Even though it is marketed as YA, this reads like upper YA and feels very similar in tone to Heartless Hunter… the ending cliffhanger fully got me. I will absolutely be picking up book two.

The best way I can describe this book is an absolute utter surprise. I had my eye on this book for a while, as every time I looked at my shelf I was like hm, I really wanna read this soon.
LITTLE DID I KNOW THAT THIS WOULD BE SUCH AN AMAZING READING EXPERIENCE!
This book had so many good points and parts to it and the biggest one was the execution of the plot. I was invested the entire time. The writing made it fly by and I could not tear me eyes away from the pages if I wanted to. The book moved so fast but not too fast that the little details were missing. I also really enjoyed how this book didn't drag at any point! Sometimes with fantasy books it can get carried away in the little details, but I thought that there was a good balance of plot to romance ratio.
The characters were fairly good, but I felt like at some point they could have been better. We didn't get a lot of back story or build up, but given that (I think?) this is a standalone that was just under 500 pages makes a lot of sense. I really, REALLY wish there was a second book to this because I just want more. I thought that the characters were genuinely likable and have unique personalities and I really liked the Wren x Damien chemistry! The side characters sometimes got a bit lost in this story and they didn't exactly stand out unfortunately. It felt like they got looked over at points and that was a bit disappointing but I'd consider that to be a minor detail in the context of the whole book.
Overall, I can absolutely see why this might not be for everyone, but if you ever come across this and are on the fence, please give it a try!! I think it has a lot of redeeming qualities and is super fast and fun, but if you're looking for something deeper and more meaningful, this probably wouldn't be for you. This book is interesting and has amazing moments that make the experience fun! Definitely an enjoyable read filled with angst and tension and page-turning plot twists.

⤷ SO so fun!! i remember wanting to pick this book up bc the cover was gorgeous and the prose seemed right up my alley! that cliff hanger.. MAN THE TITLE FITS SO WELL 😭 i desperately need to know when book two comes out!
anyways.. i highly recommend this if you loved ouabh and the rose bargain series! i mainly loved this book bc of our main characters <3 i giggled, cried, and felt for them! i cant say they're my absolute faves ever but i just HAD to give this a higher rating bc it reminded me why i love the whimsical fantasy genre sm 🥹
i will say it was a bit lusty tho! they had eyes for each other in first 50 pgs, ALTHOUGH it is a slow burn so dont let that deter you! its just instant attraction yk.. also i'd classify this as UPPER YA! not (12-13 YA) happy reading everyone <3

⤿🌸 .ᐟ okay guy are you all interested yet? because i certainly was. i clicked that arc request button faster than you could say "stolen midnights" and i have to say, this was an amazing book. katherine quinn really did not disappoint, and i would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loved stephanie garber or the rose bargain. (though i have to say miss katherine quinn what did you lace this book with because i literally could not put it down...)(guys, making clear that was a joke because i dont feel like being sued for defamation lol) this novel was a total breath of fresh air. the world and fantasy elements in this book were unique and really wonderful to read about. the setting itself is unlike any other i've encountered in a book, and i really enjoyed it. the fates and magical objects were such a perfect addition to andalay's world, and i loved the incorporation of the magical gifts.
꒰🌸꒱ katherine quinn's writing is something i always feel honored to read, and this book was no different. there was opulent imagery, a unique magic system, and don't get me started on the gorgeous ball gowns. there were plot twists left and right, lovable characters, and dreamy, beautifully written chapters. the dual pov's were brilliant, properly conveying different perspectives without one voice overshadowing the other.
꒰🌸꒱ something i really appreciated about stolen midnights is its sharp commentary on society, the privilege that comes with wealth, and the twisted ways society keeps the rich wealthy by exploiting the vulnerable and poor. it plays a huge part in damien's motives and wren's character arc, in addition to the entire plot. many societal issues were really called in this book, such as abuse of power, class issues and complicated family dynamics.
꒰🌸꒱ omg the romance in this. it was so so so sweet and perfect and the banter was spot on. the grumpy x sunshine trope had me giggling and screaming and i had such a good time reading the romance. the slow burn was excellent, and it was so cute to see damien deny his feelings for wren. their chemistry is off the charts and the romance was so good, like katherine quinn really knows how to write a good ya romantasy.
꒰🌸꒱ oh and something i loved seeing in this novel? female empowerment. andalay is a patriarchal society, like most are, but an element that was really highlighted in the story was women supporting women, women knowing their worth and trying to stand up and break society's expectations of them. there was this representation of older generation of men upholding and enforcing this stereotypical, antiquated role of women, with a newer generation of men supporting independent, strong and free willed women, and i think that was executed perfectly.

