Straight Studies Modified: Lesbian Interventions in the Academy

Rate this book
This text examines the degree of lesbian presence throughout higher education. Contributors analyze issues such as the notion of specifically lesbian knowledge in various academic disciplines, the impact of lesbian feminism and of queer on the emergence of lesbians within higher education, and the problem of incorporating lesbian studies within the academy. From the pessimistic to the celebratory, contributors examine the effects lesbians as activists, teachers and researchers have had, and continue to have, on changing disciplines and the academy.

A good study of the development of lesbian studies in the 90's in the UK. The perspectives moves constantly from lesbian-feminism to queer theory (an emerging and widely spread focus at the time) It's a great book if you are looking for a introduction in lesbian studies, but the focus in the UK makes the book kinda narrow sometimes. I specially enjoy the chapters in politics, philosophy, linguistics and psychology. I would like to emphasize the curious dynamics between those academics with a lesbian-feminist perspective heavily supported in lesbian-separatist intellectuals like Jeffner Allen, Sarah Hoagland and Marilyn Frye, and those with a queer emphasis supported in Judith Butler and Diana Fuss. This dynamics clearly exemplified the aftermath of the lesbian sex debates of the 80's
