Whimbrel House #2

Heir of Uncertain Magic

Rate this book
One man is on a journey to unravel his magical lineage in the next spellbinding novel of the Whimbrel House series by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.

Thanks to house tamer Hulda Larkin, the mischief infesting Whimbrel House has calmed. But if Hulda’s job is done, what does that mean for Merritt Fernsby, inheritor of the remote Narragansett Bay estate, who’s only now coming to terms with his enchanted place in the world?

Merritt has realized his own burgeoning powers, which draw the thoughts of every plant, insect, and dog. His nights are sleepless, with an uncontrollable cacophony of voices that compel a long-overdue search into his uncanny bloodline. It’s not the only puzzle uniting Merritt and his ex-housekeeper, Hulda. Her friend and former employer at the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has disappeared. Hulda herself is up for the now-vacant position of institute director, and her rival for the role is a stranger who’s suspiciously curious about Whimbrel House—and could have connections to an old foe.

As Merritt struggles to face his estranged family and Hulda dives into the institute’s secrets, the two are brought intimately closer than ever into the mysteries of wizardry, chaos, and love.

Heir of Uncertain Magic by Charlie N. Holmberg
(Whimbrel House #2)

My favorite Whimbrel House characters are back but not all is right with their world. Merritt Fernsby and his former housekeeper, Hulda, know they have feelings for each other but Hulda, so new to romance, is unsure and hesitant about how to proceed with their relationship. She also isn't sure what future Biker has since her former boss, Myra, has done more manipulation of the company than is probably legal. In fact, Biker is being investigated by the home office, Liker, and a new director must be picked. The investigators don't seem very friendly towards Hulda so she's afraid she won't get the job even though she is the best person for it.

At Whimbrel House, chef Baptiste is still there but Beth as been removed by Liker and sent who knows where. Adorable Owein, eight or so times Merritt's uncle, a 12 year old boy, once enchanting a house but now inside the body of a dog, is learning to spell and Merritt is getting classes to help him better understand his new found magic abilities. Merritt, Hulda, Baptiste, Beth, and Owein love Whimbrel House and its island but evil forces are afoot to tear up this family-like group. Plus, Merritt feels the need to go back to his hometown and face his father, er, fathers.

I worried about Merritt and Hulda and their naivety. Even once they had discerned that shadiness was afoot at Biker, they, especially Hulda, just goes about her business there, with less care for her safety than I would like. Yes, she wants the director's job at Biker but magic is a real thing in this world and it seems you can never trust what you think is going on when there could be someone around you manipulating emotions, senses, everything. In the end, almost everyone needs saving. What have you done, Myra? Hulda wants to trust her friend/former boss but she and her friends may be paying for Myra's misdeeds. When I say this story is confusing, it makes sense because confusion is one of the spells that get used in this story.

In a Nutshell: A lovely continuation to the Whimbrel House series. While not as creepy as Book One, this sequel was still enjoyable, though it took me a while to get into the plot this time around.

Story Synopsis:
Narragansett Bay, 1846. Whimbrel House is now just a regular house, but its inhabitants are still trying to deal with their magical abilities. Hulda is struggling to get back to her professional self, especially after the old head of BIKER has disappeared, but her feelings for Merritt keep getting in the way. Merritt is struggling to judge the extent of his magical capabilities, and also to reconcile with his past. Owein is struggling with his new physical form though his magic is as strong as ever.
With some top honchos from LIKER (the London equivalent of BIKER) coming to the Boston headquarters for an audit and review, there are some unexpected developments, and some unknown dangers.
What lies in store for the ‘heir of uncertain magic’?
The story comes to us in a limited third person perspective of Hulda, Merritt and Owein.

Bookish Yays:
😍 I love it when sequels continue from the earlier book. This one takes all the arcs of ‘Keeper of Enchanted Rooms’ and takes them logically ahead, without any track feeling convoluted or contradictory. Similarly, the character development is maintained to a great extent. A wonderful continuation leans on the shoulders of the first book and takes it to a new level, as a sequel should be. (Which also means that you should not read it as a standalone. But why would you want to do so anyway? ‘Keeper of Enchanted Rooms’ was such an adorable book! Read both!)

😍 I enjoyed Merritt’s character development tremendously this time. He seems to learn from the situation and act with maturity even when Hulda acts weird.

😍 My boy Owein is back, and he gets the prime role this time. His presence in any scene lifted its charm up by at least 200%. I loved him equally in both the books.