⤿🌑 ꒰ wren hayes ꒱ - my girl wren oh my gosh. i love wren so much (seems to be a pattern with characters named wren ngl) she's such a sweetheart. i hate how she was manipulated by her father and her stuck up, horrible family does not deserve her at all. wren is snarky and strong, ambitious and strong willed. she will take no nonsense from anyone or anything until she gets the thing she is aiming for, and nothing will get in her way.

⤿🌑 ꒰ damien ꒱ - words cannot describe how much i love damien. he is messy, chaotic and complicated, but in all the right ways, making him perfectly imperfect. he's charming and is your average everyday thief who doesn't care about anyone at all (but then you know, he does). the dynamic between him and wren was just so wonderful, and really something that made me smile.

4.5 ✨ because I’m a little bummed at the epilogue. Although a great cliff hanger, I would have preferred the book just end with the final chapter (37). Otherwise, I am obsessed with this book. The characters, the plotline, the magic...truly wonderful! Rounding up, obviously. I predicted a good chunk of the twists and still couldn’t get enough. This might be a favorite of mine.

This book was okay. I had too much of high hopes and that ending pissed me off😭😭 how long would I have to wait for the second book now??!!
I liked Wren and Damien individually. But yeah I liked the book too, it's just, I had too high hopes.

This reminded me a little bit of The Rose Bargain and Heartless Hunter. It’s your classic enemies to lovers story that is full of banter, nicknames and lots of insta lust.
I LOVED the setting which parallels Regency England. The vibes are very whimsical and we get to attend balls, see beautiful dresses and enjoy the ambience to the fullest! There are also magical gifts that are bestowed on the characters and I loved that aspect.
The pacing really prevented me from rating this higher. There was a lot of repetitive flirting and not a lot of story. The plot was there, but I found it undeveloped. I also didn’t love our MMC because he was morally grey in not the most fun way. This just dissolved into every other romantasy book after about 30%.
Overall I had a fun time!💓

it’s kind of surface-level and like every other ya fantasy romance, but i enjoyed it nonetheless. the characters and dynamics are fun, but don’t know if i’ll read the next book. it reminded me of heartless hunter and the rose bargain (i’ve only read the former). it felt a bit repetitive and there was a bit too much flirting and not enough development of the plot. the middle dragged and the ending rushed the story along. i think if i felt more attached to the characters this could have worked for me, but i didn’t love them. i bought this for the beautiful cover and sprayed edges and i don’t regret my purchase despite it not having the best story. :) it was a fun time and i would recommend it if you are looking for a sweet young adult fantasy romance.

it’s kind of surface-level and like every other ya fantasy romance, but i enjoyed it nonetheless. the characters and dynamics are fun, but don’t know if i’ll read the next book. it reminded me of heartless hunter and the rose bargain (i’ve only read the former). it felt a bit repetitive and there was a bit too much flirting and not enough development of the plot. the middle dragged and the ending rushed the story along. i think if i felt more attached to the characters this could have worked for me, but i didn’t love them. i bought this for the beautiful cover and sprayed edges and i don’t regret my purchase despite it not having the best story. :) it was a fun time and i would recommend it if you are looking for a sweet young adult fantasy romance.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I raided a fantasy book this low. This was one of the worst examples of telling not showing that I’ve ever read, and I honestly can’t believe it was a book of the month pick. I’m usually really easy to please, especially when it comes to fantasy novels, however Everything about this annoyed me so much that I can’t justify giving it any higher of a rating. RTC

From the epigraphs, to the main characters’ dynamic, to the Fates and magic, and the betrayal and twists…this was exactly what I wanted in a fantasy romance! (minor things that were personal preference that made me not give it a full 5, but so so close!)

