This is a coming-of-age novel featuring Naruse Akari, an 8th grade junior high school student. In the summer of 2020, the story begins with her bizarre behavior of commuting every day to the Seibu Otsu store, which is about to close amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The protagonist of this novel is Naruse Akari, an 8th grade junior high school student with a unique way of thinking and acting that defies common sense. She begins the novel by commuting every day to the Seibu Otsu store, which is about to close amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to commuting to the Seibu Otsu store, she takes on the M-1 Grand Prix, conducts a long-term experiment with her hair, and memorizes and puts into practice the Citizen's Charter.

The highlight of this book is the purity and passion that underlies Naruse's actions. Naruse's seemingly outrageous actions are actually based on deep thought and strong will.

Naruse's actions then spread to the people around him. For example, Shimazaki, Naruse's childhood friend, was initially confused, but was gradually inspired by Naruse's power of action and inspired him to start something.

After reading this book, I was reminded of the potential and energy that young people have. Naruse's actions were born of free thinking that was not bound by existing values. After reading this book, I was convinced that her attitude had the potential to breathe new life into modern society, which is often bound by stereotypes.

A person like Naruse truly deserves to be the leader of Japan in the future. Her ability to take action, her creativity, and above all her ability to involve others are the elements of leadership that are needed in today's Japanese society! Such things are convincingly depicted throughout this book.

With a mixture of laughter and emotion, this work throws a wrench in modern society, and it remains in my heart for a long time to come.

- goodvibes, cara, goodvibes

A light, too light read, that has as its main character Akari Naruse, a girl that wants to live 200 years, become a manzai comedian, stands in front of the local TV cameras every day during the countdown to close the local store... You know, not your 'typical' high school girl (or person).

Mina Miyajima does a good in making Naruse (and the city, which is the other main character) interesting in the different short stories that make this volume, but there is no depth to the world (or very little). Afternoon read.

The best: the main character (and her friend) are fun to be with

The worst: it never becomes more than that

Alternatives: quirky Japanese characters? Miura Shion; light reads like this, made of short stories? Mikami En or Semikawa Natsuya

6/10

I hate this genre of books specific to Japanese literature with really sloppy character development where the main character is treated like a god from the beginning just because the author said so. Naruse is one of the most boring characters I’ve ever met. She’s almost a perfect recipe of a boring main character trope; confident, unapproachable straight A student who’s also a school athlete, good at everything, with no back story or interesting things to say. Somehow, every other character falls in love with Naruse. In case it isn’t obvious by this point, she never grows.

The main topic of this book is Naruse’s quirkiness, which is really just a laundry list of slightly unusual but perfectly predictable things she do. They all seem to be for shock value and nothing more. Even the afterwards starts with a passage about the importance of impact. The author is trying really hard to convince readers that the positive outcomes came from Naruse’s contribution and fails spectacularly. It seems to me like a result of dumb luck.

The story takes place in Shiga, a not-the-most-famous but interesting destination with history being right next to Kyoto and charming neighborhoods around Lake Biwa, with clear similarities to the Great Lakes. The book almost feels like Shiga’s propaganda to instill a positive image, and I can live with that. The local areas are well researched and depicted with unique details. I grew up in the same Kansai region, and still enjoyed and learned a lot. I just keep hoping that the book had nothing to do with Naruse. I simply don’t care about her.

In one chapter Naruse and others get on a boat called “Michigan” which is clearly taken from Lake Michigan but there’s no explanation of the backstory. The book sacrifices these interesting nuggets to uplift Naruse. It’s sad because it never works. Such missed opportunity.

I didn’t get a specific big impact from this book, but I like the way main character tries what she wants to do which is sometimes difficult if people too much care about what other people think about them.

I like the sentence 「

I promise try everything that I’m interested in: )

I read the first three short stories about a year ago and loved the first two but the third short story put me in a reading slump. I avoided this book until today but enjoyed the last three stories in one day. Naruse is one of a kind and very refreshing.
