A Cage of Magic and Darkness

Rate this book
I freed my half Incubus stepbrother from his cage… now he means to conquer me and my kingdom one sinful touch at a time...

Taelyn…

When my Fae mother married the ruler of our kingdom, moving us into the castle of Highdrift, my new stepbrother was banished.
Now a dark force is working to destroy our lands, leaving us with nothing but desolation in its wake.
When it takes both my mother and the king, I have no choice but to step into their shoes.
A kingdom needs a ruler, and I am to be it.
But there are places in the castle that have been forbidden to me, and when I come across a key in the king’s belongings, I discover a secret room in the dungeon.
I don’t know what draws me down there, but I can’t resist its pull.
It unlocks a magic that’s kept my stepbrother—and his wicked carnal enchantment—a prisoner for years.
He draws power from seduction, strength from sensuality, and, no matter how I fight it, I can’t say no.
Ruarok Loftborn doesn’t only want me. He wants the castle, and my heritage.
A heritage he believes is his alone.

Ruarok…

Half-Fae, half-Incubus, I’ve always struggled to know where I belong in the castle, even as the king’s bastard son.
But when my father brings home his new wife, and gifts me a stepsister, I’m determined to take what’s owed to me.
Except my plot is rumbled, and instead of ruling the kingdom, I’m locked inside a magic cage for a decade…
Until the day comes where the king has fallen and his magic wears off, and the princess Taelyn finds me.
I’ve always had my sights set on the king’s throne, but now Taelyn believes she’s is the rightful heir.
I will do whatever it takes to ruin her, and ensure her people no longer want to crown her queen…
I’ll corrupt the heir.

Plot: 3.5/5 • Smut: 2/5 —————> This starts off with a bang and slowly starts to drag. He’s imprisoned by his father after having thoughts of killing his new step-mother and step-sister. Thoughts. A bit dramatic, but I digress. After the death of his father and step-mother, 10 years later, he’s rescued by his step-sister. She’s trying to save the kingdom. He’s falling in love with her. It takes a while but her feelings are eventually reciprocated.
For a succubus, the smut was kind of boring. I won’t lie. There’s not much of it either. Like I said, it starts off with a bang but we only get a little more after that.

✨Arc Review✨
Thank you to the author @Marissa Farrar for sending me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

-All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“I freed my half‑Incubus stepbrother…and now he means to conquer me and my kingdom one sinful touch at a time…”

Marissa Farrar’s A Cage of Magic and Darkness is a seductive blend of dark fantasy and romantic tension, with a unique take on fae mythology. It’s fast-paced and readable, with lots of spicy moments and a standalone plot that doesn’t overstay its welcome. But while there’s a lot to enjoy—especially for fans of morally gray characters and magical court intrigue—there are also elements that could have used more depth.

✨ A Fresh Fae World

The fae world here feels distinct. Rather than rehashing the typical Seelie/Unseelie court dynamic, Farrar gives us a more grounded kingdom plagued by corruption and rot—both literal and political. It’s a setting that immediately sets the tone for a story full of secrets, betrayal, and shifting power.

🧛‍♂️ Ruarok: The Antihero With Bite

Ruarok, the half-fae/half-incubus prince, is one of the book’s strongest characters. He’s not just brooding for the sake of being broody. His bitterness is earned—ostracized by his own father for a heritage he never chose, and locked in a magical cage for a decade. Despite this, he still manages to be witty, unpredictable, and yes—deeply seductive. His moral ambiguity makes him compelling, especially as he straddles the line between vengeance and vulnerability.

🔥 Instant Chemistry

The romance between Ruarok and Taelyn kicks off quickly, with strong enemies-to-lovers vibes. If you enjoy steamy fantasy, you’ll appreciate how unapologetically spicy this book is from the start. Their banter and sexual tension are among the most entertaining parts of the story.

🏃‍♀️ Fast Pace = Rushed Development

The quick pacing makes this a breezy read, but some emotional and plot developments happen a bit too fast. Ruarok and Taelyn go from enemies to intimate fairly quickly, and side characters rarely get enough page time to become memorable. A bit more breathing room would have made their emotional arcs hit harder.

Brilliant read

A great read with quick paced action and characters you can't help but love, despite their flaws.

Ruarok is the bastard prince the king doesn't want to rule after him. He's half incubus and was brought up by the palace staff and always hoped he'd get the throne next. But when his father remarries and brings his new wife and her daughter to the castle, Ruarok considers where that puts him; until it puts him in a cage for eternity.