😍 Baptiste and Beth (the latter in a somewhat smaller role, sadly) are as impeccable as in the first.

😍 After the slow beginning, the book went into a steady rhythm. Once I got into the groove, I didn’t feel like keeping it aside at all.

😍 The magical bits are as imaginative as before. Nothing ever feels farfetched, which is quite an achievement for a fantasy novel.

😍 While the book sounds quite serious in its premise, (and it is so), there are plenty of humorous scenes courtesy Merritt and Owein, thereby creating the perfect balance of emotions.

😍 The climax and the parting note both are awesome.

Bookish Nays:
😐 The book is a bit repetitive at the start as it tries to re-establish the events of the first book.

😐 While I connected a lot with Hulda in the first book because of her professionalism and her vocabulary, she was somewhat annoying this time. I also didn’t understand why she felt so handicapped without Myra as she was perfectly capable of handling things independently in the first volume. Somehow, what felt natural in Book One felt forced in this sequel. (To be fair, she does improve in the second half.)

😐 The “villain” is quite flat in this book, and their motivation doesn’t come out strongly.

While I might not adored this as much as I did the first one, I still enjoyed it tremendously. This sequel is to be read more for the characters and the magic than for the creepiness, unlike in the first one where both were impressive.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when the author’s latest newsletter revealed that a third book is on the way. ‘Boy of Chaotic Making’ is due to be released in early 2024. Considering how the ‘Keeper of Enchanted Rooms’ was Hulda and the ‘Heir of Uncertain Magic’ was Merritt, the ‘Boy of Chaotic Making’ is obviously going to be my darling little Owein. Yippee!
(Don’t you dare kill him off, dear author!!! I am warning you!!!)

Definitely recommended to all readers of historical fantasies, but do read the series in the right order to enjoy it to the fullest.

4.25 stars.

Big thanks to Netgalley, 47North and Charlie N. Holmberg for the ARC.

If you need an escape from the angst and horror of the real world, this cosy historical fantasy is a soothing soul salve complete with low stakes family drama in a unique world of magic where one of the main characters is a dog possessed by a child ghost who used to possess a house. And while that last sentence might sound absurd, I soaked it all right up. Holmberg clearly loves dogs and it shines through in her characterisation of Owein who is one of the MVPs by far. Recommend for people who like dogs and cosy fantasies — remember to read the first book, Keeper of Enchanted Rooms first.

Heir of Uncertain Magic is a great follow up to the first book of the series Keeper of Enchanted Rooms - and yes, you guessed right, the books are titled after the lead characters in the series. Hulda and Merritt are scrambling to deal with the repurcussions of the events in the first book, trying to fend off new rivalries and dangers all while exploring their fledgling relationship.

The strength of this book, and by extension the series, lies in the strong foundation of the world-building and the magic system. It not only introduces new branches of magic and spells but also dwells on how it affects the environment and the caster. It's good to see the magic follow genetic inheritance rules.

There is substantial character development, even in the relatively short few months since the start of the series. They are willing to introspect, make some tough decisions and grow. It's especially great to see Owein adapt to new conditions.

The story is pretty interesting, equal parts character driven and reacting to external events. The writing itself flows easily and mostly focused on the characters, which I liked in this book.

🌟🌟🌟🌟

The rating of this book is 3.5 stars and is rounded up to 4 stars as it delivers what it promises.

Thanks to NetGalley, the publishers 47North and Charlie N. Holmberg for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

[One star for the premise and the whole book; Half a star for the characters; Half a star for the story; One star for the world-building; Half a star for the writing - 3.5 stars in total].

I liked this book a lot, just not as much as the first one. What I liked the most was, of course, the characters I couldn’t wait to hang out with again after Keeper of Enchanted Rooms. And the setting and the overall vibes of the story are just sooo cozy!

This is a perfect book to curl up with, grab a cup of tea, your favorite blanket, and disappear from this world for a couple of days. And it is so different from what I usually read, it always feels fresh and like a great palette cleanser.

But this second book didn’t feel as exciting to me as the first one. Quite a bit happened, but I can’t escape this feeling like nothing much has changed.

Still, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Just as cute and cozy as book one with a slightly less interesting plot. These books make good palate cleansers for the long and involved fantasies I typically read, but they aren’t in the running for favorites.

This is the second book in the series written by Charlie N. Holmberg. With elements of magic and sweet romance between main characters Hulda and Merritt, and the return of other charming characters, the story continues. The author's depiction of magic makes its use seem almost normal and possible. Love these characters and the secluded island setting of the home. Recommended.

