Hard Timber Mountain Men #1

Mountain Man Wanted

Rate this book
I was built to survive the wilderness, not a woman wrapped up in sunshine who can see right through me.

They say silence is safe. That if you don’t let anyone in, you can’t lose anything. I believed that—right up until Joely Windom crashed into my world. She’s loud, relentless, and way too curious for her own good. A city girl with a notebook full of questions and a laugh that echoes through the pines. She’s supposed to be passing through, writing some article that has nothing to do with me. Except now it does.

Now she’s in my cabin. In my space. Under my skin. And every wall I’ve spent years building? She’s tearing down with that damn smile. I’m not used to wanting. But I want her. Bad. She thinks I’m just another closed-off mountain man with too many secrets. She’s not wrong. But the second she looked at me like I was worth unraveling, something cracked wide open.

Now I’ve had a taste—of her laugh, her fire, her mouth on mine—and the silence I used to live in doesn’t feel like safety anymore. It feels like losing her. I don’t chase things. I don’t beg. But for her? I’d burn the whole forest down if that’s what it takes to make her stay.

Six names. One blog post. And a town full of flannel, grudges, and emotionally unavailable men who just got called out.

They said these men were cold. Untouchable. Heartbreaks waiting to happen. Now their names are plastered all over The Ex List—a brutal anonymous post that’s got the whole town talking… and the women of Hard Timber watching. The list was meant as a warning. Instead, it’s daring these men to prove everyone wrong. Now the most untouchable bachelors in Hard Timber are under pressure—and under the spotlight.

Some want redemption. Some want revenge. And some just want the woman standing in their way. Because once a mountain man decides he’s all in…There’s no going back. No holding back. And no one else will ever compare.

MOUNTAIN MAN WANTED is
Book 1 of the Hard Timber Mountain Men series. It's a short and steamy, instalust, enemies-to-lovers, grumpy-sunshine, forced proximity, curvy girl gets her mountain man romance. Joely is a smart, sassy, and curvy freelance journalist in town to write an article. Thatcher is a hunky, grumpy, reclusive mountain man who has been hurt. He and Joely are attracted to each other, but he is initially rude. When a storm hits, she stays with him and things get steamy until he pushes her away again. Can he let love in? These two had great chemistry and we got a wonderful HEA after a bit of angst.

He wanted solitude. She brought the storm.

Thatcher (H) has built his life around silence, solitude, and keeping his distance from the town that never stops meddling. But when a viral post dubs him "The Ghost of Hard Timber," the last thing he expects is a denim-clad, city-raised writer barging into his quiet life. Joely comes with questions he doesn't want to answer and eyes he can't seem to look away from.

Joely didn’t plan to get sprayed by a skunk or stripped bare in front of a grumpy stranger with a beard that could take awards. She just needed one final feature to finish her travel piece. But when lightning strikes and the fire line shifts, she ends up back in Thatcher's cabin, wearing his clothes and fighting feelings she didn’t come here to find.

What starts with awkward run-ins and cinnamon rolls slowly chips away at two walls neither of them meant to build. Thatcher doesn't let people in. Joely isn't sure she should stay. But one look, one touch, and everything begins to change.

Thatcher starts off emotionally locked down, but Joely’s presence forces him to face what he’s shut out for years. Joely, reeling from a shattered career, learns that some detours lead exactly where you’re meant to go. Together, they move from tension and misfires to something real, raw, and life-changing.

A steamy, instalove, grumpy sunshine, mountain man, curvy girl, small town romance, exploring love, self-discovery, redemption, isolation, connection, vulnerability, trust, healing, and community. It's about second chances in unexpected places and learning how to hold on without losing yourself.

Oh Thatcher!

This was a great read! Thatcher is a mountain man who stays to himself mostly. Joely is a writer who is more like a free spirit. Together, they make music.

Thatcher decided a long time ago not to get involved with anyone, because if you don’t get involved, then you can’t lose anyone. But when Joely comes to town, it’s like an arrow to the heart. She’s so beautiful and her laugh just lights him up, but he still tries to put her out of his mind. Until the skunk incident! It’s amazing how close you become with someone when you are both smelling highly of stinky skunk! Especially if you’re both cleaning up in a stream. He reaches the point where he just can’t resist her and after they finally get together, he’s falling fast.

So he pushes her away…again. This time he saw her face as she was walking away, and realized he just broke her heart. He finally decides maybe it’s time to let some things go and let someone in. So he goes into town and asks Nellie to be sure that Joely is at the place between their cabins so he can make things right.

