The Moments We Didn't Waste

Rate this book
Allen was the man of Hayley’s dreams. They were together for fourteen perfect years before she woke with him cold in her arms. Nothing was the same after that, and the only way Hayley learned to cope was by throwing herself into her business and ensuring her teenage son, Liam, was set for his last years of high school and life afterward.
Everything since Allen’s death has been the same monotonous chores every day, until Hayley meets Whitley, who peels her off the asphalt when she falls during a run. To show her thanks, she invites him and his friend Casey to dinner. Hayley is drawn to both of them, but Casey is dying, and Hayley is struggling to reconcile her feelings for him and Whitley.

What started as an unlikely friendship turned into something more, something deeper, and something that wouldn’t be wholly understood in 'polite' society.

I was lucky enough to be apart of the ARC team for this, so thank you Nikki and Beth at Wings & Words for the opportunity.

Wow! just wow. This was a phenomenal read through and through. I truly loved this book, it had me hooked from the get go. I bonded with the characters and needed to know how their stories played out.

Now this isn't a happy read, it is full of emotions, love, loss, grief and hurt. You will laugh and you wil cry, you will wish for for time when the inevitable comes. The themes of this are hard, but Nikki wrote them beautifully.

Now I am going to hide in bed and eat chocolate whilst mouring the amazing characters of this book!

Thank You Nikki for this beautiful book! ❤️

What a beautiful read 😍. It was devastating yet the story was full of love. Two souls experience loss individually, come together and experience loss together, only to heal together. Such a beautiful story.

The Moments We Didn’t Waste wrecked me in the best way 😭
It’s slow, real, and full of that soft heartbreak energy — the kind that makes you think about every “what if” in your life.
The dynamic between the characters while they go through grief is written perfectly.

My god this book wrecked me.
A bittersweet tale of grief, love, afterlife and new beginnings, I only stopped reading because I already had plans today, otherwise I'd have finished it far quicker than the 24 hours it took me to devour.
I don't often reread books but I feel I'm going to need to revisit Hayley, Liam, Whitley and Casey again quite soon.
Utterly beautifully written, there is no escaping the hold this book will have you in. This will stay with me for a while.

Thank you to Beth and the rest of the Wings and Words community for the free ARC copy of this beautiful book! I'm leaving this review voluntarily. 😊

This book absolutely broke me, in the most beautiful way imaginable. This book wasn’t just “emotional at times.” It was deeply, overwhelmingly sorrowful through huge parts of the story, and I cried so much more than I ever expected to. There were moments where it genuinely hurt to keep reading because my chest felt tight and my heart was aching but I couldn’t stop, because it was so incredibly good.

The author doesn’t shy away from the heavy, painful parts of love and life. Instead, she leans into them with such honesty that it’s impossible not to feel every single emotion alongside the characters. Their struggles, their fears, their love, their losses, it all hit me right in the heart. It felt raw, real and devastating in a way that made me stop and just breathe before I turned the page.

But that’s exactly why I loved this book so much.
It doesn’t give you an easy story.
It gives you a beautiful one, one that hurts because it matters.

I grew so attached to the characters that every heartbreaking moment felt personal. The grief, the helplessness, the hope that flickers even in the darkest scenes… it was all written with such tenderness that even when I was crying my eyes out, I still felt grateful for the experience. There’s something powerful about a story that can break you and heal you at the same time.

Even when it was painfully sad, I couldn’t look away. The writing is stunning, the emotional depth is intense, and the way the story unfolds is unforgettable. This is one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it. The kind you keep thinking about because it touched something deep inside you.

Yes, it hurt.
Yes, I cried,  a lot.
But I absolutely loved it.
And I’m so glad I read it.

I don’t normally write long reviews, but this story touched me so deeply that I felt compelled to share my thoughts.

This review is voluntary!

