The Story of Us: How the Taylor Swift Fandom Changed Our Lives

Rate this book
We’ve had the time of our lives as Swifties, and now that story—full of joy, friendship, connection, clowning, and singing at the top of our lungs—is documented in this tribute to the fandom and the reason we’re all here, Taylor Swift.

We all know how it a teenage girl from Pennsylvania moved to Nashville and soon rose to the top of the country music charts. This is where Taylor Swift’s story started in 2006, but it’s also where our story, as Swifties, began.

The Story of Us is a heartfelt journey through Swiftie history, capturing the evolution of a fandom that has stood the test of time. Told through the lens of personal experiences, this book chronicles the rise of a fandom that has remained fiercely loyal through every era. From calling radio stations to request “Tim McGraw,” to those unforgettable moments on Tumblr when Taylor and fans felt like friends, to surviving the Ticketmaster war—we’ve been there. We’ve learned life lessons, traded friendship bracelets, mastered time zone math to tune into live streams, and created a language only another Swiftie—or Taylor herself—could understand. But beyond all of these shared moments, what truly binds us is how Taylor’s lyrics feel like they were written just for us—like reflections of our own stories.

This passionate and unique fandom has won awards and been intensely studied, but for the first time, fans can reminisce and celebrate what it means to be part of this life-changing community. A love letter written by a Swiftie, for Swifties, The Story of Us ensures that our story will never be forgotten.

There are books you read, and then there are books that feel like they’ve been living inside you all along, The Story of Us is the latter.

Olivia Levin has done something really special here. From the very first page, you can feel that this isn’t just a story about a fandom. It’s a love letter to a community that has quietly (and sometimes loudly) shaped so many of our lives. As a lifelong Swiftie herself, Olivia captures the magic, the connection, and the deeply personal moments that come from loving something… and someone… so wholeheartedly.

What makes this book shine is its heart. It’s about more than music; it’s about finding your voice, your people, and your place in the world. Olivia beautifully highlights the kindness, creativity, and strength within this community, how something that started with Taylor has grown into friendships, careers, confidence, and a kind of empowerment that stays with you long after the last song ends.

There’s a sincerity to her writing that feels rare. You can tell this story mattered to her. And in telling it, she reminds all of us why it matters to us, too. It’s nostalgic, uplifting, and full of those little moments that feel like inside jokes between millions of people who somehow understand each other perfectly.

If you’ve ever stayed up until midnight for a release, found comfort in a lyric that felt written just for you, or made a friend because of a shared love for Taylor… this book will feel like home.

Olivia Levin didn’t just write a book, she captured a feeling. And honestly? It’s golden. ✨

As someone who has been a swiftie since like 2007, I thought I would enjoy this book a lot as I was able to look back at the things that happened over Taylor's career and the moments we shared. Unfortunately I didn't. I didn't really enjoy this book at all. I had tons of issues.

Some of the experiences the writer had herself with Taylor were interesting that were spread throughout the novel but I didn't understand the point of going through each album and being like "Red reminds us of fall". Like who is this book for? It's supposed to be for us fans but we know this stuff as swifties and think about it all the time. You're preaching to the choir. It's also frustrating how many times things were repeated. Like yes, we can connect to Taylor's lyrics no matter if we relate to them or not. That's why we're fans. You don't need to repeat that same sentiment like 50 times.

Like instead of talking about her secret session experience and then bringing it up again later to describe what they were, maybe she should've combined that together and discussed a bunch of experiences she'd gathered from her time online and from interviewing people. She did interview some fans and that was placed later in the book as just a bunch of quotes grouped together, but I think it should've been spread throughout and chronologically. The order of things happening in the book just doesn't make sense. That's just one example, but it happens other times as well. At the beginning she talks about Taylor responding to her on Tumblr but then there's this whole section about Taylor interacting with fans. Why not include it there? I don't get it.

One of the few parts I did appreciate was the list of inside jokes and the explanations. I would've preferred if they were actually discussed however instead of just writing them as lists and repeating the other same stuff over and over. It felt lazy. The parts with like journal entries was interesting as well but felt pretty out of place in my opinion because there was no actual concise order to how things were arranged in the book.

