I loved being back in Oakwhite Bay. Celia and Hunter had a beautiful story to be told, and author Mimi Flood threw in a ton of mini-tropes. This book definitely hit many of the checkmarks for me.
It’s a reverse age gap where we get to join Celia on her journey through a divorce, basically becoming a single mom, and struggling to believe she can be with a younger man. Hunter makes her feel twenty years younger, but her brain keeps pulling her back to reality. Her struggle is real but it is mostly with herself. Hunter has loved her since he was a child, but while he has his own commitment issues, he is happy to have Celia in any way she’ll let him.
I’m not a huge lover of the slow-burn, but Mimi manages to give the reader what they are craving while still delivering plenty of sexual tension. Hunter was on a mission, and although he attempted to be true and stick it out, but I think he kind of blurred those lines.
Hunter is also dealing with massive guilt and grief, which hits hard. His struggle to come to terms with the death of his friend and their last days together brings both him and the reader to their knees in anguish.
While this book has many very poignant scenes, it is also filled with joy and love. Celia’s little girl Ella is as sweet as they come, and she brings a smile to the face of everyone she meets. While Celia comes to terms with her failed marriage, the betrayal by Robert, and tries to navigate what to do next, Ella is always at the forefront of her mind.
Hunter and Celia turn out to be perfect for each other, and taking their time to get to know each other solidifies their relationship. It is the backbone of this story, and the slow-burn is what actually made me want to turn page after page. To see how things played out each day. To see the little things that made them smile, until they finally both realized they had found their person and that age doesn’t matter.
In Too Deep also gives the reader a little bit more Spencer and Bethany from book one, Swept Away, as well as introduces us to the love/hate relationship between Maxine and Mitchell. Their book is up next, and it seems like it is going to be a doozy. Maxine is feisty, and Mitchell will definitely have a challenge in front of him if he plans on earning her trust and love back.
