A Soft Breath of Wind

A gift that has branded her for life

Zipporah is thirteen when the Spirit descends upon her, opening her eyes to a world beyond the physical goings-on of the villa outside Rome she has always called home. Within hours, she learns what serving the Lord can cost. Forever scarred after a vicious attack, she knows her call is to use this discernment to protect the Way. She knows she must serve the rest of her life at Tutelos, where the growing Roman church has congregated. She knows her lot is set.

Yet is it so wrong to wish that her master, the kind and handsome young Benjamin Visibullis, will eventually see her as something more than a sister in Christ?

Samuel Asinius, adoptive son of a wealthy Roman, has always called Benjamin brother. When their travels take them to Jerusalem for Passover, the last thing he expects is to cross paths with the woman who sold him into slavery as a child the mother he long ago purged from his heart. His sister, Dara, quickly catches Benjamin s eye, but Samuel suspects there is something dark at work.

When Dara, a fortune-teller seeking the will of a shadowy master determined to undermine the Way, comes into the path of Zipporah, a whirlwind descends upon them all.

Only the soft wind of the Spirit can heal their scars...with a love neither divination nor discernment could foresee.

Oh my goodness, y'all... I cannot recommend this book enough. It is one of the best books I've read this year. I had the chance to read it before its publishing date and the worst part was not being able to share it with others immediately.

Mrs. White is a masterful storyteller and has written a doozy of a novel. She has a knack for introducing impossible situations, then turning things around in a believable but still awe-inspiring fashion.

If you are looking for something to entertain, send you on a roller coaster of emotions, and renew your faith, this is the book for you. It drew me in completely and I fell in love with each of the many characters. They were so well developed and the story line was so amazing, I was drawn in from the first chapter and it wouldn't let me go until the end.

I was both encouraged and convicted by the spiritual truths presented here. Just go read it. You'll be glad you did. :)

This is a must read!!! I noted that one reviewer mentioned if Frank Peretti and Francine Rivers wrote a book together, this would be it. Perfect assessment!

Thoughts and Spoilers Below:

Plot: 4/5

Following the children from the first book, this book covers the establishment of the first church in Rome. The MC having the gift of discernment we see through her eyes spiritual battles between demons and angels, as well as the importance of prayer and dominion.

------

Writing: 5/5

No complaints.

------

World Building: 3/5

It did a good job delving into the spiritual world, but would've liked a little more depth.

------

Characters' Rating: 3.5/5

The characters were good in this book, none of them I was bored with. As with the first book, however, this story is not as focused on character growth but more on character relationships.

------

Overall Enjoyment: 4.5/5

A highly enjoyed this book. There was no lull period for me at any point, and it kept my attention the whole time. Unlike the first book, this book was much more tame on the physical issues of being a Christian. Instead, this book heavily focused on the spiritual side of things.

Some things I did not like:
-Spontaneous love
-Love triangles

I loved A Stray Drop of Blood for the same reason I now love A Soft Breath of Wind. The rich history. The hope-filled love story. The sweeping way Roseanna White fills a novel with faith.

Truth? I expected to not like A Soft Breath of Wind as much as I loved A Stray Drop of Blood. Sequels usually make me smile, but not as much as the first book. This one defied my expectations and made me love it more. Why? Zipporah. From the first page, she had my loyalty because she isn't beautiful but doesn't mind, she loves a man who doesn't love her back (a tragedy I'm unfamiliar with but nonetheless gains my sympathy), and she loves Jesus.

This novel, set just after the time of Jesus, is a time period I don't usually delve into (unless Roseanna's the author). She made it real with those little details that make time travel possible.

Zipporah's struggle is that she has the gift of discernment, and that gift constantly puts her life in danger. Where once her dream was to travel the world proclaiming the Gospel, instead she must stay inside if she is to stay safe. Meanwhile, the man she loves gets the chance to live her dream. When he comes home, however, he brings a threat no one could have seen coming.

I read this book in rapt awe at the way a story can grip your heart even when certain elements are not often explored or not easily understood. I thought Roseanna handled the spiritual themes of her latest release with great tact and grace. I highly recommend this book because it will take you back in time, introduce you to unforgettable characters, and remind you of the consequences--and blessings--of following the God we serve.

