating. Yes, they were young and maybe Bowe didn't make the best decision, but as you work through the story you feel the goodness from him. I liked Laney as an FMC, and learning her history with her family, you can understand why she so quickly believed the lie.

I would have loved to see a bit more of their life and experiences from the time they split to the time they began to reconcile, but it probably would have made the book too long. They touch on it, her school and his career and the challenges, but would have loved to seen more. I'm one of those people that don't mind a 500+ page book, though! For most romance readers, it was probably the right length.

I loved how the author tied bits and pieces of the story to songs by a particular artist (Warren Zeiders) As a fan of his music, I loved those little Easter eggs found throughout. She does note them, so if you don't know his music, you'll at least know it's an "inside joke." There were a couple of the links that felt a little forced, but it was still a cool idea and not something I've seen often.

If you enjoy second-chance stories with a few spicy scenes, lots of angst, and letting your heart be broken before you patch it back together- this book is for you!

🤠 ARC Review of The Pieces You Kept✨
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I think I’ll remember you forever, Laney Thorton.”

🌾 Small town vibes
☀️ Summer romance
💘 First loves & second chances
🎤 Famous singer
🫠 Yearning (like, the GOOD kind)
🌶️ Spice level: 🌶️ (Light but quality)

This was my very first KD book and I fear I’m absolutely hooked now!! 😭 From the very first page, I was in. Like, cancel-all-my-plans, sit-in-one-spot-until-it’s-over in. I could NOT put it down. I got so emotionally attached to these characters especially Laney (top 3 FMCs for me, no question 🫣). She felt so real and relatable, and her journey seriously stuck with me. Also… Bowen. Freaking. Wright. 😍 A man who YEARNS??? SIGN. ME. UP. I loved the tension, the chemistry, the soft moments, just all of it!!

The writing style was so easy to fall into. The pacing was perfect, the emotions hit hard, and the little slices of small-town charm made me want to pack up and move to the farm myself. My only complaint is that I wish it were longer 😭 I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. Iwanted even more time with them (but to be fair, I’m also the type who lives for 500+ page books).

Spice-wise, it’s not super heavy, but when it does happen? It’s GREATT. If you’re in it purely for the smut, just know it leans light, but everything else makes it so, so worth it.

If you’re a fan of:
📖 Second-chance love
🪕 Country/small town romances
💞 Yearning and emotional depth
🥹 Crying in public (just me?)
This book needs to be on your TBR!!

1000% worth the read.

Oh man, this book really pulls at your heart strings, and I'm here for it!

The story starts with Laney meeting Bowen, an aspiring country music star at a bar gig one summer. The pair hit it off instantly, and from there, sparks fly. They both fall hard and fast. Their love is epic and perfect, the type everyone yearns for. It shows all the signs of lasting forever. Until it doesn't...

Fast forward 15 years later, and Laney gets the most heartbreaking deathbed confession from her mum. From here, our MC's story continues.

I love the insta love trope. It's a nice change from all the slow burn romances. And second chance romance's will always be one of my favourites. There's just something so special and sweet about them. I love the instant connection Laney had with Bowen's friends and sister. Her relationship with her mum was heartbreaking, as was the incident that led to why it became that way.
And how can we not love Bowen? Even after what he did. He's just a giant sweetheart who wants nothing but the best for Laney always.

This book was easy to read, and the story flowed well. I really felt all the emotions our MCs were going through, and there were a lot.

If this book hasn't been added to your TBR yet, I highly recommend adding it. You won't be disappointed.

I loved every minute of reading this book.

This is now my favorite book by this author. I absolutely loved Laney and Bowen’s story. The summer before Laney was to leave for college, Bowen and her had a beautiful time together and fell in love, until he messed up. Things aren’t always as they appear, so keep that in mind as you read this book. Fifteen years later, Laney is a surgeon and she’s returning to her mom’s bedside before she passes away. Mom has a confession and Laney is shocked, but doesn’t let her tell her everything. Bowen is now a country superstar and his sister, Kelly, is still touring with him. Laney decides to confront Bowen, at his concert. Kelly sees her and gets the guard to let her pass. Is this a major turning point in the book? All I’m going to say is keep reading, but you may want to have tissues close by. I loved this book so much, I ordered the paperback before I even finished reading the ebook. Grab your copy and see why this book is a must read.

I received and advanced reader copy of this book and this is my voluntary and honest review.

A beautifully written romance about first love, broken hearts and second chances.

Tropes:

- Country Singer/Songwriter
- Ivy League
- First love
- Heartbreak
- Second Chances
- Family Trauma
- Abs for Days / Sexy Cowboy 😉
- Spice 🌶️

Laney Thorton and Bowen Wright fell fast and fell hard and shared a summer to remember. A summer that ended in broken promises and heartbreak. But like they say, there's always that one person who you never really get over. There's always that first love that stays in the back of your head and you never really
forget them. Laney and Bowen never forget. Through the years, the country stardom, the success as a surgeon, the pain and love was still there.

