Award-winning author-illustrator, Joyce Wan, designed a greeting card when she was in first grade for a city-wide greeting card design contest. The design won first place and was subsequently sold through a major department store. Twenty years later, that design would inspire her to launch her own design studio called Wanart where she was creating greeting cards again. These greeting cards led her to children's book publishing after meeting an art director at a trade show. Her first book GREETINGS FROM KIWI AND PEAR was published in 2009. Since then she has published over 2 dozen books for children including the best-selling YOU ARE MY CUPCAKE. Her books have now sold a total of over one million copies worldwide.
Joyce is the recipient of the Mills-Tannenbaum Award for Children's Literacy from Reach Out and Read of Greater New York which recognizes children’s book authors dedicated to promoting a lifelong love of reading in young children.
Joyce is originally from Massachusetts and currently lives in New Jersey with her husband and daughter. She hopes to spread joy through all her work and inspire people to embrace the spirit of childhood and follow their dreams.
(Board Book) "Peek-A-Boo Zoo" by Joyce Wan (2015) is an easy-to-hold board book for babies and toddlers. The cover art is attractive with a large, yet friendly and cartoonish tiger with a sparkly purple background. Illustrations throughout this short book are equally inviting, with each animal asking, "Guess who?" The book is written in prose, with a flowing, rhyming cadence. After the reader asks "Guess who?", a flap reveals "Peek-a-boo!" and the name of the animal. Animals include a bear, monkey, lion, penguin, hippo, tiger and fox. Both the illustrations and words are repetitive, mimicing the game of Peek-a-boo often played with babies and toddlers. This book is perfect for the Pre-K bookshelf with its large illustrations, repetition, rhyming cadence, and fun peek-a-boo flaps. Parents can surprise their children with animated voices when each animal is revealed, and the game of peek-a-boo will be one that most children will already enjoy!
Peek-a-boo Zoo by Joyce Wan has been among the favorites of our children’s books since my oldest was a baby. Countless giggles and laughs have come from reading this! My youngest - now two - is dedicated to finding her bear, tiger, penguin, and more, squealing “Peek-a-boo” with each page. From the cute and sparkly cover, adorable animal friends on each page and the change for my little ones to interact with it, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite by each of the kids. Best age range is probably around 1-2 years old but my four year old still gets laughs from it!
Joyce Wan is the best! Someday I'll look forward to showing E the video Nina and me made of Charlotte and Eddie fanboying/girling over Joyce Wan. Uhhh, if that video still exists?
Anyway, super adorable pictures, and the peek-a-boo component is great for toddlers. My baby doesn't totally get peek-a-boo just yet, but he will! And he did manage to focus on the book a little as I was reading it him, so I'm taking that as a positive response!