Read it, friends, and enjoy how the story doesn't quite leave you even after you've read the last page.

Those who have loved Roseanna M. White's other Biblical love stories, A Stray Drop of Blood and Jewel of Persia, won't be disappointed by her latest. It has the spiritual depth and rich Biblical history of her previous books, as well as a gutsy heroine and daring plot. Zipporah is one of my favorite of White's heroines. I admired her pureness of heart, and the way that trait mixed with her unique insecurities. The complexity of Zipporah's character and the surprising twist in the romance arc were what I loved most about the book.

Some readers may struggle with the way spiritual warfare is portrayed in the story, but I don't think you have to agree with every bit of the portrayal to enjoy the read.

I have loved all the book I have read by Roseanna White and this one is no exception.

Set during the Early Church when Pharisees seek to destroy Christians and the early church. Zipporah is given the Spiritual gift of being able to see the Spiritual world. She can see the angels that protect the church at Rome and she can see the demons that want to destroy it. She can see when people are possessed with them. She knows that serving the Lord comes with a sacrifice and she is willing to serve Him in this way. Knowing her place is in Rome and that she will not travel to see the world and spread the gospel. Yet she hopes that her Master and long time friend Benjamin might one day care for her more than just a sister of the Faith.

Samuel a Jew that was sold to a Roman as a small child by his mother, becomes the adoptive Son of a wealthy Roman and joint heir with Benjamin. After losing his wife and child he travels with Benjamin to visit other Churches and goes to visit Jerusalem for Passover. Now he has to face his past that he long ago thought he had but behind him. He finds out that he has younger half siblings. His sister Dara quickly become attached to Benjamin. Having been sold as a small child to a Master becomes possessed with a Demon and is also a fortune teller. She is now instructed to destroy the church at Rome.

Zipporah know right away that Dara is filled with a demon and this causes division in the Church right away. Some believe her spiritual gifts and some doubt. Will the Church at Rome be able to survive this attack? Will Zipporah and Benjamin be able to heal their friendship?

This is a story of faith, friendship, and sacrificing love. This book has some very dark places and ones where the Light of Christ shines through. This book is filled with Spiritual Warfare and a reminder that we don't fight flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (Eph 6:12)

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. A positive review was not required.

What a thought provoking book. I loved the glimpse into what the spirit world could look like. I’m not the type to look for a demon under every bush, but we do not give them enough credit for the things that happen I this world. How differently we would react to things with just a little spiritual sight. A great reminder to LIVE our faith. This book will live with me.

One thing I really hate about Roseanna White's books, especially the Biblical fictions. Coming to the end, that's what I hate. I want them to go on and on. So get writing, Writing Roseanna! I want the sequel to the sequel!

This book is a sequel to A Stray Drop of Blood, where we were introduced to some the heroes of A Soft Breath of Wind--Samuel, Benjamin, Abigail, and Titus. Two other essential characters emerge in Soft Breath--Dara, a selfish, conniving, evil young woman under the spell of an even more evil villain, and sweet Zipporah, a young woman with an extraordinary and miraculous gift of discernment.

At the age of thirteen, Zipporah (slave of Benjamin) is given this gift of the Spirit, and her eyes are opened to see the huge angels that guard her owner's walled villa outside of Rome, Tutelos. And hear the beautiful music that seemed to accompany them. But she can also see the demons that surrounding Tutelos, fighting heaven's angels for admittance. She can warn the other believers in this vast villa when to increase their prayers.

She's also in love with Benjamin, with all the extreme devotion someone so young can have. A devotion he shuns. In fact, he chooses Dara. The residents of Tutelos and Zipporah have prayed constantly to keep the demons at bay, and Benjamin brings this young woman into the compound, a young woman possessed by a demon bent on destruction of Tutelos and the families there.

