I almost didn’t come to our fifteen-year high school reunion.
But now I’m here. Snowed in.
And someone’s already dead.
It should’ve been a special reunion. Free champagne. A five-star resort. The promise of closure. Laughter. Memories. Old friends — even if they never really saw me.
But it’s all really weird. Our old prom dates are waiting tables. Our teachers are lurking in corridors. And one by one, the people I once called friends are acting like we’re back in school.
There were eight of us.
But one vanished after prom.
And someone knows what really happened that night. They invited us here for a reason.
Y'all, let me tell you about a book that had me clutching my coffee mug and triple-checking my door locks! This psychological thriller serves up everything I crave in a good revenge story – think "I Know What You Did Last Summer" meets your worst high school reunion nightmare.
Our protagonist Desi was once part of the untouchable crew known as The Westgate Eight – you know the type, those impossibly cool kids who ruled the hallways like teenage royalty. But fifteen years ago, their perfect little world shattered on prom night when Flynn Bartell turned up dead and their queen bee Modesty vanished into thin air. Talk about a graduation gift nobody wanted!
Here's where it gets juicy: every year since, the surviving members have been meeting up at this swanky resort (run by a former classmate, because apparently nobody can escape high school), basically having the world's most morbid book club meeting. But this year marks the 15th anniversary, and honey, someone's been counting down the days for all the wrong reasons.
Enter Desi, who's been dodging these reunions like they're her high school math teacher. But after coming into some inheritance money, she decides it's finally time to face her demons. Plot twist – her demons have been busy! There's a podcast called "Killer Teens" making the rounds, and guess who's the star attraction? Yep, our girl and her former squad.
I'm not gonna lie, when Desi fainted after that revelation, I felt it in my soul. I probably would've needed smelling salts and a stiff drink! The author absolutely nailed that "oh crap" moment we've all had when our past comes knocking with a sledgehammer.
What really hooked me were the unexpected connections between characters – especially the dynamics between Desi and Lenora, and that absolutely gut-punching revelation about Modesty and Desi's relationship. These weren't just thrown-in twists; they added real emotional weight to what could've been just another slasher-style thriller.
As someone who's obsessed with reunion revenge stories (seriously, "Urban Legend 3" and "Valentine" are my comfort horror movies – don't judge!), this book hit all my favorite tropes while still managing to surprise me. The pacing kept me flipping pages way past my bedtime, and I'm still thinking about that ending.
If you're looking for a thriller that combines nostalgic dread with genuine psychological depth, this one's definitely worth adding to your TBR pile. Just maybe don't read it before your own high school reunion!
Perfect for fans of: Ruth Ware, Liane Moriarty, and anyone who's ever wondered what their high school classmates are really up to these days.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was non-stop action with twists. This isn’t the typical reunion nor the typical psychological thriller reunion book. It was much better. I devoured it within hours!
It took me awhile to get pulled into this story. The early high school drill team parts didn’t grab me at first. However, once I connected I definitely wanted to keep reading to see what would happen.
The idea of a reunion where you are snowed in and cut off from the outside world is creepy enough but then once people start dying the fear factor rises quickly.
The twists, though unexpected, made sense in the story.
There were lots of characters to keep up with. It wasn’t always easy to do that. It’s told in alternating points of view between 2 of the people there. Initially I found it difficult to keep straight who was talking - maybe because they are so similar. But eventually that also flowed much easier.
Ultimately, this is a fast moving thriller that is entertaining and engaging. I’d happily read more things written by this author.
I enjoyed this so much! The premise was excellent and it made for a really twisty read! I devoured this in one sitting.
The cover is good. The woman entering a room full of balloons was great. The room seemed ominous and I thought it worked really well for the genre.
The book is very well written and flows nicely. The timeline is well signposted as are the flashback chapters. It just helped to keep everything straight in my head.
The book was mostly set at the resort but flashback chapters had four locations. It made the present day chapters very claustrophobic and it felt like you were trapped in the resort with the characters.
I liked the characters and they fit in well. It was difficult to know who to trust and every character had their own secrets. The main characters are Leona and Desiree. Their secrets and lies were excellent. I loved watching how this all unfolded.