They talk about things and Thatcher opens up to Joely and she falls more in love with him! A few months later, he asks her to marry him, and she says yes. He is no longer a “ghost.”

This was a wonderful story, full of emotions and all the feels. I found myself crying just a little bit at the emotions I was feeling while reading the end. They just seemed so perfect together and that kind of ending always makes me a bit weepy but happy.

If you like to read about mountain men and the women they love, just pick this book up right now. You’re going to love it! Another winner from the Awesome Eve London!

Hard Timber is a quiet little mountain town without many visitors. Then, someone posts what they call “The Ex-List” on social media. It lists six of the men from the mountain that you should avoid.

Thatcher Thorne only comes into town on Fridays. He has breakfast at The Huckleberry Café. Then, he runs his errands and goes back to his cabin on the mountain. His brother Holt is a firefighter and single dad to six-year old Lane who has night terrors. Holt finds Thatcher in the café to show him the article. Thatcher, Holt, their brother Dane and three of their friends, Ridge, Harlan and Trace are on this list.

In the article, Thatcher is nicknamed “The Ghost of Hard Timber”. Nellie, who runs the Huckleberry Café, tells the brothers that they should worry more about what put them on the list than who wrote the list. Nelly also tells them that she has a writer staying at the Huckleberry Hideaway, her rental cabin. The woman is doing a story about the top hidden gems of rentals. Nellie’s rental property is right next to Thatcher’s property.

Joely Windom is the writer renting Nellie’s cabin. Hard Timber is the last stop before submitting her article. She rented the cabin for a week to finish up the article and submit it. She is originally from Chicago but now has to do freelance work.

I loved the adventure that threw Thatcher and Joely together. Good start to the series.

Fighting to Love -
Thatcher was the town’s grump who preferred living the life of a recluse, it the town’s matchmaker had other plans for him, so she manipulated him into working with Joely, who was in town to write a story. Even though Thatcher wasn’t pleased about having to work with Joely, he got on with it, but they soon got themselves into a situation where they had to be together in close proximity and without their clothes.

However, Thatcher let his grumpiness cause frictions between himself and Joely, when they should have been helping each other. Nevertheless, Thatcher and Joely managed to have a calm conversation and their attraction for each other led to them crossing the boundaries. Unfortunately, a conversation the morning after their night together led to Thatcher reverting to his grumpiness and Joely walking away.

Luckily, Thatcher soon realised he wanted more with Joely and took steps to rectify the situation, so he could convince her to give them a chance at a future together. What else can I say other than Eve London has done it again. I was hooked on this really exciting story with engaging characters, small town camaraderie and enough drama to keep you entertained, from the beginning and unable to put it down until I finished reading it.

Mountain Man Wanted by Eve London is a charming and funny start to what promises to be a delightful series—The Mountain Men of Hard Timber. This novella follows Joely and Thatcher in a classic grumpy-sunshine dynamic that’s sure to win over romance fans.

Thatcher and his brothers—plus a few close friends—have all been named in a blog post titled The Ex-List: 6 Hard Timber Mountain Men to Avoid. Joely, a freelance writer visiting town to review hidden gem vacation rentals, has no idea she’s walking into a mountain town full of notorious bachelors. Thatcher, known as The Ghost, tries to keep his distance, but Joely’s warmth, charm, and optimism are impossible to ignore.

The chemistry between the two is instant and engaging, with just enough tension to keep you flipping pages. Joely’s light-heartedness balances Thatcher’s broody nature perfectly, and their connection feels both sweet and authentic. Add in a few hilarious laugh-out-loud moments and you’ve got a perfect afternoon read.

If you love mountain man romances, small-town charm, and stories that make you laugh while warming your heart, this is one to pick up. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of the series—especially to see how the other men on The Ex-List get their happily ever afters!.

He built walls. She brought sunshine—and a wrecking ball!

Mountain Man Wanted is a grumpy-sunshine dream come true, with all the steamy, small-town charm and rugged heat you’d expect from the first book in the Hard Timber Mountain Men series.

Thatcher is the definition of a mountain man—gruff, guarded, and perfectly content with the company of pine trees and silence. That is, until Joely Windom barrels into his quiet world with nothing but her city sass, curious questions, and a laugh that melts steel. She’s a journalist passing through… but fate—and a little forced proximity—have other plans.

