These are the facts: Our Intrepid Heroine has a unicorn following her about, she can't pronounce 'felicitations', and she's on her way to slay a dragon. A dragon that has killed an entire flock of her father’s sheep, three goats and one pig. And a frog.
Our Heroine has a sword named 'Death' and a spear called 'Doom'. She is afflicted by the presence of pesky princesses, mysterious Hooded Persons, and noble knights.
Narrated by a Narrator who is fond of detours and digressions, this is a short novella with tongue-in-cheek humour and Very Important Tips in hunting dragons that will be sure to stir the curiosity of the eager amateur dragon-hunter.
Brilliant and witty. Highly recommend to: dragon slayers (professional or otherwise); narrators; fans of The Princess Bride; certain people who had high expectations for the Princess Bride and ended up disliking it but still liked the concept; and folks who like clean, tongue-in-cheek novellas. And frogs.
I didn't write a review for this... and I'm trying to figure out why I only rated it four stars. No longer! If I remember and adore this book still so long after I read it (and I'm planning to re-read it soon...), it deserves five stars.
Age Appropriate For: 8 and up for some blood and mild violence Best for Ages: 10 and 18
I really didn’t know what I was getting into when I agreed to review this book. I knew the basic premise and that was about it. I was quickly plunged into a light fantasy with a unique feel.
Kingsely is a strong writer with a voice that is unique and doesn’t sound like she is trying to copy anyone else. Her writing was fantastic and strong, making this short little book a joy to read.
The story was told from the perspective of a narrator, which is a perspective that isn’t used very often any more, but made this story entertaining and unique. The narrator interrupted the tale a few times to give humorous tips and opinions. The narrator, though not the main character, steals the show.
The story itself, a dragon slaying story of sorts, had many twists and turns. A girl, not a knight, is after the dragon. She meets a spoiled princess, two knights, and a wise man that is not so wise. Each character adds a great dimension and more humor to the story.
If you haven’t already guessed, this is a story that is meant to be humorous, not serious. It is light and entertaining, with no great point. However, I enjoyed every minute of it just as a nice, clean, relaxing read.
I highly recommend this book for those who like unique stories of adventure, dragons, and knights.
I received this book from author in exchange for my honest review. I was under no obligation to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are entirely my own.
This was just the sort of book I needed right now: light, funny, and with a wonderfully sprightly narrator. (and a delightful twist at the end!) I'm looking forward to the second book very much.
A fun little jaunt with a very practical heroine and a cast of characters that complicate Our Intrepid Heroine’s plans. I deeply appreciate all the disregard for the fourth wall and the little surprise at the end. A fast read and very enjoyable!
I had some mixed thoughts about this book. While it was cute and somewhat enjoyable, I found the narrorator's style rather anoying, which really took away from the story to me since the narrorator talks quite a lot.
If you love the quirky, offbeat humor of The Princess Bride, then you will probably enjoy this story! I certainly did, especially the way the author continues adding more characters to the mix until the heroine's quest to kill a dragon starts to look less like a fantasy and more like a classic screwball comedy. And yet in the end, the author balances both genres (not an easy feat!) so the story's ending is satisfying in both ways.
Although I was disappointed to find that (at the time of this writing) the author has taken down the sequel (to fix some typos), I think she's doing the right thing, because the only fault I found with book 1 were the many typos. In fact I would have rated the story 4 instead of 5 stars if she hadn't already taken action to fix them. Looking forward to book 2 once it's available again!
Such good fun. With plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor, a witty protagonist, and an entertaining plot, Our Intrepid Heroine gives a nod to fairy tales and then laughingly breezes right past. It's clean and not difficult reading, though anybody with a cultivated sense of comedy will enjoy it. I definitely recommend it to fairy tale and/or fun fantasy fans. (Say that three times fast!)
