Under Fire

Rate this book
When a workplace fire lands widowed single mom Sloane Merritt in the arms of grumpy firefighter Weston Graves, their rescue goes viral—and so does their chemistry.

Thrown together for a string of awkward interviews, what starts as mutual disdain turns into late-night calls, stolen glances, and heat that has nothing to do with the flames they escaped. But West is still haunted by the brother he couldn’t save. And Sloane isn’t sure she can survive loving someone who runs toward danger for a living.

They’re opposites, no doubt. But the more their lives entwine, the harder it gets to walk away.

If falling for him is a risk… it might be one worth taking.

4⭐️ YOU GUYSSSSS!

I loved this book, this book had me angry, happy, laughing & kicking my feet- this was such a real/raw book! I applied for this ARC on the authors page from a random post I just happened to stumble across and I am so glad I did! These characters aren’t 18 and fumbling through life but their 30 something year olds who have already dealt with so much in life and are still figuring it out- this book was a breath of fresh air, it does deal with grief but it is done SO well- it is realistic & raw and it doesn’t shy away from the hard parts while still providing a happy enjoyable read! The side characters are also SO good, every character in this book just felt real and fun to read about!

A Hot firefighter rescues a widowed single mother... Could be a cute meet cute, but it's not. They are both so stubborn and have so much past baggage that the first encounters don't run that smoothly.
Will they grow to like each other? Yes, definitely.
Unpacking the history of the main characters is hard, and you should definitely read the trigger warnings.

Thank you to the author for gifting me this e-copy. This is my voluntary review.

I cannot believe that this is a debut novel by Sarah Waterman! Her writing and character development were so on point; I’m surprised that I liked this book, but I am surprised at how much I loved it.

Under Fire brings together a curmudgeon fireman and a snarky single mom when her workplaces catches on fire and the rescue goes viral. This not-so-meet-cute forces West and Sloane to share the limelight…and eventually feelings.

I loved how so much of this book also focused on the character development rather than just the romance. Both West and Sloane have issues they need to address and work that impact their ability to be together— so it’s just as much about their own growth as what they grow into together. I also appreciate that both mcs are so laser and more well established in their lives. My only frustration with this book was that I found myself yelling at the characters often…but I think that means i was invested. 🤣

This is an awesome debut and I cannot wait for the next in the series. I’m giving it 4 stars, only because it didn’t make me sob (which is a 5 star requirement).

Wow, what an incredible debut! What starts off as a meet-cute between a grumpy firefighter and sassy COO he rescued, turns into so much more. Under Fire is a beautiful story about the complexity of grief and how to love again.

I couldn’t put this book down. It had everything I love in a romance - undeniable chemistry, a heartfelt story, hilarious wingwomen/side characters, and great banter. I also appreciated that these characters were in their late 30s; I related so much to Sloane.

What to expect:
🔥Loathe-to-love
🔥Slow burn
🔥Viral rescue
🔥Forced Proximity
🔥Grief and trauma rep
🔥Dual POV

I was given a copy of this book from Love and Lattes PR and the author. All opinions are my own.

It comes out tomorrow, August 8, so be sure to add it to the top of your TBR.

ARC review:

Ough, this was so cute.
Normally, I'm not much for contemporary romance these days, because I've turned into a DR girl through and through. But when I saw firefighter x single mom, I was sold.

The story follows Weston, a firefighter with a "resting asshole face" (at least that's what his sister calls it) and Sloane, a single mom and widow. They meet at an office fire where Weston tries to save Sloane who's trying to get everyone to safety. They clash. Hard. But they fall in love harder.

I really felt the story. Some of the editing threw me off, but I had a good time. I can even forgive the withheld smut 😂😂

What you get
- an absolute boss bitch with a lot on her plate
- a hero complex firefighter with his own trauma
- the cutest little kids
- a loyal best friend
- anxiety, grief, growth, love

I love it I love it I love it!
Sloane is such a badass of a single mom. Sarah did an amazing job of accurately showing the anxious what ifs that run through your head as a mom.
West of course is the ideal book boyfriend: grumpy, protective, and loves her kids. Bonus points for tattoos and trauma
I love when a pair of siblings/twins adopts a new person into their group! Sibling banter always adds humor and love into a book.
I so appreciate when kids are accurately represented as the age they are supposed to be!

Foreplay fades to black

Anyone else wanting Sloane to yell at West?! I love a good gut wrenching moment before a happy ending 😍

This book was recommended to me by my mom (who was also an arc reader) and per usual she was right when she said I would like it.

