Buckingham's first novel is an atmospheric caper tale set among the lush islands of Indonesia. . . Great fun for general-fiction readers with a taste for comic adventure."" --Booklist

This book could have been so interesting: the story takes place in an exotic destination (Indonesia), with a very different culture but with a Westerner as the main character; it had many ingredients for a good recipe...

Instead, it was boring and disappointing; not much was happening, and some of the things the main character did were really unbelievable, also there were characters that had nothing to add to the story and it is not clear why they are in the book in the first place; it also has a more than disappointing ending.

This is an enjoyable and compelling story. The local flavor and history are very nice touches. The main character wasn't enough of a character for my tastes; he was merely borne along with the events and occasionally reacting to them. The supporting characters were all much more interesting. A good read overall.