The book was entertaining enough, but it was so packed with slightly revolting romantic stuff that my Lovey Dovey Nonsense Quota (LDNQ™) is now officially filled up for the next 10 years.

P.S. I want an Owein spin-off. Because a canine POV would be much more exciting than all this corny, sentimental crap hogwash, if you ask me.

Beautiful 9.5/10

Whimbrel House is an enchanted house (is it?! read the first book!) Merritt Fernsby its heir with uncertain magic has to discover his potential with his (former) housekeeper, Hulda, luckily they are not alone, family is important, with the help of eight-times-great-uncle, lovely Owein and chef Baptiste, they can pass his challenge (Can they? read this book)

Honestly Whimbrel House Series is so unique, spectacular, the idea is special, very engaging and heartwarming story with lots of fun, the characters are exceptional and I LOVE it.

The story continues after the events of book one, Keeper of Enchanted Rooms, there are more secrets to reveal and adventures to go. I suggest reading this series in order to better know of characters and their relationship and also finer understanding of the story to follow.

If you did not read the first book, is better to avoid the below for a spoiler

and what the story is about?!

Merritt Fernsby is communionist for sure (besides other magical gifts he may have from his unknown ancestors), He can communicate with Owein (Oh, how much I love him!) and also with, trees, mouses, moths, spiders and you know, all...
Wiiiiiiiiind. hide. hide. hide. hunt. hunt. hunt. food. food. food. food. run. run. run...

When I was a child, my greatest wish was to have this gift...

I get sentimental...

right, the story

Myra Haigh, the director of BIKER (Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms) vanished and some not-very-straight-forward people came from LINKER (London Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms) to investigate and assign a new director.

Hulda Larkin, my favorite housekeeper, as much as she wants to be the director and take care of BIKER, also wants to protect her friend, Myra. Hulda is worried about her and starts searching for any clue to find Myra.

"Merritt didn’t think Hulda Larkin could relax. God had made her out of steel and concrete and laced her together with thick whale-boned corsets. Something they would have to work on."

Things get messy and complicated as couple of the year, Hulda and Merritt digging the past and look for Myra. Someone is/or are using illegal magic!

description
In the end, I should mention as a geologist I love the stones part, now I just keep thinking about how manipulating elements with quartz, how to use my obsidians for chaocracy, or how to read people's minds with azurite (I'm going to regret that!), and where the hell I can find selenite for communication??!!

My huge thanks to 47North via NetGalley for giving me a chance to read this beautiful book, Heir of Uncertain Magic (Whimbrel House #2) by Charlie N. Holmberg, I have given my very honest review.

I got the first book in this series as part of my perks for an Amazon Prime membership. As I was finishing it, I was made aware that the sequel was available on NetGalley, so I rushed over to snag a copy of it.

I loved this book more than the first, honestly, because we didn't have to go through all the tedious (though necessary, I know) details that were required to set the scene and introduce the characters in the first book.

We got to know all of the characters better, in this book, and I really appreciated having more opportunity to "visit" with them and watch them solve new problems.

I really enjoyed this book, and I'm honestly hoping that it isn't the last in the series. I recommend it to those who enjoy magic and fantasy.

Charlie N. Holmberg has become an instant buy for me, and I was so excited for this series. I devoured the first one to realize the second one wasn’t yet out. When I got the ARC I immediately started reading it.

The world building of magic is one of my favorite things about this series. The idea of magic dying out, the categories, the enchanted houses. It’s all so fun. It never feels overwhelming, and you’ll always be learning new things as needed. Honestly, it’s what makes Holmberg’s books so different and all so much fun. It’s always a new world, and I’ve never failed to enjoy them.

The plot is quick paced, occasionally a wee bit slow in the middle, but nothing terrible. The characters are all so much fun, and I love learning more and more about them as we go along.

It ends wonderfully, and in a way to let you know there will be third!

I adore Charlie Holmberg's magical worlds. This should be the next series for any fans of Holmberg's Paper Magician series. Holmberg is so good at creating new and unique magical elements - I never find her books trope-y. The magical rules and elements are always original and refreshing.
As a follow up to Keeper of Enchanted Rooms, this is a wonderful continuation story for Hulda, Merrit, and Owein.
Not all mysteries were solved by the end of the last story. Hulda is on a mission to find her missing co-worker, Merrit is chasing down information about his new-found magic, and Owein contemplates life in a physical body, a mortal one, after decades as an object. Merrit and Hulda are feeling their way through their blooming relationship and feeling the test of their separate missions.
I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next installment!