It has an amazing plot, great characters, lots of trauma, and a hint of spice (all the ingredients to cook up a good book).

This is a debut novel?! Are you kidding? No but for real this was hands down a GREAT book! I loved the enemies to lovers vibe that this one had. I swooned so hard over West! He was so gentle, patient, caring and loving towards Sloane and her kiddos! This one definitely had some more emotional topics and possible triggers that may not be easy for everyone to read. Overall I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to see what is in store for the future of this series!

BLURB:

MY THOUGHTS:
Sarah’s debut novel was so beautifully written and has so much emotion within the pages. With the complexities of grief, self development, and learning to love again, this book really pulled at all of my heartstrings. I absolutely loved Sloane’s character. She is the definition of a boss bitch with so much on her plate, but she is doing all that she can for her little ones. West, what can I say about this hot firefighter who, as per his twin sister says, he has a “resting asshole face”. But even though he has his grumpy moments, this man is gentle and patient. While they started off not being each other’s biggest fans, they slowly started to get to know each other and they realize they aren’t so different when it comes to love and loss.

Overall, Under Fire really brought the heat and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the series brings! Thank you @a3w_editorial & @loveandlattes.pr for this gifted ARC. 🔥🧡

Burned hot, fanned out fast. I loved the super charged tension between Sloane and West, but once they got together it was too much too fast. I wish there would’ve been more time between the NYC trip and the couple getting together.

What I loved: the writing- for debut novel it was incredible writing, the depiction of grief, and of course the characters. Each character had a vital role in the story.
I also loved that it showed it’s okay to accept help. Sometimes you just need someone to pick up your groceries and let you take a nap. Showing love through the little things is just as important as grand grand gestures.

What I didn’t love: the insta love- when involving kids in the story I feel like there is fine balance between involvement and replacement. This topic was discussed but not really implemented.

For a debut novel, it was fantastic. I definitely see amazing potential in this author. My rating truly just came down to pacing.

An enjoyable, emotional read. Sarah did an amazing job showing the different facets of dealing with grief and moving on with life after losing someone you love deeply. Sloan and West both have tremendous trauma they are dealing with but both in different ways. The emotions are tangible and I really felt for them. I also laughed at West’s grumpy banter and Sloane’s witty come backs on so many occasions. I found myself begging them to get their happy ending. Looking forward to the rest of Station 8’s stories.

I was hooked from the moment I met Sloane. I felt like I could relate to her bossy sassiness and her bravery or stupidity...depending on who you ask. Then when West showed up it was a sealed deal. The tension and banter between them from the start is phenomenal. But what really made me swoon were the softer sides of West as the story/relationship progressed. I have related to a few characters over the years but never as well as I did to Sloane. I can't wait to read more about the members of Station 8.

I received an ARC copy of this book and man oh man, it was an amazing book. I couldn’t put it down, I read it before work, during my lunch breaks, after work until late at night. The story was gripping! You could feel the tension, the apprehension, the heartbreak, and the characters were written so realistically. I honestly couldn’t believe that this was Sarah’s first novel!

You can read the blurb about the storyline, so I will spare you a recap. But you will be missing out on an amazingly written story about starting over, moving on from the pain of lost loved ones and finding a second chance at love in the most peculiar way, if you don’t read this book! I laughed, I cried, I held my breath and cheered along with the characters, West and Sloane.

This is a romance with so much heart - I feel like I can’t accurately explain it other than to say this story will break you a little, but it’ll remake you as well.

Pros: this is a debut, and it’s an absolutely incredible one! The way Sarah navigates the complex emotions and motivations behind her characters is incredibly impressive. Also, hot firefighters (need I say more?)! But seriously, this book is the perfect blend of spicy, sweet, and emotional.

Cons: early on the MMC is kind of unlikeable. He doesn’t have all the information, but instead of solving that by asking questions, he’s kind of rude. It doesn’t detract all that much from the overall story/romance, but it’s been a while since I’ve read a book where I’ve spent so long opposed to the MMC

Check the triggers on this one. It deals with some intense subject matter and might not be for everyone. And if you’re a crier, I would be prepared for some tears.

ARC review

I adored this book so much. It really hit me in the feelings, it was soooo good.
West was so grumpy but around the people he loved, especially Sloane and her kids, he just melted. He was hurting too and meeting Sloane and loving her and her children made him change to the better.
Sloane had a lot on her plate and the last thing she expected was a new man in her life. But no matter how hard she tried to push him and away and resist him, there was no use, he was there to stay. He too helped her in her healing journey and they made a beautiful family.
I loved them together, they each bought out in each other their better qualities and their lives got better because of it.
I just loved their love

Under Fire by Sarah Waterman delivers emotional tension, heartfelt grief, and just the right amount of heat.