I loved watching Thatcher wrestle with feelings he didn’t ask for, and Joely’s persistent, sunbeam energy was the perfect match to his stormy brooding. Their chemistry? Instant and intense. The emotional payoff? So satisfying. Joely doesn’t just see past his scars—she chooses him, and it’s everything you want in a feel-good, fast-burn romance.

If you’re into:

Protective, wounded mountain men ✅

Strong, curvy heroines who take zero nonsense ✅

Steamy forced proximity ✅

And “I’ll burn the world for you” energy ✅

…then this novella is a must-click. Quick, hot, and unexpectedly emotional—Mountain Man Wanted is a rugged delight from page one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Grumpy Meets Sunshine—and Sparks Fly in the Pines!

If you love a good enemies-to-lovers story wrapped in flannel, pine trees, and emotional tension you can feel—then Mountain Man Wanted is exactly what you’ve been searching for. Eve London delivers the ultimate grumpy/sunshine romance that hits every beat just right.

Thatcher is the definition of emotionally walled-off mountain man—rugged, broody, and determined to keep the world out. That is, until Joely storms in with her city clothes, relentless curiosity, and a smile that practically demands to be noticed. She’s here to write an article. He’s here to be left alone. Naturally… chaos (and chemistry) ensue.

Their banter is sharp, their chemistry electric, and the emotional build-up is as satisfying as the heat. Watching Thatcher unravel and Joely soften those rough edges felt like watching a wildfire spark to life—slow at first, then completely unstoppable.

Eve London brings the setting to life too—snow, pine, the snap of a cabin fire—everything feels cozy yet wild, just like the romance at its center. And let’s be honest… Thatcher is the kind of gruff, protective, deeply-feeling hero we all secretly want knocking on our cabin door.

"He's built like a grizzly bear, but just as sweet as a little koala..."

Mountain Man Wanted is the first book in the new Hard Timber Mountain Men series. This is an opposites attract romance between Joely Windom and Thatcher Thorne. Joely is a journalist who a freelance writer who is doing an article about the hidden gem vacation rentals and Hard Timber is her last stop. But when The Ex-List - 6 Hard Timber Mountain Men You Should Definitely Avoid goes viral she is also tasked with writing about the men. Thatcher is ex-military who lives a quiet life, only coming into town once a week for provisions, and timing his visit to encounter the least number of people. Thatcher is one of the men on the list and he is not happy about it. But he will be even less happy when Joely crosses his path as she is out walking and trespasses on his property. That first trespass may be in his land but soon it will be on his heart and his life.
I loved this first book in a new series. If the rest of the men's stories are as good as this one then I am going to really love the series.

🌻🌻BOOK REVIEW🌻🌻
If you are interested in a novella that includes a secluded mountain man who has pain and hurt to overcome and then he meets a woman that just turns his life completely upside down, then this is your book. Mountain Man Wanted is a novella story by Eve London.

Thatcher (MMC) and Joely (MFC) are very two different people and have completely different personalities. Thatcher is grumpy man who has lived his whole life in a small town. He is really a teddy bear, but he is hiding this from the world. Joely is an outgoing city girl and searching for what is next in her life. Both have past hurts that they are healing from.

Joely comes to a small town in Montana and meets Thatcher at Huckleberry Café. To say the least there is instant chemistry 🔥🔥🔥…..

There are some twists and turns, rich supporting characters, and some funny moments with a skunk. I enjoyed this quick read. It is less than 100 pages.

Joely’s plan was simple: spend a quiet week in a mountain cabin, finish her story on rustic getaways, and soak in the solitude. But that plan shifts the moment she meets Thatcher—a towering, brooding local whose silence speaks louder than most men’s words. Their first encounter is a flicker of something neither of them can name, but it’s clear: fate has no interest in keeping them strangers.

Despite Thatcher’s best efforts to stay closed off, life keeps pushing Joely into his path. From local events to accidental run-ins, their chemistry simmers until it finally boils over in one unforgettable night. But just when Joely thinks maybe, just maybe, this reclusive mountain man is ready to let someone in, the morning light brings a cold distance she never expected.

Joely’s heart is full, but she’s left wondering if she fell for a man made of shadows—someone who let her touch his soul for a moment, only to vanish behind his walls once more.

Is he the ghost no more?

Thatcher lives alone in the mountains by choice. That is until city girl Joely showed up in town. He's never felt that he deserved to have the love of a wife and a family.