Can they possibly have a second chance at forever?
Or do broken hearts just stay broken forever?

I could not put this book down. I love Laney and Bowens love story, I could feel their pain and joy as I read it. K.D. Miller does such a great job of intertwining the past with the present while telling their story. I am already looking forward to reading more of her novels.

Country? ✔️
Love story?✔️
Heart break?✔️
Family issues? ✔️
Rockstar romance? ✔️
Second chance at love? ✔️

It checked all the boxes and more. It went from Laney and Bowen being adults to back when they were 15, fell in love and then all hell broke loose. Laney and her mom had previously suffered a tremendous loss in which her mom never got over. Unfortunately the fallout was a shitty mother-daughter relationship but the way Laney treated it made me laugh out loud many times.
I get why Miranda Thornton wanted Laney to follow her dreams. I get why she thought that a boy would ruin those dreams. I get it. But wow she could have gone about it a completely different way. We live and learn and sometimes we get to make amends. Sometimes we don’t. The ones who do are lucky.

Did Laney become a doctor?
Did Bowe become a famous country music star?
Did Miranda get to patch things up with her daughter?
Did Laney and Bowen ever reconnect?

Only one way to find out. 😉 Happy reading!

Ah, you never forget your first love. Bowen and Laney meet & immediately sparks fly. They spend the summer falling for each other. He’s an aspiring musician, she’s aspiring to be a doctor. They’re on different paths but determined to make it work. Mom issues suck & in this instance her mom really really sucks. Laney goes to college & Bowen goes to make it big & they never speak again.

15 years later, Laney’s mom confesses (on her death bed) to what she did to make Bowen leave & you’d be floored. Laney sure is, & actually goes to confront Bowen (who is now a superstar country singer) …. Just being in the same room, seeing each other after all this time sets their emotions on fire & even after she leaves they can’t stop thinking about each other. Love the dual POV’s & flashbacks.

Is there only regrets & heartbreak for them? Will they find each other again? Read this if you love heartbreak, angst, longing & second chances, you’re going to love this!

Thank you K.D. Miller for my copy of The Pieces You Kept. 🤍 I received this book for review, all opinions are my own and given freely.

The Pieces You Kept is my first read from K.D. Miller and absolutely won’t be my last. Shout out to one of my book besties, Holly, for recommending this for me! I devoured this book and left no crumbs. From the first page, I was hooked.

This is a powerfully emotional small town, second chance romance w pleeeeenty of angst to go around yall. We love a country boy that yearns, am I right. The chemistry between Laney + Bowen was off the charts. The angst, tension and the swoony moments… everything just made such an incredible story. It is on the lighter side as far as smut goes. I love that the story was inspired by Warren Zeiders. I’m a huge fan of his music and the playlist to listen while reading is spot on.

The Pieces You Kept release 08/05.

4.25/5 stars

This book felt like the perfect Hallmark movie—wrapped in pages and filled with heart. I literally loved all of it. From the sweet romance to the small-town charm, The Pieces You Kept gave everything I was hoping for in a feel-good love story.

The structure of the book was also a standout: rather than jumping back and forth, Miller breaks the story into two clear parts—past and present—allowing the reader to experience everything chronologically, which made it feel even more immersive and emotionally satisfying.

And can we talk about all the Warren Zeiders references?! Yes please. It added such a fun, personal layer to the story that made it feel even more real.

Huge thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC of this story in return for my honest review. I’ll definitely be checking out more books by K.D. Miller—this one was a total win.

This is officially my favorite K.D. Miller book—Laney and Bowen’s story hit me right in the heart.

They fell in love one unforgettable summer—she was headed to med school, he was chasing a music dream. But just before she left, everything fell apart. Or so it seemed…

Fifteen years later, Laney returns home to her dying mother and learns a devastating secret about why Bowen really left. Now a country superstar, Bowen is the last person she expected to face again—but when they do, the sparks are undeniable.

Told in dual POV with flashbacks, this emotional second-chance romance is full of longing, heartbreak, and hope. Low spice, beautifully written, and packed with Southern charm—perfect for fans of Nicholas Sparks-style love stories.

I loved it so much!! Grab your tissues—and grab this book!

This book wrecked me in the best way. A small-town second chance romance with a dirty-talking country superstar, first love heartbreak, betrayal, Gilmore Girls-level mother/daughter drama, and SPICE that made me blush. 🔥

Laney and Bowen’s chemistry is off the charts, their pain is palpable, and the emotional twists? Gut-wrenching. I felt every beat of this story—K.D. Miller knows how to drag you through the angst and make you love every second of it.

If you love:
🎤 Rockstar (but country!) romance
💔 First love + heartbreak
🔁 Second chances
🏡 Small town drama
🔥 High heat, high emotion
…then this one needs to be on your TBR.

Bowe & Laney are adorable. I love their story, and I think you will too. Especially if you like country song type romances.