Sloane is a single mom of two, still learning how to navigate life after losing her husband. West is a grumpy firefighter with his own heavy past, haunted by loss and quietly questioning if he belongs in her life at all.

Their first meeting is pure chaos — a building fire, an evacuation, and Sloane determined to run back in to save a friend. From that moment, the sparks are undeniable. The animosity simmers into banter, the banter into longing, and the longing into something deeper.

What I loved:

The nicknames Hero Barbie & Rescue Ken

The mini trope moment where West bathes her — swoon

A respectful, adult approach to conflict resolution (no endless miscommunication)

Emotional beats that balance grief, moving forward, and falling in love again

Both POVs feel real. You understand why each character reacts the way they do — even when they’re at odds. And the way West quietly, steadfastly proves himself as someone who wants to be part of her world? Absolutely heart-melting.

If you love firefighter romances with real emotional depth, relatable characters, and a slow-burn that’s worth every page, this is one to pick up.

Thank you to the author for gifting me this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Although the relationship and romance improved and developed as the story went on, I found the male main character, West, to be very unlikable in the beginning. At times, he was downright rude and disrespectful to the main female character, Sloane. Due to his behavior and actions in the beginning of the book, I found it hard to root for a relationship between him and Sloane. As the book progressed, however, you did start to see a softer side of West, especially with Sloane's children.

I loved Sloane and thought her character was well done. She was depicted as being a very strong female main character. She was also vulnerable at times and it was great to see a more personal side of her instead of the tough exterior she normally had.

If you are looking for a light and fluffy romantic comedy, this would not be the best pick. It is a real and raw look at love and the difficulties one may encounter in life. It is a love story worth fighting for, but contains heavy content.

This book does contain spice, but it is not overly done.

This book does touch on many sensitive topics so please check the trigger warnings before reading.

I absolutely loved this enemy to lover book! The hot firefighter and bad ass single mom. This book took Sloane and West through a roller coaster of emotions. Both characters had such baggage individually that it brought out the worst in them during their first few encounters. Sloane is such a bad ass independent woman. She cares for her kids and works a great job. Something that normally takes a village to do she does with little to no help. It’s nice to see in the store how she is capable of doing things herself but slowly she begins to let others help her so she doesn’t have to do it alone. West. The typically cocky hot firefighter. At first he got on my nerves the way he was acting 😅 but once I got to know his character and realized what he’s been through I began to like him more. This book was amazing! I wish I could read it again for the first time!

If you haven’t already pre ordered your copy make sure to do so!!

A beautifully written and emotionally gripping love story that is an very well done, and a debut at that!

This book will tackle hard and sensitive subjects with such raw honesty, it truly draws out emotions that feel deeply real as these are reflections of what so many experience in daily lives. It's a story into love, loss and the incredible difficult journey of moving on.

Sloane is portrayed wonderfully in this story. The author did a sensational job crafting her character as a tough, independent, and strong single mother. I feel sometimes in stories this kind of portrayal is overdone or unrealistic in other books, but not here. Sloane feels authentic, grounded, and I appreciated that in this writing.

Overall, this was a fantastic book that I truly enjoyed reading, I did get sucked in and read it fast. It features a well-done enemies-to-lovers trope with just the right amount of banter. The male main character was a bit tough for me to connect with at first, but I quickly grew to like him. Both characters are burdened by past trauma and emotional baggage, and it was beautiful to watch them slowly heal together as they fell in love. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Sloane is the COO of Vivid Creative Group and she fires an employee who then throws a coffee at her. Later that same employee starts a fire in the offices. West is a firefighter who arrives on the scene and is shocked when Sloane runs in to save her friend. West is angry that she put herself in danger and mockingly calls her “hero Barbie”. She calls West “rescue Ken”.

After the fire, Sloane and West go to New York to appear on Good Morning America for an interview about the fire and rescue. West starts to notice her beyond the woman who ran into the fire. Sloane confuses West’s twin sister Wren for his girlfriend. She agrees to go to dinner with them one night and her and West talk about their pasts and start to really understand each other. West stands up for her and calls her a hero on GMA while holding her hand.

I loved this story. It was wonderful to show them both having to deal with pain and loss in their pasts to have a brighter future. I liked the enemies to lovers aspect of the story. Sloane’s friend Hannah brings a lot of fun and comedy to the story when things get a little deep. Definitely recommend.

