Book 2 of 4: The demon’s attack at the betrothal spreads fear and doubt throughout the nations of Ki’hal. But Gen’s courage and sacrifice make him a legend and inspiration to the people. As the long, dangerous trip to Elde Luri Mora approaches, the Chalaine must battle her misgivings about the Ha’Ulrich and lean on her faithful Protector for the strength to do what she must to save the world.

As the journey across shards begins, her friendship with Gen deepens with every mile forward, but so does the danger. Intrigue and ruin threaten the caravan at every turn, but the most dangerous war of all is fought within the walls of the Chalaine’s heart.

Another great read!

I won't say it was as good as the first book but I still very much enjoyed it. I continued to love the characters. I can't help enjoying the hero Gen despite being the underdog. We learn so much more about him in this book and I won't spoil it for you but you'll love it. It only endeared me to him more.

Although the plot was not as action-packed as the previous book, it still held my attention. Through slowly building of characters and tension it became very much a page-turner. That's not to say there isn't some very satisfying action. It's simply not the focus of this book.

Again, I had the same problem with this book as I did with the last one. You turn the page expecting the next chapter and what you get is the end of the book. It's like 'oh hell no you didn't do this to me AGAIN!!!" I am beginning to see a trend here so I guess I can expect the same thing from book three. Well, at least all four books have been published and I don't have to wait to read them.

Definitely put this on your To-Read list!

A buddy read with the Fantasy Addicts at BB&B

This second part of the book is even better than the first! Tha two main ladies and the lady Elf are killing it in this series, so it is fun reading this book, as well as a pleasure!!! :):):) This is a non review, just a note, that since this is just a quarter of a full book, not a book in a series, I am planning on doing one review at the end of the fourth part:-)

Pure traditional Fantasy, written very well and engaging!!! If you are a Fantasy fan, you should soooooo read it!!!

Happy reading to all!!!

Loving this series! Although I will say this installment wasn't quite as good as the first - mostly because there is more traveling in this one. However, a lot still happens. A few highlights

- I think Mirelle is extremely well written! I want every good thing for her
- I love it when prophecy gets turned on its head. This series does that
- Subtle details from book 1 foreshadow events in this book brilliantly (for me, I didn't put the puzzle together until it was revealed and then looked back on book 1 and all kinds of odd things made so much sense)

Part two of this four part story done and dusted and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think most people liked this one less than the first, but I thought it was on par with it and could not fault it apart from the romance between some of the characters which I did not feel at all. The rest of the story gets a thumbs up though. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

PS: A shoutout to Mirelle and Maewen - loved them!

I read the e-book and listened to the audio by Simon Vance (he's perfect).

Decent fantasy told in 3rd person. Somewhat heartwarming, with a small but loyal group bonding into a team. I have some quibbles (some typos, some plot holes, and I'm not crazy about the love triangle, but it's handled with a fairly light touch — this series involves relationships but isn't really romance genre).

Our bardic warrior Gen gains in status but also learns some hard truths about his origins (why wasn't he more disturbed by that?). Half the book takes place during the dangerous trek to fulfill the prophecy to conduct the wedding rites at the holy grounds of Elde Luri Mora.

Fantastical elements include mages, demons, giants, elves, soul-eaters, horrible Orc-like constructs, etc.

This is one of the better fantasy series I've read so far. I feel involved with the characters and absorbed in the mythos. Sometimes it feels like a satire on organized religion, sacred scripts and prophecies, the Holy Mother of God Virgin Mary, but other times it feels like just the opposite.

But there are plenty of plot holes. Example: I didn't see any reason for

Contents: No explicit sex and fairly clean language, but some bloody scenes. Lots of upbeat scenes involving friendship and camaraderie offset the grim-dark parts. Some beloved characters die or suffer badly. However, I'm squeamish, and nothing bothered me. Dark parts happen fast.

A lot of interesting ideas. Exciting and well done.

There are four books in “The Trysmoon Saga” series. They are one long story. Be prepared to read them all. The four books in order are Ascension, Duty, Hunted, Sacrifice.

5 stars for Ascension. Exciting wonderful journey following Gen an orphan. The evil local magistrate bullies and harms Gen and others. Warlord Khairn comes to town killing many. Khairn forces Gen to learn to fight. There are magical creatures and healers in this world. It reminds me of Lord of the Rings with a little Harry Potter.

4 stars for books 2 and 3, Duty and Hunted. Still very good as they continue Gen’s story.

3 ½ stars - maybe 4 stars for the last book Sacrifice. There were sooo many battles and journeys. The main characters fight, flee and survive one obstacle, then an emergency happens and they are fighting something else. I was getting a little weary of battle after battle. But the overall story and how it ended was worthwhile. The evil god Mikkik was close to destroying all the good in the world. The epilogue was fun and very feel good.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
Simon Vance is excellent. And he does females well.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Swearing language: none. Sexual content: no details shown but a few occurrences are referred to after the fact. Setting: medieval time on another planet. Book copyright: 2014. Genre: fantasy.

