One awkward marine biologist. One ambitious professor. One gap year that changes everything.

In the golden glow of a South of France autumn, two very different lives collide.
Professor Sylvie Boucher is sharp, elegant, and chasing a major promotion. The last thing she wants is to chaperone a bunch of Californian gap-year students—until she meets Adelaide Poole.
Ade is an awkward, earnest marine biologist more at ease with sea life than people. But Sylvie captivates her, and to Sylvie’s surprise, the feeling is mutual.
As warm days fade into cosy nights, their connection deepens. But with an age gap, diverging paths, and an ocean between them, can a fleeting spark become something more? A warm sapphic romance about unexpected love, self-discovery, and finding someone who truly sees you.

*This book contains some detail of self-harm with a tertiary character.*

Jo Fletcher's Here In My Heart, the second book in the Here Together series, is a slow-burn, age gap romance set in France. Sylvie Boucher, a 36-year-old professor, is striving for promotion. Ade Poole, a 24-year-old American, is a marine biologist and pastoral supervisor to a group of students completing a gap year in France.
The story's French setting and vivid descriptions brought the settings to life and immersed me in every moment. Sylvie and Ade quickly won my heart; as their worlds collide and their characters grew, their intense feelings and challenges were evident and had me hoping for their future. Jo has delicately captured Ade’s social awkwardness and quirky ways, which I thought added depth to her character.
I see this book as more than a romance story. It delves into vulnerability, the power of connection, and self-discovery, which can often seem scary.

I love this book by Jo Fletcher featuring Sylvie from her first novel. The action is transferred to Montpellier in the south of France and we are treated to a wonderful sense of place and culture. I love the main characters - how refreshing to have a neurodiverse person being portrayed so sensitively. It was also great to meet up with the characters from her debut novel Here You Are.
This is my favourite book of Jo Fletcher’s so far. Brava! Download your copy today.

So Cute!

Marine biologist, Ade, is in France looking after a group of American gap-year students. Sylvie is a professor and in no mood to deal with dramas, but somehow, Ade’s nervousness and anxiety surprises Sylvie when she realises they share a connection. The age-gap between them gives Sylvie pause but Ade is convinced what they share is good and doesn’t want to lose her.

I really adored every second of this. Ade was so relatable as a character, so I quickly identified with her situation. But I also sympathised with Sylvie, firstly about her wariness of the situation at work with Ade and the students, but also about getting romantically involved given their age-gap and how it could be perceived in her line of work, but also because Ade’s presence there was temporary. Ade really struggled with things, so I was glad she had her sister for some guidance, Sylvie for support, and her dads. It showed how families can be different but also strong and supportive. I loved that.

Ade was fun despite her awkwardness. She was passionate about her studies and what she wanted to do. It was just that sometimes she struggled with how to achieve it all or what to do. I loved the moments she and Sylvie shared getting to know one another. They were cute, deep, and always meaningful. They took time and care, also assessing their situations and considering one another’s feelings. Of course it wasn’t without ups and downs, either with Ade and one of her parents worrying, or Sylvie holding back until a friend reminded her what was different about this and what she could lose.

A really sweet story about love and growth in all aspects of life. It focused on trust and faith that blossomed into something truly beautiful and life changing for them both.

It's not a slow start but it was about 10% before I started to really like it. I love how the author has helped me walk a neurodivergent path for a wee while.
One main is French, the other from the U.S. I’m not sure I quite got the flavour of either. Their relationship….. I bought in to the friendship most of the time but not really the romance.
Surmounting the future two continents barrier does bring tension, and I am probably more interested in how that will happen than the expression of their interest. It does feel like a real barrier rather than the ethically iffy “she’s sort of a colleague but not really” dilemma that was flirted with earlier.
I liked that Ade didn’t miraculously get better at her pastoral role in France. I was equally frustrated that Ade didn’t get better at her pastoral role in France.
There were a few lines I loved, I liked most of the book. It just didn’t give me enough detail, or explanation or maybe just depth in some areas to make me love it.