Bur anyway, thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for the ARC to honestly review.

I just finished this book after one long sitting (with Taylor playing in the background of course).

This was a beautiful book - an enchanted trip down memory lane and a poignant reminder of how whimsical and special our community truly is.

One of my favorite lines: “Part of the reason we’ve been rooting for Taylor since she was fifteen is because, deep down, we’ve also been rooting for ourselves.”

Her music has always made people feel seen, and I think her fans continue that lovely tradition. I am so grateful for being welcomed into the fandom and look forward to watching it grow and evolve for decades to come.

Also, don’t read chapter 12 without a box of tissues!

Long live! 🫶

Such a beautiful book, inside and out! Olivia’s heartfelt passion is instantly seen, felt, and completely contagious. From cover to cover, every detail and illustration is thoughtfully crafted, making this an especially unique read. It’s not just a book—it’s a love letter to the fandom.

Stunning work, Olivia! A must-read for all Swifties! ✨

Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for an early copy in exchange for my honest review.

I am a huge Taylor fan, really like the @swiftiesforeternity page, and was looking forward to this book, but it didn’t deliver.

For one, the overall structure of the book doesn’t make sense, leading to an unpleasant reading experience. Nothing is really in chronological order or any kind of narrative arc. Things are randomly mentioned for a paragraph or two multiple times throughout the book instead of just being written about where it makes sense. It jumps around so much, paragraph to paragraph that it’s not cohesive.

It’s very, very surface level. It basically reiterates “Taylor writes honestly, the fandom is so friendly, we love mother” over and over. I love Taylor and had a truly incredible time at the eras tour, and the descriptions in this book didn’t do anything to dive deeper or show why it’s actually special. It reads more like a school paper of “My Hero: Taylor Swift”.

I went in with high hopes, but unfortunately did not enjoy this book from the beginning. I kept reading in hopes that it would get better, but the book could have benefited from more organization and editing, as it just sporadically rambles and ultimately, doesn’t say much. I don’t really know who this book is for because it’s pretty boring for a fan, and I couldn’t see a semi-fan or non-fan reading the entire thing, and I think not knowing the audience was a hindrance.

As a Swiftie, I was excited when Olivia Levin (@swiftiesforeternity)announced she was coming out with “The Story of Us.” She helped so many Swifties out during The Eras Tour with selling/buying tickets and making sure they got to a Swiftie who deserved to go. She truly is the biggest Taylor Swift fan. This book was cute in the nostalgia of growing up listening to Taylor, seeing her different tours, and reminiscing The Eras Tour. However, I have to agree with many people that the book did not deliver to the hype.

The overall structure is not consistent with chronological order to any of the narrative. Constant back and forth between her first experience at the REP tour, to talking about the different Eras, then inside jokes of the Swiftie universe. It’s not cohesive, and many stories are repetitive that you start to skim through the book which was disappointing. It’s mostly Olivia’s love for TS and personal experiences. Whereas, I was hoping for more of an “history of Taylor,” random Taylor facts that us Swifties may or may not have known about, or a deep dive of clowning and breakdowns of how “thing number and this outfit means X, etc.” I will say that I didn’t know (Pages 117-118) that all the chants we learned for Eras Tour originally started in the original album tours. For example during “Delicate” we chant “1, 2, 3, let’s go bitch!” All goes back to the REP tour. So those fun facts were neat!

This was marketed as an all-encompassing fan-told history of the Taylor Swift fandom. What we got was a collection of essays and personal experiences that didn’t exactly live up to that marketing.