Nellie the former high school guidance counselor who took over her mother's restaurant, is also the town matchmaker. Just ask her. She's challenged Joely to look into Thatcher's story.

Joely lost her job as a reporter when she uncovered corruption on a city council, and her source was fired. Now she's doing freelance writing.

A list has shown up in town with a list of six men who supposedly are undeserving of love. Thatcher is number two on the list as the ghost of Hard Timber. Her editor wants her to do a story about it. But can she do it?

Both Thatcher and Joely are wary of relationships and getting close to others after being hurt in the past. Grumpy, growly and hot is Joely’s first impression of Thatcher. His first impression of her, curvy, gorgeous and his to claim, leaves Thatcher stunned and in denial. It takes an encounter with a skunk and having to scrub the stench off in the creek behind his cabin to get Thatcher and Joely to acknowledge their attraction to each other. Even then Thatcher’s first instinct is to push her away, but sparks between them ignite and combust. Unfortunately, a phone call from her editor sends Thatcher into full retreat, sure he has made a mistake in letting Joely get too close. It is Nellie, the heart of the town and hopeful matchmaker who sets Thatcher and Joely back on the right track toward a happily ever after.

I am happy to recommend this short, funny and endearing novella.

This was a really cute, emotional novella and a great start to a new series. Thatcher was an emotionally unavailable, incredibly grumpy mountain man who loved his solitude and as little interaction with people as possible. Joely was a struggling journalist who came to town to write about it as a travel spot. She was stubborn and bubbly and saw right through Thatcher’s mask. There was a lot of push and pull emotionally by both of them. Both trying to protect their hearts and both falling deeper in the process. I loved Nellie’s character as well and can’t wait to see more of her. I thought she might have been the writer of the list, but now I’m not so sure. Can’t wait to see who it was and what they hoped the outcome would be. No cheating or OM/OW drama, dual POV, HEA and an epilogue in the future. Looking forward to watching the rest of the men on that list fall in love!

Joely came to town to work on a review article of great destinations. including the small town of Hard Timber. She is trying to find her way, and finds more than she bargins for.

Thatcher is the who grumpy, growley lumberjack who reculsed in the woods, only appearing when he wants to. He wasn't prepared to be blown away by Joely after seeing her on the street. Also that she was staying relatively next door to his home.

Its got great humor and sarcasm. Joely might be the sunshine in this cloudy grump duo, but she doesn't give into him. Thatcher finds it easier than he ever thought to let her in, but can he really have something real. Joely finds her world turned around after a almost mandatory stay at Thatchers. It's got real guts for forming a good relationship, heat for those who like it spicy, and humor all of us who wish we were this witty!!

Skunked into Love
What do you get when you put together a grumpy mountain man, a sunshine-filled city woman, and a skunk with the worst timing imaginable? Thatcher, known as the Ghost of Hard Timber, insisted he didn’t care what people thought. Unapproachable and full of piss and vinegar, he seemed determined to stay that way. Could Joely be the one to bring him out of his shell?
It didn’t look promising—until that fateful skunk sprayed them both in all its malodorous glory. Forced to clean up in the creek, something shifted between them. Still, Thatcher wasn’t about to let go of his defenses without a fight. Would he finally give in to love, or risk losing the best thing that’s happened to him in a long time?
For the answer, you’ll have to read this sweet and steamy short story. If you enjoy quick reads packed with heart, humor, and heat, Eve London always delivers.

Joely is in town as a freelance writer to feature Hard Timber in an article, and stays at Nellie's cabin, a stone's throw away from grumpy Thatcher. Even after a mind blowing night together, he tries to push her away. Will he succeed or will she be lost forever?

I am a huge fan of Eve London and I loved this book. It is a short, very easy to read, fun and entertaining book, full of sass and sweet moments. I really liked the characters even though Thatcher was very hard for Joely to get through to - but I suppose it makes for an even more dedicated man to his heroine. I really enjoyed reading this and following their journey. I will definitely need to be reading the other books in this series!.

I absolutely loved “Mountain Man Wanted” by Eve London. This grumpy/sunshine, enemies-to-lovers, insta-love romance did not disappoint. The story is well-written and engaging with compelling characters, heart-felt emotion, and sprinkled with humor and sizzle throughout. Thatcher and Joley are unique individuals and make a charming couple with his gruff to her sunshine. I feel that they complement one another so well and really add to the overall story. I enjoyed their chemistry and their adventure as they found their HEA. “Mountain Man Wanted” is Book 1 of the new series, Hard Timber Mountain Men.

