He’ll burn it all down. For her. A dutiful chieftain. A reclusive healer with a deadly secret. An obsession that defies the rules.

Craeg Maclean has spent his life proving he's nothing like his brutal father. He’s honorable, controlled, and his betrothal to a chieftain’s daughter will create a crucial alliance—even if the match leaves him feeling trapped.

But then his horse throws him in the woods, and nothing will be the same again.

Hazel has lived in isolation for as long as she can remember, hiding in the forest with her protective mother. She’s a gifted healer, but she keeps the world at arm’s length. When her mother dies, she reveals a devastating truth about who Hazel really is.

And then the local chieftain appears at her door, injured. The night that follows forms a connection between them. Hazel knows she should resist the pull. He’s her chieftain. He’s betrothed. And she’s ten years his elder with a deadly secret.

But Craeg can’t stop thinking about the fierce woman who challenged him, healed him, and made him laugh. For the first time in his life, he feels alive—not just dutiful. His fascination becomes obsession. And obsession becomes something far more dangerous.

She’s everything he’s not supposed to want. He’s everything she can’t afford to love.

As his wedding day approaches and killers close in, they face a choice: honor the life they’re supposed to live or fight for the one they desperately want.

Because some loves are worth risking everything for.

Full of suspense, emotion, and delicious spice, SONS OF MULL is a spin-off series from ROGUES OF MULL and HIGHLAND SCANDAL. The trilogy follows three warriors—Craeg, Ailean, and Greig—and the fierce women who make them question everything they thought they knew about duty, honor, and love.

I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping strangers to lovers, forbidden love Scottish Medieval romance novel with its added class disparity and reverse age gap tropes. Honor & Obsession is the first instalment in this new series, but fans and readers of Jayne Castel will find that the story ties in with her previous series, ROGUES OF MULL and HIGHLAND SCANDAL, and that some familiar characters from those books reappear. Once again, the author delivers a highly emotional and vivid love story full of angst, drama, action, danger, suspense, spice and compelling characters. I already knew Craeg as a child from "The Pirate's Indecent Proposal", in which his mother was the FMC. He has grown into a strong, honorable and protective man, but he is afraid of becoming like his violent father. Hazel is older than him, a loner, fiercely independent and confident, who doesn’t want to submit to any man. The chemistry between them sizzled from the very first moment and their feelings were palpable throughout the book. I really liked how Craeg fought for their love despite all the obstacles and how Hazel became his calming influence. The animals were also lovable, especially Duncan, the stubborn donkey, who always made me laugh with his antics.

Following his mother's resignation, warrior Craeg Maclean becomes the new chieftain of Moy. He is frustrated by his new mundane duties and by the fact that he can’t join his friends in battle against the English. Dutifully, he becomes engaged to Isla, the daughter of chieftain Hamish Macquarie.
Healer and herb-wife Hazel Maclean has lived alone and secluded in her cottage in the woods since her mother's death. She is angry and hurt. On her deathbed, her mother confessed that she is not her mother, but in fact her aunt. Her biological mother was raped by Hamish Macquarie and died giving birth to Hazel, and now, after all these years, Hamish's men are after Hazel and she is in danger.
When Craeg has an accident while out riding, he finds shelter in Hazel's cottage, where she treats his injuries. The two are immediately attracted to each other, but a relationship is impossible. Craeg is the chieftain and engaged, and Hazel does not fit into his world and should flee the island...

If you enjoy gripping Scottish Medieval love stories and heartfelt forbidden love romance novels with great imagery, emotion, action and heat, you will love this book!

Honor & Obsession by Jayne Castel is a sweeping, emotionally charged Highland romance that grips your heart and refuses to let go. From its first pages, this story pulls you into a world where honor is everything, secrets are deadly, and love is the most dangerous rebellion of all.

Craeg Maclean is the kind of hero you ache for—disciplined, honorable, and determined to be nothing like the brutal father whose shadow still looms over him. As chieftain, he carries the weight of his people and a betrothal meant to secure their future, even if it costs him his own happiness. Then fate quite literally throws him into the path of Hazel, a reclusive healer living on the edge of society with truths powerful enough to destroy her.

Their connection is immediate, intense, and impossible to ignore. Hazel is fierce, compassionate, and quietly confident—a woman shaped by isolation, loss, and a secret she cannot afford to share. Craeg doesn’t just see her; he feels her. For the first time, duty loosens its grip, replaced by something deeper, more consuming. What begins as fascination quickly becomes obsession—and that obsession is both tender and terrifying.

