A stranger named Vincent emerges from a hole in the earth. He is a hellhound, bred and trained for one purpose: guarding the Underworld’s prisoners. At least, until he lets one escape.

Disgraced, he is sent to recover the fugitive, disguised as an ordinary college student. But the mortal world holds its own secrets. Mysterious murders plague the school. Supernatural creatures hide in plain sight. And the fugitive has his own plan–one that may spell doom for both Hell and earth.

To stop it, Vincent must team up with others like him that walk the line between light and shadow. The best of them is monster hunter and football star Henry Wellfellow. Kind and charismatic, he is beloved by all; and yet he takes an interest in Vincent, accepting him in a way no one has before.

But Vincent has demons–literally. He can’t fall for the hero of the story. He doesn’t belong in this new world he has come to love. And yet, he may be the only one who can stop its destruction. But will the mortal world–and Henry–forgive him for what he will have to do to save it?

First of all, thanks SO MUCH to the author for sending me an ARC for this book

Gah I can't even deal with the fact that I can't binge the next book immediately??

I miss Casey, Henry and Vincent already and I only finished like 1 minute ago.

Definitely a very good slowburn developing here along with some found family and monsters. Do people deserve second chances even if they made bad choices?

Very intrigued to see how this continues, i need it like, right now.

Thank you to the author for kindly giving me an ARC.

This was a really interesting fantasy story, with supernatural creatures, dynamic relationships, and lots of character growth. The world-building was great, fantasy and modern day were blended really well, and I liked the way the supernatural creatures were shown.

Vincent was a fantastic protagonist. Because he had been banished with lots of preconceived notions about humans, he was able to grow and develop a lot throughout the novel. I really liked how he started thinking for himself and making decisions on what he wanted to do, as opposed to what was expected from him. Henry was a really good balance to him in that way; he tried to always do what was right, actively going against what he was taught. It led to some really emotional moments between them.

As someone who doesn't like contemporary books, I did struggle getting through the initial few chapters of Vincent joining the university and getting invited to a party. I do appreciate it was necessary for the narrative set up, but once we got into the real supernatural elements I enjoyed it so much more.

There were a lot of twists that I didn't see coming. I really enjoyed those (being vague for non-spoiler reasons) and it made the book so fun for me.

Overall, a really great read and I'm excited to read the second book when it releases!

I read the prequel novella, The Double Crossing, and it was amazing! Loved it, and I can’t wait to read the full-length book. It sounds like a great premise and if it’s as well-written and compelling as the novella I’m sure I’ll really enjoy it.

** I’ll update this review when I get to read the full-length book!

The blurb of this book caught my interest when I first read it, and seeing how this is James's first book (at least I think it is?) I really wanted to give it a chance. First I'll start by saying I wouldn't necessarily classify this as a romance book. Is there romantic nuances there? Yes, absolutely. There is definitely some vibes between the two MC's, however, that isn't the main focus of the story. What is the main focus of the story is the mysterious m--ders that are happening on campus and following Vincent as he sets out to find the one who betrayed him.

Honestly I wasn't in love with this book in the beginning, and I'll tell you why in case you run into the same thing I did. The reason why I didn't enjoy reading this in the beginning is because there was SO much going, so much information getting thrown around, and all of these different events were happening quite quickly. I felt lost at times trying to decipher what was going on and how that was important to the story. HOWEVER, once I kept reading and the story progressed further I did end up enjoying this book quite a bit. When the plot thickened so to speak is when this book improved. I liked seeing Henry, Vincent and their 'crew' trying to solve the mystery behind what's going on. There were some humorous moments that occured here and there, and I thought certain paranormal aspects were quite unique as well. Seeing as this ends off with a HFN ending, I am curious to see where this storyline goes next.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It had a surprising number of twists and turns throughout the pages. The story leans more towards being romantic rather than a traditional romance, so readers expecting a full-on love story may be disappointed. This is not typically something I would read but being different 100% sets this book apart from other types of "love stories."

