A house of secrets. A legacy of silence. A love that refuses to be denied.
When Lady Bridget McConnell arrives at Alastair Court, she expects nothing more than a somber house party. Instead, she finds the shadows of a buried conspiracy, a cryptic journal, and a murder that no one seems eager to solve. The last man she wants to rely on is Captain Thomas Grenville, the brooding war hero whose loyalty is rivaled only by the walls he keeps around his heart.
Thomas has his own reasons for coming to Northumberland, reasons he cannot share with anyone—not even the woman who challenges him at every turn. But when their search for answers draws them into a dangerous game with the remnants of the Order, Bridget and Thomas must confront more than old secrets. They must confront themselves.
As tension at Alastair Court rises, the truth edges closer. Every clue unearths betrayals long buried, and every look between them deepens a connection neither expected. But the closer they come to justice, and to each other, the harder it is to separate duty from desire.
Can love survive when the truth is finally revealed? Or will the sins of the past demand more than they can give?

Lady Bridget has come from Scotland to England, bearing the burden of marrying well. She will never be a quiet wife and hardly thinks she can find an Englishman to light her soul on fire. That is, until she meets Captain Thomas. Thrust together at Alastair Court for a house party, Bridget never expected to be entangled in a mystery. As the clues mount and secrets are revealed, Bridget’s feelings for Thomas turn from attraction to desire to love. Can Bridget find the bridge between duty and love?
A Redemption for the Baron is a scintillating historical romance with enchanting characters and a fair bit of intrigue. This is book three in the Barrington’s Brigade series. The premise is a homage to one of my favorite mystery tropes: a murder happens at a house party. The characters are vibrant with tons of personality. Bridget and Thomas are opposites with plenty of enemies to lovers banter to make this a page-turner. I read late into the night to see what was going to happen next.
Ruth A. Casie is a prolific historical romance author whose writing style ticks all the boxes for me. Lush world-building, emotional narration, historically accurate, undercurrent of mystery and intrigue, opposites attract romance, characters that leap from the pages and into your, a murder to solve, and a triumphant ending. Trust me, you’ll want to read A Redemption for the Baron.
This book had me hooked from the first chapter. What I thought would be a quiet, slow-burn historical romance turned out to be a layered, atmospheric mystery full of secrets, tension, and emotional depth.
Lady Bridget McConnell arrives at Alastair Court expecting a dull country gathering and instead walks straight into a storm of lies, hidden motives, and one very frustratingly magnetic war hero. Captain Thomas Grenville is brooding, guarded, and carrying more secrets than anyone else in the house—which, as it turns out, is saying a lot. Their dynamic is everything I love in a historical romance: sharp banter, mutual suspicion, and an undeniable pull that keeps tightening as the mystery unfolds.
The writing captures that perfect gothic feel—cold halls, whispered rumors, candlelight secrets—but it never drags. Every chapter reveals another piece of the puzzle, and I found myself just as invested in the unraveling conspiracy as in Bridget and Thomas’s slow, careful dance toward each other. The chemistry between them simmers beautifully beneath all the danger and restraint, making the emotional payoff at the end feel earned.
If you like your historical romance with atmosphere, intrigue, and just the right touch of angst, this one’s a winner. Perfect for a rainy weekend read with a blanket and a cup of tea.

Captain Thomas Grenville had his hands full with Lady Bridget from the moment he set eyes on her. He quickly learned that she was capable of making her own decisions and is reluctant to accept help from strangers. Nevertheless, the impact they have on each other is far deeper than they originally anticipated. Thomas is on a mission, and whereas most ladies would have been a distraction, Thomas discovers that Bridget thinks quickly on her feet, is observant, and has life experiences that make her the perfect partner in solving a crime. I enjoyed the interaction between Bridget and Thomas, as well as the relationship that developed between them. However, I found the buildup of tension forced and at times frustrating. It seemed that seeds of doubt were being sown where there were no logical reasons, supposedly making everyone a suspect. The actual crime would have been enough drama without the innuendos that went before it. Nevertheless, the story comes to a successful conclusion and the perpetrators receive their just reward. However, even then I was left feeling puzzled at Bridget and Thomas's fathers' involvement in the plot, as it did not seem to serve any real purpose. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The third book in the series & whilst it could be read on its own I’d recommend reading in order. I really liked Thomas & Bridget who locked horns from their first meeting when he helped her free her carriage which was stuck in mud. Whilst there was chemistry between them it didn’t sizzle. There’s plenty of mystery, intrigue & a murder. There were also twists & turns I didn’t see coming. The characters have depth & the pace is good, a well written entertaining book I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
Lady Bridget is on her way to a house party hosted by a friend when she meets Thomas, a gentleman who stops to help her and her coachman when the coach she is traveling in gets bogged down due to rain and mud. Bridget continues on her journey and is surprised to meet Thomas again as he was invited to same party as a guest of her friend’s spouse. Both Bridget and Thomas are seeking spouses but Bridget’s fierce independence and Thomas’s secrets will cause problems for them to overcome. After the host of the party is murdered under suspicious circumstances, Bridget and Thomas along with the magistrate and other guests attempt to investigate and unmask the killer. Of course, as they are going through the investigation they spend more time together and soon neither of them is able to deny their attraction to the other . An action packed, slow burn tale with a HEA for the main characters. Would have liked more steam but it was an enjoyable read. I received an ARC from NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
A seemingly innocuous house party at Alister Court turns into the scene of a murder. Bridget is determined to find the murderer of her friend's husband, Alister. Captain Thomas Greenville is a member of Barrington's Brigade. He also must discover the murderer. Bridget and Thomas work as a team, bonding to find answers. Encrypted papers, murder and a threat to the Crown, are all connected to the Order of Shadows. This book does not focus so much on the romance, but the twists and turns of finding a murderer. Some passionate kisses. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book from NetGalley.
This historical romance is part of a series centered around the men who work in secret to keep the shadows from gaining dangerous influence. This is also a murder/mystery and I certainly didn't guess who the killer was. There are several suspects, and a few red herrings that make it difficult. Our heroine is not at all happy with going to England. That definitely affects her attitude. We get a very interesting story that will keep you guessing. The sparks fly between our lead characters to assure us of a sweet romance. Good fun.
Ruth A. Casie has done it again. It was impossible to put down Redemption for the Baron…. It is now wee hour of the morning. Read in one sitting, I could not stop. I feel the power of Scotland and England. I feel the struggle of those believing in their way as the only way. I feel the power of hate, jealousy and greed. I feel the power of love. And I am left with history, knowledge, the strength of one woman and one man and family and values. Powerful. Unforgettable. Read it.
This was a well written. fast paced, descriptive historical. Thomas is a captain, recovering from PTSD and taking up the mantle of baron, to which he deals with all the petty overseeing that goes with land and tenant management. He meets the prickly Scottish lady Bridget. They are both proud. strong willed people with murder on their doorstep.
This book had me hooked from the first chapter. What I thought would be a quiet, slow-burn historical romance turned out to be a layered, atmospheric mystery full of secrets, tension, and emotional depth.
I have truly enjoyed all of the Barrington's Brigade books but this one is very special. The slow burn love story between Thomas & Bridget is so good, interwoven with an intriguing mystery plot, it sucked me right in and I couldn't put it down until I finished!