I absolutely adored hearing about Olivia’s Secret Session experience, and her experiences running her fan account @swiftiesforeternity. I mean, I have her post notifications on, she is truly my LinkedIn (Taylor’s Version). I love that she included other Swiftie online accounts, like our live stream queen Tess, our stats king Nick, and the one and only Swift Alert app! The glossary at the back was a perfect touch.
My personal con, I felt like I was truly reading someone’s unedited diary. There’s a part in the book where she discusses Taylor Lautner, Joey King, and Presley Cash coming out on stage at one of the Kanas City shows for the premiere of the “I Can See You” music video. She completely misses a sentence telling the reader Lautner also stars in the music video, only listing that he came out on stage and backflipped. It just feels like this should’ve been picked up on. I also just didn’t like the marketing it as a collective history of this fandom because a whole chapter is just explaining what the albums could make fans feel. We understand that her lyrics bought us all together, we didn’t need it to be brought up every other page.

I give this 3 stars, specifically because i listened to the audiobook while reading my physical copy. This is an EXTREMELY FUN book that I absolutely recommend for any Swiftie who wants to hold onto the memories. I did have FOMO reading about eating a chicken nugget in Taylor Swift’s house because I WANT TO EAT A CHICKEN NUGGET IN TAYLOR SWIFT’S HOUSE.

I’ll admit, I’m not exactly the target audience for a book centered on the world of Taylor Swift fandom—but that’s precisely what made The Story of Us such a pleasant surprise.

Olivia Levin has created something far more meaningful than a look at a fan base. This is a thoughtful and engaging exploration of connection, showing how music and shared experiences can shape people’s lives in lasting ways. Through personal stories and vivid moments, she brings to life a community that has grown and evolved over time.

Reading it from my perspective, what stood out most was how universal it all feels. While many of the details reflect a younger generation, the underlying themes of loyalty, identity, and friendship are timeless. Levin writes with sincerity and clarity, and there’s a genuine authenticity that carries throughout.

It’s an impressive debut that reflects both talent and heart. Whether you know the subject well or come to it as an outsider, this is a book that resonates.

A well-earned five stars.

Being a fan of Taylor Swift since I was little and growing up with her music has been so incredibly special. This book was amazing to read because it felt like I was connecting with so many others who have experienced the same memories and moments. Incredibly blessed to have grown up with Taylor Swift. I’m so excited to continue to share her songs with my children. This was a truly special book from beginning to end that shows how the fans have created many special moments and memories!

4.5 stars. As a Swiftie, I adored this! It brought me so much joy to journey through the TS Eras and relive the great effect they had on so many lives, and how they created the fandom that exists today. If you’re not a true Swiftie, you may not appreciate it as much as I did.

4.5! This was exactly what I needed right now! A quick, light hearted read about my girl Taylor and her many, many years of impact on everything. The best word to describe this book is nostalgia. From debut to tloasg, all of the tours, the re-recordings, the years of funny stories that get turned into memes, etc. It was just such a fun and reminiscent read. Highly recommend this one for any fans of the one and only - Taylor Swift. ok going to watch my eras tour videos now!!!

There are books that capture a moment, and then there are books that define it.

The Story of Us does something far rarer than either: it explains a cultural phenomenon from the inside out, with the clarity of a historian and the emotional truth of someone who lived it in real time.

At first glance, this is a book about Taylor Swift and her fans. But that description undersells what Olivia Levin has accomplished. What she has actually written is a chronicle of a modern social movement, one that did not operate through formal structures, but nonetheless behaved with the coherence, loyalty, and influence of something far more profound.

Levin introduces and develops the concept of the “paraasocial” relationship, a term that captures what millions instinctively felt but had never fully articulated. This was not a one-sided dynamic of celebrity and admirer. It was reciprocal. Responsive. Alive. The artist shaped the fans, and the fans, in turn, shaped the world around the artist—and, at times, the artist herself.

In Levin’s telling, the Swift fan community becomes something closer to a decentralized collective. At moments, it operates almost like a political body, capable of coordinated action, whether through boycotts, amplification, or cultural signaling. At other moments, it becomes something more intimate: a support system, a mirror, a shared emotional vocabulary that had real life expression in countless acts of kindness, charity and shaped their shared culture.

What makes The Story of Us exceptional is not just that it documents this, but that it explains why it mattered and how it came about. For those who are Swifties, or curious about what it really means to be one, the book is a delightful read.

