The Launch

Rate this book
If an author throws a party in the forest and no one is around to hear him scream, does he make a sound?

Five years after Graham Zanella’s deadly art gala, Cole Sloane is ready for a fresh start. He’s landed a book deal for his tell-all memoir about the night in question, and he’s ready to celebrate it at his book launch party with those closest to him, including a quirky photographer he fell hard and fast for half a decade ago. The only problem? She isn’t ready for a relationship, or rather, doesn’t believe she deserves one.

Luna Monroe is deep into the throes of motherhood when she reunites with Cole, and although he makes her heart flutter in all the ways she absolutely cannot control, she’s determined to keep him at arm’s length. Her son’s well-being is her top priority, not Cole Sloane’s buff new arms. That’s why when she agrees to spend a week with him and the gang at Solstice Blackwood’s cabin in preparation for Cole’s upcoming party, she tells herself and everyone around her they are just friends.

However, when Sol decides to kick off the trip with a harmless ghost story, Cole and Luna are forced to deal with more than just their feelings. What starts as an idyllic getaway quickly turns south when unexplainable things begin to unfold, making them question their core beliefs. Is someone watching them, or is something haunting them?

Whatever it is, they need to stop it before the launch party. After all, no book is worth dying for . . . is it?

The Launch

~ Amy Tackett

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Launch. The sequel you didn’t know you needed until you read it – then it grabs hold and refuses to let go. The Launch picks up right where The Gala left off and once you dive in, this story will live rent-free in your mind long after the final page.

After living the last five years locked up in prison for the murder of Graham Zanella, Cole Sloane (MMC) is stepping back into a world still clueless as to what really happened – or why. Now that he’s free, his long-delayed release of The Great Chase is about to shed light on the truth. Waiting to pick him up, Luna Monroe (FMC). The two clicked at The Gala and she’s spent the last five years visiting Cole longing for his release…..so why the nerves?

Cole’s former cellmate and crazy rock star, Solstice Blackwood – aka Sol – has graciously opened up his secluded lakeside cabin in the woods for the book release party. Cole, Luna and her son Jaxson pack up to spend a week at the cabin to relax before the party. Sol being Sol, starts the first night off with a bonfire and ghost story that creeps Luna out but reassuring her it’s just a story, Cole can’t shake feelings that having his release party here may be a bad idea. As friend and co-worker Greyson shows up at the cabin and discovers bones in the silverware drawer leaving Luna to wonder if that ghost story was really just a story, a PR stunt or something more.

The launch party starts out as a night of celebration quickly spiraling into something far more sinister blurring the lines between reality and nightmare, making the chaos of The Gala look tame. Will ghosts come back to haunt Cole and take more from him? Or will Cole be able to push past the nightmares and love again?

Tackett has that rare gift for creating a cast of characters that breathe right off the page. Whether it be main characters or supporting, they are raw, real and vulnerable. Her cast of characters are grounded in both personal trauma and messy, hopeful pursuits of healing. These aren’t just characters written onto a page you turn – they are people you root for, connect with and want to protect.

With unrelenting momentum, The Launch surges forward like a runaway train with its fast pacing. Every chapter ramps up the intensity, weaving together themes of psychological thriller, horror and religion with remarkable finesse. Tackett doesn’t just include religion as a background element – she thoughtfully explores it, handling the topic with care and complexity.

Twists? Constant! Tension? Unbearable at times – but totally in the best way. And yes, there are some surprising moments that will make you cringe, but the payoff is worth every single gasp!

The Launch is a masterpiece when it comes to smooth transitioning from topic to topic, chapter to chapter. Often disturbingly real imagery, Tackett immerses her readers in a world that feels both cinematic and terrifying. Regardless of whether you are a die-hard horror fan or not, there is no denying Tackett’s skill at pulling off a multi-genre novel – genres such as psychological thriller/horror and religion that typically don’t mesh together all too well – is flawless.

If you haven’t read The Gala, start there – but don’t take too long to get it read as The Launch will be waiting for you to solve the mysteries that revolve around the chaos of ghost stories and the release party! I can’t wait to read your reviews!

I would like to thank Amy Tackett for allowing me the opportunity to Alpha/Beta/ARC for The Launch. As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation by the author or publisher, current or future, for a fair and honest review.