An Interesting Story

This book has an interesting premise and a lot of heart. I could see the care and thought the author put into crafting the story, and I think many readers will appreciate that. For me, the pacing was a bit slow at the beginning, and some parts felt a little heavy on detail, which sometimes made it harder to stay fully engaged. Also, I would’ve loved to feel a stronger connection and chemistry between the main characters earlier on, but I know this might come across differently for other readers.

Some characters are introduced quite suddenly, and I think a bit more background for them would’ve helped make their roles clearer. The ending felt a little rushed after the slow build-up, but it still provided closure and a sense of resolution.

Overall, while it didn’t fully click for me, the story is thoughtful and has some lovely moments. I’m glad I read it, and I’m curious to see what the author writes next!

I received an ARC for an honest review.

A very slow love story that first develops into a work acquaintance and then into a friendship.
Ade was and still is, for many, the strange, shy, and somewhat awkward twin.
She doesn't expect anyone to be interested in her, let alone understand and accept her.
But the ambitious professor in the new city in France, where she is working as a marine biologist for a year, actually seems to be the exception.
At first, it seems like a difficult working relationship, because Ade is who she is, has no experience, and has to take care of the students, even though she often struggles to provide for herself.
She often relies on her twin sister. But Sylvie is different and beautiful, and from a tentative acquaintance, friendship and understanding develop.
That alone means a lot to Ade, but can there be more?
I really liked the story.
When a character has difficulties in everyday life, no matter what the reason, it’s almost always a good start for an intriguing story! At least for me.
It makes them interesting and vulnerable. There's a lot of potential for many beautiful and special moments in stories.
I have to say, I think the first kiss went on a bit too long, but that was only because there had already been so many beautiful moments that simply passed by.
The tension built up, and when it finally happened, all I wanted to read about was their intimate relationship ;)
Of course that's not possible.
There are intimate, some very intense moments. For me, there could have been more. Ade and Sylvie are really hot and have great chemistry.
Thanks so much for the ARC! This is my honest review.

Reading Here in My Heart felt like slipping into a world where everything slows just enough for real connection to take root. Jo Fletcher perfectly depicts autumn in the South of France. From the calm rhythm of the marine centre, the low hum of academic life, to the charm of the old town, the setting gives the characters space to unfold, and it was a pleasure to join them on their journey.

Ade’s authenticity and honesty make her instantly loveable. I loved Sylvie in Here You Are so seeing her sharp edges softening around Ade was enjoyable. Their relationship felt tender and real. Not overly dramatic, but full of small, meaningful shifts. The age gap, the different ambitions, and the very different ways they saw the world, was explored with care and depth.

Jo Fletcher’s writing is deeply authentic. She has a gift for creating characters who feel familiar and are thought-provoking. Their emotional landscapes are drawn with the same care and clarity as their surroundings, which never feel like just a backdrop, but more a part of the story.

This book gave me all the feels. Highly recommended for anyone who loves sapphic romances about transformation and the joy of being truly seen.

Here in my Heart is an age-gap, slow burn, and wonderfully written romance. When I say romance, I mean a long, slow, and thoughtful love story with a gentle pace that I could keep on reading forever.

Ade is a neuro-divergent PhD student who wonders about the feelings she has for Sylvie, her mentor in a French university where she is supervising a cohort of American students. Sylvie, in turn has feelings for Ade and struggles because she feels it will look bad professor and student and could affect her promotion chances.

The emotions of both the main characters are on display for the reader to see. Sylvie relies on her friends for advice, although often not taking it; whilst Ade relies on Sylvie’s lead and sometimes completely loses her confidence ending up looking at her feet. It makes for a frisson between them both.

I enjoyed the French setting, which was beautifully described without taking over the story and the nuances between American and British characters about French living were cleverly done.

It's a great story and I’m hopeful that we’ll see more of Ade and Sylvie in the future.