Vincent—a morally grey figure with a villainous edge—whose growth in the human world was a highlight of sorts and kept me engaged the entire time. The story features a slow burn dynamic, themes of found family, and monsters, while also raising moral questions about second chances.

If you're looking for something a bit different that is not heavy on romance, has a bit of a slow burn, and ends on a cliffhanger then this might just be up your alley.

Thank you to the author for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was such an interesting read, I was fully invested from the very first page.

Vincent was a fantastic character. I loved that his true form was a hellhound and that he shifted into a human. Watching him learn about the human world was both entertaining and endearing.

Henry, on the other hand, has a heart of pure gold. There were moments I was practically shouting at the book, begging him to let Vincent handle things his way, but honestly, Henry wouldn’t be the lovable character he is without his unwavering goodness.

The connection between them was a slow burn done right. You could feel the admiration building between them with every page. The mission they were on was intense, filled with thrilling fight scenes and constant clue hunting that kept me hooked.

I absolutely adored the entire story and can’t wait to see how things unfold in book two!

4.25 stars. I really appreciate these types of books where there are so many twists and turns that there is no way to figure out what will happen next. There were a variety of supernatural beings and a ghost, and a lot of exploration of morally grey areas between what can be shown as right or wrong. There is a hint of potential romance between sunshine monster hunter Henry and Vincent the hellhound, who is just starting to experience a real life for himself. All the characters had unlikable elements - which fit the story exactly. While this is clearly the start of a series, there is no painful cliffhanger.

I loved this book. I typically go for romance heavy, and this had the lightest romance undertone but read more like a paranormal thriller in some ways. I could not get enough. I loved the characters. Percy dug into my heart, and even with everything that happened, I love him so much. I need book 2. I need to know what comes next because this series is going to haunt me in the best way. This took turns I did not expect and there was action around every corner. I could not put this down.

Thank you to the author for giving me the chance to read the ARC! This review is of my own eager volition.

3.75 - rounded up to 4 stars!

Our Dark Mirror is a proper slow-burn in romance and a proper paranormal thriller, combined with a college coming-of-age story that proves you never really stop trying to find yourself. (It filled a void in my soul that the cancellation of Dead Boy Detectives made, and I'm so serious. It's that same kind of unabashed fun. Also Supernatural, but we'll get to that. It's got the shenanigans, the ridiculous banter, the kind of sillies with a paranormal/supernatural cast that can shatter in an instant. Classic!)

Vincent with his fall (upward) from grace is perhaps one of my favorite intros I've read in a while - you're given this bone-deep loyal creature and force him into humanity, the thing he both adores and despises. He's met with a radiant pocket-of-sunshine young man named Henry who is possibly both the best and worst thing to happen to him in that moment. Instant gratification in their immediately bizarre and endearing dynamic, while also getting to ask the big questions of "who's really in the right? Is it idealization or dehumanization to deal in these absolutes of good and evil?"

Henry is deeply flawed in this quote-unquote perfection, while Vincent has a massive bleeding heart that he can't possibly ignore, and I loved learning that about them both. But all in all, their relationship is so deeply earnest that it made my heart ache.

Vincent and Henry are both burdened with legacies they can seldom control, and have their lives wrenched apart any time they have sought to break out on their own, and I truly believe this is a fundamental part of why they find solace in each other. Queerness isn't just an objective in Our Dark Mirror, it's in the very bones of the story. Because who among us hasn't had their heart torn apart by a love of some form gone wrong? Who hasn't lost a friend, whether literally or metaphorically, and could no longer recognize them? And more importantly, whom among us has not found that they could discover themselves through the eyes of another - romantically, platonically, or otherwise?