Really loved this regency flair romantasy with magic and intrigue. I enjoyed the chemistry between Wren and Damien as they tried to figure out what was going on in their city. The use of magical gifts and fates was really a fun and unique aspect of the story. I loved that the whole time you are left guessing about the mystery of the city that you don’t even realize is a thing at the start. The way the story unravels as you read is really fun and clues are interspersed throughout. It feels like you are discovering everything along the way with the characters which makes it feel like a really fun adventure. The way the whole story unveils really was a pleasure and I enjoyed being along for the ride. I can’t wait to read the next book !!!

have you ever seen the meme of 2 aliens holding each other’s faces and like really close to eachother? yeah that was what the main couple was giving😭
every time they would have a conversation the mmc would like pull her against him or some cringey stuff like that it was pissing me off UGHH CAN WE HAVE A NORMAL CONVERSATION🤦♀️
mind you they hardly knew eachother
i don’t think they had one conversation without touching eachother😭

I'm a little torn about how to review this one, so I'll tell you how it made me feel as I went along. At the very beginning, the concept of her having her gift stolen was a little hard for me to read because it was so awful and sad. So, I read a tiny bit at a time trying to decide if I was going to finish. But once I got to the 40% or so mark suddenly, I got sucked in. I was riveted and started turning pages a lot faster. It's like I had to get over that hump of society doing things that made me sad. Therefore, the portion of me that recommends this book does so because it's very compelling. You start to want to know what happens to these good-chemistry characters. There is a fine balance between having spice and YA. I think this is slightly too much spice for YA but not enough to be new adult. It's in the middle. Unfortunately, without details, as I got to the 90% or so portion of the book, I began to get the sense that not enough was being resolved. Sure enough, cliffhanger city. Don't get me wrong, there is a delicate balance in series books. The author can't tie everything in a bow because there's going to be a book 2. But the readers want a significant portion tied up. Enough ties to feel satisfying. Did this meet the satisfying ending mark? There were twists which were satisfying, but ultimately, I personally come down on cliffhanger side rather than the satisfied side. I noticed one other review calling the ending "brutal" in terms of cliffhanger. So, I took off a star for that. Where did we lose the second star? Realism. I can't believe that I'm going to be the person that says "realism" in a fantasy book review. But I read mostly fantasy and while the rules can be magical and different, they have to be believable. I felt that this had a few too many places where I couldn't suspend disbelief enough. Again, no spoilers, but with sufficient vagueness let's just say that the most major loss of belief was the medical anatomy aspect. These aren't aliens or fae or elves. They're people like us. So, I expect that anatomy to be similar and you can't just wave away a major injury with a superficial patch job without at least waving a magic artifact. End result: I mostly enjoyed reading this and I'm not sorry I picked it up. Therefore 3 stars.

Wren is the first of her high class family not to be bestowed a favorable magical gift from the gods on her birthday, or so she thinks. Damien, a renowned thief from the lower sector has stolen her gift but mysteriously finds himself caught up her path as his own magical abilities begin to diminish. Wren makes it her mission to find out why she didn’t get a gift but finds herself in the middle of a much bigger plot in the city involving the gods, the difference classes and her family right in the middle of it. She acquires the help of Damien to uncover the mystery of her stolen gift and the even bigger mystery of what is happening to the people in their city.
This story has quite a lot of mystery and adventure elements to it that make for a fast paced read. I was always happy to pick it up and see where the narrative was taking us, especially with the interesting backdrop of the city of Andalay. I will say, that I was again caught unawares that this is not a stand alone novel. Especially since I saw that there was an epilogue at the end of the book, I thought it was coming to an end, but instead it’s just a mighty cliff I am looking over. I did find the reveals and twists at the end to be extremely intriguing and not what I was expecting from the story though definitely worth the follow up read of the next book whenever that may be (let’s just pray I remember the major plot points by the time it comes out).
For those intrigued, I will note that if you enjoyed The Notorious Virtues, this book has some similar vibes, with the have and have nots in a world where magical properties and power corrupt the rich. The books are very different in their execution and story telling but if you like that genre of story, you will definitely find a home in Stolen Midnights.

i had a great time during this book! the pacing was great & i loved the mystery aspect. that was actually my favorite part. i loved learning little tidbits that led us to the final conclusion. it was left on a cliffhanger and i don’t even know when the next book comes out! there were a lot of part that felt very cliche and cookie cutter. the dialogue and chemistry felt kind of cringe and forced. it felt like they were trying too hard to appeal yo the book girlies but it was too apparent. also i feel like a broken record at this point.. but WHY IS THERE SPICE IN YA BOOKS??! there were two scenes and they weren’t super detailed, but enough to know what was going on..
this definitely read more like a new adult romantasy but with the cringe factor of a YA if that makes sense 😂
all that being said, despite those couple complaints i had a good time reading and the story kept me turning pages quickly.