Excellent continuation! This story is a nice twist on the whole "chosen one prophesy" troupe. What if the chosen one was a total dick? What if his evil antithesis was our only valiant hope?

All of my kudos from the first book continue to apply this one. Traditional epic fantasy done right!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Another of my re-reads.

This one was even better than the first. I can't really say much about the plot in order to refrain from spoiling it for anyone.

The characters gained more depth as the plot thickened. I love these characters! They all have distinct personalities and quirks. The dialogue between them is terrific. And I had indeed remembered correctly in my review of the first book about Mirelle's personality; she's become my favorite of the series. Chertanne on the other hand, is very deserving of a swift kick in his behind, at the least :)

Onward!

The book funnily enough speaks about the duty of protector and protectee.

So far, this saga has kept me glued to my kindle. I've barely slept because the story is so riveting. Spectacularly written, and full of twists and turns. My heart aches for the characters, and I'm so glad I had just enough money to get the next one. I just wish there were a hundred books in this series! It's been a long time since I've read a series as good as this one. The grammar nazi in me is very pleased too!

if you want to read a series that is "the author's poorly disguised fetish, this is the one for you.

-First love interest gets betrothed to another man who is a big dumb asshole, gets SA'd (heavily implied) by an entirely different man (unknown to the MC, as he was being tortured the entire time) and then killed. Honestly could've done without the SA but hey, whatever, it's building up the MC to be the man he'll become, right?

-The princess trope to the MC's farmboy trope is destined to be wedded and impregnated by another man who is the chosen one to birth not-Jesus. It is clear from the beginning that the author intended that the mc and Chelain are supposed to fall in love.

-The other love interest, the one he is very publicly courting. He starts off cold so she still tries to get with the dude she's been trying to court for years. when he warms up, she's still thinking about the other dude. when they're basically what you'd call boyfriend and girlfriend and publicly affectionate in a chaste society, she's still exchanging letters with that dude. Everyone goes on a big ol trip together. Does she try to use her free time to see him? No, she laughs and giggles and flirts with a random bard until the MC provokes her jealousy causing him to diffuse the situation with a love confession.

What happens next, you may ask? Well, the chosen one finally gets to wed and bed Chalaine, making him the king as they all wait for baby Jesus to be born. The MC has realized he's in love with Chalaine by this point and is like "yeah I'm going to let him fuck her for baby jesus' sake even if she'll be miserable" but also planned on killing the chosen one afterwards. The chosen one does exactly the thing that everyone knew would happen the moment he became king, which is to fuck with MC. So he makes the MC stand outside the door while he bangs. then he forces the handmaiden (who MC is engaged to) to marry and fuck the bard. MC loses the big battle because he's a pathetic cuck or whatever, even though he's basically got anti-christ powers and is supposed to be the best fighter in the world with the collective knowledge of multiple other best fighters/generals in history planted in his head.

when the MC has the opportunity to do something bold, tragic, and romantic (while also fulfilling his secret evil destiny) like killing the chosen one and dooming the future to evil and the next few books being about that...he just doesn't. could've been a good plot line about like, the literal antichrist becoming a faux-christlike figure and defying destiny in the name of love and righteousness but instead we just got him lamely losing a fight that occurs during a time when he's supposed to be in humanly strong.

also the chosen one is clearly an evil little gremlin and no one is like "hmm, something is wrong here"??? Dude is well known throughout all the lands for pissing himself and being a drunkard with 20 concubines and yet no one tries to stop him from becoming king and all that? really? not even the MC who has already shown he cares more about Chalaine's happiness and general morality than some stupid destiny? not the queen mother who previously vowed to never let destiny come before her daughters happiness again? or the various knights that also vowed the same? good fucking lord

Basically, everything is set up to torture every protagonist as much as possible. They don't stand up when they should. They fail to overcome every obvious trap and devious plot by the villains. The MC gets cucked 3x over. things just kinda happen to everyone and they say "wow this sucks" for the next hundred pages until another sucky thing happens. the mc learns he'll likely be killed after Chalaine is married and r*ped by the chosen one and instead is like "suddenly I'm religious enough to be ok with this and respect the nobility and social hierarchy I despised with a passion in book 1" and just makes half assed plans to hopefully save his friends from torment. His plan turned out to be "cast protection spells on my friends, then somehow defeat the king when I'm worn out from magic". Truly the plans of a master tactician with centuries of war and lore tucked away in his brain.

the only reason I gave it a 2 star is because the buildup to the end was decent and could've really been something, but it wasn't.

This picks up immediately after the previous one, including with the chapter numbers.
I should not have waited so long between books because it was a struggle for me to get back in.

There is a lot more information about the magic, particularly Trysmagic. I liked seeing how it differed from Duammagic and Mynmagic. Also, soul jumping sounds terrifying.
There is a lot more about Mikkik and the war against him and the foul creatures. He is absolutely terrifying.