Thank you so much Nikki and the Wings & Words community for letting me be a part of the team. ❤️🌺

The Moment We Didn’t Waste is an emotional, beautifully written story that blends heartbreak, healing, and hope in a way that feels both raw and genuine. From the first chapter, the author pulls you into the characters’ inner worlds—their pain, their longing, and the quiet strength that carries them through some incredibly heavy moments.
The relationship at the heart of the book is tender and messy in the best way. You feel every misstep and every moment of connection, and the chemistry between the characters is wonderfully grounded. The pacing is steady, letting the emotional beats breathe without dragging, and the writing itself has a softness that makes even the hardest scenes resonate.
If anything, a few plot threads could have gone deeper or been tied up more tightly, but overall the story delivers a satisfying mix of angst, vulnerability, and growth.
If you enjoy character-driven romances with emotional depth and a hopeful arc, The Moment We Didn’t Break is a solid, heartfelt 4-star read.

This is one of those books that quietly gets under your skin and stays there long after you’ve turned the last page.
From the very beginning, I was completely drawn into the emotions of this story. The characters feel so real and imperfect in the best way. They make mistakes, they grow, they love hard, and they hurt deeply.

The author captures all the little pieces of being human: missed chances, second chances, regret, hope, and the small moments that end up meaning everything.
The writing is beautiful without ever feeling overdone. There are so many lines that made me stop and just feel for a second.

The relationships in this book, the romantic, are layered and meaningful, and I loved watching them evolve.

It’s heartfelt, tender, and at times absolutely heartbreaking, but it never loses its thread of hope.

This is the kind of story that makes you think about your own life and the moments you hold close. I laughed, I teared up, and I didn’t want it to end.
If you love emotional, character-driven stories that feel honest and raw, The Moments We Didn’t Waste is absolutely worth the read. I’m so glad I didn’t miss this one. 💕

This book was a great read, so emotional while also being so funny. The writing was very easy to get into and stay hooked. My only reason for this not being five stars was that, in my opinion, a bit of the dialogue read as not quite realistic, especially when they were just getting to know each other. Regardless, I loved this book and its characters, and would definitely recommend checking it out! Thank you to the author and Wings & Words Arc community for my copy of this book!

This was such a lovely book given what its about. It was very humbling and was proud that I didn't cry at every chapter. It was so beautifully written and definitely requires a strong mind and box of tissues to get through it. Definitely worth a read if you want a good cry. It could have ended at so many different points but it was a book that just kept on giving and I love how it gave you a full ending.

Then as the result of a grief meltdown she meets Whitley and Casey. Can she find love again with a dying man? With a broken man?

“—that’s ok. I like to fix broken things.”

I have never cried so much in such a short period of time.

Hayley is a 34-year-old widow who has lost the very essence of her soul when her husband Allen died. After barely pulling herself out of her depression, she threw herself into the only two things she had left. Her 16-year-old son, Liam, and sourdough.

Something extraordinary happens though. Whether you call it magic, divine intervention, or spirits of the past pulling the threads of fate into place, Hayley finds herself in the presence of another traumatized soul.

Whitley has come to care for his dying friend Casey, and the three of them navigate the tragedy of life, death, and grief together in the most profoundly beautiful way. Misery loves company, and the company here is great! Although Wilbur has sewn together a tapestry of devastation, there are threads of comedic relief, relatable moments, and so much LOVE!

I honestly don’t even know where to begin with this book. I absolutely loved it! It’s a beautifully written story with an incredible plot and, as a bonus, some seriously hot spice. I fell in love with these characters so deeply that they felt like my best friends. I was so emotionally invested that I spent about 80% of the book in tears, completely sobbing my heart out.
Our FMC, Hayley, has suffered a devastating loss, the sudden passing of her husband in his sleep. Her world, and that of her son Liam, is completely shattered. Hayley’s journey through grief is raw and heartbreaking, with her just barely keeping her head above water.
Then enters our wonderful MMC, Whitley, who quite literally comes to the rescue after thinking someone is being “unalived” in Hayley’s house during one of her emotional meltdowns. That chaotic first meeting turns out to be the start of something truly special.
We’re soon introduced to Whitley’s friend Casey, who is facing terminal brain cancer. The story weaves together themes of pain, grief, heartbreak, love, bisexual representation, and mental health in such a meaningful way. It’s heavy, yes, but wow what an incredible and unforgettable read.
I devoured this book in just two sittings, trying not to soak the pages with my tears. These characters and their stories will stay with me forever.
Nikki Wilbur is now officially on my auto-buy list, and I can’t wait to read more from her.
Huge thanks to Beth at Wings and Words for the opportunity to read this amazing book!