Taelyn came to the palace with her mother, after they'd lost her father and home to the rot. She meets Ruarok when he invites her to dance and is intrigued by her new stepbrother, though he then disappears. When their parents are both taken by the rot she steps up to the role of ruler, and on finding a key is drawn to unlock Ruarok's cage.

Taelyn and Ruarok are two very different characters, she's complete innocence, and he's …. not. But together they work well. She's wanting to save the kingdom and so is he, even if it's with different intentions, but along the way they discover plenty about themselves as well as each other.

A great dark fantasy romance with fae, incubus, and monsters, secrets, schemes, romance, steam and some nice twists; I couldn't put this book down and would recommend.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review.

This is the story of Taelyn and Ruarok. Tayln's mother is a Fae. one day she married the ruler of the kingdom they loved in. Moved them to the castle of Highdrift and her new stepbrother was banished No she can't help but notice there is a dark force working to destroy the lands and leaving nothing but desolation behind. However, she sure never thought she would have to step into her mom and stepfather's shoes and rule. Nor did she expect to explore rooms of the castle she was forbidden to go near, and discover the magic that's kept her stepbrother and all his wicked carnal ways a prisoner for all these years. He is a man who is full of seduction, sensuality and a person that no woman could resist if he had his sites set on you. But, he has more in mind than she is expecting. He wants the kingdom that he believes is rightfully his and his alone. Ruarok has spent a decade locked in a cage. All he has ever wanted is his fathers throne and now Taelyn has taken what is rightfully his in his eyes. She won't stand in his way. He won't allow it and will ruin he rif it is the last thing he does. His plan is to corrupt the heir.
This was a great read. It has is suspense and smoking hot moments between these two. It has twists and turn and will keep you turning the pages.

This story is a wonderful take on fae. It's a fast paced, easy read as a stand alone.
Ruarok is a fae/incubus and is hated by his father for the half that isn't fae. He's a laid back guy who does what he wants as really anyone would who is ousted just for being themselves. Until that is his father marries a fae queen and with her comes her daughter.
Sparks shine. *insert dreamy scene*. Swiftly afterwards the king imprisoned Ruarok in a cage, where he spends a decade where life moves on.
Taelyn finds him after the plague of rot has crippled part of the kingdom and unleashes him. She's a beautiful soul who wishes to rid the kingdom of this rot. And on the way to figuring it out, Ruarok tries to figure her out and how to take back his role as should be king.
It's spicy from the get go. And the ending was absolutely wonderful.

Arc Review

Firstly, I have enjoyed many of Marissa’s ebooks and this too is a wonder.

I will start with Marissa explicitly describing “ Content Explanation” clearly in bold text. Stating of dubious moments etc.

This all comes down to -
*heritage
*Incubi
*Fae
*Kingdom in ruin, kingdoms lost
*Step siblings 🫢
*Survival / Sacrifice @ what cost?
*who will surrender to save the Kingdom? Prince Ruarok or Princess Taelyn?

Is the answer Love?

This is a read full of lust 😉🔥🔥🔥. Incubi’s - need I say more. It has been a while since I read Paranormal. Marissa has brought forth on what I have missed.
This was a beautiful read in its own entirety. Incubus / Fae, mixed races. It was action packed. Deceleration of Love was here.

Dare to enter the vortex of Paranormal life? Definitely 18++++ read. Extremely sexual and explicit.

Hence Incubi

ATE THIS UP!
once I started this book I couldn't stop reading!

Right off the bat this book is spicy! which i didn’t expect so soon 🤣
I do love a fae fantasy with spice though...and this was just that!

This is the first step sibling romance I've read, so i wasnt sure if id enjoy it or be weirded out by it. But honestly I loved it!

I really loved Ruarok and Taelyn, even though they were step siblings (sharing zero blood I must add) i was definitely rooting for them. Ruarok though ugh! my favourite character in this book! A tall dark and handsome mmc we all dream about... minus the guards scene 🙈

I enjoyed this book from the spicy start to the heartwarming end ahh 🥰

*Also I must add I read and reviewed of my own accord. I saw this book on booktok and my intrigue got the best of me*

I really enjoyed this book! 🖤 It was fast paced and easy to follow!

The story is somewhat predictable but still very enjoyable!

The plot & 🌶️ spice of the story are on point!

The characters are likeable from the first page and the author did a good job on giving us some of their back story in little snippets throughout the book!

The MMC starts this book on a very steamy scene!! 🍆💋🖤 - He is half incubus & I was hooked from the first line!!

The FMC is a young girl who starts off naive but grows in strength throughout the story! 🧚 She is Fae! And her magical abilities are limited! But that doesn’t stop her!!