I. AM. SHOOK. How Amy manages to create such beautiful and disturbing stories is beyond me. There was romance, comedy, suspense, skin crawling horror, tears (from me), and beautiful healing woven throughout. I will say I found it to be a slow start, but it was definitely a strong finish. I also had a hard time connecting with the characters this time around because of the Christian element; however, by the ending I think it played such a crucial role in the healing of everybody who was affected by yet another messed up tragedy (because did y’all read the first messed up tragedy? Goodness). Definitely read the first book, The Gala, to know more about the characters and their backstory; however, I think I think this could also be read as a standalone. But why would you want to do that? It’s Amy Tackett. Read her books.

Not only does Amy know how to write a book that is disturbing and grotesque but she knows how to do it including the goodness of God. Her novels show how the world can be on fire and yet God is the water.

This book had me on my fracking edge of my seat. I was angry. I was sad. I was beaming with light with how God moved Cole, Luna & Jax. I absolutely loved this story.

thank you so much Amy for the ARC. 🩷

I received an arc copy of this book from the author! ✨

Y’all!!!! 😍😳😅😵‍💫 What the helly?
This book was so good!! I was on the edge of my seat for the last 50% of the book! This would make an amazing movie in my opinion and I’d be the first one at the theater.

Amy has a way of making you feel all the warm and fuzzy feelings while simultaneously traumatizing you and making you feel very uncomfortable at the same time! 😂 I honestly do not know how she does it!

This is the PERFECT fall read full of a creepy ghost story, a party gone wrong and believing that God has us no matter the circumstances.

I loved that Amy wrote about Luna and her Christian faith. It wasn’t preachy or shoved down your throat. It was all done so well. And felt right for the story!

I also LOVE Sol! He cracked me up and he added the comedic relief his friends needed in moments of extreme distress.

The slow burn was soooo good as well! 🔥

Check your triggers, because this book does deal with heavy/disturbing content at times.

Overall, I loved it and would recommend it!! 😍🙌🏻👏🏻

I got the honors of reading this book as an arc. I received it yesterday and as soon as I finished my current read, I dove into it. I devoured this book. Amy has a specific style of writing that grips me and I simply can’t put her books down. When I finished the gala I never thought of there being a sequel but this was a wonderful addition and gave some closure I didn’t even realize I wanted or needed. I will say. This is probably the most messed up book, I personally have ever read. I read a lot of dark romance but I don’t normally meddle in horror. This is a step past your normal thriller style book and definitely takes more of a turn towards horror. The odd combination is that mixed in with the horror and gore there are a lot of Christian values and mentions of god throughout this book. This was something totally different than anything I have ever read. It was an odd combination but Amy did an excellent job at executing it. The reason this book is a 4 versus a 5 star is simply just because of my personal opinion. I didn’t love the horror and gore side of this book, but someone who loves horror would pick up this book and absolutely love it. This book was just a little out of my comfort zone to be a 5 star read for me. But I did still enjoy it and can’t wait to read what she comes up with next🫶🏼 before reading this book. I do highly suggest reading the trigger warnings if you have ANY. This book had some highly triggering scenes that could make it very unenjoyable for someone. Please take care of yourself so that you can enjoy this book to its full potential❤️

This is such an incredible, book two of the series. I absolutely loved it. Cole is getting out of prison after killing the notorious Graham Zanella (Z). He wrote a book while incarcerated and is having the book launch that he would rather not have. Luna has thrown herself into being the best mom for Jaxson. Despite the string connection these two are feeling, there is more disaster headed their way. Can they get through this unscathed or suffer severe consequences?

This book was very much a love letter to my OG characters, the ones who formed and shaped me as a writer and gave me the confidence to hit publish. Cole and Luna have lived in my head for nearly a decade now—I think it’s high time they get their happily (haunted) ever after. Enjoy the ride. ❤️‍🔥