Levin traces how fans didn’t simply consume Taylor Swift’s work; they internalized it. They adopted her resilience in the face of public scrutiny, her generosity toward strangers, her insistence on self-definition. They mirrored her charitable instincts, often quietly, often collectively, creating ripple effects that extended far beyond music.

This is the feedback loop Levin captures so well: influence did not travel in one direction. It moved outward from the artist and returned, amplified, through the community. The phrase “right back at you” is not just a sentiment—it becomes a structural truth of the entire ecosystem.

In that sense, Levin is doing something historians have always done at their best. Like Josephus chronicling Rome—not merely recording events, but explaining the forces, loyalties, and human motivations that made those events inevitable. Levin gives us the context, the psychology, and the connective tissue behind what might otherwise be dismissed as “fandom.”

And perhaps most importantly, she does so as both participant and observer.

That dual role gives the book its authority. This is not distant analysis, nor is it uncritical celebration. It is lived history, interpreted with care. Levin understands the emotional stakes because she has shared them—and she understands the broader implications because she has stepped back far enough to see the pattern.

The result is a work that resonates on multiple levels. For members of the Swift community, it feels like recognition, a validation of something deeply felt and often misunderstood. For readers outside that world, it offers a rare window into how modern identity, community, and influence actually function in a digital age.

“Long live” is a phrase that appears often in the Swift universe. But longevity does not come from repetition or nostalgia. It comes from story, accurately told, meaningfully interpreted, and powerfully shared.

The Story of Us ensures that this story will last.

Not just as memory, but as history.

I love Taylor Swift and have read a number of Swiftie-related books and magazines, so I was intrigued by this one written by a well-known member of the fanbase and published by a major publisher! The title alone is obviously a song reference, and there are plenty of other references to Taylor's songs and iconic moments sprinkled throughout in both the text and the illustrations. This book is organized more by themes (Taylor's online connections with fans, her various tours [the Eras Tour gets its own chapter], and an introduction of the author's personal journey as a fan, just to name a few) rather than chronological eras like most other Taylor books are.

Contrary to other reviewers, I found Levin's discussion of her personal experiences as a fan to be the strongest parts of this book. So much Swiftie media out there is clearly written by people who aren't really in the fandom trenches and/or are just interested in quick, broad overviews of Taylor topics. It was refreshing to read about Taylor's different tours from the perspective of someone who had actually attended them and about what actually happens at those exciting, mysterious Secret Sessions. I loved the excerpts from other fans featured in the last few chapters, too!

However, because of those personal anecdotes, I don't think this book functions well as being the all-encompassing history of the Swiftie fanbase it seems to want to be. There is no universal fan experience (in any fandom, I believe), yet this book uses a lot of sweeping language that suggests there is, and I could see how that might alienate some fans. Overly hyper and positive language is typical in the other Swiftie media I read, though, so I'm willing to look past it here. This is still a fun book with some fascinating sections, and in a sea of many books about Taylor Swift, I do think it stands out for being written by a dedicated fan rather than some corporate individuals looking to cash in on a trending popstar. I enjoyed it for what it was and would definitely consider adding this book to my Taylor collection!

Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for review! All opinions are my own.

I picked up The Story of Us: How the Taylor Swift Fandom Changed Our Lives expecting a fun nostalgia trip for fans, but what I got was something far more powerful: a beautifully written love letter to an entire community that has grown, evolved, and supported one another for two decades.

The book itself is also stunningly beautiful. From the elegant cover design to the thoughtful layout and little artistic touches inside that make it feel like a true collector’s item for any Swiftie. It’s a joy to hold and flip through.

The writing is nothing short of incredible. Her prose flows with such warmth, wit, and genuine emotion that it feels like sitting down with a close friend who’s recounting the best memories of your life. She captures the magic of Swiftie history. From the early days of calling radio stations to the bracelet-trading eras and beyond, with vivid detail and heartfelt insight. The passion she has for Taylor Swift and this fandom literally radiates off every page. You can feel how deeply this world has shaped her, and in turn, how it has shaped so many of us.