2.5 stars

Maybe it's the curse of the middle book, but I just couldn't find it in me to be bothered. It took me almost a month to read it, mostly because I was just so bored. There was very little action, not enough character development to keep me happy, the more whimsical atmosphere from the first book was missing, and we didn't get very many places as far the over-arcing plot either. I'm willing to give Book 3 a try, but I'm not excited for it at this point.

Note: the review may contain minor spoilers to Book 1 of the Whimbrel series.

What a pleasant and enjoyable sequel to the first book!

This was my second work by Charlie Holmberg, and second in the Whimbrel House series as well. I had read 'Keeper of Enchanted Rooms' earlier this month and had been stoked to learn that the next one would be coming out in a few weeks!

Following on the footsteps of the first book's ending, this book focuses more on the protagonist, Merritt Fernsby - his magic (and him coming to terms with it), his love for the people around him, and his past that threatens to destroy his present. We have the ever-lovely characters of Beth Taylor, Baptiste, and my personal favorite, Owein (who is now a dog) make multiple appearances and yet again, manage to steal my heart with their mere presence.

The similarities to the first book also extend to the story-writing, where we get a chapter from three different POV - Merritt, Hulda, and Owein. But unfortunately, once again, I couldn't help but feel that the antagonist's complete potential wasn't utilized. They were certainly not as threatening and intense as the "evil force" in the first book, and we got a lot less magic from them than I would've liked. A lot of the focus is on certain side characters, such as Myra and Hulda's pursuit of the truth to find her, that the reader doesn't feel as intimidated by the villain as they should.

My delight in discovering that a THIRD book is in the works is immeasurable. What makes it better is it seems like it might be based on Owein, who remains the one character in the story that gets a chuckle out of me every single time and warms my heart to no end. I look forward to reading the concluding part of this trilogy, with a finale fitting the most important character in these stories.

Recommended for readers of magical realism and light historical-fantasy/fiction, with lovely magic, cozy houses, and personable characters.

Charlie N. Holmberg’s work Heir of Uncertain Magic grounds a beautiful and enchanting tale of the magic world. The story keeps the reader intact and curious through every chapter. Merritt Fernsby and Hulda Larkin’s love amidst their entangled situation with BIKER and Merritt’s struggle with spells and magic is one of the bright aspects of it. The romantic notions are exquisite. They deliver a ray of hope throughout Merritt’s journey of finding his lineage and Hulda’s effort of investigating the disappearance of Myra.
Owein’s phenomenal character gives a lighter tone to the story. The feelings of a dog who happened to be a house before touch one’s heart. The painful past yet the childish nature of Owein adds to the rhythm of the story. His dedication to his recent family which happens to be Merritt, Hulda, Miss Taylor and Baptiste is phenomenal. His emotions when they are not around him support the fact of his loyalty and unconditional love.
The magical realm, spells and stones portray Charlie’s own knowledge of magical fantasy. Her deep insight into this genre is much appreciated by the reader. The dialogues are well-placed and fit the story's plot, time, place and phase.
BIKER, LIKER, and Myra’s character keep one involved in a kind of trance and curiosity for what will happen next with Hulda. The story has a detective touch which with romance is the strength of Heir of Uncertain Magic. It’s a happy ending for almost every character involved specifically Merritt and Hulda. Everything begins to sit perfectly in its place as the story reaches its end. The proposal, in the end, is a beautiful exit to the story by Charlie.
Throughout the story, the reader keeps praising Charlie for her beautiful narration and stronghold on writing a magical fantasy. Heir of Uncertain Magic is highly recommended for whoever loves reading magical, romantic and detective stories.

MAGICAL AND EMOTIONAL HISTORICAL FANTASY

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, so I was thrilled to get my hands on this as well. And while I didn't feel like it was quite as good, it was still soooo good!

👍 What I Liked 👍

Magic: This is such a unique magical world! The different classes of magic, the genetic component, the magical authorities. I absolutely loved to see it expanded even more from the first book and hope to see even more in book 3.

Merritt: I loved Merritt from the start, but his arc in this book was really something to behold. I loved his growing maturity - not that he was ever immature, but he just grows more into himself. He gains in confidence. He learns to look into himself. And he learns to communicate.