Jo Fletcher’s writing style captivates the reader, balancing character emotions and dialogue within settings that makes the reader feel like they’re physically present. This age-gap, slow-burn romance is a story of forming an emotional and physical connection between Sylvie Boucher, a French professor in her mid-thirties, and Ade Poole, an American PhD marine biologist who is in charge of undergraduate students studying in France for a year.

The growth of the characters from their challenges in their jobs to their personal lives is paced perfectly. I enjoyed the character Ade because I liked her shy, awkward side, and seeing her transform into a more confident person. Ade knew what she’d found and wasn’t going to let Sylvie go. For Sylvie, Ade filled in a puzzle piece that’d been missing in her life.

As a romance, there was a satisfying HEA, but I enjoyed this book so much that I would have loved a more extended epilogue. I just wanted to hear more from these characters. I hope Jo Fletcher writes another book on these characters in the future.

A slow burn HEA work colleagues to friends to lovers’ journey that is medicine for the soul. Jo Fletcher’s character driven storyline captivates you from the get go!
The South of France makes for a beautiful backdrop and allows the two main characters’ relationship to develop, Sylvie an ambitious professor trying to get the promotion that keeps alluding her and Ade, a neuro-divergent PhD Marine Biologist who finds peace and safety amongst the marine life but is in France supervising a mixed bag of American undergraduate students for a year. Their lives collide when Sylvie is assigned to be Ade’s mentor at her French University, which in lies just one of the dilemmas as they navigate the changing dynamics of their relationship.
I didn’t realise this was book 2 of a series until after I had finished reading Here in my Heart, which didn’t matter as it is also a great standalone love story. Hopefully we will get to read more about Sylvie and Ade – am definitely recommending Here in my Heart for fans of age-gap, slow burn Sapphic love stories.

Jo Fletcher’s writing is as captivating and and full of emotional depth as ever. Here in My Heart is a beautifully told sapphic romance that draws you in from the first page and doesn’t let go.

The story centers around Sylvie, an ambitious professor, and Ade, a socially awkward but endearing marine biologist. Both characters are flawed and relatable and I was rooting for them from the moment they met. Their slow-burning connection feels real.

The novel features thoughtful representation of neurodivergence. Ade’s character is portrayed well. It’s not just a subplot, it’s part of who she is and how she connects with the world.

The South of France setting adds a rich backdrop to the story. Fletcher brings the region to life, creating a warm, immersive atmosphere in which the emotional journey of the characters plays out.

I highly recommend Here in My Heart to anyone who enjoys well written character-driven romance.

A wonderful book! I loved the main characters and really enjoyed learning about them and pulling for their relationship to survive. Sylvie is dealing with the all-too-well-known glass ceiling in academia and Adelaide (Ade) is having to step far, far, FAR outside her comfort level. It was very nice to see the addition of same-sex parents for one of the characters and the other secondary characters were fun and interesting. The chemistry between the MCs was clear almost from the start and it took both of them getting out of their own way so it could grow into something meaningful. Add in being two different nationalities and you will see how mush these two have to overcome. Perhaps my favorite part was how much Ade learned about herself and the strength and courage she had in spite of her own feelings of inadequacy. You will not regret getting this book and learning how these two get over their own personal, professional, and logistical/geographical issues to find their way together.

What a lovely romance! This is a story of two women from different countries who grow and develop emotionally as their understanding of themselves and each other develops along with their relationship. They ‘see’ eqch other and that draws them towards each other despite the age differences and life experiences.

Ade who sees herself as ‘a jigsaw piece in the wrong box most of the time’ and Sylvie who feels she’s no longer on the path she planned for herself and also realises that she’s never really let herself be open to truly falling in love.
The book is full of emotions and through their relationship with each other and their relationships with friends, family, students etc we are carried along their wonderful sometimes bumpy journey.
Thanks to Butterworth Books for giving me the opportunity to read this beautiful story and provide my honest review of it.