Good news, everyone. If you can't write better than a high schooler in grade level English on their first draft, you can still be published! Because Katherine Quinn wrote this book and was published with writing that made me scream internally. The way she structured her sentences... 😱 the stilted way everyone talked... 😱 the awkward transitions between plot points... 😱 the words she chose to use... 😱 It genuinely felt like a rough draft just outlining the bare bones of a story and characters that would be fleshed out later. But no, finished product alert.
That being said, the plot also still sucked. The romance was shallow and mildly problematic. And... the final reveal was dumb. So it's only got one of the most beautiful covers I've ever seen going for it. I feel like if it got rewritten and fleshed out, though, it could've been good. The bare bones were there.

Stolen Midnights really impressed me with its sharp social commentary on wealth, privilege, and the ways society exploits the vulnerable in order to keep the rich in power. . Wren, the snarky and strong FMC, delivers one of the most powerful lines in the book:
“I’m sorry because I allowed myself to be blind when I had the choice to do otherwise. I’m sorry for being a part of a society that uses people when they’re desperate. That forces them to remain desperate. Afraid. Hungry.”
Damien, the MMC, is chaotic and complicated in all the right ways, bringing a messy charm that balances Wren’s strength and makes their dynamic one to smile at. I loved the world building and character development throughout the story as well.

This was my selection for this month's Book of the Month. Based on the summary, the storyline sounded very interesting and I was eager to jump right in.
The thing with this story was that with the basic outline, this story had so much potential. The entire basis of the Fates ruling over this country and the gifting of the magic gifts on the 18th birthday....what a unique and interesting premise. The problem was that the world building was almost non existent. We were told that there are three Fates, but are not given much more information or background about them. We were also never given more information about the magical structure of the city of Andalay. Where did the magic come from? How was it determined which person would receive which magical gift....and what power? We are told that there are magical "hounds" that deliver the gifts, but they are never mentioned again. Did the Fates REALLY have a hand in people's fates and/or have the ability to know the future? Because certain events at the end lead us to believe that might not be the case. Then there is the case of a certain note left for our FMC - so I was completely confused and not sure what to think.
The story introduces us to FMC Wren Hayes. She is the pampered daughter of one of the nobles - a Lord - who helps run the city. Things take off when Wren's magical gift that she was expecting at midnight of her 18th birthday never arrives. Little did she know that it was stolen on its way to her house.
Then there is MMC Damien. He is a thief - a very good thief - who was the person hired to steal her locket. Things become complicated when he looks into the locket and finds his picture in it. That sets the rest of the book in motion. Wren and Damien end up teaming up - at first because Wren thinks he is going to help her find her missing artifact, which was then stolen AGAIN from Damien.
When we get to the last portion of the book, things become very interesting. Unfortunately, there is a HUGE cliffhanger. I didn't even know that this was the beginning of a series so that was a bit of a bummer.
There is the push and pull between Wren and Damien and while this was supposedly an Enemies-to-Lovers trope, it felt more like insta-love. I also got the feeling that this was supposed to be this grand statement on societal expectations and gender roles, but while it is mentioned in the story, it never really allowed this narrative to grow. This feeling was confirmed by the authors comments in her author's note praising people who protest in today's real world.
The end was definitely a twist I did not see coming, but it also completely pushed the boundaries of believability in the way everything ended up - especially the Epilogue with Wren.
Will I continue on to book 2? Probably....maybe....I'm not 100% sure.
This was my selection for this month's Book of the Month. Based on the summary, the storyline sounded very interesting and I was eager to jump right in.
The thing with this story was that with the basic outline, this story had so much potential. The entire basis of the Fates ruling over this country and the gifting of the magic gifts on the 18th birthday....what a unique and interesting premise. The problem was that the world building was almost non existent. We were told that there are three Fates, but are not given much more information or background about them. We were also never given more information about the magical structure of the city of Andalay. Where did the magic come from? How was it determined which person would receive which magical gift....and what power? We are told that there are magical "hounds" that deliver the gifts, but they are never mentioned again. Did the Fates REALLY have a hand in people's fates and/or have the ability to know the future? Because certain events at the end lead us to believe that might not be the case. Then there is the case of a certain note left for our FMC - so I was completely confused and not sure what to think.
The story introduces us to FMC Wren Hayes. She is the pampered daughter of one of the nobles - a Lord - who helps run the city. Things take off when Wren's magical gift that she was expecting at midnight of her 18th birthday never arrives. Little did she know that it was stolen on its way to her house.
Then there is MMC Damien. He is a thief - a very good thief - who was the person hired to steal her locket. Things become complicated when he looks into the locket and finds his picture in it. That sets the rest of the book in motion. Wren and Damien end up teaming up - at first because Wren thinks he is going to help her find her missing artifact, which was then stolen AGAIN from Damien.
When we get to the last portion of the book, things become very interesting. Unfortunately, there is a HUGE cliffhanger. I didn't even know that this was the beginning of a series so that was a bit of a bummer.
There is the push and pull between Wren and Damien and while this was supposedly an Enemies-to-Lovers trope, it felt more like insta-love. Stolen Midnights by Katherine Quinn
I really enjoy this YA Romantasy. Pretty much you get a thief/bad boy named Damien who steals Wren's gift at midnight so Wren ends up thinking she wasn't blessed by the gods. She's high society daughter, who obviously is rich and a little spoiled. So when Damien and Wren start to run into each other they end up being forced to spend time together through a chain of event. This story is full of cute scenes and sassy banter. I like how their characters keep crossing paths like they are "meant" to find each other and the romance is very slow. It's a perfect slow burn with so much tension. I love Wren and Damien and I can promise you that you'll love their romance too.
This story is full of secrets, dreams, adventures, and a beautiful world with a unique magic system where only certain people are blessed by the gods to have magic.
I would recommend this to anyone who loves a fantasy world with magic in it, a little bit of a political issue in the plot, and a bad boy who turns to mush for the main character.