Oh, my, how this Roseanna White can weave words! I would give this book ten stars if I could. You have got to, got to get this book. Available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

I've been an admirer of Roseanna White 's writing for years now. As I read her latest work, A Soft Breath of Wind, I was struck time and again to go back and re-read passages because I so greatly LOVED them. The author sets the scene in Biblical history with such clarity and emotion it pulls you in instantly. Walking through early Christian times through Zipporah's eyes, seeing history made, was mesmerizing. This is a love story in many ways, but more so between a young woman and her Savior. Zipporah learns that the gifts He gives are good, even the hard and challenging ones--all that is required of us is willingness and patience as we wait on Him to perfect them in His time. I'm pretty sure if Francine Rivers and Frank Peretti ever sat down to write a novel together, this would be the result. As far as Biblical fiction (or any fiction, really) this novel is one to take note of. In my humblest of opinions, this is Roseanna White's best work so far.

A very slight spoiler, so I don't feel the need to hide it.

Reality is that I loved this book, I wasn't prepared for the amount of sexual reference that was involved which means I can't give it five stars because I can't let my teens read it. However, it was still tastefully done despite very heavy topics and incredible characters. I also read it first, even though it is book 2. Book one is even more explicit, but I feel that for the topic it could be very therapeutic so I'd still say they're booth good reads.

It was very special to me that Roseanna is so aware of empathic gifts of different people and that she can relate them with Christianity but also see that some are not of God. In a world that dismisses spiritual gifts it is a pleasure to read about spiritual gifts that are similar to my own, and see them in the reality that some people believe I'm with Christ and others don't. There's something to the fact that whenever we stand out and stand up there will be opposition. We're among good company, for so was the life of Christ.

This is a book I plan to purchase in the physical form and add to my library. I will have an "adult" content warning for my children so they know they need to ask me if they're ready to read it. With homeschool they're pretty good about respecting my suggestion boundaries.

Incredible Novel!!!

This story is amazing. I love every second of this book. I appreciate so much when a Biblical novel enhances my Bible readings and understanding. This book did this in spades! I have always struggled with spiritual warfare. I believe it is happening, I just couldn't really wrap my mind around what exactly that could look like. Having read this novel, I feel like God has really illustrated what this looks like through Ms. White's imagination. It has really left me with a larger feeling of hope!

I love Zipporah. She is one of the best protagonists I have ever read. She is so strong, so brave, and so good...and, totally realistic. Her struggles really gripped my heart. She is definitely someone I would want as a friend.

I love this book. In many ways, I love it more than the first book. It does leave opening for a 3rd novel in the series, and I hope a 3rd book is in the near future. This book is well crafted, beautiful in its prose, and such a page turner. I highly recommend!!!

I loved this book so much. Most of all, I loved how you couldn't guess what the author has in mind and its an adventure actually reading it. I study the way many authors pencil their stories and it makes me mad how predictable the very next sentence can sometimes be. In A Soft Breath of Wind, Roseanna did an amazing job connected me with Zippy and other characters, at the same time surprising me with the outcome I was secretly hoping for, but knew it wouldn't actually happen. One thing I want to recommend authors to do is not give away all the main characters in the preview on the back of their books. It add mystery instead of a predictable waste of time that is so much like every other book on this planet.
Also, Roseanna's boldness with spirituality impresses me. I tried reading other books by her and just cant. They all fall short. I'm sad that Roseanna only has 2 books written in the ancient christian era. She is one of very very few authors that is talented in mastering an ancient story.

Wow, I wish I could give this one five stars, but I felt like there were just too many references to assaulted slaves and sexual tension. At some point I quit reading the parts with Dara, especially in the middle, everything with her was sexual.

I loved Zipporah and Samuel. Both of these characters strove to be what God called them to be. When an action was checked by the Holy Spirit they listened. Zipporah can see into the spirit world, the battles between demon and angel. She can see when someone with a demon comes to their compound and is able to keep that person out - until Dara comes. Benjamin refuses to listen to those he is closest to and refuses to see the wickedness in her.

I appreciated that the author gave us Christians who truly wanted to follow the Lord. Yes, some of them didn't make wise choices, but when they saw that they were wrong they didn't struggle to do the right thing, they did it! So many stories today glory in the flaws "Christians" exhibit, this one gloried in their righteousness. I just wish there had been less of an emphasis on the sexual in this story, it made it uncomfortable for me.