Thatcher found himself on the ex-list which was a list of six mountain men considered unobtainable for women that were looking to settle down to stay clear of them. He always had a willing heart to help the lady that ran the local cafe. She owned a rental next to him that a journalist, Joely would be staying, while she wrote an article about said property. Joely's life had been reduced to freelance work recently due to something that happened at her last job. She noticed Thatcher immediately, when she drove into town even thought his growl was nice. They had an undeniable attraction. There were periods of humor in the story.

3.75 - 4 stars.

My heart went out to Thatcher, finding out that someone has anonymously written about you for everyone to see was not nice at all, for their judgement to be out there and for that to inspire people to make judgements about you based on what was originally written was not cool in my opinion, it was telling for me that it took someone from outside to make a difference.

I liked how these two met the things that kept bringing them together, and the connection and chemistry they had. I wanted to hug them both during this and was very pleased that they had good support which helped them to navigate their feelings and go after what they wanted.

This was a wonderful series opener and a fab insta-love romance. Thatcher is into silence and solitude, thinking that keeps him safe. He doesn't seem to bothered to find his name is on some Ex List on FB... Joely's career imploded and she's off to figure out her next step while continuing writing. She's all sunshine to Thatcher's grump but they really had a strong connection that had both of them re-evaluating their futures. I found both of these characters so relatable and loved the small town vibe that backlights their story. Expect to get caught up in how Thatcher and Joely break down each other's walls to find trust and get that steamy HEA they both deserve. I can't wait to see who's next to get their HEA from that Ex List. Good fun!

I will read anything Eve writes. She always writes from the perspective of growth and you see in such a short story. Each line packs a punch that makes you see yourself either in the main characters or in the character thatn helps them find their truth.

Thatcher needed a reason to love and again and Joely needed a place to belong. Pain has a way of opening you up and making you see the infection because when you heal there is no more pain. Joely becomes that salve for for Thatcher and he becomes her safe place.

The only issue i had was we never really find out why Thatcher closes himself off?!?

Hopefully, we will find out in the future books.

i read this book as part of an arc program. This is the first book in the Hard Timber Mountain Men series. This series is about a group of men who are listed as un-datable in an anonymous list that was posted in town. Thatcher is listed as the Ghost of Hard Timber because he keeps to himself and rarely comes into town. Joely is a writer who is in town to write a story about small town life and the tourism. Joely is a neighbour to Thatcher and he warns her to stay away from him, but circumstances keep putting them together. They start to talk and find it is nice to spend time together. I really like this story, i like the idea of a list calling out men who need to find the right woman and redeem themselves. Good story.

A skunk—what could possibly go wrong?

This is a sweet, low-drama novella featuring a classic grumpy mountain man who unexpectedly finds his person. There’s no angst here, just a cozy, feel-good romance with a satisfying happily-ever-after—exactly what you want from a shorter story.

The skunk-related anecdote adds a fun, memorable touch, and the small-town setting delivers the usual charming (and slightly meddlesome) side characters. The story also does a nice job of introducing future leads without feeling forced.

Joely is bright, warm, and easy to like—exactly the kind of person Thatcher, our gruff recluse, needs. Their chemistry feels natural, and they seem genuinely well-suited.

This first book in this new series has the Instalove and small mountain town sweetness I love. I was really eager to read about a mysterious list appearing naming mountain men that were best to avoid. Thatcher is on the list having “ghosted” people to protect himself. When he sees Joely, a writer that has come to town, he is suspicious but intrigued. Add Nellie’s guiding ways, a menagerie of rescue creatures, undeniable chemistry, stinkin’ cute moments, a bit of angst that leads to realizations and you have the perfect HEA. Cannot wait for the next on the list to discover forever. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thatcher doesn’t believe it is coincidence when Joely, a woman who is writing a story about the best mountain places to stay, shows up at the same time a list is posted featuring six of the bachelors in town that other women have been warned to stay away from.

Joely has come to town to spend a week in a mountain cabin that has received rave reviews. She isn’t sure what to make of her grumpy neighbor but the more time she spends with him the more she gets to see the sides of him that he keeps hidden.

As much as he tries to deny it Joely shows Thatcher what has been missing in his life and I am looking forwarding to seeing the other five men on the list fall as well.
