Murder at Mayfield Manor is book 2 in Lady Elizabeth Hawthorne Mystery by Olivia Rose. I enjoy this newest series by Ms Rose. The characters are good as is the mystery. Elizabeth is enjoying a reunion with a childhood friend, Clemmi. Unfortunately, a blizzard strands everyone and with a killer among the guest, Elizabeth is forced to work with Jonathan again. I found this fast paced mystery to be very enjoyable. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
This was a fun historical mystery. I'm looking forward to the next one. And curious to know more about Jonathan and if he will be showing up again in future books.

This is a cozy murder mystery - and the word cozy is quite apt here. The author does such a good job of describing the bitter cold wind and snow that I shivered in my South Carolina home in June. Apparently this is the 2nd in a series but it stands alone quite well. Elizabeth is going to visit her dear friend Clemmi Mayfield because Mayfield is getting married. There's a Countess Magdalena von Habsfeld who isn't who she seems to be and a Jonathan Ashcroft and I think most readers met him in the 1st book. Because the wedding is so close, the house is full of visitors and because of the snow storm (did I mention how bitterly cold it is?) everyone is trapped in the Mayfield home. And that's when someone dies - and it's obviously someone in the home. There are lots of characters who act suspiciously and others are just plain suspects, but Jonathan and Elizabeth do a good job of ferreting out the killer. I'm thinking this is post WWI so it's a treat that a woman (Elizabeth) is encouraged to be one of the detectives.
Definitely cozy - plan on getting a blanket to read the narrative.
This was the second book in the series and I was hoping to see more of a character growth for Elizabeth. But sadly that was not the case.
What set me off in this book was the non-introduction of characters. The scene describes one person entering the room and suddenly there's a dialogue between another person who was not present before. Another thing which felt weird was that the characters kept pushing the investigation to the next day, even though there was a murderer in the house.
Again, I felt like the author can move the focus from what Elizabeth is wearing or how cold the weather was, to more important parts of the book. There are too many adjectives and I feel simpler language would have conveyed the story better.
The books need a little bit of flow as I find it difficult to read when the books lose their rhythm. Also it's a little light for my taste.
I received an advance copy of the book and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Murder at Mayfield Manor is a fun who-done-it taking place during a blizzard that’s stranded all the guests with a murderer on the loose. Lady Elizabeth helps with the investigation. As soon as they started to interview the guests, I knew who’d done it.
It was enjoyable, save for a couple of things. At one point, Elizabeth, who is always caught up in tremendous introspection, talks about keeping a “laser-focus” on the investigation. Lasers weren’t even an idea until 1959. Lol
The second problem for me was a grammar error that I blame the editor for not catching. One of my biggest pet peeves - the erroneous use of “I” instead of the correct “me.” As in “She approached Father and me…”
I read the first book in this series and couldn’t get past all the adjectives. I was hoping this one would be better. It’s not. One example of something that stood out to me was that on page 13, Elizabeth’s “lips curved into a smile.” On page 14, her lips also “curved into a smile.” Someone’s lips “curve into a smile” five times in the book. Although in one case they “curve upward,) which I’m pretty sure is a smile. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Everything is so painstaking described that it’s hard to get into the story or get to know the characters.
There’s just so much description of everything it makes it hard to get into the story.
This book, number two in the series, is a delight.
The writing flows, with the words and descriptions threading across the page like fine embroidery.
I don’t recall this quality of writing in the first book in the series, “Murder on the SS Andromeda,” but it certainly sparkles in this volume.
Lady Elizabeth shines throughout, and many of the characters are so authentic that they seem to leap from the page with their own reality.
(Some pesky editing instructions seemingly by the author are left in this published work, probably just to bewilder readers who fail to understand why they weren’t noticed.)
I was glad to see Clemmi stand up to the "countess". And. I was wasn't disappointed to see who the cold cruel victim was. Now they had to figure out whodunit! This was very intriguing to watch them questions each person, but those answers were measured and guarded. The real clues are when people are relaxed, like meal times. Ooh la la the clues!!! Some very tense moments come for Elizabeth and Jonathan. Would they survive to tell the tale or are they victims 2 and 3????? A great adventure. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
It is not often that one marries the love of their life, especially among Lady Elizabeth's social circle so it was with delight that she learnt that her bestie, Lady Clemmentine was engaged to a man who she loved, respected and felt was her soul mate. But things were not all HAE when a blackmailer rears her ugly head and even worse, when she gets her comeuppance.
I was not terribly enamoured with book 1 in this series but wanted to see if things would get better and I must admit it did. I found this one better put together and it was quite an enjoyable read.
Second in a new Historical Cozy Mystery Series set in 1920's England follows Lady Elizabeth Hawthorne. I found the book to be a quick easy read. Elizabeth goes to visit a childhood friend and is soon in the middle of an intriguing case. There's secret marriages, murder and blackmail awaiting her at the Mayfield Manor.
Thanks to Book Sirens and Olivia Rose for the E-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lady Elizabeth is a lovely character in this charming dated mystery. The murder of a countess during the preparations of Lady Elizabeth's friend's wedding (Clemmie) is the main plot. However why is Clemmie not her usual self - why are other people there………….. A very interesting description of the upper classes and how Lady Elizabeth (with the help of a mysterious Jonathan) unravels the mystery of what is really happening.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This mystery may even surpass the SS Andromeda for suspenseful writing ! Lady Elizabeth and Johnathon Ashcroft join forces to unmask a murderer. Again there's an exceptional cast of characters with even the Great Blizzard taking on somewhat of a character role! It's a page turner of epic proportions as time is of the essence in the solving of the crime. It's fast paced sleuthing at its best! Looking forward to book three in the series ~ Murder on the French Riviera ~ don't miss an exciting page of the Lady Elizabeth series!
Lady Elizabeth attends a gathering at her b st friends home Mayfield Manor. One of the guests is found strangled and with the blizzard outside confines all the guests to stay put.Blackmail, and traitor issues add to the story. As she works the puzzle, she be mes the murderer's next victim.
I received a ARC free from Book Sirens and this is my voluntary honest review. Enjoyable! Well written! Characters were captivating and compelling. It was fast paced. A quick, easy read and hard to put down. Fun. Gripping. Intriguing and suspenseful.
Lady Elizabeth's ability to deal with difficult situations really comes into play on this story. Who to trust and what to believe is certainly a big part of what she needs to work through in this story. There are just enough twists to keep this story exciting.
Lady Elizabeth is visiting her friend Clemmie who is preparing for her wedding. A major snow storm hits and everyone is snowed in. A Countess is found dead she has been strangled, footsteps in the snow leading away from the mansion. This was a really fun book and I recommend it.
Olivia Rose knows how to weave threads of a story into a tapestry of deceit hidden by the trappings of the elite. She does a masterful job of creeping us toward the climax, then leaves us wanting more. I can’t find anything not to like.
This series turns out to be one of those short, simple novels, without great pretensions, that make you spend a pleasant time. Nothing really original and the characters are a bit overdimensioned, but all in all a pleasant series of intrigue.