Nikki Wilbur crumbled up my heart, kissed it, and put it back in my chest with this one.

Hayley, a 34-year old widow, is raising her son while managing the loss of her husband, Allen-the other half of her soul. Hayley and Allen has a love and marriage that fairytales were inspired by, until he went and died on her.

She loses herself, pouring everything she has left into her son and her sourdough starter, all the while plagued by the whispering touches of her lost love. Until one day, a man barges into her house and steals her heart.

Whitley is new in town, moving in down the street to care for his dying friend, Casey. The three find comfort and solace in their mingling shadows, surrounding themselves in dark humor and food. Unexpecting feelings arise in the wake of overwhelming grief, morphing into a journey of healing, growth, and maybe love?

The banter had me giggling and kicking my feet, and then tears were falling in buckets. The Moments We Didn't Waste is a heart-breaking and beautiful story of tragedy, grief, and love. I can't recommend this book enough. Make sure you have your tissues handy. You're going to need them.

If you are looking to be totally and completely wrecked by a story but end up with that happy/sad feeling you get when the main characters get what they finally need and deserve at the end, then this is the book for you.

This is a story of grief and finding the silver lining when everything is dark, or making your own silver lining. Grief of people lost, grief of a life not lived, grief of lives that were cut too short, grief of being left behind, grief of getting shit cards handed in life. The sadness that is portrayed and the feelings these characters go through is written so heartbreakingly well. You are taken through an emotional roller coaster of a ride that ends in an outcome that fills your heart with happiness.

This author does an amazing job playing with the concept of the afterlife and where we go once we have left our earthly bodies. She talks about remembering those who have passed and how we might feel them in ways we can’t explain. There is a paranormal aspect that moves the story along in a way that makes you contemplate the things that happen in life that leads you down certain paths. I loved it.

Truly made me an emotional wreck in the best way possible.

Damn. This book. I am just broken.
Wow.

I felt the loss in this book to my very core as I lost someone I loved just as much (not a husband, but a major loss, is a major loss). So this touched me in ways I can't even express. I didnt sleep until I finished it. I couldn't put it down. Just 👌😭😭😭. Amazing.

Thank you SO much Beth from wings and words for finding this book. This one is a permanent feature for me now.

The book starts with Hailey - a 34 year old. Who lost the love of her life and is now a widow - with a son.

Somehow along the way of raising a 16 year old son and a sourdough business she magically falls upon Whitley - someone else who is as traumatised as she is. As though magically connected.

Although their traumas are at different stages they both are experiencing the same thing - Loss. As Whitley is caring for his dying best friend *enter Casey* and together all 3 of them experience and travel the roads or loss, grief, life, death and tragedy.

Although it is a sad read (in an amazing way) Nikki filters it with laughs, overwhelming (and welcomed) amounts of love & majorly relatable moments.

A tender, quietly devastating story about love, loss, and the courage to open your heart again.

The Moments We Didn’t Waste follows two grieving souls learning how to live in the aftermath of the unthinkable—how to hold on to the love that shaped them while making space for something new.

It’s a novel about found family, the people who show up when the world falls apart, and the small, stubborn moments of hope that pull us forward. Nikki Wilbur captures the ache of remembering, the fear of forgetting, and the beauty of choosing to love again without erasing the past.

A gentle reminder that healing isn’t about moving on—it’s about not wasting the moments we’re given.

Bad beginnings, love, grief and loss and maybe love again.

This story makes me know why I love Indie authors. It has everything from loneliness to pain, grief to loss and finding love over and over. If we could all be so lucky. Haley and Liam lose Allen when he dies in his sleep. The grief is so profound it pulls you into it and you want to scream with them. She meets Whitley and then Casey and finds something she never expected, but grief is always waiting. What a beautiful story that will make you want to take a chance on love again.