If you want a thriller with red herrings and plenty of twists then this one is definitely for you.
I genuinely loved this book - many thanks to Zooloo's Book Tours.
It's not the first reunion-themed thriller I've read. It's not the first hotel-based thriller I've read this year. The premise is familiar - but by golly, this was well-written and such a fun read. The author's understanding of pacing was perfect: the multiple perspectives switched EXACTLY at the moment you didn't want them to, which made it so compelling. There were twists upon twists, great characterisation (people I genuinely both hated and rooted for!), and moments of absolute delight. This author is one I'm going to look out for!
Definitely one to turn into a movie!! Enjoyed this and loved the surprise reveal. Desi and Leona had a few demons to exorcise where their relationship was concerned and that was nice to see them work it out. Also nice to see things weren't predictable.
The setting was one I've seen in thrillers and horrors so not new but consistently good and nothing was obvious where the people were concerned.
School really can be hellish but this shows high school relationships in all their mean girl glory and how some people don't change whilst others move on and barely look back!! Throw in a murder or two and you've got a suspenseful whodunnit!
This thriller focuses on a high school reunion, in an isolated resort where they get snowed in and people start dying. I was hooked I love a good story that features secrets in the past getting dragged up. This book had me glued to its pages, I never saw some of the twists coming which is always a good sign. The characters were people you love to hate but with some redeeming characteristics that make you want to root for them. The pacing is steady and keeps you on your toes. I adored the multiple POVs as it really let you get into each characters head and what they were thinking. This is extremely well written and a very enjoyable read.
I do love a psychological thriller. The Reunion by Sonya Bateman looked like my type of book. The blurb just made me want to read it more.
This author certainly knows how to make an impact. Right from the start, I was gripped. Told from different perspectives and from the past and present. The story unfolds in a way that just didn't give me an option to stop reading. The short chapters just give a perfect 'one more chapter' vibe.
Oh, so twisty and crammed full of suspense, I was so immersed. As the tension built, I found myself almost holding my breath! Yet another cracking read!
This was a fun read! The twists were good and I was engrossed in the story. The pacing is good. I would recommend this! Special Thank You to Sonya Bateman,Joffe Books and Netgalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve always wondered what a reunion would be like as I’ve never been but I’m guessing this isn’t a not a normal one! Haha! I really flew through this one and I really wanted to see what happened next. The switching of characters and time can be confusing in some books but I felt this was imperative for this plot to have such depth to it. I never give spoilers but I wanted to say I think it wrapped up well too! A must read for thriller lovers!
High school reunions can be the best or the worst. For this group of friends it’s not the best. Their senior year one in their class is dead and another goes missing and is still not found. It is told in multiple timeline and POV. I enjoyed the back and forth learning about the characters as seniors and what they grew up to be. The surprises keep coming until the very end.
I absolutely love a locked door psychological thriller and even better, this one occurs at a school reunion!
This starts as it means to go on and I was instantly hooked in by the first few pages.
Something went on back at school prom and now fifteen years later, someone is out for the truth and a bit of revenge.
We follow the story, told by two different pov's and also told over two different timelines too.
This means that the story unfolds gradually as we run up to the fated prom day back then and also see how events play out in present day.
I loved the short chapters which kept me reading on and on, I couldn't put this down!
With lots of secrets being revealed as we read, it wasn't easy to work out what had happened all those years ago and who was responsible. Nor who was pulling the strings now.
It was great to see the dynamic between the group and see how things had changed since those school days.
Lots of competition and seeing who had changed for the better - and who hadn't!
Seeing things revert pretty much to how they used be back then - one of the reasons I'd never go to my own school reunion!
A great read that kept me engrossed to the end.
I can't wait to read more by this author in the future.
Excited to go to your class reunion? Proceed with caution!
This book grabs you on the very first pages! The suspense continues throughout the book and left me unsure of “who dunnit” numerous times! I would think I had it figured out and the author would add another layer! Enjoy the read and be sure to check out everyone carefully at your next high school reunion! They may not be the person you thought they were!
This story line kept you guessing til the end. Enjoyed the characters. Was a little confused with the characters but sorted it out eventually. Worth the read. So many secrets!