This is book 1 of the Station 8 series and Sarah Waterman’s debut which I did not realize when I got this ARC. After reading I am super excited to see what comes next from Sarah Waterman cause this debut was a wonderful start!
This book has so many emotions and deals with grief/trauma so if you’re looking for light and fluffy, save this book for later. If you’re ready for a book filled with emotion and depth then dive right in. In addition to that this book features all your favorite tropes, it starts off as enemies to lovers with a really unlikable mmc, it took me a while to start to like him. Your FMC though I loved from the start. The tension is high but once they got together I felt it was too insta-love. I enjoy insta-love to a point but this seemed like a lot too fast, and maybe I felt that way more so cause there’s kids involved?
This was a really good debut and I will def be checking out the next book in the series! Thank you Sarah Waterman and Love & Lattes PR for this ARC!

This was such a cute and wholesome read that gave me all the feels!
4.5🌟
I thought this was your typical romance novel and boy was I wrong. I was not expecting how deep and emotional it would get with our FMC Sloane dealing with her husband's passing and our MMC West having lost his brother as well.

"all I want is to let her light the match. If she’s a bullet, I’ll take the shot. If she’s fire, I’ll burn"

I absolutely adored how their grief was written because it felt real and raw and the hurdles both of them encountered together and separately felt real. Sloane and West have great chemistry and banter and I couldn't help but giggle at all of their encounters (even if it was a little insta lusty).

"All my hardness wants all of your softness. This body grew two humans, and they happen to be amazing little humans"

I love firefighter shows and am already invested in all the characters introduced in this book - hoping for many more stories.

Not only is this a beautiful romance between a widowed, single mother and firefighter, but also a touching story about moving forward after grief. West rescues Sloane from a dangerous situation and an unlikely friendship develops after spending a few forced proximity days talking about the viral incident. Low on the spice and heavy on the connection and support, I appreciated that the main characters were a bit older and the ability to communication to overcome their initial misconceptions of each other. I really liked and related to how hardships and sometimes overwhelming feelings that go along with grief and being a single parent were portrayed. I enjoyed this debut! (I also went down a rabbit hole watching the mesmerizing artwork creation videos of this cool cover…the artist captured the characters to a tee!)4.25 stars!

This book took me by surprise in all the best ways. Sloane and West are both navigating heavy grief, and the way their personal journeys unfold felt raw, honest, and deeply moving. I especially loved how their chemistry built gradually. There’s heat, yes, but there’s also vulnerability, healing, and real emotional stakes.

West’s gruff exterior giving way to a total soft spot for Sloane’s kids completely melted me. Watching him turn into a protective, gentle force in their lives was one of the most touching parts of the story. The viral rescue setup was fun and added just the right amount of tension to pull these two opposites together.

This is a beautiful, heartfelt romance about second chances, healing after loss, and learning to love again, no matter how risky it feels.

Grumpy firefighter, single mom (widow).
Thank you to the author for gifting me this book. I am voluntarily leaving a review. This book was so good. I loved seeing how the characters grew. They hated each other he thought she was a reckless and she thought he was just an a**hole. Until one day they learned about each other’s past and realized they weren’t so different. They started to get to know each other. He met her kids and fell in love right away. She was scared to let someone in after everything she has been through. He was so patient with her through it all. I loved Hannah, Wren and the kids. The kids were so cute and funny.
I can write so much more about this book but it would be a lot. lol
But I definitely recommend. ♥️

Under Fire begins with heart. The opening scene, written from Sloane’s perspective, sets a fierce tone with authenticity and vulnerability that carries throughout the book. But where Sarah’s voice truly shines is through her supporting character’s relationships with one another. The soul of Silver Creek, Station 8, and everything in-between West and Sloane’s palpable chemistry resides within these details.

Under Fire is a debut novel that examines the effects trauma and grief can have on family bonds and romantic relationships. Indeed. But it is also a debut novel with characters who feel vaguely familiar, existing in a place that feels sorta like home.

I’m really glad I went along for this ride. Looking forward to what comes next.

The book is a page turner from beginning to end. Sloane and Weston are both strong people who have been through something completely tragic. I love how Weston goes from being a complete ass to being exactly what Sloane needs when her son breaks his arm. He shows everyone who is reading this story that he can be a heartfelt and loving man. Sloane is a loving mom to 2 kids, and her story goes to prove that you can find love again and love someone who saves others for a living. They are both characters who need to come to the understanding that they can find love. My favorite part of the book is close to end when West writes a note that says, "Before I could be part of your story, there was him. And I'll never try to erase that. I just hope I can help you write what comes next. "
