I’m not sure how to review this. It’s a very short book only 108 pages - so readable in one session at a push although I'd not recommend doing it that way - and is a compilation of articles that the author wrote for Hortus gardening magazine covering each season through the year. Whilst chapters are in order - winter, spring etc.- it sometimes isn’t immediately obvious in the chapter. It regularly refers to the ‘Duchess’ from the title but who she actually is and what her relationship to the author is never explained and having read the book now I’m still none the wiser. It doesn’t really give gardening tips just thoughts aligned to the author slightly strange way of thinking about the garden throughout the year and then putting it into words. There is a second book now so I just might have to give that a go if only to see whether I’m any the wiser as to the author and his relationship with the Duchess.

Fabulous gloomy January read. Laugh-out-loud at many points as well as of interest to anyone who gardens. The Duchess, whoever she may be, will live long in my memory.