This was my very first opportunity to receive an ARC, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the experience. Amy absolutely knocked it out of the park again. From the very first page, this book grabs you and doesn’t let go. Every chapter leaves you with your heart pounding, and just when you think you’ve figured it out or reached the peak of the tension, it throws you for another loop. The twists are relentless, and each one hits harder than the last.
Emotionally, this book is a rollercoaster. It tugs at your heartstrings, makes you feel real anger, genuine worry, and deep empathy. I found myself thinking about the characters long after I’d closed the book. Amy has an incredible gift for creating characters that feel real. You don’t just read about them, you connect with them, worry for them, cheer for them, and sometimes even grieve for them.
What really stood out to me, though, was the unique blend of thriller/horror with Christian themes. It’s something I honestly didn’t expect to work so well, given how rarely those elements coexist in the same story. I was a little hesitant at first, wondering how that balance would play out however Amy wove it together beautifully. The spiritual aspects didn’t take away from the dark, gripping tension of the story—they enhanced it, adding depth, hope, and a moral complexity that stayed with me long after I turned the last page.
The way she handled trauma, faith, fear, and redemption felt authentic and deeply moving. It made the horror elements even more intense because there was something bigger at stake than just physical survival. Amy isn’t just telling a story she’s making you feel every beat of it.
If you're a fan of thrillers that keep you guessing, horror that genuinely unsettles you, and stories with unexpected emotional and spiritual depth, then you need to read this book. I can't wait to see what Amy does next. She's officially a must-read author for me.

If Amy writes it, I’m reading it. I’m reading it and shouting it to the rooftops. With that being said, I’m not gonna lie, but I was a little nervous there for a sec because I was having a hard time connecting. I was even taking the disconnect kinda hard because I loveeee The Gala (the first book of the duet), but I’m telling you - trust the process. Seriously. I’m mad at myself for even having any doubt (sorry, Amy 🫥). The story ramps up and you will be begging your mind to take a break while also not wanting to stop. It’s a total traumatic avalanche.

There’s a “coming to” moment the night of the launch party between Cole and Luna, and despite the horror of the night, it’s beautiful. I’ve seen a lot of discussion about how Amy intertwined religion into this story. Personally, I think it was neat how she weaved in this sentimental reminder (and many others throughout the story) to her readers. It’s probably one of my favorite parts of the whole book considering how unhinged and dark this story is - the light meeting the darkness.

This is a perfect book to kick off your fall + spooky reads. I had moments where I teared up, my stomach was in knots and felt physically sick, and needing to put the book down to take a calming deep breath. Yet, I couldn’t stop even with it taking a physical toll on me. It’s intense, and I strongly recommend you checking trigger warnings on Amy’s website.

I don’t know what else to say aside from - be careful, be mindful of your mental health, and have fun. 🫣

🪓 cabin in the woods
🦻🏼 slow burn romance
🪓 religious horror
🦻🏼 ASL as dialogue
🪓 a dangerous game
🦻🏼 thrilling twists

I am not even sure where to start… I guess check all triggers before starting. If you haven’t read book 1, The Gala, I would suggest to start there.

5 years have passed and Cole is being released from prison and reunited with Luna. Both are excited and nervous at the same time. Over the last 5 years their friendship has developed and feelings have grown. And now that Cole is released they are going to have a “launch” party of his book he wrote while he was locked up.

The Launch party is held at Sol’s cabin, that way it’s nothing too big for Cole as he is released back out in the community. Here is where everything goes wrong. It all starts when Sol decides to share his “ghost” story and now has Luna on edge. Sol…he is good at inappropriate jokes at the wrong time. Everyone is at the party… David (Coles brother), Clara (Cole’s niece), Rose (Cole’s ex), Dani (Cole’s agent), Jaxson (Lunas son), Grayson (Cole’s friend), Lemon (their dog), and other guests.

Cole would do anything for Luna and Jaxson, that was his family. I did enjoy the twists of the story, but there were a couple of scenes that would be hard for a lot of people to read. Again, check any TWs. Also, religion is mentioned a lot during this book.

The book is a thriller, romcom, love story, but a faith will get you through anything kind of read. If you want to feel all warm and fuzzy one chapter and then completely traumatized the next, then this book is for you!

I was privileged to receive an ARC of The Launch, and it completely blew me away. As a sequel to The Gala, this book goes beyond what I expected...it's richer, deeper, and somehow even more emotionally impactful.

Amy Tackett masterfully blends Christian fiction, heartfelt romance, and psychological tension into a story that kept me glued to the pages. The way she threads faith and real-world struggles with relational tension and plot twists is honestly stunning. It's not often a book makes me cry tears of both happiness and fear, but this one did... and more than once. 😭😥🤯😰😭🥰

The emotional depth caught me off guard in the best way. I felt like I lived this story alongside the characters. Amy explores trust, healing, grace, and inner strength with such authenticity that it lingered with me long after I finished the last page.