A twisty thriller which had me hooked straight away, I love thrillers that starts with a bang and right away I wanted to find out what was happening. Told by Desiree and Leona through then and now chapters over 6 days, with short chapters you really do follow the old one more chapter as you follow the group of friends. Full of suspense the tension builds as you keep reading with so many twists I was left guessing what happened. Such a good read highly recommend and an author I shall be reading more from. Thank you for having me and n this book tour.
Man I loved every second of this book! The minute I started this book, I knew I was in trouble. I told myself I’d just peek at a few chapters, and suddenly I was halfway through, totally invested and dying to know what everyone was hiding.
The setup is perfect: a school reunion at a fancy resort, a snowstorm that traps everyone inside, and a group of people with serious history. The way the book jumps between past and present, and between Leona and Desi’s perspectives, kept the tension high and the secrets dripping out at just the right pace.
I loved that no one felt fully trustworthy. Every time I thought I had it figured out, another twist would drop and I’d be staring at the page like, Wait—what?! Very addictive read with shocking twists!
Short chapters, multiple POVs, a wintery locked-in setting, and a pile of buried grudges? Yeah, this is thriller gold. If you love dark secrets, shifting alliances, and endings that slap, grab this one and clear your schedule.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I thought this was an OK read, but there were too many indistinct characters and no clear rationale for some of the decisions that they made. The story centers on 8 former high school teammates who get together at an isolated fancy spa for their 15 year reunion. There are immediately unexplained things happening, like other students from high school who seem to be randomly there, and a mysterious new owner of the venue. It becomes clear pretty quickly that someone has an ulterior motive for bringing them together. The book alternates between Desiree and Leona's POVs.
Desiree and Leona were likable enough characters, but I didn't think their voices were distinct enough for me to always remember whose chapter I was reading. I also found it odd that they seemed to drop their stance of being sworn enemies awfully quickly. The other characters were less likable but the dynamic between them all made sense. I enjoyed the twists (though I thought sometimes the characters were a little slow on the uptake as to what was going on). I liked that the author didn't seem to make any characters off-limits to being murdered, which amped up the suspense. The book moved at a fast pace with lots of action. There were a lot of believable red herrings, but when the villain was exposed I wasn't sure I totally understand their reasons for doing the things they did.
Overall, this was a fast paced read and I enjoyed it, but there were a few things that detracted me from liking it even more. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Usually, I'd say there is nothing more complicated than teenage friendships but it seems like there is one thing more complicated. A reunion between a group of teenage friends!
15 years after leaving high school and their fateful post prom party, the 'Westgate Eight" attend their annual reunion for the first time as a complete group. That is aside from Modesty, the group's leader who disappeared after their post prom party (although a framed picture of her is placed at the head of the table for their first meal, which is obviously completely normal and not one bit creepy!!) As they begin to arrive they notice something strange, their prom dates all seem to be at the hotel, mainly as staff, sheer coincidence?!
As strange things begin to happen, the danger they 'Westgate Eight' find themselves in forces them into revealing their secrets. Someone seems to know exactly what happened at that party and they intend to hold the group fully accountable.
This book gave 'And then there were non' vibes and also had a very 'I know what you did last summer' feel to it, which I absolutely loved. A good variety of characters, some not necessarily very likeable but well constructed none the less.
This is an immediate page turner and the plot twists just didn't stop. Some really heartbreaking topics gave the book an extra depth, as well as looking at complexities in relationships.
Fans of Lucy Foley and Freida McFadden will love this one.
Fifteen years after high school, a group of eight classmates nicknamed "The Westgate Eight" have joined together for a reunion at a luxurious but isolated resort. What should have been a boozy walk down memory lane takes quite a dark turn when the group becomes snowed in. To make matters worse, a body turns up. Back in high school, one of the original people in the group disappeared after prom and now someone is forcing them all to dredge up all of the memories again that they all would rather forget.
This is the second book by Sonya Bateman that I have read and I just know that she is going to be an auto read author! I love the multiple POVs and multiple timelines. As more secrets are revealed, the past and the present blur together. I also really loved the snowed in atmospheric setting.. super creepy. I was getting I Know What You Did Last Summer meets The Hunting Party, and I am here for it. There was an initial slow pace in the beginning but once the story starts to progress things move along quite steadily. Overall, if you love a twisty locked room atmospheric thriller, give The Reunion a try!