As a true fan of ensemble-cast stories, I was delighted to see such a widespread cast that fleshed out the world of the story. The beginning does take a bit to get up and over the hill, which I had made note of, but the payoff as the story really takes off running makes it Worth The Time. There are some real solid Chekhov's guns set up on the walls of the earlier chapters that had me losing my damn mind. The horror elements of this story (transformations, fight scenes, plot reveals) are marvelous, unexpected, and exhilarating; Chance has a white-knuckled grip on the pulse of fear in a narrative where it counts the most, still beating and bloodied through every letter.

There were a couple scenes where I lost track of some of their motivations, as they blended in with one another. There were dynamics among the secondary cast that I do think needed more fleshing out to avoid certain character and trope pitfalls. This is where I bring in Supernatural, affectionately, because a massive series like that does have the hangup of having a million characters (including all the ones who die). The best parts of ODM (and Supernatural) in this regard were when they really made us care about their fates; they are still very young and this is a very unkind world, familiarly so. The threshold of adulthood is often just as unkind and Chance does not shy away from that. I truly believe Henry could benefit from getting to throw down with his father, much like my good friends Dean and Sam Winchester.

For the next installments, I'm hoping we get to spend more time with Casey in particular - an all-time knockout of a character for me. Amidst the chaos and being so uncertain of where to stand, she was a reckoning force without being flatlined.

I'm incredibly excited to see what James Chance has in store next, and I aim to be there for it.

!ARC Review Time!

This is an extreme gloomy & glacial sloooooooow burn. This book is part of a 3 book series with the main premise of the story focused around a murder mystery/ who dunit/ wtf is actually happening.

While there is definitely 2 main characters, there is also a who side show of found family supernaturals as well. All of who are very important to the story.

1 gloomy/emo Hellhound shifter, cast from the underworld to right the "wrong" he committed, 1 sunshine monster hunter/ football star who everyone seems to love, 1 witch... who is also not present.... just read to see, 1 ghost who has his own agenda, 1 werewolf who is roped into this whole thing & 1 popular girl with ulterior motives.

This book is a lot of gloom, when in the POV of Vincent. We get a lot of background on why he is on earth and who he is running down. He becomes intertwined with not only his love interest, but multiple enemies as well.

Just when you think you know who the bad guy is..... you don't. And another villain pops up. Honestly this book reminded me slightly of Hellboy in the sense that supernaturals have come together to stop the bad right? except everyone legit has their own agenda and they constantly push and pull for who is right vs doing whats right.

This book is very heavy in the world and plot building. Which means it does slightly drag on. For anyone who really loves the slow burn + pretty moderate to intense fighting scenes + plot twists.... this book is totally for you. If you are looking for fast and done.... this will not be your cup of tea.

I love the idea of this book and all the characters within. By far this book is gritty, dank in some aspects and is heavily dosed in Vincent's emo/ depressed temperament. It's a true grumpy X sunshine pairing if I ever saw one.

I'm very excited to see where this series goes, While I normally don't review for long kinds of drawn out stories... I will highly enjoy where this one goes. The gloomy feel got me okay lol and Vinnie is a depresso little puppy.

Reading Our Dark Mirror felt like being seen in a way I didn’t know I needed. It’s not just a story, it’s a quiet, powerful reckoning with the kinds of questions that sit deep in the bones. What makes someone good or bad? And who gets to decide what those words really mean? This book doesn’t try to give easy answers. Instead, it asks us to sit with the complexity, to look at the mess and beauty of people and still choose to care.

At the heart of it is the romance between Henry and Vincent. Henry, all sunshine and open-hearted warmth. Vincent, steady and shadowed, straight and narrow, now struggling with seeing beauty and softness for the first time. He's the kind of person who feels like nighttime in the best way. Their relationship is a slow burn that aches with honesty and restraint. It’s tender and devastating, and I found myself rooting for them long before they even touched.

Casey and Sierra are astounding, each one vivid and fully realized. The entire cast feels authentic and grounded, like people you could have grown up with, or maybe wish you had. The lore is rich without being overwhelming, and it gives the world a quiet depth that lingers after you close the book.