Jayne Castel excels at emotional tension. The forbidden nature of their bond, the age gap, the protector energy, and the “only her” devotion all blend seamlessly into a romance that feels earned and profound. Every stolen moment carries weight. Every choice hurts. And as danger closes in and Craeg’s wedding day approaches, the stakes rise to a breathtaking crescendo.

The setting is as vivid as the characters themselves. Castel’s medieval Scotland feels alive—its forests, shores, and stone strongholds echoing the beauty and brutality of the time. The supporting cast adds richness and depth, setting the stage for future stories while never overshadowing the central love story.

Honor & Obsession is a tale of loyalty tested, rules broken, and a love powerful enough to challenge destiny itself. If you love historical romance filled with longing, fierce devotion, moral conflict, and immersive worldbuilding, this book is an absolute must-read. Some loves demand everything—and this one is worth the risk.

Honor & Obsession
Jayne Castel
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Craeg Maclean has spent most of his life proving that he is absolutely nothing like his father was. Everything he does is honorable, controlled, and his betrothal to another chieftains daughter will make a very good alliance. The only problem is this match has left him feeling utterly trapped.

Then one day his horse throws him in the woods, and now nothing will ever be the same again.

Hazel has lived in isolation for as long as she can remember, hiding with her over protective mother. Mother and daughter are both gifted healers, but they keep the world at arm's length. Then comes the shocking time when Hazel's mother dies, but before she goes she reveals a devastating secret that she has kept for Hazel's whole life. About who Hazel really is.

Then the local chieftain shows up at her door with his dog and is injured. Hazel treats his wounds and he has no choice but to spend the night at the healers dwelling. A connection forms between them that night and it won't easily be broken. The only problem is he's her chieftain, she's ten years older than he is, and he is betrothed.

Craeg can't stop thinking about the feisty woman who challenged him, healed him, and made him laugh as if he didn't have a care in the world. For the first time in his life, he feels alive again. That's when his fascination turns to obsession and therefore so much more dangerous.

Can they fight the bonds of duty? Or will it rip them apart piece by piece?

Jayne Castel is absolutely brilliant. What a book. This book had me from the get go and when I say it had me, I mean nothing else existed except getting back to this book. We had to go somewhere and I read the whole trip there and back. This book is action packed and you never knew what was going to happen next. Craeg and Hazel were absolutely perfect for each other. All in all if you enjoy historical romance you have to read this book.

The new serie of Jayne Castel the sons of Mull sends us back to the medieval Scotland. We are again with the clan of Mcleans. The hero is Craeg Liza’s son from The Pirate's Indecent Proposal, The Highland Scandal series and in this book he’s no longer a boy and is soon to take over Liza’s rule as Cheiftan. The heroine Hazel has always known her place as a healer in the forest of Mul, until her mother reveals a dark secret and warning with her last breath. Now she is not only alone but has to make life changing decisions.
From its first pages, this story pulls you into a world where honor is everything, secrets are deadly, and love is the most dangerous rebellion of all.Their connection is immediate, intense, and impossible to ignore. Jayne Castel’s writing is exceptional. Her prose is immersive and evocative, seamlessly blending emotional depth, tension, and intimacy. She writes characters with nuance and care, allowing their internal struggles to be just as compelling as the external dangers they face. The result is a story that lingers long after the final page

Well written, full of drama, duty, honor, passion, family, love, intrigue, emotions, fears, chemistry, action, secrets, society, mystery and pets. Craeg Maclean is a Highlander Chieftain who has concerns for his people and wants to do the best for them. He is to be married to someone who he doesn't love but feels that it's best for his people. He tries to be a better man than his father. Hazel lives in the forest away from most. She is a healer who has lived a quiet life as her father wants her dead. She finds out when her mother tells her the secrets that has been hidden from her. When Craeg id thrown from his horse and hurt, Hazel helps him and emotions become a problem for them both. Hazel finds that he has a wife to be and that comes between them. Both are going to have a lot of feelings to deal with before they get to their happily ever after. Has some great pets in this story that have lots of fun characters. Great storyline plus the characters are all strong , multidimensional yet have an emotional journey to deal with. Fantastic start to a new series and where better to be than Scotland. Would recommend to everyone.

I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.