What surprised me most is that I’m not even a Taylor Swift fan. I went into this book as a complete outsider, and yet I couldn’t put it down. Olivia doesn’t just celebrate the music or the celebrity; she explores the friendships, the inside jokes, the wild theories, the joy, and the sense of belonging that the fandom has created.

Whether you’ve been a Swiftie since 2006 or you’re just curious about why this fandom feels so special, The Story of Us is a celebration worth experiencing. It reminded me that great books don’t just tell a story, they make you feel part of something bigger.

If you love Taylor even a little (or know someone who does), do yourself a favor and read this book. It’s pure joy from start to finish. Highly, highly recommended.

I truly don't get the many 1 star reviews. How can you be so negative about a book that's clearly been written with so much joy and passion? It's such a burst of positive energy and I love that.

But, of course, it's not perfect. Olivia Levin is not a "real writer" , she is a fan. And that's great. I just wish her editor would have been more strict and created some structure in this wild collection of anekdotes and memories. Because that's what this is: a collection of so many thoughts and "oh and this! and this! and this!!"

I would have much preferred it if the book had a clear beginning, middle and end. If it would show the growth of the fandom with each album, starting with TS Debut, ending with TLOAS. Like a real actual trip down memory lane, starting at the first memory, ending in the present, instead of going back and forth the whole time. That makes the whole thing look messy and confusing, which is a shame.

Also, I'm thinking that maybe it would have been better if the audio book studio had hired a professional narrator to record this. OL tried her best, but there is no emotion in her voice, it's all very monotonous, which makes her sound like a robot. And towards the end, when she's reading out fan letters, it's confusing because of the "I" structure which had me wondering whether she was talking about herself or someone else.

I'm rating it 3 stars because I love the fact that it's such a sweet passion project, but I can't rate it any higher than that because it didn't offer any new insights or deep dives, and sadly it really was all over the place.

The Story of Us by Olivia Levin felt like a deeply special and nostalgic read, especially for those of us who have grown up as Taylor Swift fans. More than just a book about music, it explores how being a swiftie can shape entire chapters of our lives, accompanying us through heartbreak, friendships, personal growth, and unforgettable moments that end up having their own soundtrack.
What I loved most was how Olivia Levin captures the uniquely powerful connection between Taylor and her fans, showing that her songs are not just listened to—they are lived. Every era, every album, and every lyric becomes part of our personal memories, making this book feel like an emotional journey shared by millions of people who have found comfort, identity, and strength in her music.
Reading it felt like revisiting different versions of myself through Taylor’s songs. It beautifully reflects on community, shared emotions, and how fandom can become an important part of who you are. It’s a heartfelt tribute to the experience of growing up alongside an artist who has consistently put feelings into words when we couldn’t ourselves.
Overall, The Story of Us is an emotional, relatable, and incredibly meaningful read for any swiftie. It’s the kind of book that makes you feel understood, seen, and proud to be part of something as powerful as loving Taylor Swift’s music.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I highly recommend it.

The Story of Us by Olivia Levin was a quick, nostalgic read about the unique fandom that is the "Swifties." As an OG 2006 Swiftie, I've grown up with Taylor. I've been there for every era, and it was great to revisit them through Olivia's eyes. Even though she's younger than me and relates to the music and Taylor herself in very different ways than I do or have, I appreciated her insights. The book felt at times a little disjointed, but that's a common issue with books of this nature. Each chapter reads almost like an individual essay, focusing on one specific element of the fandom or Taylor's career. Regardless, Olivia definitely has her finger on the pulse of the fandom and what drives us and connects us to Taylor.

As a thirty-something Swiftie who didn't get to go to any of the Eras tour shows, there were moments where I teared up reading because I wanted so badly to experience the camaraderie that Olivia describes, but that's a personal note and has nothing to do with the book itself.

Thank you so much to the publisher for the advance copy of The Story of Us.

