“Even if I don’t get how you work, even when I can’t feel you near,
I’ll just close my eyes. I won’t worry or fret.
I’ll get comfy and snuggly and remember what you said.
I am sure of this, and I will always know – Jesus is with me.
I am never alone.”

Oh. My. Goodness! What an adorable picture book with a super sweet (and important) message for kiddos and adults alike. Gillian Reid’s illustrations are SO CUTE, and they combine seamlessly with Faith Eury Cho’s text to give Mera so much personality. The two really do go hand-in-hand in Never Alone, and I can’t imagine I would have enjoyed it as much as I did if either element was removed. I grinned through the whole thing and immediately read it again the second I was done, paying extra attention to how endearing the artwork is and how much truth can be unpacked each time you look through it.

Haven’t we all been where Mera is? Trying to go to sleep but our brain just won’t shut off from all the fears and worries and concerns of our life playing on repeat through our thoughts. In Mera’s case it’s been a rough day (spilled water, ruined artwork, BROCCOLI) and she just doesn’t want to be alone. (And also, ISN’T SHE CUTE?!?)

What follows is a conversation with God that is just as hilarious as it is precious. I could just hear Mera’s constant stream-of-consciousness chatter as she rapid-fires questions at Him (as only a little one can do) and processes the implications of His potential answers in real time (My favorite of those processing questions was “Is Jesus in my belly button?” haha!) She’s honest and precocious and so completely huggable, and I just know that – if she were an actual child and not just a character in a picture book – Jesus would just be tickled over her. She definitely delighted me, that’s for sure.

But amid the wit and sheer adorableness of Mera’s late-night gab session with God, Cho tucks several important truths in there as well. The first and foremost being that we can talk with God as we would our parents or even our friends. He honors honest questions from a curious heart, no matter the age. Another truth that’s implied, if not outright stated, is that Jesus can truly enjoy us – He created us and gave us our personalities, after all! And yes, Mera, I’m pretty sure He DOES love funny kids, even if you don’t have a good joke at the ready, and I love to picture Him grinning like a proud Papa when you dance or sing. We’re also reminded that He really really loves us and is always by our side, even if we make bad choices. Because He made a way to always be close to us. And, just like that, we have an open door to explain the good news of the Gospel to little hearts.

Bottom Line: Never Alone by Faith Eury Cho is one of my new fave picture books! Everything about it delighted me – from Mera’s absolute darling-ness to Gillian Reid’s vibrant & super-cute illustrations to the myriad of spiritual truth Cho packed so naturally into this tiny book. Namely, that God welcomes our questions, loves spending time with us just as we are, and has promised to always be with us. Cho also perfectly captures the way little minds wander through questions, worries, and wonder, and Reid’s artwork brings that curiosity-process to life in the most adorable ways. Never Alone is a book I’ll be giving to my littlest niece and nephew pronto, and I’ll buy a copy for myself to have on hand when the great-nieces and great-nephews start arriving. (Oh, who am I kidding, I’ll probably pull it out and read it periodically just so my whole heart can smile.) And listen… if your kids walk away wondering whether Jesus is in their belly button, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to keep the faith conversation going with a big grin on your face (and probably one on Jesus’s face too).

Cute and fun character to follow through her questions and concerns about being alone. But the story seems to lack clarity in who Jesus/God is and how God communicates with us.

All of the main characters' questions are ones many kids express, but from a Christian publisher and Christian author, I expected more of a biblical response than a feelings response and the child okay will not understanding being shown.

This book is absolutely precious! I would recommend it to anyone who needs a reminder that we are never alone. Even when we have a bad day, or make a bad choice, and yes even when we're sleeping, Jesus never leaves us alone!