👎 What I Disliked 👎

Hulda: Hulda, on the other hand, seemed to regress in this book. I loved her and her professionalism in the first book. But in this one it seemed like she could hardly even function on her own. Without Myra, she almost fell apart. It didn't seem plausible for the women we met in book one to be rendered so powerless without her boss.

I was so happy and thrilled to find the arc of Charlie N. Holmberg’s new book, Heir of Uncertain Magic on the Read Now section of NetGalley. After just finishing Keeper of Enchanted Rooms, I was excited about being able to go back and revisit with the characters and read more about the magic along with the obstacles and dilemmas they go through. I was really quite surprised at how much I enjoyed reading these books since this isn’t a genre that I normally tend to read. But these books are really good! I love reading about the romance that is blossoming between Merritt and Hulda especially since Hulda is so shy, inexperienced and proper. These stories are a historical romance, fantasy and a little bit mystery. I do recommend other readers check them out, even if this isn’t your normal type read. I think you might just be surprised like I was at how much you enjoy them. I would start with the first book if possible. If not, that’s fine too, as the author has recapped everything in the second book so you won’t feel lost, confused or like you’ve missed out on anything important. I’d like to thank NetGalley for the arc to read and review. I’m happy to have found a new author to enjoy and I’m giving this book a 5 star rating!

Without having read the first book in the series, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this novel. While I didn't realize it was part of a continuous story when I first picked it up, the author's skillful descriptions and attention to detail provided ample background information to understand the characters and plot.
This novel is a captivating blend of magical and fantasy elements woven into a suspenseful story about friendships, betrayal, and romance. The author spares nobody's feelings as the story unfolds, from the young and still-learning Owein to the big changes happening at the highest levels of the company.
At first, I was a bit confused about where the story was heading, but once I became familiar with the main characters, I was hooked. The big picture soon emerged, and I found myself fully engaged until the very end. Now, I am left with a sense of curiosity and a desire to know what happens next. The open ending left me with so many questions that I hope will be answered in future installments.
Overall, I would recommend this book to fans of magical and fantasy fiction, as well as those who enjoy suspenseful and character-driven stories. While I don't plan to go back and read the first book, I think it's necessary to fully appreciate and enjoy this one if you want to read it.

I absolutely devoured this book. Continuing the events from the first book, the characters find themselves on a new mysterious adventure. There’s not much I can say without spoiling the first book, but I loved seeing the characters come together more fully and learn to work though their problems together. This chosen family story has magic, self discovery, mystery, trauma healing, sweet romantic subplots, quirky characters, and wild conspiracies that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Plus I’m obsessed with the two main characters. Merritt and Hulda banter is my favorite! Their game of 20 questions brought me so much joy. I’m not sure how, but this second book was even better than the first. I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy!

The second volume of this series takes a decidedly different turn as mysterious forces come into play. It lacked the lightness of the first volume, but made up for it in intrigue as Merritt Fernsby and Hulda Larkin work to discover the whereabouts of Myra, the director of BIKER, who has inexplicably disappeared, as well as diving deeper into Merritt’s magical background, and the future of Hulda—as his love interest and as a member of BIKER—the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms—especially as she is up for consideration as its new director as her friend’s replacement. But others are up for consideration as well, and they may stop at nothing to achieve their goals for BIKER. Overall, an enchanted read (see what I did there!). Hopefully, Ms. Holberg has more in store for the Whimbrel House series!

UPDATE: According to the author’s website, a third book in the series is due out in Feb 2024!

Heir of Uncertain Magic by Charlie N. Holmberg

A stunning addition to the Whimbrel House series. This story is full of suspense, magic, and a little dose of romance.

I think my favorite thing about this series is the character development. Each character is well fleshed out with a personality of their own. I can imagine them as real people living in a world of magic.

The adventure in this book is new and exciting. The set up is intricate and fun to make guesses as to where it is going.

I can’t wait for book three!

I love, love this series! So good!

It was great to get back with Merritt and Hulda, but the problems are even bigger this time. Merritt struggles with his newfound magic and looks for someone who can teach him to use it.
Hulda is worried for her friend and mentor who has disappeared, which brings another set of problems.
I love Owein too! He's no longer a house and can have so much more freedom as a dog, even though it still comes with restrictions. I'd love to see him get a boy body again in book 3!

There are evil forces at play and I'm not convinced a certain enemy is gone.

The writing is phenomenal and the mix of historical and magical realism makes this story a treat to read.

Can't wait for book 3!!!

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest review.