The wedding of the Chalaine and Chertanne draws ever near, and Gen has to navigate being the Chalaine’s Protector, his romantic interest in Fenna, and the flirting of the Holy Mother. Mirelle is the most disturbing with how she flirts with Gen, comes onto him, and is just….gross given the difference in their ages. I really didn’t like the scenes with her when she behaved like that.
On the other hand, I enjoyed her joking around with Gen, Cadaen, and Jaron…though Cadaen is pushed aside more often than I’d like. And more than he’d like.

Gen learns he is the Ilch, something he and Ethris learn together. I like Ethris. I don’t remember him at all, but I like him in this book. Through him, Gen recalls some erased memories of his past, when a woman manipulated him and marked him as the prophecy foretold. Yet, he was saved by one of the Millim Eri, elf masters and servants of the Gods, and was able to somehow remold Gen to be one of the enemies of Mikkik instead of his instrument. Still, the possibilities of his future are nervewracking. I can see this story going two different ways, both of which would work for the story.

The songs being sung in taverns, especially the fact that there are new verses added each week, is hilarious. I love that the Chertanne learns how many people are mocking him.
It also causes his anger towards Gen to multiply. Like others, I believed early on that he was behind attempts on Gen’s life.

Gen’s jealousy over Kimdan’s advances towards Fenna–and later, those of another bard–were both cute and annoying. He doesn't even tell Fenna how we really feels until much later, which is frustrating. However, her jealousy over Gen speaking to Maewen in elven and going on random missions with her made more sense since she was a little more obvious about her feelings towards him.

Gen is somehow able to heal without the Chalaine willing it. The reason for this is quite sad.

Learning about the mother of Ethris, Dethris, and Kaimas was creepy. I felt confused when Kaimas was first discussing her though I trusted then that it would come into play later.
I don’t know why, but something about this middle part of the full story fell a smidge flat for me.

I hate Chertanne.
The last 2-3 chapters are intense and depressing. How are there still TWO more books?!

Duty indeed continues the story thread of the final chapters of Ascension, chronicling the journey of the Chalaine and her company to the wedding, and all of the dangers that they encounter en route.

The scope of the story narrows a bit, with most of the story's action taking place within a few weeks, but the tale benefits, as interpersonal relationships really open up in this installment, and characters like Chertanne, Mirelle, Padra Athan, and others become much more fleshed out. As before, Fuller keeps his world-building pretty narrow and unspecific, with his magics working in rather vague fashions - but I've always sort of preferred the latter approach (there's really no reason to bore readers with the gory details of one's system of magic). The limitations upon world-building keep certain aspects of the world - such as ancient history and the Uyumaak - mysteries with which to contend, and so I do not at all mind the approach in context here.

As someone with an appreciation for honest, innocent romance lines, I was pleasantly surprised with how wholesome and interesing the developments in this book were - though I found it somewhat ridiculous that apparently there is no woman in the caravan that doesn't go head-over-heels for Gen. I can, however, guess that I won't really like where the series ends up on the whole, being that it just doesn't seem bound for a good ending.

I was slightly disappointed at some of the behaviors at the conclusion of this part of the story, as well-developed characters don't really act in accordance with how they've been built up, and there are at least a couple of firmly deus ex machina moments that I found a bit frustrating. Overall, however, I felt that this was more enjoyable than the first installment (I would give this a solid 3.5 stars), and was better at keeping me hooked for the duration of the story.

Having finished half of this Saga, I am impressed. The characters on the whole are really good. A ton of time is given to each character interaction. To many times in books I find the characters will have a conversation that hits the bullet points. In Trysmoon they feel much more real. The progress naturally and end logically.

Gen has become one of my favorite heroes from Epic Fantasy. I know he could be considered too good but the story does a great job of explaining that. The only character I would complain about would be Ha’Ulrich. I feel like I don't understand his motivations. That is because he is held at a distance from the narrative. I think some time with him would flesh out the only weak side of this story.

What this book does to the mythology of the Prophecy is incredible. Like other great fiction it raises tough questions with no easy answers. If the rest of the series is as good as the first two then this will be one amazing story.

This seemed weaker than book one, but had a strong finish. I was disappointed that Torbrand Khairn was largely forgotten and when he did appear it was as a different character... almost benign.

It also seemed nonsensical that everyone, including the enemy, knew for centuries that the holy couple had to consummate their wedding at a specific place at a specific time and yet the good-guys made almost no preparations. Given the relaxed timeline, I would have expected a string of forts, within sight of each other, all the way to the destination.

It's the human interactions that drive this story. Mind you, things go way beyond love-triangle and into the love-web realm. I'm content to read on.

Estou bem curioso pra ver o rumo dessa história.

I was really hoping the second book would be better, but the story just keeps getting more annoying. Every time I feel like the plot starts developing, things just return to where they were. The story seems to repeat the same plot points over and over again. I'm calling it quits at about 30% of book two. I genuinely hate the series and regret every single minute I've wasted on it.

This book is a solid continuation, the Chalaine has a more active role so her POV chapters aren't as dull. But her character could still have been made more active and interesting than a walking good girl trope.