I thoroughly enjoy Marissa Farrar Books - she is an incredible author! ❤️ xxx

A deliciously spicy, fast paced, dark enemies to lovers fantasy I couldn’t stop reading! Ruarok Loftborn, the stepbrother who has been kept in an enchanted prison in the dungeons, is half-Fae and half-Incubus. Taelyn, who after the rot plague has crept its way into the kingdom and she loses her mother and stepfather. Pulled by something magnetic she finds a key and sets Ruarok free. Will he ruin her and take the throne, or will they rule together? The character and world development were spot on, as with any Farrar tale.

Ruarok is half Fae and half Incubus and is the stepbrother of Taelyn, who is also Fae. Ruarok's father is the King, and Taelyn's mother is his new Queen. When a dark force has taken out the King and Queen, things take some interesting and magical turns. A hidden key takes Taelyn to Ruarok and sets him free. A Cage of Magic and Darkness is an enemies to lovers, forbidden, dark romance with a page turning storyline, magic, mystery, intriguing characters, family drama, steam, and unexpected twists that make this a great read. I look forward to reading more books in the future by this very talented author. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

👏right 👏off 👏the 👏bat!!👏 oooof 🥵 if you are looking for a tension filled fantasy romance this one is a 10 outa 10! It’s a great stand alone that gives you a great taste at the author’s signature style of writing. I love everything she writes but this one was a good refresher from the Verona falls universe if you are someone like me that enjoys multiple genres 🤣 as always this book comes with all the spice so buckle up and enjoy the ride 💅.

The slow burn was not burning. It was way too long for the length of the book, and there was almost no banter or emotions shown, only lust, plots and manipulation. Once he confessed, it sounded a bit like "you're so mature for your age" and I didn't feel it. Also the "power of love will compell you" bit was a bit too easy for me. I didn't like it in Harry Pooter when I was a teenager and I still don't like it at 35.

The story had potential, though.

Ruarke starts out as a total player who clearly wants one thing…then Taelyn comes into the picture and he can’t think of anything else. Even though Ruarke thinks he’s out for revenge you can totally tell he wants Taelyn, true mates if you ask me. As usual Marissa nailed it with this story! I hadn’t read any fantasy by her yet, but I’ll definitely be going back for those now!.

The author created a fascinating world and intriguing protagonists. It’s a bit of a slow burn between the step-siblings. The author conveyed the attraction between Taelyn and Ruarok without overstating it. The plot isn’t that complicated but the world that the author created is enchanting. I’ve read other books from this author and her stories are always engaging! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily chose to review it.

I genuinely didn’t expect to enjoy it this much. I’m stuck in that tragic phase of a reading slump where I either cling to my comfort reads or devour guilty pleasures like cheap candy.. It’s not exactly the strongest book out there, but to be fair, it had a solid, surprisingly gripping story. I might be slightly obsessed with Rourok (send help), and Taelyn... well, she held up her end of the plot. I went in expecting “meh” and came out emotionally compromised.

I believe this is my first fantasy book by this author. I'm very much familiar with her contemporary work and I'm glad her style is very much the same. The plot was ok, it did drive the characters in their development. The story was quite entertaining and a nice little change from this author.

Fantasy, dark romance, fae, step-siblings, enimies to lovers, and more...
The story moved quickly, so it was easy to follow.
There was drama, politics, some emotional moments, tension, and spice.
I enjoyed the way Taelyn and Ruarok's relationship unfolded. The enimies to lovers, slow burn romance.
Overall, I think it was an enjoyable read.

Okay so way back in the day I used to read romantasy. Urban and paranormal romance. But it’s been a while. This book ….it is definitely bringing me back into the genre. The MMC and FMC are perfect and the story kept me turning pages all day. Luckily I was off work when I received the ARC because I could not put it down. Marissa Farrar is an author that is on my automatic read list. Love everything she puts out.

REVIEW
Welcome to Darkness…Well, for Ruarok…

Ruarok knows his father hates him; he isn’t like his father.
He is half fae, half incubus… But it’s my father’s fault for lying with my mother.

My father has taken a new queen. She has the perfect Fae daughter who thinks to take my kingdom…Only she isn’t horrible, and it begins to show as everything is taken away.

A dark force takes the king and queen, and she finds me in the dungeon… She has the key to free me, then I will make my move.

Taelyn knew she should not let Ruarok out… But he is something more, something to her. Can they stop the darkness before it’s too late?

Action, Mystery, and HOTNESS are all in this one! This author never disappoints, always has well-written, intense stories.