The premise of this book is interesting, a junior professor at a university versus an American PhD student who is chaperoning a group of American undergraduates through an exchange year. However, that also is a major issue for me…it’s too unrealistic. A PhD candidate wouldn’t do that nor would they be in charge of such a group, that would be a faculty member. As much as it may try for the “student for teacher romance,” this plotline fell flat for me. The setting was fantastic, the group of secondary characters as well. Unfortunately, the MCs felt a bit less fleshed out and issues were resolved too quickly? Angsty but also not… It’s a lighthearted and quick read.

Set in Montpellier, France, this age gap, opposites-attract romance was such an enjoyable read for me. I loved the neurodiversity representation, which was so well done by the author. It has women in academia/STEM, a lovely romance story, likeable and relatable characters... It ticks the boxes. Another point for me is when characters are supposed to be fluent in another language, sometimes it's a bit cringe when the language or grammar isn't on point and it personally affects my enjoyment of the book (if I understand the language, that is). This book had none of that and it was such a relief.
You should really read this book if you like all of the above.

I’m so happy I read this book. Jo takes us to France where she builds the relationship between Ade and Sylvie. It’s a story of understanding the complexities of another human and the love that grows from it. The characters in this story are all fun to read about. The main character’s interactions with the secondary players are written well, with fun banter, true friendships and lots of understanding. I enjoyed this story very much and I can’t wait to see where this author takes in her next work.

I enjoyed the story. Ade is quirky and needs a boost of confidence. Sylvie is a confident strong willed professor.

This is a very slow evolving love story which is usually not my first choice. But Ade drew me in for some reason - maybe her “quirkiness” hit close to home for me. A well developed neurodiverse character that was well written is always a good thing to see.

I recommend the book.

I never fail to get into transported into world of Jo Fletcher’s characters, and this beautifully written novel has not disappointed. This is a story that involves Sylvie and Ade, two very different characters from two completely different worlds, and I feel the author captures their unique personalities perfectly. Jo Fletcher’s writing is an absolute pleasure to read, and I certainly recommend this book.

I loved how the story embraces diversity within life. Ade accepts her neurodiversity and grows into life working in the South of France, supported by the undersea world and most of her family. She struggles to work with Sylvie, who is forced to act as Ade’s mentor. Both of them need to adjust their attitudes as their worlds combine.

I've read plenty of misogynistic lesbian novels, but this one is the worst. Even more ironic, one of the main characters is a feminist professor.

I made it all the way to chapter 15, when the chemistry between the two suddenly fizzled out.

I can give “Here in My Heart” by Jo Fletcher several labels. Slow burn, age gap, opposites attract, kind and gentle romance. That last one especially. I seriously didn’t want this book to end even though I couldn’t put it down. Your main characters are sophisticated French professor Sylvie, and young American PHD student Adelaide Poole. The book is set in Montpellier, France, where Ade is chaperoning a group of California science students for a year. Sylvie is Ade’s erstwhile supervisor. These two gravitate toward each other incrementally; their relationship progress is slow and gentle and very satisfying. Once they realize and/or admit to their growing attraction and bond, it becomes clear that they are meant for each other. Well, they don’t quite realize that part yet, but it was apparent to me. Their story rolls to a happily ever after conclusion as it should, but I found myself wanting more of these two. I really didn’t want it to end.

2nd book in the Here Together series I enjoyed the first but thought this one was even better. A lovely slow burn romance that really gets into the characters personalities and shows how everyone has their person whatever challenges they face in life. I completely fell for Ade and loved seeing her grow as a person. I always love reading about neurodiverse characters as long as they are well written and maintain the character throughout which was definitely the case here. Sylvie was such a sweet and caring person too, she just accepts Ade for exactly who she is, even if tempers do fly a bit, she is French after all!

Here in My Heart is such a heartfelt read. The slow-burn romance between Ade and Sylvie feels completely worth the wait, and the family dynamics, especially Ade’s bond with her sister and dads, add so much warmth and depth. Between the vivid South of France setting and the authentic, relatable characters, this story pulled me in and stuck with me. It’s one I’ll definitely be thinking about for a while.