Loved every minute of this story 🩷
I was engrossed from the very start in this fabulous story, soon realizing that this book follows on from another of Jayne’s series that I loved.
Craeg is Liza’s son from The Pirate's Indecent Proposal, The Highland Scandal series and in this book he’s no longer a boy and is soon to take over Liza’s rule as Cheiftan.
Betrothed to a woman for an alliance he is disillusioned and very unhappy. When out in the woods one day he hurts himself and heads to the healer for treatment.
There he meets the beautiful Hazel and their journey together starts.
This is a story immersed with secrets, danger and a growing forbidden love.
With Craeg being brave enough to stand up for that love with his clan, no matter the consequences, then add in a little bit of spice between the two and I was hooked.
I adored the storyline and the characters so much that I can’t wait for the next few books to come out.
As you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend reading it.

I have a habit of reading a few books at one time. Honor and Obsession was a straight through read.
Scottish warriors, led by Craeg, race across Scotland with precious cargo, two royal children. In order to survive, King David II and Queen Joan of Tower need to go into exile after the successful siege of Castle Berwick. The fast-paced exhaustion of the fleeing party sets the tone of the story. The twists, turns and personalities of characters carry you through to the end.
Hazel has always known her place as a healer in the forest of Mul, until her mother reveals a dark secret and warning with her last breath. Now she is not only alone but has to make life changing decisions.
Craeg, is the next Chieftain of Moy. His first decision as Chieftain is take a bride to form an alliance. Duty bound and haunted by his father’s iron fisted rule Craeg longs for his past freedom as a warrior.
Craeg is young and impulsive. Hazel needs time to come to terms with her secret. They become friends and friends help each other until they love each other, despite secrets or honor bound duty.

I have read several books by Jayne Castel and have enjoyed each one. This one was an awesome read and I can't wait for the next book.
Craeg was an almost perfect book boyfriend. I loved the way he fell in love with Hazel and tried so hard to do right by her. He of course, would fail and have to be taught the right way. For the most part he was open to changing his ways of thinking to be what Hazel needed him to be.
Hazel was one of the best FMC I have read about in a long time. It is not often I read a story about an older FMC, but she was fun to get to understand. She had been through so much by the time she met Craeg.
Then to have someone stalking her, and making her life so difficult. Between that and Craeg's up coming wedding, I wasn't sure this couple would get their HEA. You will need to read the book to find out if they did. Get ready to read of a few characters from Jayne's earlier books. It is delightful to read about how they are doing years later.
I can't recommend this book enough, you will not be disappointed.

As a devoted fan of Jayne Castel's Celtic romantasy books, I was eager to check out her newest historical romance series. Honor & Obsession captured my heart from the very first page!

Jayne paints a vivid picture of the beauty and brutality of medieval Scotland, bringing to life the ancient forests and windswept beaches of the rugged Isle of Mull and nearby Ulva, as well as their castles and villages.

Hazel and Creag make a delightful couple, for while they grew up under very different circumstances, they are both passionate and confident individuals who feel responsible for the welfare of others, whether as a healer or a chieftain. Hazel's compassion and forgiveness of those who wish her ill is deeply endearing, while Craeg's fierce devotion to those he loves sets him apart from his father's tyranny.

The secondary characters were just as engaging, and I'm eager to read their stories in the Rogues of Mull and Highland Scandal series.

Many thanks to Jayne Castel and BookSirens for providing me with an ARC of Honor & Obsession. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A Seer, A Healer, A New Chieftain, A Thrilling Romance
For me this story was really an enjoyable story. it was a wonderfully captivating story that totally kept me interested enough to read it in one day
I love a story with a strong-willed healer who has several emotional situations to deal with and wasn't looking for love, but when Craeg the very handsome new Chieftain happened to become injured both of their lives changed forever.
Their journey of falling in love was filled with unsure doubts, an overwhelming desirous attraction, hidden secrets, broken betrothal, a crone's prediction, families, terrifying evil villains, and so much more.
A truly exciting story that gave me thrills, many heartfelt moments, some laugh out loud moments along with a fulfilling and passionate adult romance that is certainly fan worthy.
⭐Favorite Characters: Duncan (donkey). and Faolan (the wolfhound) which added some enjoyment to the story
🤣 Favorite laugh out loud scene for me was between the villain and the fleas.
💋Mature Advisory: 3/5

Honor & Obsession by Jayne Castel is the first book in the Sons of Mull series. Craeg Maclean, a new chieftain, is thrown from his horse and finds himself at Hazel, a gifted healer’s door. Even though they are so different, there is an attraction. One he cannot forget.

As with all chieftains in the era, he has many problems including the responsibility of marrying for protection and an alliance for his people. He does get engaged to someone who is not Hazel. Watching him solve that dilemma gives the reader many insights to the characters and that moment in time.

There is enough intrigue to keep me glued to the pages. Their journey had many ups and downs and hopefully they will have a happy ending.

