When social media influencer Brady Jones is asked to be a global travel ambassador, he’s thrilled. What could be better than traveling around the world for free? And it might just help heal his broken heart after breaking up with his fiancé, medical student, Hayes Crest, nine months ago.
None of his followers know about the break-up as he’s relied on a backlog of photos of the couple to keep up posting… only problem is, the travel company want both of them.
Hayes Crest has given up on Brady and social media altogether, turning his pain over the breakup into motivation for medical school. But school is expensive, so when Brady calls with the proposition that will pay his fees, he accepts - as long as they promise to keep their relationship platonic.
But after a hot summer travelling the major European cities, will this couple find their fake dating turning to real love?
“Love is a verb. You have to show the person you love them. Never take that for granted.”
A warmhearted road trip of fresh sights, new experiences, and second chances that was fun and spirited. 💛🩵 With a few bumps on the road and narrative, it was a nice detour from the scenery my reads usually take me on to spend the summer traveling to Europe’s hottest, sexiest cities while Brady and Hayes rediscover that what set them apart as a couple might be just what brings them back together.
It is a dual perspective that transitions at a decent pace between their first and only road trip during their senior year of college and the current one they have to fake-couple their way through as the Brady and Hayes: The For Us Couple of the Summer! Built on a lie, it quickly becomes the perfect opportunity to ease out the chinks in their dynamic for another chance.
“Feelings can be dangerous if you don’t handle them correctly.”
It may seem that my complaints outweigh my overall experience, but I did enjoy it. Brady and Hayes were both relatable in their own ways and somehow, inadvertently, hurt each other by their misguided secrets. 🥺 This impromptu trip gave them the chance of revising old assumptions for new possibilities, with a sense of ease, when it became clear that their longing and attraction was still very much alive and mutual, too. 🥰
It was nice seeing them recall the happy moments, and finally admit to their issues and hope to work out the problems from their “two different worlds" breakup a year ago. Brady, who loosens up Hayes from being more relaxed to be more whimsical and free, and Brady, who helps Brady realize his own potential he has to pave the path to his future following his dreams rather than that of his rich family of lawyers. ❤️🩹
Each city was inviting, rich with descriptive detail and lush imagery, and offered a change of pace that helped them slowly chip away at their inner faults and find new ways to make it work. The eventual fallout was inevitable, but I'm glad it was not prolonged. 👍🏻
“Well-earned wounds from a summer of adventure that I never thought would end like this.”
Otto was a buzzkill; his inclusion in their travels was not a welcome addition, even if his purpose was to entertain the idea of a possible threesome. 😣 That was unpleasant; I can understand his presence flaring the spark of jealousy, but he just felt so unnecessary. 🙄 Taking into account what I did learn towards the end, maybe there was some real motive behind it, but—yeah, still not fun. 🙅🏻♀️
The writing was good; however, at a few points, I felt some sentences were too short in depicting the actions. The phrases could have merged to allow a smoother flow. 🤷🏻♀️ Also, in certain instances, I felt the dialogue could have benefited from contractions. I know this is such a weird thing to be ticked off by, but—it just feels strange when characters say it all out, because then the delivery and tone somewhat take on a whole other meaning.
I liked how comfortable and playful they were with each other during their smexy times, their flirting and teasing were so in tune to each of their desires and pleasures. But the discussion of safe sex, let alone the foreplay that was very much needed, was missing. And even if they were deliciously turned on and hot and heavy, I wished they could've covered that bit of ground. Or I don't know, maybe that kind of pillow talk happens off-page now. 🤔
Even if the ending could've been a little more refined, I could not stop the cheesy smile that escaped me when Brady and Hayes had their final heart-to-heart. It was adorable. It was fitting. It was wholesome. ☺️ And it brought their summer and journey full circle in a corny way, but it was definitely for them. And I love the cover; the colorful vibrancy that celebrates love of glorious evenings skies with spectacular sunsets that speaks to the heart. 🌅
*Thank you to Edelweiss for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a sweet, easy read but it didn’t do it for me unfortunately. I didn’t connect with either of the characters and I didn’t really feel like either of them had chemistry. I wasn’t rooting for them and I was sadly quite bored throughout.
I liked the time jumps and the mystery of what went wrong but I was waiting for the big reveal only to be super disappointed. Their break up was solely due to Hayes’ insecurities which he completely took out on Brady and it was incredibly dramatic to break up over, in my opinion. It was made even worse by the fact that Hayes then kept information from Brady, what a hypocrite.
Probably a 2.5 starts if I’m being completely honest.
Here Comes Summer is a romance novel about two ex-boyfriends who have to fake still being together to go on a trip around Europe for a travel brand. Brady is aimless, with his rich family wanting him to follow in their footsteps and become a lawyer, but when he gets an offer from a travel company to be an ambassador for their brand for the summer thanks to an old social media account, he jumps at the chance. The catch? They want a couple, having seen Brady's posts with ex-boyfriend Hayes, who is now preparing for med school and worrying about money. This could be the perfect summer for both of them, but feelings might complicate their chance for easy money.
This is a great summer read if you're looking for queer romance, as it is light and the drama never feels too deep or troublesome for the couple. I like how it is told from both Brady and Hayes' perspectives, which makes the obvious miscommunication work better than it sometimes does (I find the trope is often frustrating when it is unrealistic and just there to create slight drama). There's definitely some interesting character development for them both, with the narrative focusing on them needing to take some inspiration from each other as they grow up, and realise that they might need to rethink some of their impressions to understand each other better. Each location they go to has a weather report that I think is meant to give a flavour of what is going to happen to their relationship there, but I didn't really feel like it was needed.
Here Comes Summer is an escapist romance that focuses on growing into who you want to be, whilst also touching on wealth differences and gay shame. It is on the lighter end of queer romance, but with characters that still feel like real queer people even in the very fictional situations.
Thank you Hera Books and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. A sweet second chance romance! A year ago things were great with Hayes and Brady but then it ended and both of them were left broken hearted. Now Brady gets the opportunity he has been looking for, a queer hotel chain wants to pay him to be an ambassador for them over the summer, take pictures, visit places all over Europe, it’s perfectly to show his parents that there can be other things besides law school. There’s only one catch they still think he’s in a relationship with Hayes so they actually want them as a couple. Hayes is working so that he can put himself through medical school and the money would really help him achieve that goal. He only has to take pictures of Brady anyway. Oh Brady may have left a little detail of the trip out. So they are fake dating, across beautiful locations, tourist attractions, and sharing a room. When you spend so much time with a person it’s hard for old feelings not to resurface. But their situations haven’t changed, could they really make it work? And are the little things they aren’t telling each other enough to destroy what they could be rebuilding? Charming, funny, and completely swoonworthy! Georgie Kain writes a fast paced second chance fake dating romance that had me hooked, in my feels, and cheering on Hayes and Brady!
I went into this hoping for a cute summer romance with some emotional depth and it's exactly at the second point that Here Comes Summer fell short. It's a quick read, and there's definitely some fun in it. But the storyline was way too superficial for me, the characters lacking depth and I just felt everything went too easily for them. A struggle? Solved in the next chapter. I had some hopes for this, but I'm afraid it felt a bit too young for me.
DNF @ 39%. I received a digital review copy of this book from Netgalley, but I could not get into the story. The characters were bland and very unlikable, the “miscommunication” felt very toxic to me, and I couldn’t drag myself back into the story. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity but I just couldn’t keep going with this one.
I loved traveling around Europe with Brady and Hayes. A fun, light-hearted romp that kept me turning pages. A great summer read. Will definetly read more. I could picture each and every place they went to because of the truly vivid descriptions.