this book started out with a bang, and did not disappoint me once! the characters were great, the story was intriguing, it was a fast-paced read, and the world building made me feel like i was in Andalay right beside Wren and Damien🫶🏻
this story is about a girl who was meant to receive a gift from the Fates, but on the night of her 18th birthday, that gift is stolen before she ever receives it. in order to get it back, she enlists the help of a charming but dangerous boy who just so happens to be a thief himself. and along the way, they uncover shocking secrets that will leave them different than before… and try not to fall in love while their worlds fall apart.
i absolutely adored Wren’s character from the start; naive she might be, but a pushover she is not! she dresses to please herself instead of society and doesn’t really care what the other nobility thinks of her. she’s headstrong and learns to fight for what she thinks is right; i simply love her💕 and as for Damien, he’s definitely more than the gruff thief who only cares for himself that he appears to be. these two made a great duo, and i absolutely can’t wait for more of them!
also, that ending? my jaw hit the floor more than once!!😱 i definitely didn’t see it coming, and i absolutely need the next book to find out what will happen!!

This book was a pleasant surprise of a book that winded up being one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. Katherine is an author that I have followed for a while now after I loved her book, To Kill a Shadow.
We meet Wren, a girl who lives in a world that on your 18th birthday you receive a gifted item who’s gifts can range in usability big or small but when her gift doesn’t come she fears she is one of those who is deemed unworthy of one. Unknown to her she had a gift but on its way to her it’s stolen my a thief named Damien. A boy who when he gets her gift, a locket, he is startled to find his picture on inside.
And so sets the stage for a romance between a thief and an upper class girl. Secrets are revealed and the structure of their world is being rewritten. For the good? Nope. This couple is at the core of a power game that will either destroy their love or make it stronger.
I love love loved the banter of Damien and Wren, probably my favorite part outside the gift system that had me intrigued. This book revived a waning interest in YA and I would absolutely recommend this book to lovers of romance, banter and a world that will have you intrigued.