Thank you to NetGalley, Sonya Bateman, and Joffe Books for this ARC! Publication date is July 17th 2025.
Wow! I loved this. I think a lot of people are reluctant to go to a school reunion and this one must be the worst one ever!
The story is told mainly from the POV of Leona and Desiree, both in the current day and from events leading up to their prom many years earlier. The rest of the group of eight have been meeting each year but this is the first year that Desi has gone , via a paid trip to a resort. Of course there is a snowstorm to make this into a locked room type mystery but there is so much going on now and with shocking reveals from the past to ensure that this is no ordinary story. A true-crime podcast on events from their prom ensure that everyone is on edge with what is threatening to be revealed.
I lost count of how many twists there were here. Just as one piece of the puzzle fell into place, along comes another twist. I couldn't read it fast enough to see how things would come to a conclusion. This is the first book I have read by this author and it certainly won't be the last.
In the Reunion, Sonya Bateman brings us the story of a group of cool kids, known as the Westgate Eight, who have come together for their high school reunion. They meet up every year at an exclusive luxury resort. Their reunions revolve around the conspicuous absence of the leader of their clique, who went missing after their senior prom.
The story is told from the point of view of Desiree and Leona, partners on their high school’s ROTC drill team who grew apart when they were ready to graduate. But when a mystery unfolded at the gathering, they joined forces to expose a web of secrets and lies.
I enjoyed the dual POVs between Leona and Desiree, though their relationship felt rushed due to the sudden shift from estrangement to partnership. The characters, despite their flaws, were relatable in their struggles with high school. The other members of the Westgate Eight seemed like clichéd high school characters, and I didn’t care about them, like I did with Leona and Desiree. Despite the slow start, the mystery and the then-and-now storytelling style from Leona and Desiree kept me engaged. Once I got past the initial slow pace, I found myself unable to put the book down! The author kept me guessing until the end.
Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
An invitation to an all expenses paid relaxing stay. At a recently upgraded luxurious remote facility in the beautiful North Cascades region. The invitations are exclusive with no plus ones. Who would refuse that opportunity? What can possibly go wrong? The invited group have all accepted for their own reasons. Each having their own secrets. A tragedy years ago that ended up with a missing girl will finally have some questions answered but at what cost? A dangerous and sinister journey to find the truth. Will the answers help or just add more danger? A great book that keeps you wanting more. Secretive and strange the characters are looked at. Both in the past tense and in the present. I loved how the author alternates between the two tenses. Motives revealed and you the reader getting the full story. Secrets and lies exposed and you the reader in suspense wondering how will it end. In more tragedy? A great book If you love drama tension and consequences. A book I absolutely loved. A book I would highly recommend
I can't get enough of locked-room, snow-bound thrillers, and this one did not disappoint!
We meet a cast of characters, most of whom belonged to a high school ROTC drill team, who have been coming to this beautiful hotel in the mountains for years. But this year, their 15th anniversary, a new owner has taken over and invited each of them to come, all-expenses-paid. Even Desi, who normally shies away from these events, decides to come. Now that she has money, and can fit in with this crowd.
But...dun dun dun...they all have a secret in their past. Someone died at their high school prom. And, as they discover, there's a podcast out called Killer Teens, about the suicide (murder). Coincidence? I think not!
Someone is out for revenge, and I loved how these characters came together in a "I won't let you be the final girl (guy)" kind of way. But trust me, I won't be going to my high school reunion anytime soon!
Thank you to Joffe Books for an advance reader's copy by this new-to-me author.
The Reunion is a dark and twisty psychological thriller full of shocking surprises. Sonya Bateman is a new author for me, and if all her other thrillers are this shocking, I'm in!
A reunion of friends at a five star resort and free champagne, what could possibly go wrong here? Apparently plenty can and does. Getting snowed in is one thing, but then the bodies start turning up. Turns out someone knows what really happened that night in the past and wants revenge for it. But which one of the friends gathered is the culprit. Eight have gathered, but how many, if any will leave?