If The Gala captured your heart, The Launch will shatter it and stitch it back together again. It’s a beautiful, thrilling, and faith-filled ride that proves Amy Tackett is not just an author to watch... she’s one to follow closely.

Highly recommend this sequel. It’s a 5-star gem that will stay with me for a long time.

I got the privilege to get an ARC copy after devouring The Gala and I was not disappointed! Saw meets Pretty Liars and a love story sprinkled in!
As a person who struggles with faith I think Amy Tackett represents it beautifully.

Dare I say, my level of unhinged is exactly what I’m looking for in The Gala and The Launch! I understand it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is definitely mine she delivers every time.
There are unspeakable things I would do as a mother for my children, and the lines I would cross, Amy Tackett nailed it on the head with the lengths Luna went for Jax.

I think after all the tasks and trials we’ve been through as readers we might need a rom com of Cole and Luna after everything they’ve been through!?
And give Lemon, the bestest girl ever, the biggest bone ever!

Oh Amy..... My heart will take a minute to catch up to my brain in processing what just happened. This was the most twisted, edge of my seat, can't put it down experience that I've had in a long time. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to read this as an ARC. I wasn't sure how you would go after The Gala, but you killed it! I love the fact that it was a thriller and a Rom-com while keeping your faith all in it. Well done ma'am, I am excited to see what you have next. P.S. I'm glad Lem is ok. 😉

Wow wow wow. I am lucky & got to be an ARC reader. This book did NOT disappoint. I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.

This is the second book I’ve read from Amy & it was SO good. She has an amazing talent writing twisted books that keep you engaged & wanting more. I found myself thinking about this book when I was at work— waiting to pick it up and dig more into Cole, Luna & Jax’s story.

Of course I loved the ending… no spoilers but it made me very happy. 🍋🫶🏻🕊️💍🤟🏽

Thank you for the ARC. I was given the opportunity to read this, knowing I haven’t read The Gala yet, I will definitely be going back to read that one as I enjoyed this one very much. The main reason it’s not a 5 star for me is the religious aspect. I’m not religious so for me, some of that could’ve been cut out but overall, I loved the gore and concept. I even really enjoyed the romance aspect between Luna and Cole. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Wow. This was definitely a Omgosh! It was them??? Great job. And I’ve loved reading how Cole and Luna’s love story grew. If you read The Gala, this is definitely a must read. If you didn’t read The Gala, go do it now. And then read this immediately after. Amy Tackett has became one of my favorite indie authors. I’ve read all of her work and every time I’m like whoa didn’t see that coming!

I received this book as an ARC! This dark, twisty book captivated me from the beginning right until the end. There were lovable characters, twists I didn’t see coming, and a beautiful style of writing. While there was a lot of religion mentioned in this book, it didn’t take away from the story for me as someone who doesn’t consider themself to be religious. This was a darker book, and as good as it was, check the triggers before reading!

Amy Tackett has a unique, incredible talent. She can make you feel everything her characters are feeling, even in 3rd person POV. She can so masterfully write a twist that you never see it coming. And with this novel, she successfully mixed horror, thriller, romance, and elements of Christian fiction into a cohesive story that will blow you away. She made me feel sick, and to cry tears of sadness and of joy, all within pages of each other.
This is a sequel, and it's highly recommended to read the Gala first so you will understand the back story. Also, it is a must if you have any triggers, check the warnings.

I loved THE GALA and had high expectations for its sequel, THE LAUNCH. I wanted a continuation of thriller-bordering-on-horror story following these compelling characters, and this didn’t disappoint. I’m always wary of thriller/horror sequels, fearing they will either retread the same story, or tell an entirely new, unconnected story altogether like the previous book never happened. But with THE LAUNCH Tackett weaves a fantastic connected story that ups the ante of the first book.

The characters have developed and been changed by the events of the previous book and they are changed and developed further by the horrific events of this story.

An absolute must read for anyone who enjoyed THE GALA.

Amy Tackett demonstrates in these pages a depth of disturbing she hasn’t yet shown us. And I suspect that’s not as deep as that well goes. I both dread and look forward to finding out.