What I appreciated most is how Our Dark Mirror deals with darkness. It doesn’t ask the reader to pretend it's not there or to conquer it. It asks for something more real. To be brave. To look inward and keep looking, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Sure, it’s dark-coded, but not in a hollow way. It’s full of yearning. The kind that tugs at your chest. The kind that reminds you what it means to want to be known.

I’ll be waiting eagerly for the second book. Vincent, Henry, and Casey have completely captured my attention and heart.

I recommend Our Dark Mirror to anyone who has ever felt alone. These are the paranormal friends you wish you had growing up.

P.S. Don't be too afraid of the darkness, the author is cheeky and often breaks up the gloom with a well placed moment of levity that actually had me chuckling out loud.

A firecracker start to what is sure to be an epic trilogy.

Our Dark Mirror is not your typical male-male fantasy romance. The romance between protagonists Vincent and Henry is certainly the emotional core of the journey, but not the primary focus. Instead, a captivating supernatural mystery full of action and fear sets the stage for Henry and Vincent's budding relationship with twists and turns that transform and challenge the way they see themselves and each other.

You will see these characters love each other, fight each other, hate each other, and slowly become different as a result of the choices they make, and this is where author James Chance truly excels. His mastery over writing fantastical but believable dynamic characters is at a level of skill no author has the right to have for his debut novel. Pick up this book and I promise you will be invested in these characters highly emotional metamorphoses.

James Chance also has a masterful approach to slow world building which draws you into this unique urban fantasy setting without being overly inflated or unbelievable. As a long time fan of epic fantasy, this has the makings of a fun universe that I am excited to see expanded and explored further.

Finally, and this is personal, but the message in this book is a rare one. I wont spoil it, but I think this is a tale that will speak to some people that truly need this kind of story. In a world where the line between man and monster blurs more and more every day, this book has a nuanced take on the great questions that haunt people - what does it mean to be evil, what would you do to protect those you love, how do you accept your own nature, and so much more.

If any of what I have said intrigues you, I encourage you to pick it up. It is less than the price of your lunch, it may make you think and reflect, and there are two more books down the pipeline soon according to the author. Dive in, see the world through the eyes of the monsters you have in you.

Our Dark Mirror starts with a compelling premise: Vincent, a disgraced hellhound exiled to the human world, must retrieve an escaped prisoner while navigating college life, supernatural secrets, and unexpected connections—including one with golden boy and monster hunter Henry Wellfellow.

Unfortunately, the execution didn’t quite live up to the promise for me. The story unfolds very slowly, with key plot developments kicking in only after the 30% mark. While the world-building is rich and imaginative, at times it felt overextended, slowing down the pace rather than enhancing the tension or emotional stakes.

I went into this expecting at least a strong romantic subplot, especially given the hints of slow-burn between Vincent and Henry. But the romance is barely there—more of a suggestion than a true arc. There’s one kiss and little follow-up, which makes it hard to classify this as a romance at all. Combined with the YA-style tone of the characters and relationships, it didn’t quite hit the mark I was hoping for in terms of emotional payoff.

Thematically, the book touches on some darker and more mature elements, and there’s clear care in crafting a layered supernatural world. However, the ending felt quite open—not necessarily a cliffhanger, but many character arcs were left unresolved, leaving me unsure if a sequel is coming or if we’re meant to fill in the blanks ourselves.

If you enjoy slow-build supernatural stories with morally conflicted protagonists and a light touch of queerness, this might still work for you. But if you're looking for strong romance or tightly-paced storytelling, you may want to adjust expectations.

"“Does it hurt…?”

With you, it always does. “It’s okay…don’t worry about me.”"

The whole book I was yelling 'NOW KISS' in my head, holy mother of a slow burn! I gobble up tortured MMCs for breakfast, they are delicious. Their torment brings me so much pleasure, but what I never expected was to become the tormented one!

The ending had me floored. It physically hurt me to read. The twists and emotional inner thoughts of the characters were like ice picks to the heart. The worst part about it? I loved every minute of it and would relive it instantly if I could.

