D-L GOE

Momentele lui I.L.

Ion Luca Caragiale was a Wallachian-born Romanian playwright, short story writer, poet, theater manager, political commentator and journalist. Leaving behind an important cultural legacy, he is considered one of the greatest playwrights in Romanian language and literature, as well as one of its most important writers and a leading representative of local humor. Alongside Mihai Eminescu, Ioan Slavici and Ion Creangă, he is seen as one of the main representatives of Junimea, an influential literary society with which he nonetheless parted during the second half of his life.

His work, spanning four decades, covers the ground between Neoclassicism, Realism, and Naturalism, building on an original synthesis of foreign and local influences.

Although few in number, Caragiale's plays constitute the most accomplished expression of Romanian theater, as well as being important venues for criticism of late 19th century Romanian society.

They include the comedies A Stormy Night, Conu Leonida faţă cu reacţiunea, O Scrisoare Pierduta Comedie in patru acte, and the tragedy Năpasta. In addition to these, Caragiale authored the melodrama O soacră, a large number of essays, articles, short stories, novellas and sketch stories, as well as occasional works of poetry and autobiographical texts such as Din carnetul unui vechi sufleur. In many cases, his creations were first published in one of several magazines he edited — Claponul, Moftul Român, Vatra and Epoca. Most of his prose works have been published under the title Momente, schite, povestiri: they include Căldură mare, Cănuţă om sucit, Două loturi, Grand Hotel "Victoria română", as well as several pieces referring to stock characters such as Lache and Mache, Marius Chicoş Rostogan and Mitică. In some of his later fiction writings, including La hanul lui Mânjoală, Kir Ianulea, Abu-Hasan, Pastramă trufanda and Calul dracului, Caragiale adopted the fantasy genre or turned to historical fiction.

Ion Luca Caragiale was interested in the politics of the Romanian Kingdom, and oscillated between the liberal current and conservatism. Most of his satirical works target the liberal republicans and the National Liberals, evidencing both his respect for their rivals at Junimea and his connections with the literary critic Titu Maiorescu. He came to clash with National Liberal leaders such as Dimitrie Sturdza and Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, and was a lifelong adversary of the Symbolist poet Alexandru Macedonski. As a result of these conflicts, the most prominent of Caragiale's critics barred his access to the cultural establishment for several decades. During the 1890s, Caragiale rallied with the radical movement of George Panu, before associating with the Conservative Party. After having decided to settle in Berlin, he came to voice strong criticism for Romanian politicians of all colors in the wake of the 1907 Romanian Peasants' Revolt, and ultimately joined the Conservative-Democratic Party.

Ion Luca was the nephew of Costache and Iorgu Caragiale, who were major figures of mid-19th-century Romanian theater. His sons Mateiu I. Caragiale and Luca I. Caragiale were both modernist writers.

Review for "Master Goe" by I. L. Caragiale:

It's one of I. L. Caragiale's most notable sketch stories. The story follows a boy called Master Goe who is on a trip to Bucharest along with Mam Mare, Mamițica and Tanti Mița.
Various stereotypes and the negative aspects of society are described in this story. The snob - Mam Mare, Mamițica and Tanti Mița; the image of the parents and families who are setting bad examples to their children - Mam Mare, Mamițica and Tanti Mița; the spoiled and naughty child – Master Goe are some of the stereotypes mentioned here. Some terms are misused or pronounced in a silly way while trying to act smart or look like one’s from a higher class.
Răzvan "Franco" Nițoi and Chris Grabenstein share the same humor as one of Romania's famous writer and playwright, I. L. Caragiale had.
I recommend these literary works to readers 9+.

Master Goe aka Domnul Goe by Ion Luca Caragiale, perhaps the greatest writer this realm has ever known http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/04/v... - Goe compared with...Trump

10 out of 10

The author that comes to mind when trying to ‘compare’ Ion Luca Caragiale is Kingsley Amis, the former is just the best we have here, while the latter has one magnum opus, Lucky Jim, included on The All-TIME 100 Novels list http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/03/l...

Nevertheless, both writers have a superb sense of humor, describe society so well that we can take one, or maybe more, or all of their works and find defining traits, if not all the specifics of their time exposed in The Lost Letter http://realini.blogspot.com/2014/04/o... or some volumes that will be quoted here.

There is another aspect that is baffling, the fact that we can find the ‘universal’ here, there are some things ‘even rats won’t do’ – for an absurd reason, the punch line from a joke with lawyers (they were not very well seen in America, I do not know about now) just came to mind, the idea was that they will do anything

Master Goe seems to be the epitome of the ‘spoiled brat’, the nec plus ultra of offense, you think you could not find somebody worse – spoiler alert, he puts jam in the shoes or boots (I forgot which) of the visitor, screams and shouts, does not want to do anything if it is suggested by his foolish mother, in awe of a capcaun

Yet, if we are to compare him with some of the things we see today, Goe might not be such a bad chap after all, another crazy example, nay, two come to mind, the first is the idiot in the Kremlin, who has launched the war in Ukraine (and had done so much more before that, think of Georgia, Crimea, to name just two examples)

Putin acts like a child (to be mean, vicious really, he is short and the Napoleon complex is tormenting him, trying to prove what a ‘big man’ he is, when in fact literally and especially metaphorically he is a tiny individual, but something of a major monster) and if he wants something, he must get it, no matter what

The other ‘old child’ is Trump, and the parallel is not mine, his former attorney general, William Bar, the fellow that had defended the indefensible, what with the investigations showing that he (Trump) had done so much wrong) is now finally seeing the light and said that ‘Trump is like a child who keeps the glass of water at the edge of the table, he dares the parents to stop him from spilling it over the side…’

Really, it only now that you notice this atrocious behavior – the latest scandal involves the American Goe taking at his various homes classified, Top Secret documents, and then keeping them in the bathrooms, on the stage of the ballroom, and showing off to various ‘neica nimeni’ the plans to…attack Iran!

So I compare the fool form the short story by Caragiale http://realini.blogspot.com/2023/04/v... with the one who has been until recently the ‘leader of the free world’ and aspires to be one again, after the elections that will take place on November 4, just next year…

Furthermore, speaking of spoiled brats, and outrageous children (which is what Master Goe is all about) there are about seventy million Americans that have not developed intellectually, emotionally beyond the stage where our very own Goe is, and we have the evidence to prove it, they have embraced Trump

And even worse, many still hold on to this nightmare with both hands, let us throw an estimate here and say – I was going to put a lower figure, seeing that polls show around thirty percent of Americans keeping to the old scoundrel, so that would be say forty million…only other investigations show that the lunatic has one chance in three to return to the White House in 2024, and give us the same grotesque show…

After escaping communism, I had a preference for the right of politics, seeing as we had had too much ‘good’ from the left, but republicnas are crazy now, if they have this idiot as the leader, then we can say that they are no good…yes, there are exceptions, but senators, congressmen, governors promote the same scandal…

I took part in the Revolution that changed the system in 1989 and as for my role in the Revolution that killed Ceausescu, a smaller Mao, there it is http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/03/r... the link to a copy of the page that refers to what I told the Newsweek correspondent, the major contribution however was that of glorious Andrei Finti, he was the real hero, the one that was there, in front of the forces of the regime, risking his life, and keeping us inspired to stay and not run away

Now for a question, and invitation – maybe you have a good idea on how we could make more than a million dollars with this http://realini.blogspot.com/2022/02/u... – as it is, this is a unique technique, which we could promote, sell, open the Oscars show with or something and then make lots of money together, if you have the how, I have the product, I just do not know how to get the befits from it, other than the exercise per se