I was so happy to have gotten a copy of this as an ARC!
I wish I could say I absolutely loved this book, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story but there were also things that I didn't like, and this one dipping more into romance puts it out of my usual reading style, not factoring that into my rating, it's just not my style typically.
There are some TOUGH subjects in this one, I would definitely say people should check the trigger warnings on her website before digging in. imo there's really only one people will struggle a lot with - luckily we didn't get much detail. I will also say, I'm not a religious person, I grew up going to church but left years ago for several reasons, there was a lot more Christianity/faith/God discussion in this one, which did put me off some. I have no issues with other people having faith and all of that, but having it in my thriller story felt odd, especially mixed in with a lot of the things happening in the 2nd half.
Luna, I liked her so much better in The Gala, this time around she irked me, if she'd talked about prison muscles or her prison man one more time....LOL And her dialogue just feels childish sometimes. Our friend Sol is around again, with some cringy, poorly timed jokes to give you a laugh, I would have taken a little more of him.
One of the reveals I expected and expected it to come up while finishing The Gala, though I still want proof of it as I don't trust the person who shared it with us, they're VERY untrustworthy, in many ways.
The ending was a little too neatly wrapped up for me. Do not click this unless you've read, I'm going to be open about some spoilers

OK, I feel like I've said some more negative things than this story warrants for how I really felt about it. But I think part of it is I really want to discuss it but have no one to talk to about it!! And so many of the other reviews so far are glowing so maybe it doesn't hurt to highlight some of the other side? I very much appreciate that I don't find these stories to be overly predictable, so many others are! Even when I have an idea of what will be coming, there's still twists/turns that get thrown in that I didn't expect, or didn't know who to be keeping an eye on.

Amy, I've enjoyed your stories that I've read so far, somethings might not be for me, but it doesn't ruin them and I'll be out here still reading your books.

I had the pleasure of reading this book before its official release, and what a wild and unique ride it was!

Amy Tackett blends horror, humor, and heartfelt themes in a way I’ve never quite seen before. It was a mix of brutality and beauty. The Launch explored rebirth, forgiveness, love, and second chances — all while people are literally chopping up body parts in the woods!

The dialogue and banter were fantastic — Sol and Greyson especially kept me laughing with their perfectly timed comedic relief in the midst of all the chaos. Also…there is a golden retriever named Lemon. Need I say more?

I also loved how this book tied up loose ends from the first book that we didn’t even know we needed!

There are some real dark topics in this book so
Make sure to check the trigger warnings.

There are also strong religious themes throughout, which isn’t my personal taste when I’m diving into a horror/thriller novel but I appreciated how it tied into the book’s larger message of redemption and hope. Readers who enjoy horror with a spiritual edge will find something truly original here.

A bold, creative sequel that’s gruesome, brutal, heartfelt, and full of surprises — definitely one to check out!

Includes: the second book. Emotional story. Dark story with religious values. Set during Halloween. Book launch party. Son in danger. Deaf representation.

Big thank you to Amy for letting me read this early, truly grateful cause I finally read The gala too, gave it 5 stars and loved it. I gave this one a 4.5 stars because even though it gripped me it felt different to the first book, not in a bad way at all but a different reading experience compared to The gala. I was less shocked by the twists but equally terrified

This story is full of new beginnings and really sweet wholesome healing scenes of the gang. But also absolute dark twisted chaos too of course. There was a big bookish element which I of course loved. One of our main characters had written a book and was having a launch party before everything turns into insanity

I had a warning from lovely Amy about act 2 and a huge TW for me and man it bloody hurt like hell to read. I was so close to crying, but I’m glad I pushed through though :,) I loved the special moments between our two main characters too 🥰 you want these guys to have a happy ending so badly

This book is realising this month! Highly recommend reading The gala first then diving into this. If you love twisty, dark, unexpected thriller books that have unique tropes and genres then you’ll love this duology

Thank you Amy Tackett for a digital copy of this book. The opinions are my own and freely given.

This is #2 in the Art of Deception series.

I must urge all who who read this book to make sure you read The Gala first or you might not know what is going on.

There is one disturbing scene in this book in regards to sexual assault. However, it is not overly descriptive, but you do know what is going on. That being said, this book is really good.

Luna really shows her faith in this book. Cole's faith is coming more to the forefront but this was not overly a Christian based book.

I really liked this story and recommend it. The is told in 2 POVs from Luna and Cole, five years after the Gala concludes.

There is also a romantic aspect. Some horror aspects and some spookiness with this remote cabin in the woods.

Enjoy!!!