A look into the characters:

The women were spectacularly written, especially Casey. No one truly listened to her, or tried to understand what she was saying and instead painted her as a problem. This through kindling onto the fire of female rage, I felt myself backing her more and more, I was desperately waiting for her experiences to be validated and I really hope we get to see some powerful vengeance from her in book 2.

My baby boy Vincent. Oh the self deprication, the poor tortured soul. D I V I N E. you had my heart from the get go of this book, your sad boy energy fueled me. The ultimate book boyfriend, broken and beaten down, just how I like them. His character arc was excellently done, he grew in real time but he wasn't branded as a righteous hero. He still had his faults and slipped into old mentalities. Utterly flawed like a real human.

I am so excited for book 2! This was a scrumptious read.

4/4.5

I enjoyed this read very much. It was surprising. Something important to keep in mind is that it's "romantic" and not romance; don't jump in expecting to read 100% romance, because you might be disappointed. What you can expect is twists and turns in every chapter.

Fav character? Vincent, of course. My unconditional love for morally grey characters with a slight hint of villainy knows no bounds. I liked the fact that his character changes and grows while he spends more time in the human world.

The university setting? Enjoyable. It does the trick.

At times, there were quite a few characters, but they are very different from each other so there is no way you can mix them up. Maybe the duo Percy/Ava is the one is like a bit less (I will let the next reader be the judge of this). Henry is just too good to be true, I wanted to slap the goodness out of him, but well...

This is book 1, and it ends on a cliffhanger (of some type), and I'm looking forward to reading the next one. There are still things I need answers to.

I received an e-ARC from the author. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. This review is my own, and I'm leaving it voluntarily.

After being betrayed by a lying ass human Vincent has to rectify it. And joins a whole new world

I read the prequel (The Double Crossing) and was really excited for this one. I liked Anendotos. His questioning and vulnerability despite where he came from. But then Vincent became human real fast and I didn’t like him as much.

It was well written and the world built well. Though dialogue sometimes felt kinda immature/unnatural. Very few characters that I actually liked and sometimes I felt like we were having the same argument.
Especially when it came to Henry’s self righteous “goals” and Benjamin’s whole purpose.
Melanie and Jake were basically the same person.

I was definitely curious about how Vincent was gonna get the job done while saving himself. And I’m definitely interested in what happens next

Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity toARC read this novel

📚✨ Our Dark Mirror by James Chance
⭐️4/5 | 🌶️1/5

This one surprised me in the best way. It’s a gritty, slowburn fantasy with supernatural creatures, layered world-building, and an undercurrent of found family that hits just right. The blend of fantasy and modern-day elements felt seamless, and the supernatural beings weren’t just background—they were central, nuanced, and fully alive on the page.

The romance is a whisper, not a scream—so if you’re into low-spice, high-stakes emotional growth, this is it. It read like a paranormal thriller with a heartbeat, asking: Can people earn redemption, even after terrible choices?

I typically lean heavy into romance, but this had me hooked. The characters, the slow unravel of relationships, and the quiet moral tension kept me turning pages late into the night.

🩸Reading mood: gritty, introspective, morally gray, slowburn magic, found family with fangs

I received an ARC of this book but the review reflects my honest opinion.

I loved this book. It's a little spookier than my normal fare. Not by much, but I've been on a cozy only streak lately. It's a slow burn, much stronger on the paranormal elements than romance. The central character and relationship is between two guys. That said, there are prominent female characters who are complex, often difficult, but very compelling and well-crafted. I hope we see more of them in the sequel. I sincerely empathize with them to the point of tears a couple of times so we totally bonded.

The story itself is likewise very well- constructed. I couldn't put it down once I started. I loved experiencing humanity, for all its good and bad, through the eyes of someone new to it. And on a college campus to boot.

Overall, a 5- star book. I CANNOT wait for the sequel!