The Story of Us: How the Taylor Swift Fandom Changed Our Lives is a heartfelt and nostalgic tribute to one of the most passionate fandoms in modern pop culture. Olivia Levin captures the emotional depth and shared experiences that define the Swiftie community.

What makes this book stand out is its focus on connection. It goes beyond fandom statistics or surface level commentary to highlight the real memories, emotions, and relationships built through shared love for Taylor Swift’s music.

The storytelling brings back iconic moments, from early fan eras to major cultural milestones showing how deeply intertwined the fandom has become with fans’ personal lives. It feels both personal and collective at the same time.

A warm, celebratory, and emotionally resonant read for anyone who has ever felt seen through music and community.

I was so excited to get an ARC of The Story of Us as someone who’s been a fan of Taylor Swift for over 15 years and has followed @swiftiesforeternity since the Eras Tour. Her love for the fandom really shines through.

I enjoyed the era breakdowns and the fan stories — it felt nostalgic in the best way, like reliving some truly elite pop culture moments. And the illustrations? So beautifully done and such a fun added touch.

My only hesitation was the structure! It jumps around a lot between eras and themes, and several points felt repeated, which made it feel scattered for most of the book.

Still it’s a sweet, heartfelt love letter to the fandom that longtime Swifties will appreciate.

An inside look at the impact Taylor Swift has on her fandom—and the fandom’s impact on her. From friendship bracelets to crashing websites to deeply parasocial connections, Swifties are known for their passion. But that passion exists because Taylor herself fuels it. From posting on Tumblr to leaving Easter eggs, she’s built a genuine, reciprocal relationship with her fans—fans who, like author Olivia Levin, would do just about anything for her. Whether it’s crying over her heartbreak, rallying during label disputes, or celebrating milestones like her relationship with Travis Kelce, we show up. And she meets us there—creating a space rooted in joy, love, and comfort. Olivia’s book beautifully captures the Swiftie universe and the connection that binds it together.

I’m not a Swiftie. I’ve enjoyed my time listening to Taylor Swift in the past and still listen to some songs now, but going into this novel have found it to be … bootlicking.

I always appreciate a non-fiction based on a topic I don’t have much experience with and was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. I expected more synopsis on the economical effects of the Swift fandom, genuine discussion surrounding the data driven effects of Swift’s music and reputation in the industry, something more studious than what felt like the author’s personal diary.

Personal experience is great primary sourcing for material. The flip-flop timeline, explanation of things through a fanfic-esque writing style is not it.

DNF around 35-40%.

Thank you to the Team at Simon & Schuster for an early ARC copy.

I enjoyed the hearing about the secret sessions, and the historic days, fan stories, and theories chapters, but most everything else missed the mark for me. I’m confused about who the audience is supposed to be. A lot of this was quite boring as a super fan, but I cannot imagine a casual fan or non-fan would get through this. Very surface level, more gushing than explaining. It’s truly insane it drop “5 holes in the fence” and mention the better than revenge lyric change and not actually explain them (she did include 5 holes in the fence in the back glossary but you don’t know that’s there when you’re reading straight through). Could be a high schooler’s essay. I’ll give it a whole extra star for how beautiful the book is though!

Such a great read!! I have been a Taylor fan since highschool! Tim McGraw is still one of my favorite songs. I was locked in from the first page about talking to Taylor on Tumblr and going to her RI house to meet her! Olivia describes everything in such detail that you truly can imagine yourself there. The way she describes Taylor as a person is brilliant. The best thing I found is that Olivia’s experience as a fan is unique and valuable. What better way to honor Taylor than to have one of her biggest fans share their amazing experience and love for her? The world is too much at times and to be able to pick up this book and escape into Olivia’s thoughts is the best medicine.

As a Swiftie, I was so excited to read this book. I thought it was going to be a book about the Taylor Swift fandom and what it’s like to be a Swiftie. Though parts of it were, it felt more like a book about the author’s different experiences as a Swifties from meeting her at secret sessions, and her concert experiences. I was hoping for a more cohesive story, and one that focused on Taylor and the Swiftie community over the author’s personal experiences.
