Kate.

The daughter of Redcrest’s mayor, born into a world of privilege, influence, and expectation. Her life has always been one of manicured appearances—glittering events whispered rumors behind champagne glasses, and the quiet, crushing weight of legacy. To the world, she is the embodiment of beauty and poise—grace with a smile. But beneath the polished surface, Kate is unraveling.

Her brother has vanished without a trace. She is hiding grief behind curated smiles, suffocating under the pressure to be perfect, to hold the family name together as it begins to fracture.

Then, one night during a party and desperate to feel something, she wanders to the old playground in Bridgeview. There, she meets him—a stranger cloaked in mystery and quiet strength, a man with haunted eyes and presence that silences her racing thoughts. It’s reckless, dangerous, impossible. But for the first time in forever, it feels real.

James, aka The Butcher

He was born into blood. Molded by a legacy where murder was tradition and cruelty a rite of passage. To the outside world,

James is The Butcher and behind that mask is a man suffocating beneath the weight of his family’s sins. All James has ever known is obedience. Loyalty. Survival. Family. But family, in his world, is a cage.

Haunted by the ghosts of his past and the blood on his hands, James longs for something different. Something softer. Something that doesn’t end in screams. And when he sees her—light in human form, untouched by the shadows that cling to him—something in him shifts. For the first time, he wants to be more than a weapon. He wants to be a man.

But desire doesn’t erase the past. And monsters don’t get happy endings. Still… he wonders. Could she be the one to make him believe otherwise? And maybe—just maybe—he is the key to breaking free from the golden cage she was born into. Or perhaps he’s the spark that will burn it all down.

I never in a million years thought I would LOVE a Butcher, Boogeyman and Clown karaoke montage so much but, alas 🫠🥰

@Kristin Bosworth Author this series is sucking me in! This ongoing story, foreshadowing, the folklore, the whispers and tales that simmer just under the surface in this town is keeping me hooked. Kate's character in this book made me change my mind about her from the first book (Fixation) however; there were some things that got dropped early in the book i wish were revisted because I am not sure how I feel about everyones father's right now, and it wasnt talked about enough for me!

James....the butcher...with your big mushy heart. I had expectations for you in Fixation and you crushed those and threw them in your incinerator sir! not a bad thing! I just felt like I was getting whiplash! Kate needed a protector and I dont think you have quite convinced me you are the man for the job. Black Birds shoes seem pretty big to fill even from his distance 🙃

Lastly, I hope to see our card reader back in the next book!! That spiritual prophetic element added to this story is like getting a check in the mail you werent expecting 😍 always showing up at the perfect time with exactly what you need 🤏🤏