This book was so unpredictable and dark. The pace is a brisk one keeping the reader turning the pages. Though there are a lot of characters, I didn't have trouble following them all. This is a definite must for thriller lovers. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for the advanced copy
Sonya Bateman’s The Reunion is a fast-paced, twist-filled thriller that turns a simple gathering into a deadly unraveling of secrets. What begins as a long-awaited reunion quickly spirals into a tangled web of mystery and murder, with a wide cast of characters—each hiding something—thrust into the spotlight.
Bateman does an excellent job balancing multiple storylines, slowly revealing the complex relationships and hidden motives that drive the suspense. The descriptive writing brings each scene vividly to life, while the well-timed action keeps the momentum high and the tension sharp. Just when you think you know where things are headed, another secret surfaces, pulling you deeper into the chaos.
Packed with intrigue, atmosphere, and a strong sense of pacing, The Reunion is a gripping read that delivers both character depth and relentless suspense. A compelling addition to the murder mystery genre.
Sonya is a new author for me and I totally loved this 🥰🥰 I read this one in a few hours, as I couldn’t put it down. In high School, they were the West Gate eight and now they’ve all been invited on an expenses paid trip to a remote hotel in the mountains. There’s no plus ones allowed. Maybe I’ve read too many murder mysteries but that raises all sounds of alarms for me 😂😂 When they arrive at the hotel, most of the workers and other guests all went to/worked at their high school. What is happening? This was full of twists and turns, I wasn’t expecting half of them. I felt like every time I thought I had a handle on what was happening, the rug was pulled from beneath me 🤦🏻♀️😂 There’s also a podcast element in it, in that a podcast is investigating what actually happened at their high school dance. I love a podcast element 🥰🥰
Such a great book. I definitely give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ So grateful to be able to have read it 🥺🥺
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Joffe Books, for my e-ARC.
Reunions are polarizing — relished by some and dreaded by others. Much depended on what one’s status in the social hierarchy.
But this reunion is different. The attendees, seven of the former Westgate Eight, were invited to an all expenses paid 5-star luxury resort. Modesty Phelps, the leader of this group, vanished on prom night fifteen years ago. Flynn Bartell, a peripheral member, also passed away under mysterious circumstances.
If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. They will find out soon enough.
I liked how the narration alternated perspectives and shifted timelines. However, it wasn’t easy to keep track of the characters, their backstories, and their interpersonal relationships. And it just started to feel never-ending.
Eight high school friends are invited to a special reunion fifteen years after they graduated, but as they all assemble at Crystal Mesa Resort, the weather takes a turn for the worse and find themselves stuck due to a heavy snow fall, cut off from the outside world. As if this wasn't bad enough some of the high school guests are murdered. The remaining guests look back at the past and the last party they attended before going their separate ways. It seems everyone has their secrets, but all are beginning to look at every one else suspecting one of them is the killer. I enjoyed this book but I did find myself losing interest slightly in the middle before it picked up again. I am glad I read through to the end. 4.5 stars from me.
It’s a fast paced, psychological thriller based on a group of friends known as the Westgate 8.
The story is told through the POV of two of the female main characters Leona and Desiree. It’s also a dual time line story, set back in High School and now.
The plot twists in this book had me audibly gasping!! I was so invested in the whole thing.
Intensity builds from the first page all the way through to the end and speaking of the end, it fantastic.
You are kept guessing throughout and I love that. I didn’t trust anyone 😂
I can’t wait to read more from Sonya if the writing style in this book is anything to go by!
I throughly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a psychological, intense thriller!
Desiree has been invited to a luxurious reunion of her high school clique (who have a moniker everyone used. Is that a thing?) but is really dreading seeing some of her old “friends.” One of those is Leona, attempting to take a break from her man-child husband, and protecting secrets of her own. They used to be close, and what tore them apart all comes down to prom night, the night that left one dead and one missing. And whatever happened that day is a secret someone will kill to protect.
Trapped in a luxury hotel in a snowstorm with a murderer is pretty overdone, and this book didn’t add anything to the genre, sadly. Ultimately, I didn’t find the murderer’s reasons convincing and the plot was cluttered with red herrings.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the arc!
