David Gillette was an American paleontologist best known for his discovery of the dinosaur Diplodocus hallorum in 1985, and more recently for his work studying Pleistocene megafauna such as glyptodonts. At the time of its discovery, Diplodocus hallorum was the longest dinosaur known.
This book is targeted toward those who are relatively new to using an AI coding assistant (ChatGPT, CoPilot, Claude). The title is a bit off-putting as it suggests that there is an actual formula. In fact, the book tries to reinforce this by referring to formulas to get the AI to give you the "right" result. I viewed this book as more of a book of guidelines to get the most out of your AI experience. It had several useful tips, though I think there were several sections where I wish the author had not treated this like an art book. The author spent too much time on establishing "settings" and "lighting" and making it feel like I was going to paint something. If you distill the information this book presents, you will find some very useful ideas to help the use of an AI assistant. An AI assistant is just that... an assistant. It's not going to do all the work for you, nor should it. It will, however, get you close and can help productivity, so you can focus on larger issues and problems. Put another way, it also lets you focus on the challenging parts, rather than all the boilerplate code. It's a good way to introduce the idea of coding with an AI and makes it a bit less scary. I think the IT world still has some issues dealing with it, as many think it's a replacement for engineers, rather than what it is: a tool. While this book isn't the gold standard, you can do worse. For the cost of the book (especially on Kindle), I was not disappointed, and it was well worth the short read. I finished it in about 4 hours. For the $6 I spent, I consider that a steal, as some of the hints I picked up I expect to reap benefits for years to come.