I enjoy reading anything by Jayne Castel. She has an insight to historical Scotland that is very entertaining and educational. There is always some facts at the end of her books that I read and find interesting.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I’m always a sucker for a historical romance, especially one set in Scotland, and Jayne Castel remains my absolute favorite for this genre. I also really enjoyed the reverse age gap in this story; it added a refreshing dynamic to the romance.

Hazel’s journey is an emotional one. Learning that she is the child of rape and that her birth father wants her dead could have completely broken her, but instead she remains steady, compassionate, and quietly strong with just enough sass to make her even more endearing. I truly loved her character and admired how she navigated such painful revelations with grace.

Craeg, on the other hand, is more impulsive and driven by duty to his clan, which deeply defines who he is. From the very beginning, though, he’s drawn to Hazel, and that pull between responsibility and desire adds great tension to their relationship.

This was a heartfelt, engaging historical romance with strong characters, emotional depth, and a setting I’ll never get tired of. Another wonderful read from Jayne Castel.

We have Craeg Leod MacLean of Moy who had just been declared a young Chieftan! He is handsome, wealthy and somewhat brash but he fears becoming his father who was ruthless and merciless!

She is everything Craeg doesn’t know he needs she calms him and helps him redirect his energy.
His mother is against their relationship and men from the Macquaries want to kill her and she has no idea why!
Siusan her mother who raised her revealed secrets that she wished she understood but has no one to ask!
Craeg is head over heals for her but is betrothed and when he finds out the truth he can no longer align himself with a cold blooded murderer!
When things take a turn in their relationship can Craeg convince Hazel their love is true and worth fighting for? Bravo it is a love for the ages! Two people who never should have met fall in love and defy all odds! Bravo

Once again, Jayne Castel writes a beautiful love story!

I have to say, I really love the fact we get to find out what happened to some of the characters in the Daughters of Mull series with this, the first book in the Sons of Mull series. This time around, we’re with the son of the lady who married her pirate. Our story begins as Lady Liza has decided it’s time to hand over the lairdship to her son Craeg. At the same time, Hazel just lost the woman she always thought of as her mother. Sadly, she also finds out she is the product of rape and her mother died during childbirth so it’s a good thing Hazel is a healer and is very good at her craft. I’ve always been attracted to medieval romances and Jayne Castel is a favorite author in the genre. The stories have wonderful plots, bigger than life characters and everything is just so well described, I feel as if I’m on the Island of Mull myself. And of course, the romance is the best part. There’s always a heartfelt sigh at the end.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Now that we have that out of the way, Ms. Castel delivers another engaging tale of the Scots! It captured my interest from the first page on many levels. I always enjoy the historical context and the author excels at descriptions of time and place to give the reader the all important sense of being there with the characters. The age gap romance was creative although it struck me as not explored in depth. How did people of this era really feel about age in relationships? Other than childbearing capacity, was it really taboo or not so notable? The four legged characters were delightful and done without giving them supernatural powers. Having interacted with these very real animal companions over a lifetime, I can attest that the behaviors portrayed are very true to life. This is a very good read with love, life, good and evil, and a donkey. What more could you ask for? Enjoy!

Honor & Obsession by Jayne Castle is an absolute gem! From the first page, I was completely immersed in a world brimming with passion, tension, and irresistible chemistry. Jayne Castle masterfully blends intrigue, romance, and high-stakes drama in a way that keeps you turning pages long into the night.

The characters are beautifully crafted—complex, compelling, and impossible not to root for. The romance is intense and heart-stopping, perfectly balanced with suspense that keeps you on edge. I was especially impressed by how the story handled themes of loyalty, trust, and desire, making the emotional moments hit even harder.

As an ARC reader, I can confidently say that this book deserves every bit of praise it will receive. If you love romance that’s passionate, thrilling, and deeply engaging, Honor & Obsession is a must-read!

Well. If you love Outlander, or historical romance in general, I can’t see why you wouldn’t enjoy this one.

Honor and Obsession is a beautiful romance that features an age gap, protector vibes, and very much an “eye for only her” dynamic. The prose was lovely and easy to read, while still feeling period-appropriate. I felt completely immersed in the timeline and the world.

I cared about the characters, and while this wasn’t my all-time favourite read, it really tugged at the heartstrings. It also delivered some incredibly sweet and vulnerable moments that stayed with me. I look forward to reading more in this series.

You know the old saying ‘Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans’? Well that saying is very true for both of our main characters for sure.

Craeg at 21, is finally taking over from his mother as chieftain, he has agreed to an advantageous marriage that will benefit his clan and hers, and everything is looking good for his family and friends. What more could a guy ask for?