K.D. Miller did a good job with describing how hard it is when a parent dies and you have an estranged relationship. I loved how it reflected back to the first part of their story, and then continued to present day. I loved the playlist being included in the story, though it kind of reminded me of the fan-fiction I read back in the day when I was a teenager. Still loved the story though!

There was some spice but it wasn't overbearing and not focused on just mainly that. It added to their relationship and happened at the appropriate times.

If you want a good, emotional, country love story, this is the one for you!

Wow, such a special book
Loved the 2 time periods this covers and the fact that we get to experience that initial fall, this so so well written, I loved every minute. Some special parts and the bit at the farm where Laney says

“What did you do with them, huh? All the pieces of me you kept all these years? Because as much as I fucking hate it, you’ve had them all this time. You took them with you and I’ve never been able to get them back. Did you even notice? Did you even care??”

Will live in my heart forever, so strong and poignant and sums up how special this whole book is

KD has such a talent, taking you on the journey and making you so invested in the characters, her books never fail to wow me

Laney met sexy cowboy singer Bowen at a bar the summer before college. A decision by her mother changed the course of all of their lives. 15 years later some truths come to light…can Laney and Bowen find their way back to each other?

I really enjoyed this one! It was on the shorter side and the chapters flew by. I loved how the author did not jump back and forth between time periods because that can usually be confusing. I appreciate when it is everything from the past and then move back to the present.

The spice was fade to black for the first scene and then spicer towards the end. These two had great chemistry! I liked the mixing of song lyrics into the chapters as well. It was a nice touch. Overall, five star read! ⭐️

New to me author K.D Miller really brought the cuteness with this book. I live in a very small, very country town and country boys are just so I had a crush on Bowen immediately. Laney is witty and adorable even with her trauma. This book gives you small town, mother daughter drama, country singer (mmc), heartbreak and good vibes. If you're an avid smut reader this is very light on the scale but the story is so cute and precious you probably wont care. There is spice and its hottt but its slow burn and not frequent. I read 70% in one sitting and finished it the next day. The story flows nicely keeping you turning each page.

“I wish all the memories were bad. The fact that they’re some of the best I have only make it all hurt that much worse.”

Whether it’s heartache or the loss of friendships, I think that line can resonate with all of us. 💔

Within just a few pages this book had me fully immersed in the world of Laney and Bowe, and feeling every trial and ache right along with them!

There were swoon worthy moments and comments like, “When I die, ain’t no doubt I’m going to hell. Here, with you, that’s my heaven, Laney…” 😮‍💨

Bowen Wright is book boyfriend goals 🥹

This is my first of K.D.’s books, but I’m now adding all of them to my TBR!

Laney and Bowen’s story is about:

🤍 Second chances

🩶 Broken hearts

🖤 Young love

🤍 All consuming love

🩶 And unwavering passion

Bowen is an aspiring musician who eventually faces tough choices when it comes between his love of music and the girl he met.

Then when he least expects it, his hand becomes forced in making a decision.

Laney has always had her life planned out for her. Never questioning the path her life will take. That’s until she meets Bowen who wants nothing more to make it but playing music.

You can’t help but get caught up in Bowen and Laney’s love story and feel all the ups and downs with them! I love the way the way the story is written with the past first to really give you the back story and build the characters relationship. Sweet, Sexy, Swoon worthy Bowen and Fierce, Broken, Beautiful Laney come together in the best way. There’s love, heartbreak, and of course putting the pieces back together again. If you love a first loves second chance story this is for you! Laney and Bowen were so relatable. Easy flowing, perfectly paced, low spice writing that definitely has a southern small town-country-Hallmark-Nicholas Sparks feel to it. I enjoyed the sense of nostalgia in the beginning, the snap back to here and now with all the emotions and the references to country music. Grab your tissues and prepare to fall in love with Bowen and Laney's story!

4.5 ⭐️K.D Miller has done it again. I am not usually a Romance Girlie but this was Fantastic. This was my first Country Rockstar romance and it did not disappoint. The balance of plot and spice was perfect. The tension build up was superb (chef’s kiss). The banter was like Gilmore Girls level. The family drama was so realistic and the struggle of grief, anxiety, letting go and forgiving was great. Before reading this, I read an Abby Jimenez book and there is no comparison in my humble opinion. K.D is one of my favorite local North Carolina authors. Just read it and fall in love.

Oh, man. Poor Laney goes through it. In many aspects of her life. I liked that it was in two parts, so we not only got to see the second chance, but got to go through their beginning with them.

"So, credit where credit is due there: she made a lot of lives better. Just maybe not mine."

"I may have taken a long ass detour to get here, but he was always my destination."

Arc review: I absolutely adored this book! I’m new to reviews so I’ll try not to give too much away. Laney and Bowen are great characters and I love the way K.D. Miller told the story. Tropes include second chances, country singer romance, heartbreak and betrayal. The flashbacks to the past helped explain things without making it hard to follow. Plus all the song references? Loved them! I got sucked in and finished the book in two days because I couldn’t put it down!