A very good read, no bad language.

So... Nina told me that this sequel was even better than the first book in the series. And as usual, she was absolutely right! I could not put it down and finished it in just one day.

While it is a stand-alone sequel, aspects of it definitely make more sense if you've read the first book, but the main character is no longer Abigail, but rather the next generation. Abigail still plays a major part though.

But where the focus of the first book was on finding Jesus, the focus here was definitely more on following him and thus didn't just make for excellent reading, but also had elements that were applicable to my own life (sort of like "The Yada-Yada Prayer Group" which I absolutely adore!). There were certain points where I worried Roseanna White would take the plot in a direction I didn't agree with, but fortunately that never actually happened, and I ended up finding one of the best books I've read all year :-)

I will be honest here. This could result in me screaming in all caps while I cry and laugh and sob and just .... probably go out and cast out demons. I didn't think that this book could top A Stray Drop of Blood. That was so good, so powerful, that I decided that there's probably no way a sequel could top it.

Well. I WAS WRONG.

Because this was everything I needed right now in my life. Everything God apparently knew I needed to read, because this was IT. And it was beautiful, it was powerful, it was written with God whispering in Roseanna's ear, there's no doubt about it. THE FAITH. THE EVERYTHING. It shows the preciousness of Jesus, how powerful his name is, how powerful we are when we wield it and live by it.

Just....READ IT. I highly recommend reading the first book, and then this one because it will matter more, but if God's leading you here, to this book, to these reviews, then go get it, and settle down for a soul-stirring treat.

I listened to the audiobook, and if it weren’t for that, I might have rated it a 5 star read—I didn’t love the narrators voice which might just be a personal preference but for me took the story down a notch.

But, the story itself was very intricate - it follows multiple characters and there is a lot going on throughout the book that kept me hooked enough to endure the not so great audiobook experience. The first part felt like it dragged a bit for me as the stage is getting set for the book, but once you got past that initial part, the rest of the book was very fast paced. I enjoyed seeing all of the character growth. It reminded me a lot of the mark of the lion series by Francine rivers. I wish I would have read the physical version of this vs audiobook to really have been able to enjoy it, but it was still a good read (listen) 😄

Amazing Biblically Based Fiction

I really enjoyed reading this book about what the early church went through. I was amazed at the GOOD vs. EVIL battle portrayed. Shades of Frank Peretti! It was very interesting to read about the struggles of the early church and its members. It was a thought provoking book. I definitely recommend this book and author although there are references to wordly things that may be difficult for some. Overall these references were treated with tact and compassion.

Loved this book. This is a very biblical and creative fiction. A good stand alone or second to the first book. No extremely graphic sex scenes like in the first which is another part that makes me love this one more. That also was a hinderance for me with reading the second but prepared me for what might come and what I might need to skip. I’ve read this authors books and never had that problem. This book on the other hand was way better without all of that.

Great story and characters

A clean, Christian historical romance with demons and angels visible to the protagonist who at times prays and speaks a command to demons in tongues. This is a continuance of a story started in A Stray Drop of Blood but can be read before reading the first book if you like. However, you will better understand and love the characters if you read the first book 1st! Many nice spiritual truths and a conversion or two. OK for tweens or older.

Ridiculous on so many levels.
Benjamen, who presumably has led a responsible like, all of the sudden ignores internal warnings, and friends warnings as well as obvious attempts to manipulate him. Jeez.

Then there are the miracles. Call down god from your fingertips and bring people back to life like defibrillator. Hmmm.

I do love christian stories, but this is too much.

It talks about a young girl's belief and firm resolve in what she sees and hears from God. A lot of twists but everything turned out great. Also shows the importance of praying as a body and believing each other, understanding and trusting in our spiritual gifts, allowing ourselves to be led by the spirit like Samuel and Zipporah.

Took me a while to get acquainted with the characters. But once I did I got into it. It's very comparable to Francine Rivers, "Mark of the Lion," series with a little "This Present Darkness" by Frank Peretti. I wish it was a series.