I enjoyed this read overall. The storyline is very interesting. I enjoyed getting to experience firsts with Vincent. For a creature that is often seen as evil in lore, he has an innocence and naivety about him that is so endearing. Henry just wants to prove himself, and that is very relatable. I look forward to seeing where the story goes in future!

A very slooooooow burn

This is a very intriguing story. We have a bunch of different types of creatures and a string of deaths happening on campus.

PNR thriller romance

The blurb drew me in, the writing kept me turning the pages.
This was intriguing with interesting creatures, lore, mysterious deaths, and a budding romance with the slowest of burns.
I definitely need book two because I'm desperate for more of Vincent and Henry plus I need to solve the mystery.

Remember all those amazing adventure/mystery books you read as a teen, but make it a gay! This is for everyone who wanted Merlin to end up with Arthur, or Harry with Draco, or Percy with Jason.
This book had all the best aspects of the books I loved as a teen/young adult. All the excitement and drama. The found family. The gang of teens teaming up to save the world and so much more.
We’ve got Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, Hellhounds, a Monster-Hunter, a sprinkle of Greek mythology, heaven & hell and so much more included.

Vincent is the dark & broody, morally grey character that I always want the MC to choose. The story being told from his POV gives us so much nuance into the mind of these anti-heroes that I always fall in love with in fiction.

Reading the prequel Novella The Double-Crossing is essential I think because it really sets the scene and the tone for this story. I felt it gave a good insight into Vincent’s motivations and the way he sees himself.

Almost the whole book was told in 3rd person from Vincent’s POV and we see him really start to find a place for himself in the human world and to grow to care for the people around him.
I loved all the characters evolutions in this story. To see Vincent finally want to have some joy for himself, to see Henry always try to do what is best and to see Casey lose a bit of her tough exterior and form a tentative bond with this gang that has adopted her (slightly against her will) into their fold.

It was an epic story of intrigue and excitement but underneath it all we get to watch Vincent and Henry slowly (oh so slowly) fall in love with each other. It’s the sweetest, softest connection and it barely catches a spark before we reach the end of the book but it lights a fire under Vincent for sure.

While I’m predominantly a romance reader these days, this took me back to the before times, when the action was so packed I didn’t need it but, underneath all the excitement I got to see Vincent & Henry building the sweetest connection. Which finally became something more right at the end of the book.

All in all a great story of secret plans, scary monsters but most of all people trying to muddle through and do what they think is best. A love story to the spirit of being kind to each other.

Oh yea and it was a debut novel! Blown my mind. Sensational

Our Dark Mirror is a wonderful debut novel that brings to mind college nostalgia and queer self-discovery. James Chance is a promising author with a knack for vivid description and slow burn-- unafraid to let his characters be flawed or complicated.

Is ODM a full-on romance? Not necessarily; it feels like a book that doesn't quite land in a singular genre. It's urban/paranormal fantasy to me, despite the clear attraction between the leads. I enjoyed the unfolding mystery, and the ways that the supernatural and mundane worlds intersected: small-town liberal arts school meets the powers of the underworld.

By far, my favorite aspect of this book is Vincent's point of view, as a monster and fish out of water discovering the human world for the first time. Under his jaded and suspicious exterior and justified hurt is the most tender heart, full of wonder for this new world. I enjoyed experiencing the familiar university setting through his eyes-- he feels like a love letter to anyone who has felt out of place in the world.

The core of the plot is a good old-fashioned mystery. At times, between outdoor stakeout shenanigans and mysterious murders, I was reminded (ever so fondly) of the CW's Riverdale or Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives. It was a page turner with heart, which kept me guessing to the very end, and had some shocking twists which never felt cheap.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, with significantly raised stakes. As a monster fan (and #1 Casey apologist), I'm eager to find out what happens next. Keep your eyes on James Chance, this was an excellent debut, a fun read, and a compelling new addition to any queer bookshelf. 🐺🏈🏞🦴