Hazel on the other hand is faced with a far different situation. After living a simple life with her mother as a healer in a rustic cabin in the woods, things take a dramatic turn. A rapid illness takes her mother but not before she reveals her last secret and a warning. You are not who you thought you were and your life is in danger.

This is where fate steps in. A spooked horse, forced proximity and an instant connection take all plans off the rails! A captivating read with dynamic characters and chemistry for days! You won’t want to put it down!

This book was one that was hard to put down. Hazel and Craeg's age difference and difference in status were not the only challenges they had to overcome. The scenery is depicted so well I can see myself there. The chararacter's emotions flow from the pages. The dog, Faolan and the Donkey, Duncan were so well-written and added to making the story even better. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to others in the series. It was nice to have appearances from previous characters from other series. This book can be read alone, however, I do recommend the other books because they are fantastic.

** This book does heat up a bit and not recommended for those wanting a "clean" read.

I absolutely loved this story! I was so excited to return to Mull and the Macleans, and this book really didn't disappoint!

Hazel had such a sad start to the book, and found out a secret that rocks her to her core. Craig was struggling with choosing duty over following his heart fighting with his clansmen. Somehow, the two are a perfect fit for each other and each helps the other soothe the pain of their past. I loved that Hazel was feisty and not afraid to put herself out there, and Craeg's sheer devotion and love for Hazel was so lovely to see develop. It was great to see old friends pop back up throughout the story, and I can't wait to read Ailean's story!.

Hazel, raised by her mom in the woods, to follow in the tradition of an herbal healer was shocked by her mother’s death bed confession. Craeg, the newly installed clan chief, struggles with his lack of experience & his desire to go fight for the king. When the two meet sparks fly, but Hazel is determined to fight it because of her shameful secret and Craeg has a dark side. Good story with lots of drama and intrigue. Two people fighting against their pasts who have more in common than they realize. Great storyline with strong main characters that carry the plot well. I dinged it one star because I felt some of the language was too modern. Such as his dog was his “pal” when asked about being the new clan chief he said he was “making the adjustment” and he wasn’t “exactly enthusiastic” about it. It also had other modern terminology that threw me off at times. Other than that it’s a great book.

She legit never misses omg 😮‍💨I have to say tho I’m kind of sick and tired of everyone judging and criticizing Hazel.

Girl went through so much shit 😔😔like his mom was criticizing the relationships as if she didn’t do the same 🙄🙄🙄and even the laird loch also was saying the same shit. Like they were such hypocrites when they in fact did the same exact thing, marry for love without caring what their class difference was.

Anyways that got me heated I wouldn’t have forgiven the way people treated her if I were her she has such a big heart 🥲

Who needs sleep anyway?! I got so engrossed in this book, I struggled to put it down to sleep and work!
A wholesome historical romance set on the Isle of Mull, with an age gap where the woman is older for a change, and it really works!
You really do get caught up with Hazel and everything she goes through. And Craeg too, transitioning from warrior to Cheiftain. This book does pull at the heart strings in places, but does have a HEA

Finally, a book with an older female character than the lead male! It's good to be back on the Isle of Mull, but to be honest, it was difficult for this particular book to hold my interest. You would think that having herbs in common with Hazel it would have been different. There was mystery and drama along with the romance, so plenty to the story, and this hopefully was a one off for me.

Excellent read. This book is an excellent read. All the characters are fully developed and so is the plot. The story line moves along at a good pace. Not including a summary of the book because the publishers do a good job on that. I enjoyed the insight of life of a healer in the 1300's. Duncan was one of my favorite characters. I highly recommend this book and series. This book is a standalone not a cliff hanger. I did receive this book as an ARC for a honest and voluntary review.

I was pleasantly surprised by the range of possibilities this novel encompassed. First, the intrigue within the plot went a step further than usual, creating new venues to be explored and new readers to become engaged. I also loved the fact that the heroine is older. This, in my opinion, opens the door to a whole new group of readers. In short, the imperfections in this pair has created the perfect couple! Truly engaging!

This is an emotional, suspenseful, romance: Hazel has a lot to deal with having just lost the woman she thought was her mother and Craeg dealing with being the new Chieftain and not going off to fight for the cause.
I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next book.
I voluntarily received and reviewed an ARC copy of the book.

Honor & Obsession (Sons of Mull Book 1), my seventh Scottish Highlanders Historical Romance from author Jayne Castel. With more than 80 books published and my wife as a fan I look forward to reading more from this this author with Ruin & Redemption (Sons of Mull Book 2) due out in May of this year. “I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
